Microsoft 365 Life Hacks > Writing > Rules for writing a thesis statement

Rules for writing a thesis statement

If you struggle with writing thesis statements, you’re not alone—there are plenty of rules that go into writing them. Learn the different rules to write a strong thesis statement that will shape a persuasive argument for your essay.

A person writing in a notebook

What is a thesis statement?

A thesis statement is a sentence that summarizes the main points or themes of your essay. Not only does it establish the core of your argument, every point you make in your essay should reinforce it. To write a strong thesis statement, you should know where to put it, what it should include, and how long it should be.

Follow these rules to create a strong thesis statement.

Know what to include in your thesis statement

Use this checklist as a guide to ensure you write a strong thesis statement right from the beginning. A good thesis statement should:

  • Be debatable
  • Can be supported
  • Makes a clear, specific point
  • Make the reader care about your stance
  • Answer the essay’s prompt or question
  • Not contain a question

Here’s an example of a weak thesis statement:

  • Access to clean water is a serious concern that should be considered.

Why is this weak? The above thesis doesn’t contain a persuasive argument or specific, compelling facts.

Here’s an example of a strong thesis statement:

  • Improving irrigation, recycling wastewater, and developing better water conservation technologies are essential to providing people around the world with clean water.

Why is this strong? This thesis makes clear, specific points that can be supported with facts.

Use a confident tone

For a powerful thesis statement, write with a confident tone . Especially when writing a persuasive essay or an argumentative essay , confidence goes a long way. Make sure to research your points and back them with supporting facts throughout your essay. Simply “doing your homework” can push you to write with more certainty.

Know where to put your thesis statement

A thesis statement should always go at the end of your introductory paragraph. In this position, the statement captures the audience’s attention and sets the stage for what they can expect in the following paragraphs.

Make your thesis statement the right length

Concise and to the point, effective thesis statements are usually only one sentence long. The length of your thesis may vary depending on the prompt and complexity of your paper. There’s no specific rule as to how many words your thesis statement should be, but 20 to 50 words is a common length.

Use the correct punctuation

Don’t use question marks. A thesis statement should not be raised in the form of a question—so question marks have no place in an effective thesis.

Similarly, while you may be excited about your thesis statement, don’t use exclamation points either. This is standard for most common forms of academic writing as well.

Avoid quotations

While tempting, don’t use a quote as your thesis statement. Unfortunately, one of the rules of thesis writing is that you can’t use quotes in it. Your thesis statement should reflect the points discussed in your paper as well as the stance you are taking, and it’s unlikely you can find a single quote that can do that.

Use a third-person voice

Don’t use phrases like “I think,” “I feel,” or “I believe” in your thesis statement, as using first-person phrases can weaken the impact of your thesis. In general, most academic papers require writing in the third person.

Writing a thesis statement can feel challenging but knowing the seven different rules that go into creating one will make the process easier. Next, explore how you can master the art of essay writing .

With Researcher in Microsoft Word, you can reduce the time you spend researching your school essay or research paper. Close your web browser and use Word’s built-in tool.

Quick Links

What can you do with researcher, open researcher in microsoft word, review relevant topics and top sources, add topic items to your document.

Microsoft wants to make your research easier. With the Word Researcher tool, you can close your web browser and get sources for school essays, research papers, and similar documents in a few clicks.

The Researcher feature, powered by Bing, gives you a handy search box to find people, events, places, and concepts. The results of your search provide you with relevant topics and top sources including books, journals, websites, and images.

When you select the source you want, you can see an overview, history, location, images, and other important details. And the best part is, you never leave your Microsoft Word document.

In addition to viewing the details for your topic, you can start an outline for your paper as well as adding and citing text. Click the main subject or one of the information sections and add it directly to your document.

Here, we'll show you how to reduce the time you spend researching and speed up the creation of your paper with the Researcher tool in Microsoft Word.

At the time of writing,  Researcher is available with Word for Microsoft 365, Word for Microsoft 365 for Mac, and Word 2016. It is available to Microsoft 365 subscribers for Windows desktop clients.

To use the Researcher tool, open the "References" tab of your Word document. Click "Researcher" from the "Research" section of the ribbon.

When the pane opens on the right, type a term into the Search box and you're on your way!

Click Researcher on the References tab

You'll receive results for your search with Relevant Topics at the top and Top Sources beneath.

Relevant Topics

Some topics may only give you a couple of Relevant Topics. Click "More Topics" below that section to see additional sources.

Click More Topics under Relevant Topics

If you click one of the Relevant Topics, you'll see a nice overview of the subject. At the end of the "Overview" section, click "Read More" for full details.

Click Read More for Relevant Topic details

Depending on your topic, you'll then see several block sections packed with details. This structure comes in handy for starting your outline with them, which we'll describe below.

