The Importance of Friendship

Friendships are a crucial part of living a fulfilling life..

  • Friendship makes life more enjoyable and enriches one's everyday experiences.
  • Finding friends can be challenging but can be often achieved by approaching others with mutual interests.
  • The first criteria one should look for in a partner is someone who is ultimately a good friend to them.

As we move through life, we find that there are many things out of our control. We can’t choose our parents, our genetics , or control the things that happen in the world around us. One thing that we can control is who our friends are, and this decision can either make our lives so much richer and beautiful, or more stressful and disappointing. Today we’ll focus on how to choose friends who enrich our lives and make them more beautiful.

Why friends are so important

Having solid friendships is important for two main reasons. First, they make life more enjoyable. We get to share the beautiful aspects of life with people who we love, which can enrich our everyday experiences. Second, our friends help us through the difficult times. Having friends to support us through hard times can make unimaginably difficult situations seem more tolerable.

The most beautiful part about pouring our time and energy into friendships is that not only do friends help enrich our lives, but we enrich theirs too! Friendships get us through the tough times in life, make things more fun and enjoyable, and all-around make our lives better. I urge you to take stock of your friendships and ask yourself if your current friends people build you up and support you, or is the friendship more one-sided?

As we explore friendships today, these are also inclusive of our partners. I believe that the foundation for any healthy relationship is friendship. So it’s important to group our romantic partners into this conversation too.

So, where do we find friends? This might sound silly, but finding friends can be challenging! When I first moved to California for my Ph.D., I didn’t have any friends out here. There were quite a few people in my program that I enjoyed spending time with. But, towards the end of school, they became very busy and were no longer able to dedicate time to hang out anymore. Thankfully, through the help of a very good therapist, I learned that it was important to enjoy life instead of striving for excellence all of the time. As a result, I learned how important it was to carve out time in my life for friends.

Unfortunately, the people I had dedicated time to thus far were achievement-oriented and were pouring their time into work and not our friendships. This forced me to seek out other ways to form connections with people. I ended up finding a local hiking group with the hopes of meeting people with similar interests. During one of these hikes, I met Jim, one of my best friends to this day.

We became instant friends. We have continued to support each other over the years, and even more importantly, we always make time for one another. We both view the friendship as one that makes each other’s lives better, therefore it’s always worth the time and energy. The backbone of any successful friendship is one where both sides put in equal effort and support.

Both Jim and I were forced to put in more effort when he moved across the country to the East Coast. Because we already had such a strong foundation, this didn’t impact our friendship. We talk all of the time and see each other several times a year. We make the relationship a priority no matter what coast each other is on. Like anything in life that is valuable to us, we must work at it and put time and effort into it.

When it's time to move on from a friendship

The second part of the friendship discussion can be a difficult one — reassessing your current friendships and potentially moving on from friends who don’t add value to your life.

Two of my best friends from high school went down different paths from me. We still keep in contact, but I don’t spend too much time with them anymore. The supporting, loving part of our relationship wasn’t there anymore, so it was no longer worth putting energy into maintaining a friendship that had changed so much.

This may be a story you can relate to. What I hope you take away from this post is this — friendships take energy, time, and commitment. And if you’re putting your time and energy into someone who isn’t enriching your life and giving you the support you need, it may be time to reevaluate that friendship.

essay on friend best

If you find yourself in the market for friends (who isn’t?) I recommend you find groups or activities that you genuinely enjoy. This way you’ll have the opportunity to connect with people who have similar interests. And once you’re there, take a risk! Talk to people, exchange contact information, and follow up with them. It may feel scary at first, but the reward outweighs the momentary uncomfortable feeling you may have.

Friendship and dating

In many ways, the most important friendship in our lives is the one we have with our romantic partners. The first criteria we should look for in this partner is someone who is ultimately a good friend to us, meaning that they are kind, positive, loving, and supportive. If we’re dating someone and they’re a jerk, it’s probably safe to assume that they’re not a good friend. To avoid this, I recommend seeking out someone who is a good friend first, i.e. before the romance and sexual stuff gets in the way.

When there are bumps in a friendship or a romantic relationship , it’s important to work through those tough times. The tricky part is that it will take two people to fix that issue. We can only control our actions and hold ourselves accountable, but we cannot control our friend or our partner's reaction. In addition to our own actions, we have control over the friends or partners that we choose in the first place. If we prioritize choosing good people who we can trust will work through issues with us, then we can work through anything.

Friendships are a crucial part of living a fulfilling life. It’s so important that we surround ourselves with people who we have fun with, who support us, and people who make us better. You may already have beautiful friendships in your life, but if you’re still in the market for friends, it’s never too late to cultivate new relationships that will make your life even more magnificent.

