Descriptive Essay on My father
This article is about how a perfect father looks to us and his role in our life.
People may say that a perfect father does not exist; in fact, I do not know if that is true, but what I do know for a fact is that an excellent father to me: Everything in my father is special; the way they dress, the way they move, the way they behave, the way they talk, etc. Sometimes, it would be great to be a small percentage of it. But first, let’s talk about what dad looks like.
At first, you could see that his clothes were neat and orderly; However, if you know him as well as I know him, you may realize that he wears all kinds of clothes; strong, dark, clear, cheap, expensive, soft, organized, unorganized, playful. All of her clothes are different, and I love them, but to be honest, there is a jacket I don’t like at all, it is heavy, forehead and in my opinion a little oldie. His clothes fit well with the way he looked. My father was tall and thin; he always cut his hair and grey. In other words, my dad’s appearance is simply unique.
If I look at her, I would say that the way she acts and moves is an important part of her personality. For example, the most depressing thing is that he often walks very fast; this may be why he is so thin, he walks so much everywhere, and I often believe he does not walk; he runs! Taking the way he eats, he has some way of twisting his tortilla and making some lump and then chewing it without noise; he loves to eat, and every time I eat with him, I wish I could enjoy the food as he does. When he eats, he does not speak; however, when he says it is another matter. When he speaks, it is easier to notice how he speaks because he is always rude; when he has doubts, he always smiles when he is happy, and he always stays honest when he is worried. His words make it even more interesting to listen to him.
He is the kind of person who is interesting to listen to. I would say that I would learn something if I heard him. Whenever I want to be honest, I always go with my dad because he gives me his opinion from the bottom of his heart. On the other hand, when he needs to tell me something, he waits for the right moment to say to me, somewhere quiet and comfortable. And if it is a bad thing, he always tries to give me advice; when he gives me advice, it is important to me because I feel the support that everyone needs; when my father supports me, I feel confident and safe.
The father is the kind of person who does not show much emotion. But I would say he can; however, when she and I are not like that, she may not kiss and jug me every day, but when she does, it becomes what I think is the most sincere action that a person can do ask for. When e kisses them, I feel warm and loved, her firm skin becomes soft. In conclusion, some people may think this article is a little cheesy, and it probably is, but I do not care because there was no one else I wanted to describe. I have a great opportunity to have this amazing dad.

Quick start now, how to write a descriptive essay about your father.
Perhaps the hardest thing is to summarize a person that means a lot to you in just a few pages of writing. What to choose and how to begin? It requires a great skill to convey a whole range of feelings and paint a vivid, truthful picture just by the means of words. Here are a few pieces of advice you could follow as an example of a descriptive essay about your father.
Unless you take a paragraph to describe what your dad looks like, the readers will imagine their own dad, or someone who has the same name as you father. In a descriptive essay, all expressive devices are fair, so try to make your description as colorful as possible. Use imaginative ways.
Compare these two examples:
- My father has light blue eyes. He is tall. He has a beard and likes smoking the pipe;
- To a stranger, my father may resemble a wizard from a long-forgotten tale: his beard is thick and probably holds magical powers, with his habit of smoking the pipe adding to the picture. His light blue eyes always shine with delight whenever he tells a story we find particularly enchanting. When he enters a room, my dad sometimes bumps his forehead against the frame of the door: that is how tall he is.
Of course, the description of a person is hollow without personality. Just like in the case of appearance, do not concentrate on enlisting facts, but focus on showing with examples what kind of person your dad is. Take a sheet of paper and divide it into two columns: positive and negative.
The first column may include honesty, responsibility, adaptability, patience, loyalty, intelligence, sense of humor, self-confidence, creativity. In the second, you could write down the following: laziness, arrogance, impulsiveness, carelessness. What is true about your dad? Some of the personality traits can be neither negative nor positive, like extroversion and introversion.
Compare these examples:
- My father has always been an honest person;
- Ever since his childhood, my father learned that telling the truth was the right thing to do. In fact, once he ate all the cookies from a jar, and his mother suspected the cat, but my father rushed to confess his misdeeds, even though the cat could not have snitched on him.
What They Mean To You
When you are finished with describing your dad’s appearance and personality, focus on your relationship with him. Bring out your arsenal of memories. You can even look for the photos of you together, or ask other relatives to see if they remember some funny stories. Think about your own life.
What it would have been like if you had another type of dad, or no father at all? Contrary to a general opinion, your descriptive essay can be filled not only with positivity. The important thing is to write from the heart.
Writing A Descriptive Essay
In case writing about your own father is a piece of cake for but the toughest thing is to make it look like a really essay and not a monologue, let us guide you in this sphere and assist you in your writing process as well.
