Nursing Scholarship Essay Example

Wow! I never thought I would have my own scholarship , but this opportunity has come to fruition and I plan to use every dollar for the good of nursing. It is wonderful to be able to give back to the nursing profession, and it humbles me to be a part of this year’s recipient’s journey. I have been there, and nursing school is incredibly tough. To be able to ease the stress of that journey for a nurse pursuing his or her BSN is an honor !

I want to tell you why I believe scholarships are so important.

You always hear people talking about “nurse burnout”. Well, it is a real thing. Retirement is also a real thing. And the nursing shortage is a real thing . Therefore, we want and we need more nurses in this profession. I, personally, had to take out over $40,000 in student loans when I went to school, so I completely understand the need for scholarship and outside opportunities to fund your dreams. I want to live in a scholastic world where money does not stop one selfless human being from pursuing the most trusted profession in the world. Scholarships are super important to ensure that we can build up our profession with nurses for the future.

I would like to share an example of the Nurse Kelley Scholarship essay that I have written. It is completely true, and hopefully, this nursing scholarship essay example will give you a good idea of what we are looking for in a submission.

  There are many reasons someone might choose to go into the nursing profession. Maybe they “want to help people”. Maybe they love math and science. Maybe they want to give back to their community. Maybe their mom was a nurse. Whatever the reason may be, for most of us, it’s different. I chose to go into nursing because of a personal experience that I had when I was young. I lost my biological father to colon cancer, and I wanted to be a caring support system for other families going through what we did.  The strange thing about the many reasons people choose nursing, is that somehow, we are all still very connected in this choice.

You see, nursing is a profession where you have to take care of complete strangers, and we have signed on to do this for life.

Nursing is so incredibly unique and selfless in that what we do every single day is care for people who are at their most vulnerable moments, and we often times do it while missing something in our life that means something to us. We constantly sacrifice for our patients. We constantly give while barely taking.  The most important thing to remember is that we don’t mind. That’s what makes us different. We know what we have gotten ourselves into, and we love doing it. There is a special place in a nurse’s heart that draws them to the type of work that we do. And it brings us all together, our binding character trait.

I think I can say now that I guess my reason for going into nursing is a combination of everyone’s reason. They may spark from different experience, but we are intertwined in our methodology for career choice through our heart for others. I am PROUD to be a nurse!

I want to remind any nurse reading this that nursing will continue to choose you throughout your career. It is so funny how nursing just pulls you out of your everyday life as if to say, “nope, you don’t get to be a civilian today, you’re still a nurse”! I’ll give you an example. Four days after I was crowned Miss Colorado I was driving in my crown and sash away from an appearance as a car flipped over on our interstate and started on fire. Of course, I pulled over. A fireman also pulled over (that special place in our hearts, other service industry members have that too!), and we collectively (after removing the crown and sash) helped pull this man from his car and start working on him. It was wild. I remember shaking my head thinking, “thanks a lot, nursing”, and then giggling. How lucky I am to have been chosen by this profession!

Nursing is the best. It will be a part of you forever.

Scholarships for Single Parents

Scholarships for single parents typically target women who are trying to improve their living situations by earning an education.  Financial support often can cover educational costs as well as other expenses , since personal responsibilities can prevent single parents from having the time and money to return to school.

Soroptomist Live Your Dream Award

Open to:  Undergraduate female students of all majors who are the sole providers for their families.

Application Requirements:  Applicants must be able to prove financial need and that they’re the primary provider for themselves and their dependents. They must be enrolled in or accepted to a vocational/skills training program or undergraduate degree program. Applicants must reside in the U.S. or one of Soroptomist’s member countries or territories.

Award Amount and Terms:  Local club awards are $1,000, regional-level awards are either $3,000 or $5,000, and 3 national awards of $10,000 also are given. Recipients have the potential to receive up to $16,000 total. Funds can be used to pay for tuition, student loans, reliable childcare, or any expenses that may be interfering with the recipient’s ability to attend school.