  • Best Friend Essay

An Introduction

Friendship is one of the purest things that one can ever ask for. There are so many people whom we meet in the journey of life but very few of them leave a mark on us. The person who I consider as my best friend has made a significant impact on my life. We have shared beautiful moments together and the most beautiful thing is that our friendship is still growing. I feel I am the luckiest to have someone like him as my best friend.

Friendship with My Best Friend

We became friends at the time of admission to our new class. In the first few days, we were a bit hesitant to talk to each other as we did not know each other. But, as time flew we became the best buddies in the class. I can remember on the first day when I introduced myself to him and tried to talk to him, I got very little response. I thought it would not work out. But surprisingly, we became best friends in the middle of the academic session.

People say that we complement each other. Our hobbies are the same. We both are very fond of cricket and we keep sharing lots of things about the game together. At the time when any problem arises, we try to solve it together. Our houses are also a stone’s throw distance apart. So, we visit each other’s place quite often. As a result, our parents have become friends too!

During summer break last year, we went to a summer camp together. It was so much fun! We discovered that our choice of storybooks and fictional characters is also quite similar.

While together, we sometimes use different signs and gestures to communicate with each other which no one can understand. I have realized one thing that he is no less than family to me and as if we are brothers from different mothers.

There are several reasons behind this bonding of ours. One is respect. My best friend is a warm-hearted person and always encourages me to help others. He is also very fond of music which, I think, makes him a more loveable person. He loves singing and I am learning to play the guitar. Someday, we wish to perform together on stage as a band.

Apart from the above qualities, it is his kindness that impresses me a lot. His attitude towards the poor and downtrodden is worth appreciating. One day I saw him feeding a poor boy outside our school his own Tiffin. From that day, he has earned another level of respect from me. I feel inspired by him too.

With my friend around, I have learnt how the saying “a friend in need is a friend indeed” is true. There has not been a single such incident when I have missed my school due to some illness and he has not helped me with his classwork. Our mutual respect and admiration are sure to make our friendship stronger with the years. A best friend is truly a valuable gem and I am lucky to have found that gem of my life.

In life, we come across so many different people who influence us in some way or another. Some leave, some stay. Most of us get into these relationships without having  some deep thinking about them. A friend is someone you are close to, it doesn't matter how long they have been there in your life. They could be someone you bond with over a favorite movie or tv show, maybe you share the love of going to the library together and reading books or someone with whom you can have deep conversations with or perhaps a new friendship you formed at school or work. A friend can be of any kind in our lives who naturally just makes our life better and enjoyable just by being in it and it's important to reflect on what characteristics are important in friendships because they have a strong role in shaping our lives. You need to understand what true friends look like and what kind of people are the ones you need to avoid.

Who is your Best Friend?

Your best friend is someone with whom you share close affection or bond. You share some relatively common thoughts and values with friends. It does not matter if the person is present offline or online, your next-door neighbor friend or a friend who is 1000 miles away. People move or travel and you can have them far away from you for a long period of time or maybe you even met them online in this day and age is quite normal but that does not need to be a defining characteristic in looking for a best friend. Often, a friend is someone you trust, someone you can share your sorrows and trouble with without being judged and you can be there for them in the same manner or enjoy being around

Some friends are casual, you may talk sometimes, hang out if you are ever in the same country and share a few good laughs. Once you start talking and catch up on each other's lives it's like no time has passed. This friendship just feels secure , and it is just easy to pick up where you guys left off. A good friend is empathetic to your struggles or what you're going through and shows that they care by validating your feelings, You can be vulnerable and open with. This is because friends trust friends, and are there to support you in your bad times.

Then there are people you have known on social media, in which the two of you have your accounts linked together on social media, but maybe you don't talk much or just happen to know each other through mutuals. Maybe once in a while, you share memes or comment on each other's posts but that is all that you have between each other. You should not consider social media 'friends' to automatically be real-life friends as you only know each other through what you present yourself as online.

Friend or Acquaintance

An acquaintance is someone who you talk to on occasion because they are in the same university or workplace, but the bond of a true friend is just not there but is just for a good laugh's sake. An acquaintance won't be the person you go to when you are having a hard time, as you would to a friend. Also, some acquaintances become friends with time knowing how well you both bond and relate to one other, if we only give them a chance then that definitely does happen.

STRUCTURING a My Best Friend Essay

This is an essay. It says so right there in the title! Just how complex the structure of a student’s essay is will depend on essential factors such as age and ability. However, the 5-paragraph essay structure is a perfect framework for this type of composition.

