Most of us don't remember our first two or three years of life — but our earliest experiences may stick with us for years and continue to influence us well into adulthood.

Just how they influence us and how much is a question that researchers are still trying to answer. Two studies look at how parents' behavior in those first years affects life decades later, and how differences in children's temperament play a role.

The first study , published Thursday in Child Development , found that the type of emotional support that a child receives during the first three and a half years has an effect on education, social life and romantic relationships even 20 or 30 years later.

Babies and toddlers raised in supportive and caring home environments tended to do better on standardized tests later on, and they were more likely to attain higher degrees as adults. They were also more likely to get along with their peers and feel satisfied in their romantic relationships.

"It seems like, at least in these early years, the parents' role is to communicate with the child and let them know, 'I'm here for you when you're upset, when you need me. And when you don't need me, I'm your cheerleader,' " says Lee Raby , a psychologist and postdoctoral researcher at the University of Delaware who led the study.

Raby used data collected from 243 people who participated in the Minnesota Longitudinal Study of Risk . All the participants were followed from birth until they turned 32. "Researchers went into these kids' home at times. Other times they brought the children and their parents to the university and observed how they interacted with each other," Raby tells Shots.

Of course, parental behavior in the early years is just one of many influences, and it's not necessarily causing the benefits seen in the study. While tallying up the results, the researchers accounted for the participants' socioeconomic status and the environment in which they grew up.

Ultimately, they found that about 10 percent of someone's academic achievement was correlated with the quality of their home life at age three. Later experiences, genetic factors and even chance explain the other 90 percent, Raby says.

And a child's psychological makeup is a factor as well.

The second study , also published in Child Development , found that children's early experiences help predict whether or not they end up developing social anxiety disorder as teenagers — but only for those who were especially sensitive and distrustful as babies.

For this study, researchers from the University of Maryland observed how 165 babies interacted with their parents. When separated from their parents, some got upset but quickly recovered when they were reunited. Other babies had a harder time trusting their parents after a brief separation, and they weren't able to calm down after being reunited.

Those extra-sensitive babies were more likely to report feeling anxious socializing and attending parties as teenagers.

So what does this all mean? For one, it means that human development is complicated, according to Jay Belsky , a professor of human development at the University of California, Davis who was not involved in either study.

We know that our early experiences likely affect all of us to a certain extent, Belsky says. And we know that due to variations in psychological makeup, some people are more sensitive to environmental factors than others.

But that doesn't mean people can't recover from bad childhood experiences. "For some, therapy or medication may help," Belsky says. "And it's interesting, because there's now other evidence suggesting that the very kids who succumb under bad conditions are the ones who really flourish under good ones."

In a memory survey, adult respondents recalled, dated, and described two earliest positive and negative memories that they were highly confident were memories. They then answered a series of questions that focused on memory details such as clothing, duration, weather, and so on. Few differences were found between positive and negative memories, which on average had 4/5 details and dated to the age of 6/6.5 years. Memory for details about activity, location, and who was present was good; memory for all other details was poorer or at floor. Taken together, these findings indicate that (full) earliest memories may be considerably later than previously thought and that they rarely contain the sort of specific details targeted by professional investigators. The resulting normative profile of memory details reported here can be used to evaluate overly specific childhood autobiographical memories and to identify memory details with a low probability of recall.

The transition to adulthood is critical but often misunderstood. As societal and economic changes have created new demands and challenges for young people, particularly those in the 18- to 25-year-old range, we now recognize emerging adulthood as a distinct period separate from adolescence and older adulthood (Arnett, 2004). During this period, emerging adults experience new life roles.

Research by Arnett (2004) and others (Kroger, Martinussen, & Marcia, 2010) has shown the length of time for young people to actually create a personal identity has increased to the mid-to-late 20s. Emerging adulthood in Western culture is still a time of shifting identities. There is a continued risk of experimentation with unhealthy behaviors, posing perhaps an even greater risk for the young people in this later emerging adulthood stage. They are no longer minors and are faced with two additional life challenges: increased adult responsibilities and decreased familial support.

Autonomy: Emotional and Behavioral Components

A core element in the journey to adulthood involves the attainment of autonomy (Rice & Dolgin, 2008). During this time period, young people establish their uniqueness from others, and new interests, values, goals , and worldviews divergent from close others may emerge (Rice & Dolgin, 2008). As a normal developmental process, autonomy has been described as having two components: emotional and behavioral.