Women’s Independence Scholarship Program, Inc.

Open to:  Single mothers with young children who have survived domestic violence and want to return to school to become self-sufficient.

Application Requirements:  Applicants must be separated from an abusive partner for at least 1 year, but not more than 7 years. They must maintain a grade point average of 2.75 or higher to apply. Applicants must also demonstrate financial need.

As the demand for qualified nurses increases and career opportunities expand, more men are considering a career in this predominantly female field.  Men account for about 14% of all RNs, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.  These scholarships support men as they develop the skills that will allow them to make an impact as nurses.

Nursing.org Breaking Barriers Scholarship for Men in Nursing

Open to:  Male students actively enrolled in an accredited nursing program.

Application Requirements:  All applicants must be U.S. citizens and at least 18 years old at the time of application. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required. Recipients must demonstrate outstanding character, ability, and confidence in nursing.

Award Amount and Terms:  A one-time award of $500 is paid to the recipient’s school. The recipient must participate in 2 brief interviews with a representative from Nursing.org. The first interview occurs at the time of the award and the second occurs 6 months later.

American Association for Men in Nursing (AAMN)

Open to:  Undergraduate and graduate male students currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program who are AAMN members.

Application Requirements:  Applicants must be attending an accredited university and have completed at least 1 academic term. Graduate nursing students include RN students pursuing a master’s, doctor of nursing practice, or PhD.

Scholarships for Veterans

Army Nurse Corps Association (ANCA) Scholarship

Open to:  Students currently enrolled in a baccalaureate or advanced nursing or nurse anesthesia program who are serving or have served in any branch of the U.S. Army, along with their parents, spouses and children.

Application Requirements:  Applicants must be U.S. citizens. Since the Army Nurse Corps does not have a relationship with the U.S. Army, the recipient does not have a military service obligation. Individuals receiving funding from a component of the U.S. Army are not eligible to apply.

Asian American / Pacific Islander Nurses Association Scholarship

Open to: Any member of AAPINA pursuing an undergraduate or graduate nursing degree.

Application Requirements: Two years of AAPINA membership and a currently active member, enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate (master’s or doctoral) nursing program, and evidence of excellent academic performance (GPA > 3.5/4.0).

Open to:  Third- and fourth-year minority nursing students enrolled in an accredited BSN program in the United States or an accelerated program leading to a BSN degree, such as  RN-to-BSN or BA-to-BSN . Students enrolled in the third or fourth year of an  accelerated master’s entry program  for nursing with bachelor’s degrees in fields other than nursing are also eligible.

Application Requirements:  Applicants must be a racial or ethnic minority. They must also be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

National American Arab Nurses Association Scholarships for Nursing Study

Open to: Students that have accepted or enrolled in a nursing program of nearly any level (associate to doctoral) and have Arab heritage.

Application Requirements: Must be a citizen or permanent resident of the U.S., have a GPA of 3.0 or greater, be able to demonstrate academic or professional leadership and evidence contribution to the healthcare of the Arab-American community.

NSCDA American Indian Nurse Scholarship Program

Open to:  Undergraduate and graduate nursing students enrolled in an accredited 2- or 4-year nursing program who are at least a quarter American Indian and enrolled in a tribe. Applicants not enrolled in a tribe who can prove direct tribal ancestry will be considered.

Application Requirements:  Applicants must be in good academic standing in pre-nursing or a healthcare or health education program. Students pursuing associate degrees must expect to graduate in 2 years, while those pursuing bachelor’s degrees must graduate in 4 years. Applicants must also prove financial need and a career goal directly related to the needs of the Native American people. Recipients of an Indian Health Service Scholarship are not eligible to apply.

Many scholarships are open to international students as well as U.S. residents who aren’t citizens.  These awards help to expand the pool of nursing professionals to include a diverse population.

R&D Systems Scholarship

Open to:  Students pursuing a baccalaureate, graduate, associate degree, or diploma in nursing or any science-related field are eligible.