One of the most beautiful aspects of the 5-paragraph essay is that it is easily modified to differentiate between lower or higher ability students by simply adjusting the number of paragraphs. The essay will still contain the same essential elements of an introduction, a body, and a conclusion, regardless of how long it is.

The 5-paragraph (or hamburger) essay is a craft in itself and much too broad a topic to go into at length. Check out our complete guide here if you want more detail on this handy essay template.

Briefly though, in essence, the 5-paragraph essay comprises three parts:

  • The Introduction : The opening paragraph will orient the reader to the topic of the essay, in this case, by introducing the show’s star, the best friend .
  • The Body : In the traditional 5-paragraph essay, this makes up three of the five paragraphs. In this type of essay, the student will use these paragraphs to flesh out the main reasons they value their friend, or (at a more advanced level) they will tell a story about them that illustrates why they are the student’s best friend.
  • The Conclusion : In the conclusion, the student can sum up why their friend holds the hallowed title of ‘best’. Or, at a higher level, the student can use the final paragraph of their essay to look forward to the future of their relationship with their best friend.

While we are teaching a short essay on my best friend’, it can also be approached from another angle, i.e., as a nonfiction story.

While the clearcut essay format may be eminently suitable for younger students, you may wish to revisit this genre with older students, this time emphasising storytelling.

In this creative nonfiction approach, students can merge the essay format with storytelling elements such as character, setting, central conflict, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution.

Constructing their best friend composition in this manner allows students to work on structuring a nonfiction text. Simultaneously, it offers them a chance to develop their creative flair.

My Best Friend in 10 Lines

Another approach particularly well-suited to younger students is the my best friend essay 10 lines format.

This helps younger students get writing by giving them a clear target to aim for, which makes planning easy.

However, you can still introduce the three elements of the 5-paragraph essay here. As students list the points they want to make in their 10 lines, they can be encouraged to group these into introduction, body, and conclusion sections.

For example, a plan might look like this:

A ‘My Best Friend in 10 Lines’ Plan

Introduction

Line 1: My friend’s name.

Line 2: What she looks like.

Line 3: Where she is from/her family.

Line 4: What friendship means to me.

Line 5: How we met.

Line 6: The kindest thing she has ever done.

Line 7: The funniest thing she has ever done.

Line 8: My absolute favorite thing about her.

Line 9: Restate why she is my best friend.

Line 10: How I see our future together.

To complete their 10-line ode to their friend, the student simply builds proper sentences around each of these (or similar) ideas.

More on Planning a My Best Friend Composition

As we can see in the sample plan above, the planning process is relatively straightforward when the 5-paragraph essay structure serves as a framework. However, we may want to take things up a notch for students of a higher ability.

A good, old-fashioned brainstorming session is an excellent starting point for the student. They can list their favorite memories and their friend’s best features.

While younger students may inevitably write something of a hagiography (a biography of a saint!), older students may want to present a more realistic portrait of their ever-present amigo.

Likewise, if the student is undertaking their composition in a narrative nonfiction form, they’ll need to map out the narrative arc of their story at the planning stage.

As with any story, the conflict will serve as the engine of the narrative. However, this conflict does not have to take the form of a problem between the writer and the best friend. After all, this text is more likely to be something of a love letter than a letter of complaint. Instead, the conflict is more likely to take the form of a problem or a challenge faced by the writer and their pal together.

Whether or not the student’s text will take a full-blown story form, true-to-life anecdotes will bring life to the student’s writing. The planning process is the perfect time to dump these onto paper, even if they don’t all make it into the final draft.

How to Start a MY Best Friend Essay

As with most text types, fiction or nonfiction, the writer will want to grab the reader’s attention from the outset. An effective way of doing this is by using a hook.

How to Hook The Reader

The student writer has many methods available to grasp the reader’s attention. While some of these will only be suitable for more advanced students, most can be adapted with a bit of effort for our younger writers.

  • Start in the Middle of the Action

Technically known as, In Medias Res , this technique involves opening the story in the middle of a moment of dramatic tension with the exposition filled in later. This type of wizardry is probably best reserved for the more skilled student writer.

  • Make a Bold Promise at the Outset

The promise of a big payoff can undoubtedly catch a reader’s eye and draw them in, but the student-writer must follow through later in the text. For less experienced students, you may want to offer a writing prompt to help out here. For example,

My best friend Jack is truly one of a kind, but just how special he is wasn’t clear to me until the day a fire broke out in our school.

Students can quickly adapt such prompts by changing the event mentioned to their own circumstances.