Emotional autonomy refers to becoming free of childish emotional dependence on adults (Rice & Dolgin, 2008). Parents can either foster an overdependence on the developing young person or provide the opposite, a lack of guidance and support. Clearly, a balance of both is the most preferred course of action (Rice & Dolgin, 2008). Behavioral autonomy refers to youth learning to become more skilled in their own self-governing behavior and independent enough to make decisions on their own accord (Holmbeck et al., 2006; Rice & Dolgin, 2008). Young persons are faced with the ultimate developmental conundrum: On the one hand, they are met with the task of exploring alternative behaviors and roles that smack of adultlike decisions, and on the other hand, they bear the new, yet daunting role of no longer being confined by parental and once-perceived societal regulations.

From the onset of puberty through age 25, the adolescent brain undergoes profound changes in structure and function (Wetherill & Tapert, 2013). Advances in developmental neuroscience and neuroimaging demonstrate regions of the brain develop at different rates—from birth to emerging adulthood (Mills, Goddings, Clasen, Giedd, & Blakemore, 2014). Recognizing how many adolescent behaviors can be attributed to a developmental mismatch between structural/functional imbalances in certain brain regions is a key to MI spirit. Recent research about two key brain regions has evidenced how structural changes affect functional behavioral outputs in youth (Feldstein Ewing, Tapert, & Molina, 2016; Luciana & Feldstein Ewing, 2015). Specifically, evidence is emerging on how the limbic regions are associated with reward and emotional regulation , and how regions such as the prefrontal cortex are associated with cognitive control. Other brain regions, associated with the activation and processing of social information, can actually enhance the development of adolescent cognitive executive functions , as compared to other developmental periods (Steinberg, 2008). For example, while impulsive behaviors may be seen as a lack of “cognitive control,” we concur some degree of risk-taking behavior may be necessary and important for youth to gain important life experiences required to assume adult roles.

This developmental period offers incredible opportunities. In contrast to older adults whose brains are no longer in a formative stage of development, the neural networks of youth are being reshaped with each learning experience. Understanding these processes can further help you to understand how to turn challenges into opportunities for growth.

Emerging Adult Essay: Life Moving Forward: A Personal Perspective on Transitioning Into Adulthood

Throughout life, transitions can create some of the most daunting experiences anyone will encounter. Leaving school, finding a job, moving out on your own, finding someone to share your life with—these all constitute life transitions and events that force everyone to look outside of their comfort zone to formulate a solution. Everyone dreads the change, but we all must face it head-on and accept the challenge of something different. For people with disabilities these changes may be overwhelming and, at times, debilitating. The key to success while transitioning is having attained the proper skill set to help overcome whatever transitional barrier(s) your particular disability mandates.

I am a 25-year-old male who was born and raised in Virginia. I am someone who, I hope and believe, has successfully transitioned to adulthood, though not without both ups and downs. Because I was born with cerebral palsy (CP), I use a power wheelchair to help me get around and accomplish daily tasks. I graduated from college in the fall of 2013. There I created my own disability advocacy degree under the interdisciplinary studies major titled “Advocacy for Social Justice.” I also majored in sociology and have a minor in psychology. Some of my hobbies include hanging out with friends and family, watching sports of all kinds, and working with individuals with disabilities. Until recently, when I opened my consulting business, I never held a full-time job, having only interned at all of my employment experiences. These internships include two federal and one state government entity and a disability resource center. Additionally, I have worked on a congressional campaign. I hope my experiences help to motivate you, whether you’re a student or a teacher reading this essay, to take control of your transition process or to help someone effectively transition to adulthood.