Regional & State Scholarships

The current nursing shortage continues to create a high demand for registered nurses across the country. In response, many public and private organizations offer geographically specific scholarships to help increase the number of nursing professionals in that area.  Some regional awards require that recipients work for a period of time in the specified area to help remedy nursing shortages there.

Wherever you live, there are likely to be regional and state scholarships available. Unfortunately, we can’t list them all here, but you can find options with  a quick Google search for scholarships in your state. Here are a few notable examples to give you a preview of what you might find.

California Health Professionals Education Foundation (HPEF)

Open to:  Nursing students attending qualified nursing programs in California.

Application Requirements:  The HPEF administers 6 scholarship programs. Eligibility criteria differ by scholarship. The awards may require a period of service to a medically underserved community upon graduation.

Deadline:  The scholarship cycle opens on January 2, however deadlines varies each year. Visit the HPEF website for details.

Award Amount and Terms:  Award amounts vary by individual scholarship.

Georgia Nurses Foundation and Georgia Nurses Association Nursing Scholarship Awards

Open to:  Full- or part-time undergraduate and graduate students who are residents of Georgia and enrolled in an accredited nursing program.

Application Requirements:  The organizations co-sponsor 3 separate scholarships: the Katherine Pope Scholarship for a non-RN student seeking a baccalaureate degree in nursing; the Annie Lou Overton Scholarship for an RN student seeking a baccalaureate degree in nursing; and the Kathryn Suggs Chance Leonard Scholarship for students pursuing a master’s or doctoral degree in nursing. Undergraduate applicants must have a GPA of at least 2.5, while graduate applicants require a GPA of 3.0 in prior nursing education. Kaiser Permanente Healthcare Career Scholarship

Open to:  High school seniors at each of 139 eligible high schools in the Kaiser Permanente Northwest service area, which spans north of Longview, Washington to Eugene, Oregon.

Application Requirements:  Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 and plan to pursue a healthcare career full-time at a non-profit U.S. accredited college or university. No proof of U.S. citizenship or legal permanent residency is required. Consideration is given to diverse students and those from economically or socially disadvantaged backgrounds.

Deadline:  Early December. Registration opens in September with more details.

Award Amount and Terms:  A winner is chosen from each of the 139 eligible high schools. The one-time awards range from $2,000 to $10,000. Awards from $5,000 to $10,000 are for the most qualified applicants and are split between 2 payments in the fall of the first and second years of college. After their second year of college, recipients can apply for an additional one-time scholarship for their third year and or a paid summer internship at Kaiser Permanente.

Nursing Foundation of Pennsylvania (NFP) Scholarships

Open to:  Undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate nursing students attending a nursing school in Pennsylvania.

Application Requirements:  The NFP administers several scholarships with various application criteria. Specific eligibility requirements for each scholarship are on the website. Separate applications are needed for each scholarship.

Award Amounts and Terms:  Award amounts vary by scholarship.

Pride Foundation Scholarship

Open to: Residents of Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon or Washington who are pursuing postsecondary education in the following school year and who identify as LGBTQ+.

Application Requirements: Must submit three essays, a resume and an academic transcript (transcripts required for WA residents only).

Deadline: Exact deadline varies each year. Check the Pride Foundation’s website for details.

Award Amount and Terms: Multiple people are selected to win varying amounts. In 2021, they awarded scholarships to 108 students totaling $705,000.

How to Apply: Create an account and submit an application through their online portal.

Many scholarships don’t have GPA requirements or consider academic experience. These scholarships can be valuable to students whose GPAs don’t reflect their educational commitments. They can also even the odds for older applicants, whose most recent GPA may be years or even decades old and not representative of their current scholastic abilities.

Niche Nursing Scholarship

Open to:  All high school and college students interested in studying nursing.

Application Requirements:  Applicants must have a current free account on the scholarship search website Niche. Applicants without an account must create one to access the application. There are no essay, recommendation, or minimum GPA requirements.

Award Amount and Terms:  A $500 scholarship is awarded each year.