  • Create a Sense of Intimacy

Another way to grasp the reader’s interest is to create a sense of intimacy right from the start. This can be achieved by addressing the reader directly in a conversational tone. Students should use informal language and approach writing their text as if they were speaking to a close friend – this is perfect for this writing style.

  • Open with an Anecdote

Another way to create interest (and a sense of intimacy) is to open up with an interesting anecdote about the friend. Students can select an interesting or humorous story to use as a carrot to entice the reader in. The student could substitute an exciting or amusing fact in shorter pieces for a full-blown anecdote.

  • Begin with a Quotation

Quotes are a great way to garner attention. There are many online repositories of inspirational quotes on every topic under the sun where students can find a golden nugget of friendship-based wisdom to open their masterpieces. They must simply type in keywords such as ‘famous’, ‘quotes’, and ‘friendship’ to uncover a smorgasbord of well-articulated wisdom for students to choose from. However, students should ensure the sentiment expressed in their selected quote ties into the type of friendship described in their work.

Working the Body

As we stated earlier in this article, the 5-paragraph essay structure, or the narrative writing arc, lays out a suitable template for the student-writer to work their way through the body of their text. However, it’s worth pointing out five areas where a little attention can significantly impact.

  • Get Specific

The devil’s in the details. The more specific the student is in their writing, the more effectively they will communicate with the reader.

Encourage students to be as precise as possible in their descriptions. A thesaurus is an excellent tool to help students find just the right word for the job.

  • Vary Sentence Length

Often, emergent writers rely on the same couple of simple sentence structures in their writing. This soon makes the writing monotonous for the reader; if they continue to read, it is only with effort that they will finish the student’s work.

Variety is not only the spice of life but also the spice of good writing. Encourage students to vary their sentence structures and alternate between long and short sentences to diversify the rhythm of their writing and evoke interest on the reader’s part.

  • Use Dialogue

Weaving dialogue into a my best friend essay text is a great way to bring colour and variety to a student’s writing. It also allows the student to practice punctuating dialogue – an essential skill!

Students will need to learn to listen carefully if they are to be able to write how people actually speak. Encouraging them to read their dialogue aloud is an effective way to check if it rings true.

  • Incorporate Literary Devices

Though this is undoubtedly a nonfiction text, it has firm roots in creative writing too. Students should incorporate some of the literary techniques and devices that we’d more commonly associate with poetry and fiction writing to add colour, creativity, and imagination to their writing.

For example, for younger students, physical descriptions of their BFF provide the perfect opportunity to introduce similes and hyperbole. Don’t be afraid to get comical here; writing should be fun, after all.

Does their friend have a big nose? How big? As big as an elephant’s trunk, perhaps?

Just make sure students avoid being too mean or poking fun at areas too sensitive for their friends.

It is easy to differentiate different abilities by challenging stronger students to use more complex literary devices in their work. Zoomorphism anyone?

  • Evoke the Five Senses

Emergent writers often display a bias towards only using the sense of sight in their descriptions. To bring their writing up a notch, encourage your students to employ all five senses in their writing.

By evoking the sense of hearing, smell, taste, and touch in their work, students will help their writing to come alive in the reader’s imagination.

WRAPPING THINGS Up

In a regular 5-paragraph essay, the concluding paragraph is usually the time to summarize the main arguments and drive home the thesis statement one more time. Obviously, things are a little bit different in a “my best friend essay.”

Of course, students can take the opportunity to revisit and restate the main reasons why their best friend holds the best-friend-championship belt. Still, there is a more artistic way to use their composition’s final paragraph.

Ask students to think about their friendship and where they see it in five, ten, twenty, or even forty years.

Undoubtedly, for younger students, in particular, this may be a bit of a challenge, but it can be a fun thought experiment too. Students can pose themselves questions to help, such as:

  • Will we be neighbours?
  • Will we work together?
  • Will our children go to school together? Etc.

Taking a tentative step into the possibilities of the future can make for an impactful ending.

My Best Friend Essay 500 Words

My best friend’s name is Siddhart Jadhav. We have been friends since class 7th A in Alfred Nobel High School. We both studied in the same school in childhood but not in the same class as our sections are different. Later that time, all the students from all the sections are sorted according to the previous academics’ percentages and grades and separated into four different sections. Due to this separation, I met Siddhart in the 7th A, and we became friends at that time. Later, time goes by, and our friendship bond becomes stronger, and we become best friends with each other and spend most of our time together in school, tuition, and extra classes. We also sit on the same bench in the classroom.