If the subject and Relevant Topic have images, you can click "See All Images" for a neat grid of photos and illustrations. Click one to open your browser and view the image online. Plus, you can add these to your document, which we'll also show you below.

Click See All Images for a Relevant Topic

Top Sources

For even more options, the "Top Sources" area offers books, journals, and websites. Select any one of those for its details.

Researcher Top Sources

If you choose a Relevant Topic at the top first, you can then filter your Top Sources by subtopic. Click the drop-down box for "All Topics" and pick one.

Click All Topics under a Relevant Topic

While most of the material is contained within Word, you may come across a source here and there that you must open in your browser. Click the link to open the source site in your default web browser.

Click Open it in Your Browser

Along with viewing information on your topic, you can add headings, text, and images directly to your document using Researcher.

Add Headings

On the top right of each source's section, you'll see a plus sign. Click the "+" icon to add that section as a collapsible heading for your document outline. Remember, this only adds the heading, not the text, within the section.

Click the plus sign to add a heading

If you want to add a snippet of text to your document, you can do this as well. Select the text from the source by dragging your cursor through it. When you release, you'll see a small box appear with options for "Add and Cite" and "Add."

Click Add and Cite or Add

When you choose "Add and Cite," the text will pop into your document with the source cited at the end of the snippet. The citation is formatted automatically, so you can add it to a bibliography easily.

Cited text added

When you choose "Add," the text will still appear in your document, but without the citation.

Text added

If your topic offers images, and you click "See All Images," you have the option to add one or more of those, too. This is super convenient because you don't have to hunt them down yourself.

Click the "+" icon in the corner of the image to add it to your paper.

Click the plus sign to add an image

It will appear in your document with the source cited beneath it.

Image added with citation

Be sure to respect copyrights when using the available images for your purpose. If you're unsure whether you can use an image, click "Learn More" above the image grid. This takes you to the Microsoft legal webpage explaining copyright and offering FAQs. You can also check our article on images with a Creative Commons License for those sources from Creative Commons.

College essays and research papers are enough work in themselves. By using Researcher in Microsoft Word, you can ease the burden of the research for your document and get a jumpstart on its contents.

Write Ideas, a new app from the Microsoft Garage, helps students bring their ideas to the page

For Claudia Vormbaum, 23, overcoming her academic struggles due to ADHD and dyslexia is a continuous work in progress. But as an intern for the  Microsoft Garage in Vancouver, Canada, she spent four months with other interns on a team developing an inclusively-designed app that helps students with the pre-writing process.

Write Ideas is a new app for iOS that focuses on alleviating the difficulty of getting started on book reports, essays and more. It does so through guided prompts and exercises, including speech-to-text and drawing features.

“I have a lot of empathy for kids that struggle in school and feel different than the other kids because I have a learning disability myself and I’ve been there,” says Vormbaum, a junior who majors in Interaction Design at Sheridan College, just outside Toronto, Canada. “I’m very interested in education and inclusive design and as such, Write Ideas felt like the perfect project for me where I could make an impact in the lives of children struggling in school like I did.”

She was responsible for user research, designing the experience and user interface of the application, as well as branding and marketing materials.

microsoft essay writing topics

Mike Tholfsen, principal program manager for the education team at Microsoft, collaborated with the original hackathon team that came up with the concept that would eventually become Write Ideas. He helped pitch the idea to the interns, who choose projects to work on for the four months they’re at the Microsoft Garage.

The Garage,  which celebrated a major milestone in November , is the outlet for Microsoft teams around the world to get experimental apps and projects out to the public, such as  Arrow Launcher v3 , as well as  Email Insights ,  Video Breakdown ,  Clip Layer ,  Kaizala ,  Sprightly ,  News Pro 3.0  and  Color Binoculars .

The interns’ sponsor on the project, Ailsa Leen, a Vancouver-based program manager on the OneNote team, says, “This project wouldn’t have been the same without The Garage team. The interns put their all into it, and brought so much creativity and passion to the project. I hope we’re able to sponsor many more projects with The Garage.”

Leen says Garage interns look for “a good amount of independence and ability to take on a project as their own. We had a compelling problem to be solved and a direction it could be solved. But there wasn’t a lot of specifics, so there was a lot of opportunity for them to explore and make the project their own.”

The app’s inclusive design approach enables increased access, reduced friction and more emotional context to the greatest number of people. Inspired by the needs of people with disabilities, designs like that which fueled Write Ideas create more usable, innovative experiences for everyone.

“The interns took the initial idea and started meeting with teachers and students, went into schools, brought people in,” Tholfsen says. “They went way beyond the original prototype and what we expected. They designed a beautiful app, they added more capabilities, learning tool pieces, line spacing and parts of speech. They added read aloud, a whole host of things. Ultimately, it became Write Ideas.”

Along with that autonomous appeal, the interns also relished a chance to work on something that could benefit many people.