Graduate & Doctoral Nursing Scholarships

Nursing students pursuing graduate and doctoral degrees may have drained their financial resources to earn their bachelor’s degrees. Nurses Educational Funds, Inc. (NEF) Scholarships

Open to:  Full- or part-time master’s or doctoral students who are pursuing a degree in nursing.

Application Requirements:  The NEF Board of Directors reviews application for more than 20 scholarships for advanced degrees in nursing. Some scholarships concentrate on areas of specialization. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, maintain a minimum GPA of 3.6, and have a current RN license from any U.S. state. National professional nursing association membership is also required.

Uniform Advantage-GNSA Scholarship

Open to: Members of the Graduate Nursing Student Academy (GNSA) who are seeking a master’s or doctoral degree.

Application Requirements: Must currently be enrolled in a graduate nursing program, a GNSA member, have a GPA of 3.5 or greater and be a U.S. citizen.

Deadline: January 31 and September 30.

Award Amount and Terms: Two $2500 scholarships are awarded, one in spring and one in fall.

California Emergency Nurses Association

Amount : Varies Deadline : July 31, 2023

Available to : The California ENA awards two scholarships each year.

The Terri Sturgill Scholarship is awarded to a non-nurse enrolled in a nursing program and pursuing an initial RN license.

The Daniel Kelleher Scholarship is awarded to someone who has an RN license, is enrolled in a nursing program, and has shown commitment to the ENA.

Coursey Enterprises Student Scholarships

Available to : The Coursey Enterprises Student Scholarship is for first-year nursing students enrolled in an RN or LPN program.

Dare to Soar Career Mobility Scholarship

Amount: $1,000 Deadline: October 15, 2022

Available to: The DARE to Soar Mobility Scholarship is available to American Nephrology Nurse Association (ANNA) members pursuing a bachelor’s or graduate degree.

DAR Caroline E. Holt Nursing Scholarship

Amount : $2,500 Deadline : Beginning of November – end of January for next school year

Available to: The DAR Caroline E. Holt Nursing Scholarship is for students who have been accepted or are currently enrolled in an accredited school of nursing and are in financial need.

Requirements: Students need to prove financial need and provide a letter of acceptance to a nursing program or current transcript.

ENA Foundation Scholarships

Amount: Between $1,000 and $10,000 Deadline: Academic Scholarships: March 1-April 29; Conference Scholarships: March 14-April 18

Available to: The ENA Foundation Scholarships are available to members and nonmembers seeking to further their education with degrees ranging from associates to doctoral degrees, as well as conference scholarships for members interested in attending ENA’s annual education and networking event.

The Foundation of the National Student Nurses’ Association General Scholarship

Amount : Up to $10,000 Deadline : February 11, 2023

Available to : This nursing school scholarship is available to current U.S. students. These scholarships typically reflect a specific area of specialization within the nursing profession such as oncology, critical care, emergency nursing, or a certain population of the nursing profession that is often underrepresented who plan on focusing on a specialty area.

• Students currently enrollment and matriculated in a state-approved nursing program leading to an associate degree, baccalaureate, diploma, direct-entry master’s degree; or enrolled in an RN to BSN completion, RN to MSN completion, or LPN/LVN to RN program;

Available to: Three scholarships are awarded to students who are:

Requirements: Students must be in good academic standing and have never received an eQuality graduate student scholarship. Candidates must have served the LGBT+ community and experienced hardship or special circumstances. Specific requirements vary by award.

Army Nurse Corps Association (ANCA) Scholarship

Amount: $3,000 Deadline: Deadlines change every year (usually in late fall or early winter). The most up-to-date information is posted on the ANCA website yearly in the fall.

Available to: This nursing school scholarship is open to students who are enrolled in a bachelor, advanced nursing, or nurse anesthesia program who are serving or have served in any branch of the U..S. Army. This scholarship is also available to their parents, spouses, and children.

