My University of Maryland Transfer Application Essay That Got me Accepted

I applied to college the other day. My University of Maryland (UMD) transfer essay was one of the more fun aspects of applying.

You might remember that about a year ago I asked the internet what I should do — return to university or not.

Most respondents said I should go back to school.

I’m excited to share (a year later) that I have taken the first step towards making that a reality. I’ve applied to become a student at the University of Maryland.

I had a lot of fun writing my UMD transfer essay and I’m excited to share it here, online. The University of Maryland transfer application has no prompt. It’s pretty “wide-open.” The only restriction is a 300 word limit. It was a challenge to create a compelling argument in so few words. Hopefully I did.

The “prompt”

Please describe your past academic experiences and your reasons for wishing to enroll to Maryland at this point in your academic career. Students who have been out of school for several years, or who have a personal circumstance that affected performance, may wish to address that situation in their essay. Your essay should be no more than 300 words.

The UMD transfer essay

The University of Maryland has embraced the “Fearless Ideas” mantra. “Fearless ideas ignite bold invention.” “Fearless ideas drive passionate leaders.” “Fearless ideas launch daring ventures.” It is undeniable that fearless ideas are at the core of the University’s mission and vision.

At 21 years old I am fortunate to have experience pursuing “fearless ideas” — I founded a company from my dorm room while in college. Yet, one thing I am missing is a strong academic foundation. I’m excited to combine my experience with a world-class education.

In the past I have struggled to take schoolwork seriously, yet now with experience under my belt, I feel more prepared than ever to dedicate myself to the challenge. I am applying to the University of Maryland initially as a non-degree seeking student to help me pursue my own fearless ideas.

In December of 2014, my mother was diagnosed with a rare form of late stage lung cancer. When she told me, I knew that I needed to be at home to give and receive support. I withdrew from the University of Pittsburgh to live full-time at home in Maryland.

In the nearly two years since, I have started my career. I joined an established company called MarketSmart, founded by a University of Maryland alum, Greg Warner.

At MarketSmart I started as a graphic designer and web programmer — skills I had taught myself while in high school. Since then, my role has evolved. Now, I oversee an entirely new department that I helped create. I was given an opportunity to pursue a fearless idea, and I ran with it. Along the way I learned that it takes hard work to turn a fearless idea into a successful reality.

Returning to college is my latest fearless idea. I can’t wait to get started.

The decision

I was accepted as a student to the University of Maryland.

I ultimately declined to attend.

Choosing a Major

Whether you know exactly what you want to study or are still figuring it out, we encourage you to explore UMD's academic programs . As you explore you may see that some of our majors are considered Limited Enrollment Programs (LEP). These programs have limited space and, therefore, have more competitive admission criteria.

On the UMD application, you'll select a preferred major. This information will not impact whether or not you are admissible to the university. If you selected an LEP, you will also be reviewed by the specific program to determine admission to your preferred major.

While most students are admitted to their preferred major, some LEP applicants may not be. Students who are undecided or undeclared (working on getting into an LEP) will work with Letters & Sciences advisors to explore their interests or complete LEP gateway requirements.

Benefits of Applying Early Action

We strongly encourage you to apply early action to receive priority consideration for admission and merit-based scholarships . Your application must be complete by the early action deadline in order to be reviewed. Applications that are not complete by the early action deadline will be considered for the regular application deadline.

Beginning your biocomputational engineering journey:, tips for your best application as a transfer student, open career doors at umd: earn your b.s. as a terp , how important is a bachelor's degree.

According to the College Board’s 2019 Trends in Higher Education report, the median earnings of bachelor’s degree recipients (with no advanced degree) working full time in 2018 were $24,900 higher than those of high school graduates, and $15,300 higher than those of associate’s degree graduates. That same report reveals that adults who have earned at least a bachelor’s degree are more likely to engage in educational activities with their family members, volunteer in their communities, participate in elections, and – believe it or not – exercise regularly.

In the biotech and human health fields, a bachelor’s degree is uniquely critical as careers in these fields require a broad skill set. In fact, most jobs in these areas require a bachelor’s degree, even for entry level positions.