The objective of a descriptive essay is to be defined as a collaboration of imagination, vivid experience and creative writing skills of an author. Everything you perceive in the object of your investigation should be called a description, it usually involves both outer and inner sides.
Therefore, your observing skills matter here the most. In case of an essay about your dad, it is very easy to observe his everyday lifestyle, to add it later.
The best thing about a descriptive essay is that you are not restricted by the language formats at all, so a flow of spoken word can be written here as well in order to make your paper more sentimental and alive in all meanings of this word.
You are free to use all your senses to tell about your father like:
- Sights – tell the readers about his appearance and do not be afraid to fantasize a bit;
- Touch – you may describe the roughness of his hands and warmth of his hugs;
- Taste – tell the world what a great chef in cooking your father is and how he baked the best birthday cake in your life;
- Sounds – what does his voice sound like for you? Do you have any associations with it? Describe them here;
- Smells – His favorite cologne water may have some associations as well for you, if you have any strong memories about that just state them to have your essay truly descriptive.
Anything else to add? A framework of course! In order to have all your thoughts and idea at the right place, write a short draft on the primary components like:
- Introduction. Here you determine the topic of your paper and are more precise about what is to be mentioned here as well.
- Body part. The part with your list of senses, memories. Important observations. This part is the biggest and thus must be enlightened at its best.
- Conclusion. Ending part of the final thoughts, an effect of Déjà vu with a bit more flattering of your father however, here you are summing everything up so be more laconic and condense the main points to review.
Read it out loud so figure out what should be omitted and which detail should be obligately inserted. After this revise the text a few times after some period of time or give it us for a revision as we will be glad be in an assistance for you. Make it readable, pay attention to the appearance of an essay, write a good title and bold it, set a good font, size it up to make it more alluring, separate paragraphs when needed, attach a photo of your dad or refrain from this option in order to keep a secret.
Do not be afraid to tell the class what you feel towards your dad. No feeling can be judged, neither have doubts showing his flows – nobody is perfect. Just describe him as you see him and it will be definitely appreciated.

List of essays on my father, essay on my father – my role model and my friend (essay 1 – 500 words), essay on my father – for kids and children (essay 2 – 750 words), essay on my father – long essay for school students (essay 3 – 800 words).
Audience: The below given essays are exclusively written for school students (Class 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 Standard).
My father is my hero and guide in my life. He is the one I look upon whenever I find myself in trouble. My father has been my guiding force for all my major decisions in life. In fact, I have never regretted adhering to his advice as it has always worked for me. He is a hardworking and passionate person. My father has a love for movies. Whenever he gets time, he just loves to watch an old movie. In fact, at times we just fight as to who gets control of the television. But at heart, we love to tease each other and play as well.
My father does not like to sit idle. At times, on holidays if he finds me and my sister doing nothing and just idling our time, he gives us some task or the other. He is also much organised and keeps all his documents in a properly organised manner.
My Father – My Role Model:
My father is my role model for many reasons. First and foremost I admire his passion for work. That is why he is so respected in his office as well. He is always there to help his colleagues even if it is not his work. In fact, one can always see him spending weekends helping others out. Moreover, my father is a simple man. He does not like expensive things and lives an easy and peaceful life. Also, he never shouts on anyone of us. I wonder if he ever gets angry on anything as he takes everything so calmly and takes his time to decide upon things.
My Father – My Friend:
My father is my friend as well. I can discuss everything with my father, even those that I dare not speak in front of my mother. I know that he shall keep it a secret and give the advice I need. He is the one whom I can rely upon blindly during any hour of need, and I know that he shall be there for me.
Importance of My Father in My Life:
My father plays an important role in the family. He is in fact considered as the head of the family. However, I feel that both father and mother have a distinctive role to play in bringing up their children. While on hand my mother has s soft heart, it is my father who shows courage and strength which his children will later on imbibe as their qualities. He can be firm at times, but be rest assured it is always for the benefit of the children.
There is no doubt that my father’s role is vital in my life. His presence is vital for maintaining the balance and peace in my family. A father is the one who earns the badge of the stricter parent and whose denial of permission for anything means a lot to the children. I also admire my father and try to imbibe his qualities so that I become like him when I grow up.
My father is a person who takes care of my family and loves each one of us dearly. My father acts as the pillar of support and strength for my family.
My father is the person that I admire the most in my life. I can never forget all the childhood memories that I have with him. It is safe for me to say that my father is largely the reason behind my present joy and happiness. I can say that I am the person who I am today and the person that I am growing to be, is all because of the influence he has had and is having on me. He always makes time to play with me and catch up on all the happenings in my life even after the hard work of the day.