• Are serving or have previously served in any branch, at any rank, of a component of the US Army (Active Army, Army National Guard, or Army Reserve);
• Are not currently receiving funding by a component of the US Army (e.g., ROTC scholarship students and students receiving full GI Bill benefits are not eligible); and
• As applicable, have received an Honorable Discharge.
• Nursing or anesthesia students whose parent(s), spouse, or child(ren) have current or previous service in a component of the US Army.

VFW’s Sport Clips Help a Hero Scholarship

Available to: This scholarship helps active duty, honorably discharged, retired, National Guard, or Reserve members who are enrolled or admitted into a VA-approved program or school at an accredited institution are eligible.

Abbott Scholarship Fund

Deadline: April 15, 2023 Amount: $10,000

Available to: Undergraduate and graduate nursing students can apply for up to 8 scholarships, depending on their education path. 5 $10,000 scholarships are available for nursing students, 2 for seeking to be a nurse practitioner and 1 for PhDs. The scholarship is offered in partnership between the Abbot Scholarship Fund and the National Black Nurses Association. Selection criteria include interest in clinical trials and primary care, volunteerism and the student’s background, financial need and academic performance.

Requirements: Students must be graduate or postgraduate students attending a university. Applicants must also be affiliated with the National Black Nurses Association.

American Indian Science & Engineering Society (AISES) A.T. Anderson Scholarship

Amount: $1,000 for undergraduate students, $2,000 for graduate students Deadline: May 31, 2023

Available to: AISES members pursuing any STEM-related degree such as Architecture, Mathematics, Medical Sciences, Physical Science, Technology, Nursing, Engineering, or Natural Resources.

• Applicants must be: an enrolled citizen or a descendant of an enrolled citizen of a federal or state-recognized American Indian Tribe or Alaska Native Village; or Native Hawaiian or descendant from a Native Hawaiian; or Pacific Islander or descendant from Pacific Islander; or Indigenous person of Canada. Enrollment documents and/or a copy of birth certificate(s) showing descendancy from an enrolled citizen, Indigenous group of Canada, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander are acceptable. Applicant may also, instead, provide a copy of their Certificate of Degree of Indian Blood or Certificate of Degree of Alaska Native Blood (CDIB) card. Please note, AISES may not always have scholarships available for non-citizens of the United States.

Requirements: Students must be studying for an undergraduate degree or higher at an accredited university.

Dr. Martha Dawson Genesis Scholarship

Deadline: April 15, 2023 Amount: $1,000

Available to: Black graduate or postgraduate students who are members of the National Black Nurses Association. Candidate may be an RN seeking master’s, DNP, PhD in leadership or EdD who are pursuing a role in leadership or administration.

NSCDA American Indian Nurse Scholarship (AINS) Program

Amount: Recipients receive $1,500 per semester. Students can receive the award every semester as long as they remain in good standing. Deadline: June 1 for the fall scholarship and December 1 for the spring scholarship.

Available to: This nursing school scholarship gives students of American Indian descent the opportunity to pursue careers in nursing. The students are expected to return to work among their people to help improve health care. Some students work on reservations, and others find employment in hospitals in areas largely populated by American Indians. The career goals now include not only nursing careers, but jobs in health care and health education, as well.

Requirements: Students must be enrolled in a pre-nursing, healthcare, or a health education program. Students enrolled in an associate’s degree program must graduate in two years. Students enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program must graduate in four years. Applicants must prove financial need and plan on working in a field that helps Native American people directly.

Healthline Stronger Scholarship

Amount: $5,000 Deadline: April 25, 2023

Available to: This scholarship is open to all students enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program. Previously, it was focused upon students who identify as Black, Indigenous, Hispanic/Latinx, and Pacific Islander.

• Be a college junior or senior or graduate student in Fall 2022;
• Demonstrate leadership and community involvement;
• Demonstrate commitment to reducing health inequalities in their community.