“There was definitely a ‘change-the-world’ aspect to this,” Tholfsen says. “They were excited about the possibility of creating something that could help students write better. The app’s personalization, being able to pre-write and capture content could help all kids.”

microsoft essay writing topics

“For many people with dyslexia, getting out the words onto paper, whether it’s writing or typing, can be difficult,” says Tholfsen, who’s worked closely with dyslexia experts.

He says that’s what makes the app so helpful.

“What’s nice is that it captures that whole process, and creates an outline, essentially,” Tholfsen says. “So now instead of having a blank page, which impacts children with learning disabilities more severely, it actually prompts a student and gives him or her a full outline of their ideas. It’s much more important for them to get their ideas out than spending all their mental energy typing or spelling the words right.”

Leen says the blank page problem is “something we can all empathize with.”

There was definitely a ‘change-the-world’ aspect to this

When the interns returned to school, another team took the project to the finish line: The Vancouver Education team, which is chartered with education engineering efforts, says Adam Kelly, an engineering manager on the Vancouver team.

“We saw a lot of potential by the great work the interns had done and the feedback the app had received in its private beta and we decided to move forward to a public, scaled up release,” he says. “The team is planning to listen and learn from new users as we start to work with the app, as well as partner with specific schools who are piloting the app in their English classes. We’ll incorporate feedback and build on what they learn.”

For educators who saw the app in preview, it struck the right chords.

“When I downloaded Write Ideas, I could see many uses for students, teachers and administrators as a quick tool to plan and outline a proper document,” says Sandi Adams, a technology project specialist for the Cherokee County School District in Georgia. Her role is to introduce and pilot new technology projects and to help integrate them into the classroom. She’s worked in technology and education for more than 20 years. “Being able to develop an idea for essays, letters, articles, short stories or book reviews on the fly is genius. I love the opportunities for students to outline and organize their thoughts for writing projects. But I really love the idea for myself as I am developing a presentation and making notes. It really helps with brainstorming and working through your flow of ideas.”

For Vormbaum, the app’s template structure resonates with what she feels would’ve helped her in earlier struggles.

Working on a project that hit home for her also helped.

“I think the most satisfying part of working on Write Ideas was watching all our work come to life during our four-month internship period, as the application was built from conception to release,” she says. “To have had so much ownership over a project during an internship was really exciting and a big responsibility and opportunity we were lucky to have. We received a lot of validation from real students and teachers throughout the process of building the application, which was really encouraging as well to know that we were on the right track.”

ChatGPT vs. Microsoft Copilot vs. Gemini: Which is the best AI chatbot?

maria-diaz

Artificial intelligence (AI) has transformed how we work and play  in recent months, giving almost anyone the ability to write code , create art , and even make investments .

Special Feature

The Rise of Generative AI

A new wave of AI tools has taken the world by storm and given us a vision for a new way of working and finding the information that can streamline our work and our lives. We show you the ways tools like ChatGPT and other generational AI software are making impacts on the world, how to harness their power, as well as potential risks.

For professional and hobbyist users alike, generative AI tools, such as  ChatGPT , offer advanced capabilities to create decent-quality content from a simple prompt given by the user.

Keeping up with all the latest AI tools can get confusing, especially as Microsoft added  GPT-4 to Bing  and renamed it to Copilot,  OpenAI added new capabilities to ChatGPT , and Bard got plugged into the Google ecosystem  and rebranded to Gemini.

Also: Microsoft Copilot Pro vs. OpenAI's ChatGPT Plus: Which is worth your $20 a month?

Knowing which of the three most popular AI chatbots is best to write code , generate text , or help build resumes is challenging, so we'll break down the biggest differences so you can choose one that fits your needs.

Testing ChatGPT vs. Microsoft Copilot vs. Gemini

To help determine which AI chatbot gives more accurate answers, I'm going to use a simple prompt to compare the three:

"I have 5 oranges today, I ate 3 oranges last week. How many oranges do I have left?"

The answer should be five, as the number of oranges I ate last week doesn't affect the number of oranges I have today, which is what we're asking the three bots. First up, ChatGPT.

You should use ChatGPT if...

 width=

1. You want to try the most popular AI chatbot

ChatGPT was created by OpenAI and released for a widespread preview in November 2022. Since then, the AI chatbot quickly gained over 100 million users, with the website alone seeing 1.8 billion visitors a month. It's been at the center of controversies , especially as people uncover its potential to do schoolwork and replace some workers.

 width=

The free version of ChatGPT, which runs on the default GPT-3.5 model, gave the wrong answer to our question.

I've been testing ChatGPT almost daily since its release. Its user interface has remained simple, but minor changes have improved it greatly, like the addition of a copy button, an edit option, Custom Instructions , and easy access to your account.

Also: How to use ChatGPT

Though ChatGPT has proven itself as a valuable AI tool, it can be prone to misinformation . Like other large language models (LLMs), GPT-3.5 is imperfect, as it is trained on human-created data up to January 2022. It also often fails to comprehend nuances, like it did with our math question example, which it answered incorrectly by saying we have two oranges left when it should be five.