Computational methods and data science are exploding into every facet of the world, particularly across engineering. There are very few degrees nationwide that combine the fundamentals in biology and quantitative problem-solving with computation and data science skills. This sets biocomputational engineering graduates apart from all others – including bioengineering, computer science, and biology graduates. – Dr. Jarred Callura, University of Maryland Biocomputational Engineering Professor

Think about some of the most common fields in human health today. Unlike decades ago, many of these now involve innovations in computer programming, statistics, and IoT (Internet of Things) technology in ways we never before could have imagined. Public and global health organizations rely heavily on biotech researchers who can lead investigations into the efficacy of therapeutic drugs and vaccines. Health care organizations increasingly turn to artificial intelligence, blockchain, interoperability, and cloud technology to develop new resources to improve patient care and outcomes, all while streamlining processes and automating tasks. And, at the root of it all, biotech companies look to statisticians and computer programmers to conduct pivotal analyses in order to shed new light on biological data.

Biocomputational engineers are among the best equipped to provide new insights that can shape the way biotech companies design their products, track disease spread, or even harness the power of everyday wearable devices similar to today’s FitBits and Apple Watches.

The A. James Clark School of Engineering is ranked among the top 25 undergraduate engineering programs according to the   U.S. News and World Report . Clark School graduates instantly inherit a global network of nearly 45,000 Clark School alumni and 400,000 University of Maryland alumni. Just four years ago, an unprecedented investment of $219.5 million from the A. James & Alice B. Clark Foundation sparked the Fearless Ideas Mpact Challenge: a “moonshot” program designed to spur innovations in engineering research that have the potential to improve the lives of millions of people.

Our faculty are passionate about their work and dedicated to their students. More than 100 Clark School faculty members are fellows of engineering professional societies, and more than 50 are recipients of National Science Foundation Early Career Awards. Our Biocomputational Engineering faculty members are experts in this fast-evolving field – hailing from the biotech industry and research labs with experience working in artificial intelligence, medicine, data science, research and development for drug discovery, and more.

Within an hour’s drive from both the Universities at Shady Grove and the University of Maryland, College Park campuses are many of the nation’s top bioscience and biotech research forces and innovators – including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) – as well as more than 500 biotech firms and 2,700 life science organizations. In addition, companies and firms like AstraZeneca, Kite Pharma, ACell, Precigen, and Novavax have a presence in the area, while GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has a vaccine research and development center that’s less than a 10-minute walk from our Shady Grove campus!

Bioengineering vs. Biocomputational Engineering: What’s the Difference?

Bioengineering is steadily becoming the world’s largest industrial sector and, as a result, there is an increasing demand for doctors who are technically competent and for engineers who are properly trained in basic medical science. The bioengineering major covers the breadth of engineering fundamentals and biology, as well as depth into biomedical or biotechnology fields. It emphasizes hands-on experiences in instrumentation and wet lab biology skills.

In contrast, the biocomputational engineering major provides a foundation in engineering fundamentals and biology – and adds programming and data science skills. The BCE program also highlights computational courses in bioengineering including thermodynamics, and applied linear systems, as well as other more specialized elective courses – such as bioinformatics and image processing. Additionally, BCE students hone their programming languages and skills, such as Python, R, and C++, which are critical for data processing and visualization and computer simulations.

Perhaps most importantly, the new B.S. in Biocomputational Engineering degree program teaches contemporary statistical analysis methods, including various machine-learning methods, as well as solid biological applications of artificial intelligence. This intensive training in computational biology is uniquely available only through the BCE program.

section 3 header

While graduates will have the skills to take any programming or data science job, they will be ideal candidates for biotech firms and consulting firms who need problem solvers with knowledge of biology and medicine , and skills to analyze large and complex data sets. - Dr. Ian White, Associate Chair and Director of Undergraduate Studies at the Fischell Department of Bioengineering, University of Maryland

Key Points to Consider:

Those who are interested in biomechanics, biomaterials, biomedical devices, and fundamental biotechnology would likely find that the BIOE major is their best choice. Put simply: students who enjoy building things should choose BIOE over BCE.

Those who are comfortable working in a “dry-lab” environment – at the interface of biology, mathematics, computer science and data science – should select the BCE major. If coding – or even, thinking about how coding works – piques your interest, biocomputational engineering is the right path for you! Skills learned through this new degree program will prepare you for a variety of careers spanning the biotech and public health fields: whether you’re drawn to biotech consulting or health informatics, or you see yourself developing the next great innovations in health IT, a biocomputational engineering degree is your ticket to a future in human health innovation.