Adulthood is the recognition of oneself and being responsible and accountable for one’s actions. It is the stage where one achieves freedom from the direct control of their parent from the former stage of childhood. Adulthood is characterized by completion of school, entry into labor force and exit from parental house and direct care. Childhood on the other hand is a stage in life when one is strictly bound under the care of their parent. One has little freedom of choice or decision making since most of these are handled by the parents. In the childhood phase, an individual is strictly supervised, have no sense of responsibility as the parent carry out all their responsibility (Reitman, et al. 23).Comparing the two phase of life therefore, offers significant differences and similarities that can be compared and contrasted by the use of thought, action and the general will of a person at a particular age. While there are some similarities between adulthood and childhood, the two are very different identity phases of human life. Thesis statement: the similarities and differences between the phases of adulthood and childhood. Adulthood and childhood stages can be contrasted by their behavior and actions. In childhood, one is more compelled to act freely without being held responsible for what they do or in the manner by which they act. They take most of their times in learning how to interpret other people’s views and feelings when they are carrying out an action. On the other hand, adulthood is being aware of the world around you and being entirely controlled by thoughts and feelings of responsibility. One is compelled to act in the way that is morally and socially accepted by the society and take responsibility of their choice, decision and actions. The society has bigger expectations from the adults, adulthood phase is embedded in a social expectation that is expected by the society and one is aware of the same. This expectation increases the pressure and the burden of responsibility is made heavier. This is because as one works hard to fulfill their personal needs and interests, the society is closely observing to see how one adheres to the norms and how they behave in the expected manner or otherwise, restrictions are imposed. Childhood is contrary to this because in the phase of childhood, individuals act on impulse and learn what is socially acceptable in the course of growth (Reitman, et al. 33). The knowledge they obtain about the socially accepted behaviors, norms and values develop in their adult life. Thereafter, the society expects them to conform to those values. Children are provided with their need while adults work for them. In childhood, everything is provided by the parents and children have no obligation over anything. Most of their time is spent in learning about life. It could be learning how to associate, how to communicate and interact or on discovering how the world around them looks like. Their needs and requirements are met and provided for by the parents. They do not work and most of their time is spent playing or sleeping. Childhood is therefore spent on learning about the social structure, the surrounding and in acquiring skills and techniques on how to become a part of the dynamic society. Adulthood on its part is taking full control of one’s life; being responsible at home and at the workplace. It is the mastering the natural and social structure and being integrated to its functioning in such a way that one’s actions are morally upright and their behavior and decisions are aligned to the social expectations. It is working hard to satisfy one’s needs and achieve success by confirmative ways (Reitman, et al. 83). There are limited similarities between adulthood and young hood. However, the most common factor in both groups it seems they have overwhelmed ability for being narrow-minded. Therefore their thoughts are known to controls their actions. This is more similar to that of young hood since their basic thoughts and instinctive thoughts in most cases are the same. Another similarity is that children still need friends who they could share their best and happiest moment with (Reitman, et al. 63). Therefore they put an effort to socialize in order to have friends. On the other hand, adults cannot leave along without friends as quoted no man is an island therefore they socialize just like children to make friends whom they can share ideas in problem solving. Adulthood and childhood phases learn new things from social interaction and observation. Next, from point of view children always learn new things about their friends and about others or they can learn things new about themselves while this is applicable to the adults who too often learn new things about themselves or about others. These are key values that help people to live with each other. In certainty adults and children have many similarities. They learn how to control them and they can train themselves differences ways of controlling themselves. Similar thoughts may produce different actions time will come in which children will grow and learn what is really expected of them. They have dreams that project how they would wish to shape their future life. Children will have dreams just like adults that will help them to maneuver as they reach their ambitions and desires after being pushed by the environmental factors and the society as whole. Therefore what thoughts they will make ultimately as a decision, what they learned as a child and what they opt to recall when they are adult will shape them into the human they want to be, regardless of defined as adult or children (Reitman, et al. 87). They will have their own thoughts, their own actions, and their personality will drift them through their life which will be only unique to them. They might be creative in a similar way and do things with passion. In adult and children actions that are formed from thoughts may be surprisingly similar or drastically different. But what is most unique and similar is the ability to do what they desire with reasons they wish. Therefore the idea of doing what praises someone is known as the will is a person which is very strong in both children and adult in various ways. However some criticizes this will as focus will of adults versus the natural will in children but is all the same. Both adult and children take care of themselves mostly to their bodies for instance mechanical injuries (Reitman, et al. 23). In children they cry after getting an injury while in adults they seek medical attentions. In conclusion adults are defined by the norms and values of the society, environment and individuals of the society. The experience the children obtain and accumulate while growing olds make the most important distinct of how they will be when they will be adults. It is understandable that children grow up to become to become diverse adults reflecting on their errors and trials which later turned to be their experience. However, these make tremendous change between adults and children which is referred as tolerance of desire and responsibility resulting to their actions.