Our likes and dislikes are also common, and we also love to dance and sing. In every annual gathering and other function that is held in our school, we both participate and give our best performances. We never wanted to win the competitions, our intention was to enjoy the gathering. Some of our school teachers don’t like our togetherness and friendship, but some of them loved and always blessed our strong bonded friendship to stay longer and longer. Siddharth and I always talked in the running classroom, and most of the time, our teacher also punished both of us by standing outside the classroom. We always tried to irritate the lecturer in the chemistry lectures by asking tons of doubts and questions. We eat tiffin boxes sitting on the last benches.

Apart from this naughtiness, Siddharth is very punctual, and he is never late for coming to school and attending classes. He always completes his homework at a given time and being with him, I also start studying very well and completing my homework on time. He keeps his books and copies very clean. His writing is very nice and encourages me to write cleanly and clearly for better understanding. My parents also compliment my friend that being with him, I also become responsible and a good student.

Siddharth and I are both excellent football players and athletes. When we both start playing the football game, the opponent team never wins. Our sports teacher always motivates us and tells us that we will become good football players one day. My parents also know Siddharth very much, and they like his pleasant behavior. Feel free when Siddharth and I stay together, whether for playing games, video games, study, or for going out to have fun with other classmates. Siddharth is my best friend, my first friend. He is the one who offers me help in my studies when I need it, supports me and always shows love to me, defends me, and stands by my side in any situation no matter what.

In academics, my best friend, Siddharth, is chosen to be awarded the best student of the year in the 10th class. He is one of the brilliant students of our school and also won many of the competitions that were held in school. He is like a well-wisher, and I always enjoyed his company. He, too, feels secure and relieved by spending time with me as well. He is like a problem-solving friend to me. I never wanted to lose him in my life.

My Best Friend Essay: 500 Words

Introduction.

‘A man is known by the company he keeps’, Says a proverb. Hence one needs to be very careful in selecting friends. As Shakespeare has pointed out in his play ‘As You Like It’, ‘Most friendship is feigning, most loving mere folly’. Fair-weather friends are plenty; true and reliable friends are few and far between.

My Best Friend

I have many friends in my school , but most of them are only so-called friends. They are not dependable. Out of them, only Arvind is my true and sincere friend. He is my best friend. I am, indeed, proud of his friendship.

Arvind is the only son of a district court judge. Even then he is very humble and modest. His financial position is sound and enviable. Yet prosperity has not turned him proud and rude. He is not puffed with pride.

His Qualities

Arvind has all the fine qualities of head and heart. He is tall, healthy, and handsome. He is affectionate, kind, sociable, and extremely helpful. He is a good sportsman on the playground and an inviable scholar in the classroom.  All praise, honour, and admiration sit lightly on him. He is not swollen-headed. He is all the more modest and polite because of them.

He is a hard-working boy. He is kind and compassionate. His heart melts at the sight of poverty, sickness and human suffering of any kind. In order to serve the suffering humanity selflessly, he has decided to become a doctor and set up his medical practice in some rural Adivasi area. He often says that the selfless service of the poor is the true service of God.

Our Friendship

I am so proud that I have such an ideal friend like Arvind. Because of his company and rare friendship, my outlook, attitude, and behaviour have been positively influenced. His friendship has given a new, healthy dimension to my life and I, now, look forward to a happy and bright future.

Arvind is indeed, the architect of my life and the moulder of my destiny in the right direction. He is my friend, guide, and philosopher. I envy myself for having such an ideal friend.

This is often because the sine qua non of friendship is an affinity of the mind, tastes, and temperament. The few ins who we discover the affinity, we make friends with and that they carve out a permanent place in our hearts.

Friends are an integral part of your life, be the varsity years, school life , colleagues at the office, or friends near your house. Everyone needs friends to share their feelings, spend some blast, and relax in life.

I’m fortunate to possess such a friend in my life on which I can just rely on love or money. Whether it’s sharing my feelings, my good and bad times, and sometimes even my clothes, I just enjoy everything with him. His name is Rishi.

First meeting with my best friend at school

When I was in class 2, Rishi joined our college and our class. His parents have just migrated to our city, and there he was, the primary time during a new city, new school, new class, and new people around it everywhere.

Fortunately, my teacher made him sit with me within the class. He was a touch shy initially, but by the top of the day, we both felt comfortable with one another.

Subsequently, once we met one another a day, we realised that we had quite many similarities, and this allowed us to gel with one another quickly. Since then, there has been no looking back.

Our friendship

Our friendship slowly became the ask of the category, and gradually we became best friends. Even our teachers came to understand about it and. But, because of all, nobody ever tried to make the distance between us as we complemented one another so perfectly that even our teachers and fogeys felt happy about it.

We want to help one another with class notes also as homework if one among us couldn’t attend the varsity thanks to any reason. We had this healthy competition in us on who would stand first within the class.