The BCE program, located at the Universities at Shady Grove in Rockville, MD, is specially designed to allow students from community colleges or four-year institutions the opportunity to complete their upper-level (years 3 and 4) degree requirements as a student of the University of Maryland’s A. James Clark School of Engineering . Interested BCE transfer applicants generally complete their first two years (60 credits) of lower-level STEM and general education studies before becoming eligible for transfer to the BCE program. Given the prerequisite course requirements, early planning is key to crafting a competitive application and ensuring a smooth transfer application process.

section 4 header

Prior to being admitted to the Biocomputational Engineering degree program, transfer students must complete the prerequisite math/science courses, lower-level General Education requirements (or an associate's degree), and a total of 60 credits.

To ensure a smooth transfer process, we recommend reviewing the below BCE admission requirements roadmap . While each prospective transfer student’s timeline and academic pathway is unique, we recommend that you begin planning your transfer pathway at the beginning of your academic career, or at least one year in advance of your expected transfer semester to the Biocomputational Engineering program.

Whether you’re intending to transfer to the BCE program from a community college or a 4-year institution, understanding how courses transfer to the University of Maryland is essential. The best way to verify which courses will transfer from an outside institution to UMD is to speak with the BCE program representative by booking a meeting . An additional and helpful resource provided by campus is the UMD Transfer Course Database . Through this database, transfer students can search to see which courses from a particular transfer institution have been evaluated by UMD for equivalency. Courses from another institution not listed in the UMD Transfer Course Database can be evaluated by submitting a detailed course syllabus.

While the UMD Transfer Course Database is a great resource, it is dynamic and ever-changing. The best – and easiest! – way to verify your transfer coursework and plan is by creating a transfer pathway in consultation with the BCE program coordinator.

While each applicant’s pathway for transfer to the Biocomputational Engineering program is unique, the BCE program has worked closely with several Maryland community colleges local to the University of Maryland to develop specific pathways prospective BCE students can follow.

How to Transfer Colleges Successfully: Tips for Your Best Application

Engineering, much like navigating the transfer process, is about finding solutions to complex problems and scenarios. Being a successful engineering transfer student will require you to tap into the same set of skills engineers use daily – organization, tenacity, and problem-solving. Additionally, no engineering problem is solved without the help of a team. We encourage you to make use of the available resources – including your STEM, UMD, and Biocomputational Engineering advisors – to tackle the otherwise complex process of transferring.

To get you started, we have compiled insider tips to help you navigate UMD’s transfer application, ensuring you submit your best application.

Intersection 7

Navigating the StandOut Admissions Network Application

The first step for applying to UMD is to create an account in StandOut Admissions Network . Creating an account will allow you to save your progress in each section, so that you do not feel pressured to complete the entire application in one sitting. You will work through 3 main components in the application. Here are a few helpful tips for each section.

  • You will have the opportunity to store personal items and achievements that you are proud of from your academic history in the Locker, but this is not a required section of the application.
  • The locker is a private portion of your application, which means it will not be used in your evaluation by UMD admissions staff.
  • Since you are a transfer student, you will not need to enter all of your high school coursework. There is a box you can check that says, “ I have finished adding my courses.” to bypass entering in your high school coursework.
  • You may complete any or all of the following sections; however, it is not required for transfer applicants: SAT/ACT information, honors & distinctions, academic interests, and activities/experience.
  • Entering your previous and current coursework from all transfer institutions is one of the key components of this process. Please enter all information and follow up by sending an official transcript from each institution.

College List

  • Be sure to add the University of Maryland, College Park to your interested college list. This will open application questions that are specific to UMD, such as campus location and intended major.
  • The UMD specific Transfer Application will unlock only after you have completed all parts of your profile. You will know if you have any portions missing as the StandOut Admissions Network will direct you to any areas of concern where more information may be needed.
  • After the Educational Intent section of your transfer application, you will be able to select the location for which you would like to be considered for admission. Select: Shady Grove and  intended major: Biocomputational Engineering .
  • It is not required, but you have the option to select a major at College Park as well - keep in mind that Biocomputational Engineering is ONLY offered at the Universities at Shady Grove campus, located in Rockville, MD.