My father is one man who is very unique and different. I always feel lucky anytime I remember that he is my father knowing how he has done the very best for me in life. I always feel grateful that I have the opportunity to be his son and be a part of a wonderful family that has a great father like him. My father has shown himself to be a very peaceful and polite person. He seldom scolds me and he is always easy with me. What he tries to do is that he makes sure that I realise the mistake that I have made in a very polite way and helps me to get better and this has been working like magic for many years now.
My father is the leader and head of our family. He is always there for every member of the family to help us in times when we need his advice and direction in taking decisions. Anytime we have a problem, we take it to him, he tries to help us by sharing some of the problems that he also faced in the past that are quite similar to our problem and how he was able to overcome them. He also shares all of his achievements and drawbacks in life and tells us to learn from them.
My father has his personal online marketing business but he never insists any of his children to pursue a career in that same field so that we can take over after him. He does not even try to attract any of us to his business but he tries to teach how we can discover our own passion and fields of interest in life. He does his best to encourage us in the pursuance of our various dreams. I can boldly say that my dad is a very good dad and this is not as a result of him always helping me and being nice to me but because he shows great strength, knowledge, a good helping and nice nature. He also owns very good human relations skills.
My father’s parents were very poor when he was growing up but with hard work and patience, my father was able to become very rich. He uses this as an example to encourage me to always work hard.
I share all of my happy, sad and bad moments with him and he also does the same. He is always around to share with me all of his life experiences and how I can learn from them. My father also tells me all about his day and every event that occurred during the day. He is doing all his best to ensure that I grow up to become a very successful person that has good character and behaviour.
My father always teaches me ethics, humanity and etiquettes of life that can help me in future. My father is always ready and willing to help the people who are needy around us and he tells us that giving is the most important thing in life. My father also teaches my siblings and me how to be happy, healthy and fit throughout our lives.
My father has shown himself to be very good to all the members of my extended family. If anyone of us is facing a particular problem, my father is usually the first person we go to for advice and help. My father has over the years proven to be a person who has a very kind heart and I can boldly say that he is my best friend and my hero.
About My Father:
Appa was born in Coimbatore, the second son and third child in a family of 11 children. His father, my grandfather was a stern man, a respected civil engineer who worked for the colonial British government.
Appa attended the Rishi Valley School in Yercaud, founded on the learning philosophy of Jiddu Krishnamurthy. There he learned the value of discipline, respect for hard work, honesty, responsibility and constant learning. He studied electrical engineering at Banaras Hindu University and went on to join Voltas Limited’s air conditioning division. He worked there the rest of his life, and was regarded as brilliant and a genius.
My childhood memories of him are as a stern, strict and not very communicative man. He’d crack the most unhumorous Dad jokes and we’d all grimace and laugh dutifully.
He felt a deep and abiding sense of responsibility towards his own family of birth as well as his marital family. The modest salary he always earned would be divided between these two families, and since he was terrible at currying favour or promoting himself, he never rose within the ranks of Voltas and his income remained quite pathetic till he died. This officially made us a lower-middle class family and our childhoods were frugal, thrifty and austere. A little money meant a lot.
Despite these constraints, Appa planned our futures successfully. When his provident funds were released after his retirement, he used the entire amount, augmented by a bank loan, to buy a house in his two sons’ names. For the rest of our lives, we had a roof over our heads.
Why I like my father:
One of the most remarkable things about Appa was the number of things he was interested in. In Calcutta, he would spend hours outside a tailor’s shop watching him make clothes. After several months, he bought himself a Singer sewing machine. From then, all our clothes, including winter school uniforms, were stitched by him.
He taught himself carpentry — and constructed the sofa sets we used for decades.
He learned dry cleaning — and from then, we would go to school smelling of kerosene in winter.
He was an outstanding cook, and loved cooking. When my mother was immobilized with lymphatic TB, he’d cook breakfast, lunch and dinner for the family in the morning before leaving for work.
Best of all, he was a brilliant musician, gifted in playing the vichitra veena. He had his own Carnatic ‘band’ with a flutist and a mridangam player.
Things I Learned from My Father:
I have slowly realised how much of who I am was shaped by who he was. Like him, I never get bored, and remain fascinated by everything in life. I’m constantly active doing something constructive or educational. I am today two years younger than he was when he died but have started learning to play piano, understand search engine optimisation, UX design and painting.
I learned from him that generosity is a state of mind, not a state of wallet. The number of nameless, faceless poor people he had helped was long, as we learned only after he died. Never demeaning his beneficiaries with a handout, he invited them to repay at their time and speed, but made sure that they did, thus restoring their self-respect.
Without ever speaking about it, he has shown me what it means to be a father, and the meaning of selfless living.