Our common interests

Apart from studies, we both a standard interest in Ping pong. We both joined an academy and want to choose practice together within the evenings. The sole difference in our habits, perhaps, was the while I used to be right-handed, he was a left-handed person.

But this was also a blessing in disguise for us as thanks to this very reason, we made an honest team and were even selected in our college team to play as a doubles team. We both won many competitions together and brought accolades to the varsity. This made our parents also as school teachers very pleased with us.

Unique career paths

After our schooling, we got separated, as we both chose different career paths . While I became an engineer, Rishi visited a particular city to become a scientist.

But, as life would have it, after some years, we both landed within the same city and came in touch with one another again. My friend has been the most crucial strength on behalf of me in my life.

During the weekend, we visited a brief cookery course also, and that we sometimes get a kick out of the prospect to cooperate within the kitchen and make some creative dishes.

Sometimes these dishes end up well; however, there are times once we don’t hit the nail on the top as we’d not have pursued the formula accurately. Our wives are thoughtful and don’t admonish us much once we ruin a dish.

My friend and that I appreciate watching films together amid occasions or excursions. We like watching comedies. Horror films don’t excite us and that we attempt to stand back from them.

My friend-My strength

In my times of need, my ally has been a pillar of strength on behalf of me. Not only did he look out to find out that I resolve my issues, but also ensured that my family isn’t affected by many thanks to the turmoil in my business life.

He has always encouraged me to face problems as they’re and to not duck under during adverse situations. I’m glad that I even have such a friend in my life on which I can believe blindly.

Why a Friend is so important? (His or her friendship importance in life)

It is a sign of a healthy relationship, and therefore the friendship starts from here. And for many folks, friends are more or less family. You and your friends will have many things in common.

You spent most of your day together with your friends. You share anything and everything with your friends. In short, the foremost memorable moments in everybody’s lives will be those spent with the simplest friends. Though miles apart, we either call or send messages on a day today.

Wherever we go, memory connects us and arranges a meet once every three months. We chat about the events in our lives cherish our mischievous moments together, reminisce about our good old days, capture every single moment in photographs, and separate again.

A friend is anyone with whom a bond exists, and mutual understanding forms a relationship. An individual could have many friends counting on the social character and, therefore, the simple being relatable with others.

At different stages of life, we’d like friends who are an equivalent level as us to suit in, but to some people, that’s not an option because they believe functioning independently, which remains okay.

Psychologists recommend that folks should co-exist together so they will help one another during times of need. There’s also an indisputable fact that coping mechanisms to worry are happier when friends are involved.

A lover might be anybody, but an ally is typically that one person you value the foremost of all of your friends. A best friend is like a family. I hope you liked this essay on my best friend.

Mucking around can lead to best of times

Growing up on Long Island was a privilege. The best times for my family were when I was ages 5 to 13, from 1957 to 1965.

We lived on a 9-acre property called Tanmor Farm, owned by my dad’s parents, in Syosset. My parents, younger sister Kathy and I stayed in a small, four-room house.

Dad and his brother, Carl, were trying to realize a dream of breeding and raising thoroughbred racehorses. At 8, I had chores like mucking the stalls and feeding and watering the three horses before Dad got home from working at Uncle Carl’s butcher shop. I loved the horses and my responsibilities. Soon, I was begging for a pony. After all, I received no allowance for my chores.

Not long after, Dad said he found a pony we might get. At a horse farm in Woodbury, a couple was selling “Checkers,” stubby-legged and brown and white with a big head and a brown eye and a blue one. I thought he looked ugly, but beggars can’t be choosers.

Dad said I should try a ride, and I jumped on. Never having ridden a horse, I was game and settled in with a slow walk. Feeling confident, I kicked him with my heels. Checkers took off like Secretariat. I held on for my life, grabbing the saddle horn and squeezing him with my legs. Checkers must have sensed my inexperience and tried to buck and rub me off against the fence alongside the road. I finally got him to stop. He must have been tired, and I was thankful I wasn’t dumped off.

When I returned to my dad, he asked, “How was he?” Fearing I’d never get a chance at another pony, I responded, “He’s good,” even though I thought he was bad. Dad paid $50, saddle and bridle included. Off we went, with me holding Checkers in the back of the couple’s 1959 Cadillac convertible, with the seat removed. We rode through the village of Syosset, with onlookers along Jackson Avenue waving and laughing.

Weeks later, a woman asked Dad if she could board her gray pony, Frisky. A deal was struck, and I could ride and use Frisky in exchange for boarding. Wow, two ponies, and Frisky was fast! We had pony races — My cousin Carl rode Checkers, and I rode Frisky (Checkers always lost). Carl and I also played “cowboys and the U.S. Calvary.”

