10 Great Essay Writing Tips

Knowing how to write a college essay is a useful skill for anyone who plans to go to college. Most colleges and universities ask you to submit a writing sample with your application. As a student, you’ll also write essays in your courses. Impress your professors with your knowledge and skill by using these great essay writing tips.

Most college essays ask you to answer a question or synthesize information you learned in class. Review notes you have from lectures, read the recommended texts and make sure you understand the topic. You should refer to these sources in your essay.

Plan Your Essay

Many students see planning as a waste of time, but it actually saves you time. Take a few minutes to think about the topic and what you want to say about it. You can write an outline, draw a chart or use a graphic organizer to arrange your ideas. This gives you a chance to spot problems in your ideas before you spend time writing out the paragraphs.

Choose a Writing Method That Feels Comfortable

You might have to type your essay before turning it in, but that doesn’t mean you have to write it that way. Some people find it easy to write out their ideas by hand. Others prefer typing in a word processor where they can erase and rewrite as needed. Find the one that works best for you and stick with it.

View It as a Conversation

Writing is a form of communication, so think of your essay as a conversation between you and the reader. Think about your response to the source material and the topic. Decide what you want to tell the reader about the topic. Then, stay focused on your response as you write.

Provide the Context in the Introduction

If you look at an example of an essay introduction, you’ll see that the best essays give the reader a context. Think of how you introduce two people to each other. You share the details you think they will find most interesting. Do this in your essay by stating what it’s about and then telling readers what the issue is.

Explain What Needs to be Explained

Sometimes you have to explain concepts or define words to help the reader understand your viewpoint. You also have to explain the reasoning behind your ideas. For example, it’s not enough to write that your greatest achievement is running an ultra marathon. You might need to define ultra marathon and explain why finishing the race is such an accomplishment.

Answer All the Questions

After you finish writing the first draft of your essay, make sure you’ve answered all the questions you were supposed to answer. For example, essays in compare and contrast format should show the similarities and differences between ideas, objects or events. If you’re writing about a significant achievement, describe what you did and how it affected you.

Stay Focused as You Write

Writing requires concentration. Find a place where you have few distractions and give yourself time to write without interruptions. Don’t wait until the night before the essay is due to start working on it.

Read the Essay Aloud to Proofread

When you finish writing your essay, read it aloud. You can do this by yourself or ask someone to listen to you read it. You’ll notice places where the ideas don’t make sense, and your listener can give you feedback about your ideas.

Avoid Filling the Page with Words

A great essay does more than follow an essay layout. It has something to say. Sometimes students panic and write everything they know about a topic or summarize everything in the source material. Your job as a writer is to show why this information is important.

In conjunction with Teacher’s day, I as the head prefect of our school have been asked to give a speech.

On 16th May, Teacher’s Day is celebrated by all of us and across the world. The main purpose of Teacher’s Day celebration is for us to value and treasure their spirited dedication and untiring service. Time and energy may have been sacrificed by the teachers to bring up and give the best outcomes to the pupils. A very motherly look have been used by them to look after us like their own children. In preparation for our examinations, they also have imparted and convey on the students a great deal of knowledge and skills. Teachers are also a good counsellors which means they are good listeners and the one who will advise and correct us if we do wronged. Many students have turned over a new leaf and go down the right path. These are all caused by the teacher’s concern towards their students.

Today, we have lined up a few programmes and activities, as an appreciation for our beloved and dedicated teachers. First and foremost, teachers are invited to attend a concert. In the concert there will be many performances. A chorus and magic show also would be there. In addition,teachers will also participate in games that have been organised. Teachers and students are been prepared to have few games together. Before we leave, the teachers would be prepared with a special lunch and will be served by our school canteen.

Today is the big day that we can show our big and deep appreciation to our teachers. So, I would like to take this chance and golden opportunity to express my gratitude and to thank our beloved teachers. Last but not least, the importance of appreciating our respected teachers should be emphasized. PT3 (Form Three Assessment) is an assessment of students' academic achievement at the lower secondary education level from Form 1 to Form 3. There are several examinations to be done by PT3 candidates including specialized work, oral speaking test, listening test and written test.

Writing can improve the learning abilities of students. This is necessary in schools and colleges. Students should not feel burdened at writing work and must feel that this is so ‘kacang’ or easy to do. It can be done with little pain; maybe a little.