A single incident sums up my relationship with my dad. He wanted me to join the IIT and become an engineer. I wanted to be a writer, a profession he disdained as having no future. Headstrong, in 1969, I stepped out of the train in which my family was relocating from Delhi to Bombay just as the whistle blew. I was bent on living my life my way.
My father, deeply upset, cut me off without a paisa, saying I could jolly well support myself if I was so confident about writing. And so I did, earning enough through writing for the evening papers to pay my rent, college fees and food. Six months later, my father, passing through Delhi in December, visited me to check how his strong-headed son was doing, and saw for himself that I was surviving well enough without borrowing or begging. He visibly swelled with pride.
He hugged me, in one action forgiving me but also forgiving himself. He used the 400 rupees he had received as a Christmas bonus to buy me utensils, a mattress, and other basics.
From that day, he would proudly say, “My son followed his heart rather than my head — and see what a fine job he has done.”

My Grandpa Redeemed Cans for Money. He Deserved a Raise.
By Andrew Li
Mr. Li is a senior at Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan.
When I was in the fifth grade, my grandpa took me to my school’s dumpster. “You know the Coca-Cola and water bottles that people throw out?” he asked me in Mandarin. I nodded, spotting two empty Poland Spring bottles lying on top of a nearby garbage pile. He swiftly plucked them out and stowed them away in a plastic bag. “That’s 10 cents. Your turn,” he said, smiling as I ran to another trash can. Seconds later, I emerged victorious, holding a Pepsi can over my head as if it were a trophy.
My grandpa was a canner, someone who collects recyclable containers on the street and redeems them for money. In New York State, canning is possible because of the Returnable Container Act , passed in 1982, which calls for a 5-cent deposit on glass, metal and plastic beverage containers. Though the law was meant to reduce litter and encourage recycling, it has also had the effect of offering a lifeline to some New Yorkers. A new bill that is pending in the State Legislature offers a chance for us to significantly improve the welfare of canners like my grandpa.
There are an estimated 4,000 to 8,000 canners in New York City. Many of them turn to canning because they are unable to earn a steady income for a variety of reasons — because they are homeless, unemployed or recent immigrants, as my grandpa was.
It’s easy to see canning as sad and degrading. When I was in the fifth grade, I remember the looks of disgust and bewilderment on my classmates’ faces when I told them that picking through the trash was actually quite profitable. I quickly learned not to offer this observation. Nonetheless, I was raised to respect family members, especially my elders, so I was never embarrassed that my grandpa was a canner.
On the streets of New York, though, my grandpa endured scathing looks. And some of his family members looked down on him for doing work they saw as dirty and indecent.
But there’s a difference between being desperate and being pitiable. Though it’s no one’s first choice as a profession, canning offered my grandpa a chance to build a life and a family. He always took pride in his work.
When my grandparents left China for the United States, not knowing English barred them from most work, and they had to rely on what little money they could earn through odd jobs or, eventually, canning. Some people collect cans to supplement their savings and support their family members. My grandpa remembers spending hours every day picking up bottles just to earn enough money so that his family could sleep with full stomachs.
His top priority was making sure that my dad could attend college without taking out loans — a feat he was able to accomplish. Even after landing a construction job, my grandpa continued to can for 30 years, until the start of the pandemic, as a way of helping to pay the bills.
Since the Returnable Container Act was passed four decades ago, the benefits of canning have been dwindling. Five cents today is worth only a third as much as it was in 1982. To earn just $5, barely enough to afford a meal, you have to collect 100 containers. That’s 100 instances of finding and collecting, not to mention carrying everything you’ve gathered to a redemption center. Many stores also impose limits on the number and types of containers that can be redeemed, requiring canners to travel to more than one place to unload their haul.
The new bill would double the bottle deposit to 10 cents from 5 cents, as well as expand the kinds of containers that are redeemable. For many canners, a greater return would mean less time on the streets and more time to devote to education, family and working toward a more stable income.
Canning is no easy task, as my grandpa regularly pointed out. He frequently brought me along to help him carry and redeem the containers we collected. As a teenager, I had little trouble walking the half-mile route, picking out recyclables, but since my grandpa was in his 70s, he would have to stop and rest regularly. “You’re lucky,” he would tell me. “When you get to my age, everything is 10 times harder.”
Increasing the deposit on containers would also most likely be a boon to recycling. In 2020, New York recycled 5.5 billion containers , with redemption rates of 64 percent . Some of this is thanks to the long hours that canners spend picking up after other people, and in 2022, the rate reached 70 percen t. Still, this percentage can be improved, as demonstrated by Michigan’s 76 percent redemption rate and Oregon’s 86 percent , both of which offer 10 cents for containers. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the states with the highest redemption rates tend to have the highest deposits.
The benefits of doubling the bottle deposit are clear. It’s time to give canners the respect they deserve.