2. You're willing to pay extra for an upgrade

OpenAI lets users access ChatGPT -- powered by the GPT-3.5 model -- for free with a registered account. But if you're willing to pay for the Plus version, you can access GPT-4 and many more features for $20 per month.

Also: How to write better ChatGPT prompts for the best generative AI results

GPT-4 is the largest LLM available for use when compared to all other AI chatbots and is trained with data up to April 2023 and can also access the internet, powered by Microsoft Bing. GPT-4 is said to have over 100 trillion parameters; GPT-3.5 has 175 billion parameters. More parameters essentially mean that the model is trained on more data, which makes it more likely to answer questions accurately and less prone to hallucinations.

 width=

ChatGPT Plus, which runs using the GPT-4 model, did answer the question correctly.

As an example, you can see the GPT-4 model, available through a ChatGPT Plus subscription , answered the math question correctly, as it understood the full context of the problem from beginning to end.

Also: I tried Microsoft Copilot's new AI image-generating feature, and it solves a real problem

Next up, let's consider Microsoft Copilot (formerly Bing chat) , which is a great way to access GPT-4 for free, as it's integrated into its new Bing format.

You should use Microsoft Copilot if...

 width=

1. You want more up-to-date information

In contrast to the free version of ChatGPT, which is limited to being an AI tool that generates text in a conversational style with information leading up to early 2022, Copilot can access the internet to deliver more current information, complete with links for sources.

Also: How to use Copilot (formerly called Bing Chat)

There are other benefits, too. Copilot is powered by GPT-4, OpenAI's LLM, and it's completely free to use. Unfortunately, you are limited to five responses on a single conversation, and can only enter up to 2,000 characters in each prompt.

 width=

Copilot's Precise conversation style answered the question accurately, though other styles fumbled.

Copilot's user interface isn't as straightforward as that of ChatGPT, but it's easy to navigate. Though Bing Chat can access the internet to give you more up-to-date results compared to ChatGPT, I've found it is more prone to stall at replying and altogether miss prompts than its competitor.

2. You prefer more visual features

Through a series of upgrades to its platform, Microsoft added visual features to Copilot, formerly Bing Chat. At this point, you can ask Copilot questions like, 'What is a Tasmanian devil?' and get an information card in response, complete with photos, lifespan, diet, and more for a more scannable result that is easier to digest than a wall of text.

 width=

All about the Tasmanian devil on Microsoft Copilot.

When you use Copilot, you can also ask it to create an image for you. Give Copilot the description of what you want the image to look like, and have the chatbot generate four images for you to choose from.

Also: How to use Image Creator from Microsoft Designer (formerly Bing Image Creator)

Microsoft Copilot also features different conversational styles when you interact with the chatbot, including Creative, Balanced, and Precise, which alter how light or straightforward the interactions are.

 width=

Both the Balanced and Creative conversation styles in Microsoft Copilot answered my question inaccurately.

Finally, let's turn to Google's Gemini, formerly known as Bard, which uses a different LLM and has received some considerable upgrades in the past few months.

You should use Gemini if...

 width=

1. You want a fast, almost unlimited experience

In my time testing different AI chatbots, I saw  Google Bard catch a lot of flack for different shortcomings . While I'm not going to say they're unjustified, I will say that Google's AI chatbot, now named Gemini, has improved greatly, inside and out.

Also: How to use Gemini (formerly Google Bard): Everything you should know

Gemini is speedy with its answers, which have gotten more accurate over time. It's not faster than ChatGPT Plus, but it can be faster at giving responses than Copilot at times and faster than the free GPT-3.5 version of ChatGPT, though your mileage may vary.

 width=

Gemini answered accurately, like GPT-4 and Copilot's Precise conversation style.

The previous Bard used to make the same mistake as other bots on my example math problem, by incorrectly using the 5 - 3 = 2 formula, but Gemini, powered by Google's new Gemini Pro, the company's largest and latest LLM. Now, Gemini answers the question accurately.

Also: Apple's new AI model edits photos according to text prompts from users

Gemini is also not limited to a set amount of responses like Microsoft Copilot is. You can have long conversations with Google's Gemini, but Bing is limited to 30 replies in one conversation. Even ChatGPT Plus limits users to 40 messages every three hours.

2. You want the full Google experience

 width=

Google also incorporated more visual elements into its Gemini platform than those currently available on Copilot. Users can also use Gemini to generate images, can upload photos through an integration with Google Lens , and enjoy Kayak, OpenTable, Instacart, and Wolfram Alpha plugins.

Also: 6 AI tools to supercharge your work and everyday life

But Gemini is slowly becoming a full Google experience thanks to Extensions folding the wide range of Google applications into Gemini. Gemini users can add extensions for Google Workspace, YouTube, Google Maps, Google Flights, and Google Hotels, giving them a more personalized and extensive experience.