William K. Schubert Minority Nursing Scholarship

Amount: $2,750 Deadline: April 30

Available to: This nursing school scholarship is available to those students who wish to increase the diversity of registered nurses at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center . The program grants awards annually to assist with tuition and fees for persons who are preparing to be pediatric registered nurses that provide patient care. The student should be a member of one of the underrepresented groups in the registered nursing profession. Underrepresented groups include male nurses/nursing students and nurses/nursing students who are American Indian or Alaskan Native, Black or African American, Hawaiian Native or other Pacific Islander, Hispanic or Latino, and/or Asian including Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Korean, Asian Indian, Thai, or Vietnamese/Southeast Asian.

Requirements: Student must be enrolled or accepted in a prelicensure registered nurse program (bachelor’s or master’s degree) at an accredited school of nursing on a full-time or part-time basis, earning a 2.75 GPA or better.

Writing a strong essay is one of the best ways to put yourself in the running to land a nursing scholarship .

1. fully understand the requirements and criteria.

Before you write a single word, you must examine the application requirements and criteria. 

First, you need to make sure that you meet all of the minimum requirements to avoid wasting any time. 

If you do meet all of the requirements, you should go through the application with a fine tooth comb, making a note of the experience, skills, and qualifications required. Doing so will ensure you know what to focus on in your essay.

2. Create a solid essay outline

Armed with your notes, the next step is creating a working essay outline. Studies show that stories resonate well with humans and tend to be more impactful than facts or statistics alone in writing.

So, when you’re creating your outline, you should mark out a definitive beginning, middle, and end to keep your essay readers engaged and invested throughout. Here’s a basic outline structure for your reference:

• Beginning: Summarize why you’re applying for the scholarship and what you’re going to cover in your essay.
• Middle: Explain exactly why you want to be a nurse, and why you’re the ideal candidate. Cover the skills and experience requirements from the application brief and back them up with real-life examples.
• End: Finish strong by communicating why the institution offering the scholarship is the right fit for you, reiterate your passion for nursing, and finish with an impactful line that sticks in the memory.

3. Study the essays of past scholarship winners

Want to know the most overlooked, yet impactful, piece of advice for writing a great scholarship essay?

Read the essays of past scholarship winners if you can!  

Doing so will give you an idea of what your reader is looking for in the essay. 

Do they talk about their future nursing plans a lot? Do they share a very specific and personal story that led them to choose this career path?

Identifying the trends in previous winners’ essays will provide you with invaluable insight that you can use to write your own. In addition, pay attention to the following: 

• How the essay is formatted
• How the essay is structured
• How the winning applicant communicated their skills and experience
• How the winning applicant approached their writing style in terms of language and sentence structure.

While you want to make sure you write your essay in your own words and your own voice, taking note of the elements other writers have included can help you craft your essay. 

4. Be clear and concise

While you probably have a lot to write about, there is (generally) a word limit, typically 500 to 1000 words. This means that you must be extremely clear and concise with the words you choose. 

To create the biggest  possible impact with the fewest words, you should aim to use the active tense as much as possible. Not only will this make you sound confident but it will also prevent you from going off course and rambling. 

Use action words where appropriate and be as ruthless as possible with your edits, chopping out any words, information or phrases that seem like fluff and filler words.

5.  Describe why you want to become a nurse

In the middle—or heart—of your essay, you will need to explain precisely why you want to become a nurse. 

To get this essential element of your nursing scholarship essay just right, you will need to:

• Dig deep and consider your personal motivations for becoming a nurse
• Communicate which aspects of the job or vocation appeal to you most
• State the professional & personal challenges you want to overcome
• Offer a brief insight into your ultimate aims, goals or dreams as a nurse

Condensing this level of personal detail and passion into a paragraph or two is no easy feat, but by working through the above four exercises and leaving yourself enough time to create, arrange, and edit, you can do it.

Looking for scholarship examples online for inspiration is a good idea, but remember, this is about you and your motivations. If you simply copy & paste a template from the web, you will fail to make an impact. Don’t do it.

6. Share your plans for the future

Following on from your ‘why I want to become a nurse statement’, you should offer a deeper insight into your plans for the future.