Aging is a natural process that comes with new experiences as one's life moves on. The new encounters obscure the previous ones, often making a person to forget their past. A recall of the past memories rekindles forgotten experiences, making a person to realize how their behaviors and reasoning were primitive in their younger days. Literature is replete with many cases and works that touch on the theme of how childhood memories affect one's life during the adulthood. Adulthood, childhood, and the connection between the two are vivid in Neil Gaiman's Ocean at the End of the Lane. The protagonist in this novel visits his home after 40 years to attend a funeral. His presence in his childhood home revives old memories in a style that the author employs to juxtapose childhood and adulthood. He discovers that some of the things that he considered big were actually small, and her childhood skewed his view of those things. For example, he visits a small duck pond at the back of his childhood friend's house and remembers both of them used to call the pond an ocean. Further, he remembers her awful experiences with his nanny and realizes that adults do not have deep insights as children may have. There are many incidences in the novel that compare adults' and children's worldview, and all of them have a common link. And, all these incidences go on to prove that the world of children is characterized by fear, grief, disbelief, awe and that some adults do not live to the expectation of the children who are in their custody, thus leading to challenges in future between their relationship.

The children in the novel are the narrator and little Lettie Hempstock. The same characters are adults in the same text with additional figures such as Ursula Monkton, the narrator's parents, and the Hempstocks. The children in the text go through an experience that ordinary children do not encounter in normal social settings. These children struggle through childhood as they fight with superhuman beings devouring their flesh and souls. The two children often find themselves helpless as they fight to survive in a world where adults are less concerned about their tribulations. The people they look upon to for protection are absent to offer it, leaving them prone to attack by vicious supernatural creatures that seem to hamper their normal growth. However, two people stand out as reliable custodians. Lettie's mother and grandmother have a better understanding of the creatures interfering with the normal growth of these children. When the "hunger birds" are hell bent to eat the heart of the narrator, Lettie's grandmother repels them off, taking the role of the exorcist who saves the children from the malice of demons. There is an apparent disconnect between the children's and adults worldviews in this scenario. While Lettie and his friend cannot comprehend who these hunger birds are, her grandmother has a thorough understanding of their nature owing her old age. Even Lettie's mother has no role to play in their exorcism, meaning that she was not as experienced in vicious subjects as her grandmother was. Despite Lettie's grandmother's efforts to repel the hunger birds, they succeed in taking away with them the little girl's soul, leaving her at near death at the ocean near the Hempstock's house.

The novel depicts children as hopeless and defenseless beings who long for the often elusive company of their parents and close relations. It must be noted that adulthood is nothing but an outcome of all the lessons you have learned in your childhood and how you have evolved learning them. It is a transition from playful and exploratory being to a calculative and wiser human.

Adulthood is also the time when all those who have guided you through your childhood, watching your every step, are now gone only to watch you from a distance. They can only give suggestions, but now, your life and decisions are entirely your own. You take charge of your own life, dealing with your own social life, career, etc in your own way. You face the competitive and harsh world out there, on your own. You have no one but your own skills and attitude to help you out there.

Which is better – Childhood or Adulthood?

Well, the answer to the question is not definite but depends entirely on individual experiences of both stages. A child, who has faced adversities and poverty in childhood, might find it a harsh experience, worthy of forgetting. While an adult whose experiences of adulthood are not good enough would think that childhood was better. But there is one thing that we must understand – how harsh or difficult childhood is; it also presents ample opportunities to shape up your future. Amid all the difficulties there is still hope for improvement. Adulthood on the other hand is the time when you implement with full force what you have learned during childhood. You make an effort to shape your future and make true your childhood aspirations. So, both childhood and adulthood have their own benefits and each of them is better in its own way.

As humans, we are most immature and very innocent in this phase of our lives. Childhood stands for the ages up to 12, before entering teenage. Children have different perspectives pertaining to the world. They are candid and unapologetically themselves, something adults struggle at. They are honest and carefree. For a child, issues such as not doing simple homework are extremely dreadful and they do not care what land has been conquered by whom. Complex issues are just negligible in childhood. When we grow up, we can only reminisce about this time and live in those memories.