Soon, Dad asked, “Why not sell pony rides?” Next to my house, just off Jericho Turnpike, we put up a sign on Sundays and were in business. Carl and I walked the two ponies and got 25 cents per ride. Summer Sundays earned us an average of $15 ($150 today), and it was fun, too. Dad made me split the money with Carl although I did all the work. Dad won. “He’s your cousin,” Dad said.

After three summers, we had outgrown the ponies and discovered baseball was more fun. So, Checkers and Frisky spent their days grazing in the fields.

We don’t see roadside pony rides anymore. Liability must have become an issue although we never thought of it. We had no helmets or straps for the kids or for us.

Times change, and my life had a big one in 1965. Grandpa died, and Tanmor Farm was sold, gone forever. It’s become Pond View Drive, now with eight homes — where we played and sold pony rides on summer Sundays.

Taylor Swift brought some of her closest pals to watch her boyfriend Travis Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs compete in the 2024 Super Bowl , including her best friend Ashley Avignone.

The “Cruel Summer” singer was joined by Blake Lively and Ice Spice , as well as her family at the big game. Cheering next to them was Avignone, a stylist and designer who has been friends with Swift for years.

The two reportedly got close through their mutual friend, Emma Stone , when they were still teenagers and have stayed friends since. Apart from the Super Bowl, Avignone has attended events with Swift for years, including earlier games in the 2023 NFL season.

“30 years of life for you, 11 years of friendship for us,” Avignone wrote on Instagram in honor of Swift’s 30th birthday in 2019. “Thanks for being the bestest friend, listener, dance party-starter, story teller, haircut enthusiast, with the biggest, warmest, and most generous heart. Happy Birthday Tay!! Love you to pieces ❤️.”

So who is Taylor Swift’s close friend? Here’s everything to know about Ashley Avignone and her relationship with the pop star.

She went to college in Los Angeles

Avignone first found her passion for fashion when she attended the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in Los Angeles. She graduated in 2006, per her LinkedIn , and began working as a stylist shortly after.

“I went to school for fashion design when celebrity styling was first getting a name,” she said in a 2016 interview with School of Doodle . “I started seeing that and thought I could do that, I can pick outfits out for people, I’ve been doing it for my friends for years.”

Now, Avignone mainly lives in New York City.

She appeared on The Rachel Zoe Project

In 2010, Avignone joined season 3 of The Rachel Zoe Project , the reality TV show that followed stylist Rachel Zoe as she dressed various celebrities. Avignone replaced Taylor Jacobson as Zoe’s style assistant.

The show was eventually canceled in 2013, but it helped Avignone on her way to becoming a successful stylist herself.

She is a stylist and designer

Avignone always knew she wanted to work in fashion since she started drawing and designing her own clothes as early as 4 years old, she told the blog Neely and Chloe in 2019. However, by the time she graduated from college, she said, she was burnt out and looking to pivot into something other than design.

“Two weeks after graduation, I started assisting one of the top celebrity stylists in L.A. and it just stuck with me,” she told the blog. “After years of assisting various stylists, I ventured out on my own. As I mentioned I don’t do so much red carpet work, I now focus more on the brand side.”

In 2012, Avignone signed with The Wall Group, which she credited for helping her find her big break as a solo stylist.

“I assisted the best stylists in the game for about 6 years, and when I decided to break out on my own I was nervous,” she told the blog Simply in October 2013. “I was extremely lucky in finding representation right away. You have to believe in yourself, but it also helps when others believe in you too.”

She became friends with Swift through Emma Stone

Jeffrey Mayer/Getty

Swift and Avignone first became close through Stone, who has been a longtime friend of both women. The three attended the premiere of Easy A , Stone’s breakout movie, in 2010 together before also accompanying the Poor Things actress to the 2011 Vanity Fair Oscars party.

Swift wrote a hidden message to her in the Red album booklet

When the booklet for Red came out in October 2012, fans saw Swift had written a hidden message, naming four of her friends. “Ashley, Dianna, Claire, Selena,” the message read, referring to Avignone, Dianna Agron , Claire Winter and Selena Gomez .

The four pals even appeared in Swift’s music video for “22 ,” dancing alongside her as she enjoyed her 22nd birthday celebration with cake.

She is part of Swift’s inner circle

Since the two became friends, Avignone has remained in Swift’s close inner circle, spending time with the pop star's other pals like Lively and Gigi Hadid . She joined Gomez and the Haim sisters at Swift’s Independence Day party in 2023, and in 2019, she posted snaps on Instagram with Swift’s friends — including some of the cast of Queer Eye — at her 30th birthday party.