“No hustle, No gain”

Rule of Thumb to Learn and Master PT3 Writing Paper

The first rule of thumb is to understand communicative language teaching (CLT) approach. This can be applied by both teachers and parents. How to do this?

Learning through English communication – to allow students to have a natural conversation and involved in real communication. Through time, students won’t have any trouble expressing themselves in English.

Communication is more prominent compared to linguistic rules – Everything is good as long as the student is able to create a conversation even though they are using broken English.

The second rule of thumb is to know that it's okay to make a few mistakes. The journey to gain knowledge may not be a straight road and might be a bit bumpy. Therefore, making a little slip can be acceptable as long as the students are able to convey the message through communication.

Just remember to write and converse in ‘Natural English’ .

Comparison on PT3 Writing Papers Format

Starting from 2019, a new form of assessment format was announced by  The Examination Board of the Ministry of Education Malaysia  for form 3 KSSM English. There was quite a few changes going on and it also brings to attention on how the writing paper will differ from the previous years.

I have listed the similarities and the differences between the older writing format and the newer one in terms of the questions and also the marking below.

How to Answer PT3 Writing Paper Part 1

Look at the following email and write a reply to Alia giving some advice, in about 80 words.

So, how should you answer?

The first question in part 1 is to write a short message or reply to an e-mail or of the same sort. As a teacher myself, we usually taught students to always bid greetings. Well, it is in our Malaysian cultures too, right?

However, in the latest format, you can just SKIP THE GREETINGS; write it straight to the point! Let’s go back to the previous section where I told you to use English as naturally as possible.

Just imagining you are directly replying to her in the real world or in person. Just start responding by explaining why she should do this and not doing the other or you can also suggest a new idea. End your message with a sweet ending. Remember to keep your reply short but compact.

For example,

Hi, I think you should spend your time traveling with your family during the school holiday. This is the time for you to rest your mind and body as you cannot be stressed out before sitting on your examination. Plus, you can always study while traveling too. You have online tutors, right? So, there should not be any problem for you to kill two birds with one stone. I know how much you would like to excel in your studies. Hope this helps.

Easy and simple right? You do not need to write any greetings anymore. Even the mark weightage for this simple 80 words short sentences is 20 marks!

Some students asked me, do you need to use bombastic words, any jargon or idioms? Yes, you can my dear. But you do not need to use it throughout your essay.

Remember, keep your writing as simple as possible and use natural words. Besides, you can reduce your mistakes too.

How to Answer PT3 Writing Paper Part 2

For the second part of the writing paper, you’ll need to write a 120 words essay on any general topics. We can say that part two are almost similar to guided writing.

Look at the sample questions.

In a tennis club, you have been talking about the next inter-school tournament.

In about 120 words, write an essay about the preparations needed for the tournament.

You may use the notes below to help you.

When is the tournament?

• Where is the venue?
• Who can be the club representative?
• Why should the tennis club participate?
• How to register for the tournament?
• What is the other preparation needed?

Write your essay

This part is easier compared to the previous part in this section. Here, the topic is general and there is no format needed. All the points are straight forward too. Therefore, remember to keep things simple.

There are 6 notes given to help you construct your essay. Use it! For each bullet, try to write at least 3 short sentences. Just about 7 words.

7 words x 3 sentences x 6 bullets = 122 words!

Cool right?

Let me show you how 7 words x 3 sentences can be constructed from the notes given above.

The Inter-school Tennis Tournament will be held on May 16, 2021. This is in conjunction with the Teacher's Day Celebration. Every player is expected to arrive at 8 am.

You can see from the sample answer that each note needs to have at least 3 sentences to make up 1 paragraph. You only need to write about 120 words for each essay.

PT3 Essay Writing Tips

There are several rules to remember when answering your essay questions.

Write your PT3 Essay accordingly to the questions.

DO NOT OVERWRITE your essay. You should minimize the words you use in each sentence. Remember the more sentences you write, the higher the chances of mistakes. Simple is better so you can reduce the chances of losing more marks.

Write your PT3 Essay with an easy and understandable answer

You need to make sure what you write can be understood by the examiner. With this said, you need to be extra careful in your sentence construction. Pay attention to your grammar, especially the tenses. Make sure it is consistent.