Sharing your future plans and aspirations will showcase your passion as well as your long term commitment—so including this information in your nursing scholarship essay is essential.

Do you want to become head of a hospital department? Do you want to ultimately specialize in a particular area of nursing? Do you want to serve your local area and create community-driven nursing initiatives? Perhaps you want to make your mark in the education sector? 

Only you know what your ultimate aspirations are, but the point is—make sure you include them in your essay.

7. Have a friend proofread your essay

A fresh set of eyes is always helpful when it comes to proofreading your essay, because you want it to be near perfect from start to finish. Having a trusted friend or mentor proofread your essay provides an opportunity to get  feedback on your content and  any potential errors or typos you may have missed.

Talk about your existing skills and experience based on the application brief, backing up your statements with an example or two.

Talk about activities or events you’ve participated in as well as practical skills that make you an excellent candidate. Again, use examples here.

Move onto your ‘why I want to become a nurse’ statement, followed by an insight into your career-based goals, aims, and aspirations.

State why you have the personal attributes to be a successful candidate, explain why you make an excellent fit for this particular scholarship and end with an impactful, emotive line that showcases your passion for nursing.

Nursing scholarships may cover tuition, room and board and other education-related expenses . Scholarships may be given for one year or may renew for several years, and the annual amount will depend on the scholarship provider.

How to apply for a nursing scholarship

The application process for a nursing scholarship is similar to many other scholarships. First, you should start the research process as soon as possible. Note any scholarships that you might be eligible for and use a spreadsheet to organize the deadlines and any pertinent requirements. Set reminders on your calendar to note when the applications are due.

If the scholarship requires a recommendation letter, decide who to ask and give them at least a few weeks’ notice to write the Letter of Recommendation (LOR) and possibly offer them a sort of “template” to limit the amount of time they will be required to invest. Most likely they will have some experience writing such letters, but if you don't ask far enough in advance, they may not have time to accommodate you. Start working on the essay as soon as possible so you have enough time to write a draft, ask for edits from a trusted source and work on revisions.

When can I apply for nursing scholarships?

There is no set season for nursing scholarship applications, and the exact deadline for nursing scholarships can vary. Set aside time each month to review new scholarship opportunities and figure out how to apply. You can sign up for notifications from scholarship websites to find out when new awards are posted.

How can I maximize my chances of winning a scholarship?

You can improve the odds of winning a nursing scholarship by following the scholarship guidelines carefully. Many students hurt their chances by not reviewing the requirements and submitting the application after the deadline.

Can I get a full ride to nursing school?

While a single, "full-ride" scholarship is not very common, it is certainly possible to find and apply for a number of available scholarships. Also, there are other scholarships you will qualify for that are not specifically intended for nursing school but that can be used to get your nursing degree.

For example, the March of Dimes Graduate Nursing Scholarship is available for graduate level students and they offer a Nursing Diversity Scholarship for historically underrepresented undergraduate students.

Do I need to fill out the FAFSA to qualify for a scholarship?

You should definitely complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) regardless of your major or the type of scholarships you feel you are best qualified for. For example, the Nellie Martin Carman Scholarship asks for proof that students have submitted the FAFSA. Also, internal awards directly given by the school may require that students complete the FAFSA. You can contact the school's financial aid department to see what their specific rules are.

Even if the FAFSA is not required, completing it will make you eligible for federal student loans , work-study and grants, including the Pell Grant . Also, many states mandate that you complete the FAFSA to be eligible for their own grants. In general, all students should complete the FAFSA, even if they don’t think they will qualify for need-based aid.

Can I get a nursing scholarship as a graduate or doctoral student?

While there are usually more nursing scholarships for undergraduate students, graduate and doctoral students can still find plenty of scholarship opportunities.

Are nursing scholarships based on financial need?

Like other kinds of awards, some nursing scholarships may only be given to students with demonstrated financial need. However, there are also plenty of opportunities for students who do not qualify based on their family’s financial status. Read through the scholarship description to determine if need is a factor.