Microsoft Corporation

VIP Account

Firstly, in order to understand why Microsoft Corporation is on the top of the business world, it is necessary to analyze the way of its historical development. It is almost impossible to do without analysis of the life path of its creator, Bill Gates. At the age of 13, Bill became programming computers. At Harvard, he continued his hobby. Together with his friend Steve Ballmer, he wrote a version of programming BASIC. In 1975, Bill left Harvard and together with his friend, Paul Allen, formed Microsoft. Their goal was to develop software for the newly emerged PC market (Gates, 1998, pp. 25-26). Originally, the company was situated in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Nevertheless, when IBM introduced the first PCs in 1980, Microsoft was given a chance to develop an operating system for the computer hardware, and moved to Seattle to perform this task. Gates and Allen made some changes in the operating system, called the Quick and Dirty Operating System. They gave the new name for it – DOS. After making improvements, DOS was licensed to IBM. From that time, Microsoft software became the standard for PCs around the world. However, to deal with competitors, Microsoft Corporation could not stop at this stage of development. That is why, in 1983, Microsoft created Windows operating system, which provided users with such benefits (graphical interface) that were proposed also by the Apple system. This innovation gained success in the society and allowed Microsoft to retain leading position on the PC market. Subsequently, in 1986, the company launched IPO, which provided Microsoft with the necessary money to develop new products, and buy out smaller competitors. In addition, Microsoft Corporation gave away Internet Explorer adjusting to the growing need of the Web. In 1990, Bill Gates introduced Windows 3.0 and provided further competition for Apple software. By the 1990s, the company held a monopoly in the field of operating systems of PCs, as almost 80% of the world’s PCs used its software (Geisst, 2009, p. 179).

microsoft essay writing topics

Nowadays, Microsoft Corporation can be defined as the leading company in the field of software. It is known worldwide for such applications as MS-Office Suite consisting of Word (word processor), Excel (spreadsheet), Power Point (presentations), Outlook (e-mail and news), and Access (database). Nevertheless, it is not only famous because of its software, but also because of hardware as it offers keyboards, mice, and Xbox gaming console. In addition, in 2013, Microsoft started to expand its power in the sphere of mobile technologies. It acquired the handset division of Nokia (Economides, 2003, p. 3).

Secondly, the benefits of Microsoft Corporation cannot be clearly noticed without regarding concrete case studies. The first one is concentrated on the company SunSmart Energy, which is situated in the U.K. It is “a startup company that designs, sells, and installs solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, which convert solar energy into electricity” (Microsoft, 2012). To attract customers and occupy the leading position on the market, the manager of it, Matt Thorington, has chosen the strategy of close contact with customers. Microsoft has helped SunSmart Energy to bring this idea into life. It provides it with Microsoft Dynamics CRM Online, the customer and sales management tools, which can be accessed over the Internet. With this program, SunSmart Energy gains such benefits as cost-effective purchasing model, based on a per month and per user basis, increased profitability through tight control of costs, and direct communication and connection with the customers (Microsoft, 2012). Nevertheless, Microsoft is vital not only for the business environment, but also for social one. The second case study reveals the importance of Microsoft for people with special needs. Ignacia Picas is a student at Colegio San Benito, a primary level school in Santiago. She is blind. However, it does not prevent her from successful studying. Windows accessibility programs, integrated in Microsoft Office application and compatible screen reading software play a very great role in it. They give her the opportunity to perform a full range of different activities in the class and be in the same league with other students (Microsoft, 2012). Despite of all benefits that are clearly defined in these case studies, there are some of them, which point out weak sides of Microsoft Corporation. For example, the Antitrust Division of the Justice Department accused Microsoft of violations of the Sherman Antitrust Act in 1998 (Geisst, 2009, p. 180). The initial trial judge admitted the guilt of Microsoft for monopolization, and ordered the company to break into two parts (Geisst, 2009, p. 180).

According to the historical path of its development and concrete examples of case studies, main benefits of Microsoft Corporation can be defined. The biggest one of them is the adjustment to the needs of the time. It means that managers of Microsoft work constantly on the improvement of software and hardware as well as introduction of new models as it gives the opportunity to follow modern tendencies of life. Another benefit is the diversity of products, which appeal to the needs of big companies and every citizen in particular. It becomes clear from both case studies. In the first example, Microsoft Corporation provides the company with the program that allows its constant connection with customers and tight control of the costs. In the second one, it allows people with special needs to feel comfortable in the society. The third advantage is strong leadership. Bill Gates has not only created a strong initial base for the company, but also adjusted it to the needs of the turbulent times. For example, to overcome the competitor, Apple Corporation, Bill Gates has introduced Internet Explorer, Microsoft Windows, and Windows 3.0. Nevertheless, the drawbacks of Microsoft Corporation should not be underestimated. The biggest of them that it is almost complete monopolist in the sphere of computer software. Therefore, it does not give customers opportunity for choice. In addition, the cost of the production is under the tight control of Microsoft Corporation. Consequently, it means that the government does not have many possibilities to regulate it.