As they say, “Every happy memory created in childhood is a treasure of time”, childhood is sure a treasure. It is made up of innocently climbing on the walls, doing homework after returning from school, throwing tantrums for getting permission to have another piece of chocolate in the day, smiling all day because parents got ice cream on their way back home, feeling positive the entire day because the sports teacher substituted for the mathematics class in school, and so much more.

Childhood memories are marked by finding joy in every little thing. As children, we are unbothered and cream-filled biscuits while watching our favourite cartoon are enough for us to laugh heartily. When we try to remember our days back as a child, we observe that they were more about things that were uncomplex and simple. Uncomplicated is the best way to describe childhood memories. When people think or discuss these memories, then they feel very happy and delighted. That’s why we need to think and write about these memories. I have some really good memories from my childhood. I spent a long time in rural areas. 

I’ve completed my school from a village primary school. That was a very good experience for me. I can remember lots of incidents from there. I went to visit a village fair with my father and we bought lots of toys for me and my siblings. 

I still can feel the ‘Nagordola’, lots of people, colorful shops, and songs playing on loudspeakers when I close my eyes. These feelings and memories are priceless. I wish if I could go back to my past and see childhood again, that would be amazing. But I know it’s not possible. I miss my childhood a lot.

But still, he managed to spend a huge time with us. I loved his activities. He took us to different places for a picnic. My mom used to cook very delicious meals for us. I can remember, we were staying at a village in Bihar and it was the house of an uncle. We went for a long drive from there. 

There was an amazing side view on the road. I loved the villages of Bihar. The people were friendly. I spent an amazing time with my cousins there. These memories are very bright on my mind and I love to think about all those days.

The first day at school is the best childhood memory that I can recall. That was a tough day for me. I was not a good boy who wanted to go to school with his own wish. I did different things to not go to school. 

But finally, my father bought me some books, a school bag, and a school uniform and I agreed to go to school. The first day was full of scariness for me. We went to the headmaster’s room and he asked me some easy questions. I knew the answers but I was unable to answer due to lots of pressure going on in my head. 

I love to think about all of my childhood memories, these memories are my own and that’s what pushed me to create my personality and character. We all need to appreciate our memories in childhood.

I used to visit my native village sometimes. That was another exciting journey for me. I spent an amazing time with my cousins there. We went for a picnic and did lots of crazy things. 

A Horrible Experience of Childhood:

Along with lots of good experiences I have some horrible childhood experiences too. When I was five years old, I didn’t know how to swim. And that time I was in the village. We were playing football and there was a pond near the field. 

When the ball went to the pond, someone went and picked it. A boy thought I might know how to swim and he pushed me to the pond. When I was trying to come out of the water but couldn’t he was laughing and thinking that I was making fun. 

But when he realized he jumped and took me off the water. That was a very shocking memory that I can’t forget. It could be worse. 

I love to think about my old childhood memories. These memories bring a broad smile to my face. I know it’s the same for everyone. These memories are very much cute and loving. It could be a topic of gossip too. People love sharing things about their childhood, I do.

My mom took some delicious food items there. I can’t remember what exactly the dishes were, but they were amazing in taste. That was an incredible day. We sometimes visited our native village and that was the best moment for me and my cousins. 

We got enough space to run, play football, and do all the stuff that we can’t do in the city. When I think about my childhood, that takes a large part there. Because I have so many amazing memories related to village life. 

My First Day at School: 

The first day at school is a beautiful memory that I can remember clearly. That was a very special event for me. I was very excited. I have been preparing for school and worked very hard for three months. My mother was also working very hard to teach me all the basic things such as alphabets and a few rhymes. 

I was pretty confident. I got my new uniform, school bag, some books, and new shoes. And the day came and they took me to school. That is quite a popular school in the city. My parents took me to the headmaster’s room. 

He was a gentleman and he greeted us properly. I can remember he asked me some basic questions and I answered them confidently. He called an assistant teacher and sent me to my classroom . A class was going on there already and I joined it. I found tons of boys and girls my age. 

I made some friends on the first day. I went back and found my parents waiting for me. That was a pleasant experience for me. I will never forget that day. My parents were very supportive and that’s why everything was easy for me.