Most college applications have an essay component. Don’t let this portion of the application be the reason your application is on hold for being incomplete. While you will have a variety of prompts to select from for your essay, as a transfer student it is highly encouraged to write an essay response to the following question: Why are you interested in pursuing a degree in Biocomputational Engineering at this point in your academic career? The maximum length of this essay is 550 words or about 1 page single-spaced. Use this opportunity to tell the admissions team more about you, why this degree program would be a good fit for you, and what you have done to prepare yourself to get to this point. Each student has a unique journey and you are encouraged to add any details about your background and identity that are meaningful to your application, or obstacles that you have faced in your past that helped shape your future and bring you to this point in life.

When applying, you must submit transcripts from ALL previous institutions that you list as attended on your application. Your application will be considered incomplete until all official transcripts and your application essay are received. This means that you can not be offered admission to Biocomputational Engineering even if you meet the admissions criteria - don’t let this happen to you!

Through your StandOut Admissions Network application, you will have the option to submit your official transcripts electronically. This method is preferred since it will be the quickest way for your official records to be received and reviewed, also giving you the ability to track the status. If your transfer institution does not have an electronic submission option, please complete the request to send your official transcripts to:

University of Maryland

Office of Undergraduate Admissions

Mitchell Building

7999 Regents Dr.

College Park, MD 20742-5235, USA

Optional items which will not keep your application incomplete, but are welcome to be submitted include: one letter of recommendation, an activities and awards list, and/or resume. Letters of recommendation can be an excellent component of your portfolio. Consider requesting a letter from someone that can speak to your strengths and abilities and how your skills would make you a good fit in the Biocomputational Engineering degree program. Examples of good recommenders to approach for a letter might include current or previous instructors, teachers, or supervisors that you developed a connection with throughout your time as a student or employee.

Required Items:

A complete application to the University of Maryland at Shady Grove includes:

The following FAQs were selected from the UMD admissions pages and will be helpful to consider throughout your application process as a transfer student. A complete list of all FAQs can be found here: Application FAQs .

07

What essay questions will UMD use on the application?

Please refer to our essay questions page for the transfer application essay prompt. While you will have the option to answer a variety of prompts, transfer students are strongly encouraged to answer the general question: Why are you interested in this UMD degree program at this point in your academic career?

What are the main components that make up the StandOut Admissions Network platform?

There are three main components of the StandOut Admissions Network platform: The Application Portal, the Locker, and the Collaboration Space. UMD only requires applicants to utilize the Application Portal to submit their application. While students are encouraged to use the Locker and Collaboration Space to prepare for the admission process and get feedback from teachers and mentors, we do not require their use. UMD admissions staff will not review nor have access to the items in an individual student’s Locker.

Will UMD be reviewing or giving feedback on documents in my Locker?

No. The Locker is a private space for students to invite their academic advisors, teachers, and mentors to review documents prior to submitting them as part of their application. UMD admissions staff do not have access to a student's Locker and will not review application materials prior to their submission.

You can learn more about the Locker by watching this brief Locker overview video .

Do I need to complete the 9th through 12th grade course list?

No. At the top of the page, there will be a box you can select that states I have finished adding my courses . Please select that box and you will be able to bypass the High School Course section of the StandOut Admissions Network profile.

How will I know when my admission decision is available for review?

You will receive an email notifying you when your admission decision is ready on the StandOut Admissions Network platform. Follow the instructions listed in the email to view your admission decision online. For security purposes, please note that we cannot reveal admission decisions over the phone.

If you are offered admission to UMD, you will also receive a general welcome letter from our office in the mail a few days later.

What materials do we keep? How do I know if more materials are needed?

We keep a record of test scores and transcripts you submitted for previous applications. You must submit any new transcripts and/or test scores that were not available when you last applied.

What is the cost of tuition?

Although you are completing your degree at USG, you are still a UMD student! The tuition will be the same; however, fees are slightly less for students attending the USG campus. Visit the Office of Student Financial Aid website to review the estimated tuition and fees for UMD. Please be sure to note differential tuition costs for Engineering students.

When is the FAFSA deadline?

The deadline to submit the FAFSA is January 1. The school code for the University of Maryland is 002103. We encourage you to review this additional information on filling out the FAFSA .

What are the residency requirements for in-state tuition?

In order to qualify for in-state tuition, a student must prove that they (or the parent/guardian of a financially dependent applicant) is a financially contributing citizen of the state of Maryland and has been so for at least one full year (12 consecutive months). To demonstrate eligibility for Maryland residency , students must submit the residency questionnaire portion of the admission application. Residency can be determined by factors such as holding a Maryland driver’s license, paying Maryland taxes and proving that the primary reason for living in Maryland is not to attend the university.