Finally, it becomes clear that the advantages of Microsoft Corporation overcome the disadvantages. According to it, the future of Corporation will be based on them. As the tendency of the near future is predicted to be formulated in such a way – to get more benefits from the combination of ordinary things, the Microsoft will follow this modern tendency. That is why the motto of the future is “to make a pizza to feed a billion of people” (Chen, 2011, p. 81). The goal of the Microsoft is to use its software on every type of computing gadget that exists. Even in 1994, Microsoft started to explore the option of collaborating with cable television companies like Time Warner and TCI in the development of software standards for the delivery of television – based information services (Hamel & Prahalad, 1996). That is why this system of relations will be improved and expanded. It will definitely provide many companies with many benefits. For instance, they will have the opportunity to receive effectiveness from the combination of different resources. From my point of view, it is a good idea to make the clocks with Microsoft Windows software and instant connection to the Internet. Employees will have the opportunity to be controlled on the workplaces and send their offers and requests to the managers immediately.

To sum up, Microsoft Corporation is a large diversified computer software manufacturer with one of the highest evaluations in the world. It has come a long way of development and improvement from the small company, situated in Albuquerque, New Mexico to one of the largest corporations in the world. According to the regarded case studies with SunSmart Energy Company and blind college student, Ignacia Picas, such benefits of Microsoft as the adjustment to the needs of the time, diversity of products, and strong leadership can be defined. Nevertheless, the case about the violations of the Sherman Antitrust Act by Microsoft shows that the biggest disadvantage of this company is monopolization of power. As advantages of the company overcome the drawbacks, the future of it will be based on them. Accordingly, it is possible to predict that Microsoft will expand its power on all possible gadgets, following the modern needs of time.

Microsoft Excel 2019 Experience Essay

Microsoft Excel is suitable for solving various tasks related to storing, processing, and analyzing data sets. The program offers modern tools for creating simple and pivot tables, importing information, performing calculations using complex mathematical formulas, analyzing statistics, and visualizing it in graphs and charts. It also allows you to automate repetitive operations and calculations using VBS scripts. It is possible to create spreadsheets in Excel from templates or from scratch. The program contains many ready-made document templates, including various invoices, reports, journals, expense sheets, and invoices. Users can design the required Excel diagrams themselves and save them in XLTX format. Microsoft Excel has the necessary set of tools for analyzing large amounts of data imported into the application from various external sources: databases, web services, CSV files, and XML.

The program provides data visualization tools in charts of multiple types: line tables, bar graphs, pie, scatter, block, and more complex schemes for in-depth analysis. Microsoft Office Excel provides economic and statistical calculations, graphics tools, and macro programming language Visual Basic for Applications (VBA). Closely integrated with Office Online and Microsoft OneDrive, Excel offers advanced spreadsheet collaboration and real-time data editing. It becomes possible to work with Excel files both on a computer and from a mobile device.

While working with these applications, I learned Excel skills such as conditional formatting, sparklines, autocomplete, analysis pack, and Power Query add-in, and discovered the analytical power of PivotTables and Power Pivot Data Models. Moreover, I learned how to create my own VBA macros, add controls to worksheets, and tried working with Excel events. To gain the necessary skills, I worked with sample workbook files that can be downloaded from the Microsoft website.

Create a form in Word that users can complete or print

In Word, you can create a form that others can fill out and save or print.  To do this, you will start with baseline content in a document, potentially via a form template.  Then you can add content controls for elements such as check boxes, text boxes, date pickers, and drop-down lists. Optionally, these content controls can be linked to database information.  Following are the recommended action steps in sequence.

Show the Developer tab

In Word, be sure you have the Developer tab displayed in the ribbon.  (See how here:  Show the developer tab .)

Open a template or a blank document on which to base the form

You can start with a template or just start from scratch with a blank document.

Start with a form template

Go to File > New .

In the  Search for online templates  field, type  Forms or the kind of form you want. Then press Enter .

In the displayed results, right-click any item, then select  Create.

Start with a blank document

Select Blank document .

Add content to the form

Go to the  Developer  tab Controls section where you can choose controls to add to your document or form. Hover over any icon therein to see what control type it represents. The various control types are described below. You can set properties on a control once it has been inserted.

To delete a content control, right-click it, then select Remove content control  in the pop-up menu.

Note:  You can print a form that was created via content controls. However, the boxes around the content controls will not print.

Insert a text control

The rich text content control enables users to format text (e.g., bold, italic) and type multiple paragraphs. To limit these capabilities, use the plain text content control .

Click or tap where you want to insert the control.