She attended multiple football games with Swift during the 2023 season

Maddie Meyer/Getty

As Swift ventured into the football world while supporting her boyfriend Kelce at games, she brought along some of her closest friends for the ride. Avignone was cheering alongside Swift and Brittany Mahomes, quarterback Patrick Mahomes ’ wife, at a December 2023 game against the New England Patriots.

She also joined Swift in her suite at the Super Bowl where the two were stressing and rooting for the Chiefs as they went up against the San Francisco 49ers. During a commercial break with eight minutes left in the second quarter of the game, the jumbotron panned to Swift and Avignone while they both chugged their drinks to fans cheering them on.

Alaska Woman Gets 99 Years in Catfish Murder-for-Hire of Best Friend

Lured by a false promise of at least $9 million, Denali Brehmer, 23, of Anchorage, plotted to kill Cynthia Hoffman, prosecutors said.

Wearing an orange top, Denali Brehmer, with short blond hair, stands in a courtroom with two law enforcement officers nearby.

By Jesus Jiménez

An Alaska woman who arranged to have her best friend killed in 2019 after a man she met online promised her $9 million to do so was sentenced on Monday to 99 years in prison, state prosecutors said.

Judge Andrew Peterson of Anchorage Superior Court sentenced the woman, Denali Brehmer, 23, of Anchorage, who pleaded guilty last year to one count of first-degree murder in the death of the friend, Cynthia Hoffman, the Alaska Department of Law said in a statement .

Evidence presented at the sentencing showed that Ms. Hoffman, 19, was fatally shot on June 2, 2019, on a bank of the Eklutna River near Thunderbird Falls and that her body was later placed in the river, according to the Department of Law. Prosecutors later learned that Ms. Brehmer had been hired to kill Ms. Hoffman in exchange for millions of dollars.

During the hearing, Judge Peterson described the murder of Ms. Hoffman as “tragic and senseless,” the Department of Law said.

Patrick McKay, the Anchorage assistant district attorney, said in court on Monday that Ms. Brehmer “engaged in one of the most serious crimes that we have in Alaska.”

Ms. Brehmer had requested a sentence of 80 years with 20 years suspended, and prosecutors had requested a sentence of 99 years, the Department of Law said.

According to court documents, Ms. Brehmer met a man online who convinced her that his name was Tyler and that he was a millionaire from Kansas. The man offered Ms. Brehmer at least $9 million to kill someone in Alaska and take pictures and video of the murder, according to the indictment.

But in reality, “Tyler” was Darin Schilmiller, 25, of New Salisbury, Ind., and he was not a millionaire, according to the indictment. Mr. Schilmiller was “catfishing” Ms. Brehmer, the indictment said, referring to the act of deceiving someone online by making up a fake identity.

Ms. Brehmer agreed to commit a murder for Mr. Schilmiller, and she enlisted four friends to carry out the killing. The indictment identified two of them as Caleb Leyland, 24, and Kayden McIntosh. Two minors who were not identified in the indictment were also involved, prosecutors said. The group selected Ms. Hoffman as the target, according to the indictment.

On June 2, 2019, Ms. Brehmer, Mr. McIntosh and Ms. Hoffman went to Thunderbird Falls for what was supposed to be a hike, the indictment said. Along the Eklutna River, Ms. Hoffman’s hands and feet were bound with duct tape, and Mr. McIntosh shot her once in the back of the head before she was dumped in the river, according to the charging documents.

Mr. McIntosh later confessed to shooting Ms. Hoffman, prosecutors said.

Mr. McKay, the assistant district attorney, said on Monday that Ms. Brehmer had “conspired with numerous other individuals in and outside of Alaska, including juveniles, forever altering everybody’s life.”

“She may not have pulled the trigger,” Mr. McKay said, “but this never would have happened it if it weren’t for Denali Brehmer.”

Prosecutors said that Mr. Schilmiller had also solicited Ms. Brehmer to try to obtain child pornography, which led to federal charges against her. She pleaded guilty last year to conspiracy to produce child pornography, and sentencing in that case is scheduled for March 4, according to court documents. A lawyer for Ms. Brehmer did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Mr. Schilmiller, who pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree murder, was sentenced in January to 99 years in prison for his role, according to the Department of Law. He also faces federal child pornography charges.

Mr. Leyland, who pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in November, is to be sentenced on June 10, the Department of Law said.

Mr. McIntosh awaits trial on murder charges, according to the Department of Law.

Lawyers for Mr. Schilmiller, Mr. Leyland and Mr. McIntosh did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Thursday.