Write your PT3 Essay with a neat Handwriting

This is by most, a crucial part in writing an essay. Examiners will be pleased if you have a neat handwriting. It is okay if your handwriting is bad but make sure it is neat. Do not let your answer sheet look like scraps paper!  This is very important, not only for the examiner, but also for yourself to easily spot your spelling mistakes.

Write your PT3 Essay naturally and straightforward

For the latest PT3 format, you just need to answer as natural as possible. This means, you should use simple words to construct your sentences. Your answer should be straight forward. You don't need to beat around the bush with flowery wordings and sentences like the previous format.

You can use jargon or complicated words but not too much. This is to minimize the risk of misperception from the marker and the chances that you use it wrongly is very high too.

This is a bit tricky because it all depends on your school teacher. My advice is ask your teacher what to do and listen to her. MOE has given the guide lines but it's still up to the respective school teachers to allow the number of words for students to write because at the end of the day it is they who are going to mark the papers.... As for my students I ask them to write 250 words.

Reading is one way you could increase your vocab base.For example, read the local STAR newspaper. Look for news about crimes, road accidents, flood etc and jot down the terms used for describing the incidents. You can a scrap book to write down the vocabs...later, go through them and try to use them in your writing... Dear student, let me be firm here....I do not believe in giving fish to my students-no matter how hard they ask for it- I believe in giving them the fishing rod. I wrote 403 words for my PT3 Essay trials today. The word limit is the same and 4 points were given but they required us to give two more points of our own aswell. I'm wondering if any marks would be deducted? If so, how many and will it effect my grade a lot?

You have written a very long essay - I am sure your teacher will penalize you because the required words are roughly 180 - depending on your teacher's discretion it can be 200-250 words. Anything more than that is way too long....but, it all depends on your teacher.

On the opposite direction of road,there was a motorcycle coming furiously.Their faces were covered with helmets.I did not give much thought about them as I was going to late to my school.Out of blue,the motorcyclist zoomed past her and the pillion rider snatched Mrs. Tan's handbag.She had butterflies in her stomach when she felt a strong tug on his handbag.She tried to get back her handbag.He held her handbag strongly.Mrs. Tan screamed at the top of her voice for seeking help.The pillion rider kicked her in cold storage and they successfully snatched her handbag. My suggestion :- Intro - 20 words Point 1 - 35 words Point 2 - 35 words Point 3 - 35 words Conclusion - 25 words Total words of 150. Now, this is just a simple format which you can try and use. Ask your teacher how many words (max)she would allow you to write and then do your own arrangement...ALL THE BEST!

Dear Anonymous, one the most common reasons why students find it hard to express their thoughts is due to lack of reading articles or books or anything which had got to do with English. Reading materials written in English will help them to write better essays.Plus reading also will increase one's vocabulary list and sharpen their style of writing.

Hello. May I know how will you guide your students to write during PT3? According to the KSSM format, you can only write LESS THAN 150 WORDS. During the real PT3 exam, are we allowed to write more than that? According to my teacher, I shouldn't. Moreover, my teacher has 100% not taught me the technique for the 150 words essay. As students, it is extremely complicated to write less than 150 words. I need some explanation. SO, FOR THE PT3 2019 AND SO ON, ARE WE ALLOWED TO WRITE MORE THAN 150? TQ.

Well, personally, it is difficult to write a 120 words essay if you are good but if you are not then it is not a problem.Yes, in the previous PT3 exams, students were allowed to write more than 150 words but in the new 2019 PT3 format, students are advised to write about 80 words for PART1 and about 120 words in PART 2. The reason is to train students to write within the limited word scope and not to drag too much on unnecessary explanations.

No, you are not allowed to write in one paragraph. If you find it hard to write 5 paragraph, you can try a 3 paragraph essay that is INTRO(1)-BODY(1)-CONCLUSION(1). Start with an INTRO (first paragraph). Cram all your points in BODY (second paragraph-one paragraph) and close it with a CONCLUSION (third paragraph - one paragraph). Keep it all in the limit of 120 words if you can.

Hi WawaZzz, very interesting comment. Writing a conclusion for English essay is a bit tricky because it depends on the type of question and essay format. If, the format is a letter then you can use the type of conclusion I have given in my sample letter essays on this blog but if it is a different format then you have to write a proper conclusion for it. There is no so called right or wrong conclusion for the English essay.