Rich text control button

To learn about setting specific properties on these controls, see Set or change properties for content controls .

Insert a picture control

A picture control is most often used for templates, but you can also add a picture control to a form.

Picture control button

Insert a building block control

Use a building block control  when you want users to choose a specific block of text. These are helpful when you need to add different boilerplate text depending on the document's specific purpose. You can create rich text content controls for each version of the boilerplate text, and then use a building block control as the container for the rich text content controls.

building block gallery control

Select Developer and content controls for the building block.

Introducing Sudo for Windows!

Introducing Sudo for Windows

We’re excited to announce the release of Sudo for Windows in Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26052 ! Sudo for Windows is a new way for users to run elevated commands directly from an unelevated console session. It is an ergonomic and familiar solution for users who want to elevate a command without having to first open a new elevated console.

We are also excited to announce that we are open-sourcing this project here on GitHub! We’re working hard to add more information about the project in the GitHub repo and will be sharing more details about our plans in the coming months! If you’re looking for additional functionality that Sudo for Windows does not provide, check out Gerardo Grignoli’s gsudo which has a number of additional features and configuration options.

You can also check out the Microsoft Learn docs for more information here .

How to enable Sudo for Windows

To enable Sudo for Windows, navigate to the Settings > For Developers page in Windows Settings and toggle on the “Enable Sudo” option:

For Developer Settings

You can alternatively enable Sudo for Windows by running the following command in an elevated console session :

How to configure Sudo for Windows

Sudo for Windows currently supports three different configuration options:

  • In a new window (forceNewWindow)
  • Input closed (disableInput)
  • Inline (normal)

To change the configuration option, use the drop-down menu in the Settings > For Developers page in Windows Settings:

For Developers - Sudo Configurations

You can alternatively change the configuration option by running the following command in an elevated console session:

Configuration Option 1: In a New Window

In this configuration, Sudo for Windows will open a new elevated console window and run the command in that window. This is the default configuration option when sudo is enabled. For example, if you run:

A new window will open and the command will be run in that window:

Configuration Option 2: Input Closed

In this configuration, Sudo for Windows will run the elevated process in the current window, but the new process will be spawned with its stdin closed. This means that the new process will not accept any user input, so this configuration will not work for processes that require further user input after elevation.

Configuration Option 3: Inline

This configuration is most similar to the behavior of sudo on other operating systems. In this configuration, Sudo for Windows will run the elevated process with its stdin, stdout, and stderr all connected to the current window. This means the new elevated process can take in input and route output to the current window.

How does it work?

When elevating a process from the command-line with sudo, a UAC dialog will appear asking the user to confirm the elevation:

UAC Dialog

Once the user confirms the elevation, the process will be elevated based on the configuration option selected by the user.

You can check out the optional parameters for the sudo command by running sudo -h in your console.

In a New Window

In this configuration, sudo.exe will launch a new elevated console window and run the command in that window. The new window will be launched with the same working directory as the current window. The new window will also be launched with the same environment variables as the current window. This configuration has a similar flow to the runas command.

Input Closed and Inline

In these configurations, sudo.exe will launch a new elevated process, an elevated sudo.exe process, and the original unelevated sudo.exe will establish an RPC connection with the new elevated process. In other words, information is passed from the unelevated sudo instance to the elevated one. Specifically, the console handles from the unelevated process are passed to the elevated process which allows the elevated process to read input from the unelevated process and write output to the unelevated process. However, when sudo is configured in the “Input Closed” configuration, the elevated process will essentially not be passed the console’s input handle, so it will not be able to read input from the user.

Here is a diagram of how the process hierarchy looks:

sudo diagram

It is important when running sudo in the “Inline” or “Input Closed” configurations to be aware of the security implications. It is possible that a medium integrity process can drive the elevated process. This risk is mitigated in the “Input Closed” configuration because the elevated process will not be able to read input from the user.

Over the coming months we will be working on expanding documentation for Sudo for Windows and will be sharing more details about the security implications of running sudo in the “Inline” configuration.

What’s next?

Our team is working on open-sourcing Sudo for Windows and we’re excited to share more details about our plans in the coming months. In the meantime, we’d love to hear your feedback! Please share your feedback directly in the GitHub repository.

I love it but new window over inline by default feels like a really bad choice. It’s unfamiliar to users on other platforms, which this is copying. I suggest changing that.

' data-src=

New window is preferable (especially over inline) as a default for security reasons. If a user understands the implications of using inline or input closed then giving them the option to do so is reasonable I suppose, but making them the default is just unnecessary and asking for trouble.

I would have expected an explanation why the engineering effort to create sudo for Windows, when we already have runas for years.

Thanks for the feedback. Check out https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/sudo/#how-is-sudo-for-windows-different-from-the-existing-runas-command in the docs!

' data-src=

Instructions unclear, accidentally deleted /etc/sudoers from Windows.

' data-src=

Does this have logging capabilities yet? Will this eventually have scriptable rules… Ie… This command –> Do it this way for safety… Other command (only this group of users) –> allowed to do this way for convenience… Will there ever be a workaround to use a password, instead of the annoying UAC? Will this eventually have sudo insults?

I may jest a touch on the last one, but Windows Tested by a Company, on a powerful machine; can be a great Linux User experience. I never thought I would feel this way, but I just found out how to enable systemd recently, and windows is finally good if you pay enough. Thanks for all the hard work Dev teams!

You wrote that “When elevating a process from the command-line with sudo, a UAC dialog will appear asking the user to confirm the elevation” and in the window it shows that the run programm is a Microsoft Program. How does this protect from things like “sudo cmd /c myrootkit.exe” (which could be the elevation asked for inside an evil installer)?

Realistically, I don’t think it does at this point. If you click Show more details on the consent dialogue, you’ll see the full command line, but I’m very skeptical that users will consistently do that, especially when the prompt is saying things like “Verified Publisher: Microsoft Corporation”. I don’t think the consent dialogue is really doing its job here and needs a bit more work before this leaves preview.

Actually, for the default New Window configuration, I’m a little curious why they’re not just using ShellExecute and letting the normal elevation process do its thing which would presumably solve the misleading consent dialogue (at least in that case). I imagine it’s because they want to pass on the working directory and environment variables… I’m not sure how I feel about that. The convenience aspect is obvious, I guess, but my understanding is that the AppInfo service specifically avoids doing that for good reasons. Hmm.

EDIT: Nevermind, I started watching the video and it seems like they do actually ShellExecute (or something similar) for the New Window configuration. Apparently they still change the environment variables though? That is curious.

Linux much???

What was wrong with just the basic UAC interaction demanding that a user approve elevated privileges with a local admin password?

I fear that you have taken a step in the direction towards unnecessarily complicating such a simple concept as command line “sudo” with the perception that you have somehow made the life of admins and developers “easier” while still being secure.

At least, take the sensible route and eliminate the UAC interaction in favor of something like mandatory membership in a designated security group before allowing a user to just invoke “sudo” as a CLI command without ALL of the silly back and forth between different windows and the like.

If you want to be like Linux, then be like Linux.

And make sure you enable detailed logging of the the full command line and arguments when a user invokes your version of “sudo”.

' data-src=

We have that, it’s called the Administrators group. Auto-allowing someone to do something because they are a member of some group is a security hole and easily hacked. That’s the whole point of UAC. If you allow unrestrained access by users in certain groups then you have not yet been a victim of an inside hack. You are fortunate.

Honestly I think this entire tool is a useless security risk. If you cannot run an elevated terminal, or know how to do it using runas, then maybe you shouldn’t have that kind of access. Making it easier to run as admin makes it easier to hack your system. I would never install this tool and I would go so far as to say we would have a company block on any team member installing it.

Can you share your console setup?! 🙂 I love the colors and the basketball “prompt” !!! 🙂 how did you pull that off!?

Absolutely! I actually have covered the setup in various depths and forms so I’ll start there, but feel free to reach out if you have any issues or any more questions.

Copying my comment on the YouTube video:

The Windows and *nix sudo commands are different enough that they should have different names. Copying the name didn’t work out so well when “curl” was made an alias for “Invoke-WebRequest”. I also don’t see many people complaining about e.g. ifconfig vs ipconfig.

If sudo on Windows supports the exact same same syntax, flags, options, etc as sudo on *nix, I could see the case for keeping the names the same since the user-facing functionality would be very similar. But even then, just the UAC prompt alone makes it different enough that I’d call it something else. My natural inclination is that two tools with the same name should do the same thing, and this is not true of sudo on Windows.

All that being said, I LOVE this idea of making something better than “runas”. Good job!

I hear you! We thought about some of the options you’re calling out here. A lot of customers voiced having the muscle memory of doing similar flows on various operating systems was more important to them and that’s where we landed. I totally understand your perspective and I do really appreciate the feedback. I’m always trying to learn from people like you so I can help to build things that will make your life better.

' data-src=

Muscle memory? Please rename cmd.exe into bash in one of the next Windows updates then. And I think that renaming notepad.exe into nano is also a good idea following your excellent logic.

And in the end just rename Windows into WinBSD.

' data-src=

While at it, can you (you as in Microsoft) rename “Run as Administrator” to something that reflects what it really does?

It’s a bad idea to name the new command “sudo”. Does it share code with the original sudo utility? If not then call it something else.

' data-src=

I can see only one possible application for sudo in Windows: sudo rm -rf c:\windows or even better from a liveDVD with any distro:

wipefs -a /dev/sdxY where windows is installed.

I am really curious to see how that works in an enterprise environment where no-one is in a administrator group and a network operators groups is used to elevate privileges to plus level but never above that. Will be interesting.