Where can I check transfer course equivalency?

The UMD Transfer Course Database is the best place to explore transfer equivalencies. Once you enter your transfer institution you may search by course or view a complete listing of all accepted courses.

Hopefully this guide has served as a valuable resource to help you develop a seamless transfer pathway from your current institution into this exciting new Biocomputational Engineering degree program. We appreciate that every student has a unique academic journey and we want to hear about it! Set up a meeting with our BCE program coordinator to discuss your individual needs.

The University of Maryland does not have traditional supplemental essays, but it does have six required “complete this sentence” prompt. Your answers to these questions will need to be within 650 characters, but you’ll have plenty of space to reveal unique and distinctive parts of your personality to the admissions committee.

Make sure you give yourself enough time to craft thoughtful responses to these prompts, as you want to take full advantage of every opportunity you have to share something about yourself with the admissions officers. This unique kind of prompt presents a great opportunity to showcase something that might not be found elsewhere in your application.

Considering how competitive college admissions have become in just a few years, the more your responses stand out to admissions officers, the better your chances of admission will be.

University of Maryland Supplemental Essay Prompts

Prompt 1: If I could travel anywhere, I would go to… (650 characters)

Prompt 2: The most interesting fact I ever learned from research was… (650 characters)

Prompt 3: In addition to my major, my academic interests include… (650 characters)

Prompt 4: My favorite thing about last Thursday was… (650 characters)

Prompt 5: Something you might not know about me is… (650 characters)

Prompt 6: Because we know that diversity benefits the educational experience of all students, the University of Maryland values diversity in all of its many forms. This includes (but is not limited to) racial, socio-economic, gender, geographical, and sexual orientation. We are interested in hearing about your own individual life experiences. In a few sentences, will you please describe how you have learned, grown, been inspired or developed skills through one or more components of diversity. (650 characters)

If I could travel anywhere, I would go to… (650 characters)

This is a very straightforward prompt. A strong response will identify a place, and share a little bit about why you’ve picked this particular place.

Keep in mind that your response should be unique to you and should teach your reader something about your personality or interests. If your answer sounds like something any random person might say, you need to work on specificity. Here are some examples to show you what we’re talking about.

Generic response: “Rome, because I’ve always wanted to see the Colosseum.”

Personal response: “Rome, because I’ve studied Latin since middle school. My father, a classics professor, spent so many happy hours teaching me how to read the works of Ovid, Virgil, Cicero, and the other greats, in their original language. Whenever we happen to pass by old churches or college buildings, we stop to read their insignias and mottos, which are most often in Latin. All these fond memories make me feel deeply connected to the Greco-Roman world, and I think that seeing historic sites like the Colosseum in person would augment the reading I’ve done and enrich my understanding of classical antiquity.” (598 characters)

The first response is very generic because just about anybody you ask would probably love to see the Colosseum. The second response answers the crucial question— why? —which should be at the core of your response. Your particular reason for choosing the place you choose is where your personality and individuality will shine through.

Obviously, the source of specificity will depend on you and your personal experiences. If you haven’t studied Latin (or if you studied it but didn’t like it), this response clearly wouldn’t work for you. Think about what truly interests you, then narrow your thinking down to places that are integral to that interest. For example, if you’re really invested in country music and its history, you might be particularly interested in visiting Nashville, the epicenter of that genre.

Finally, remember that this place doesn’t have to be a city. You could also say something like “The Pro Football Hall of Fame” or “Abbey Road Studios.” In fact, you even have the freedom to be a little more creative with your place in history. You might want to travel to a different time period entirely. The prompt posits that you can travel anywhere , but doesn’t specify that it has to be somewhere modern. Perhaps you love early R&B and disco music. You might want to travel to Detroit in the 1960s, when Motown Records was beginning to dominate those genres.

A word of caution: If you are going to get extra creative and pick a different time period, be sure to avoid generic clichés. For example, writing that you want to travel to the future—to give your future self advice, or to drive a flying car, or to see where climate change has gone, etc.—is a cliché and won’t contribute much to your application.

In terms of location, you probably shouldn’t go much bigger than a city. Saying something like “The United Kingdom” or “China” may make you sound clueless, as countries are too large and diverse to understand in their entirety with just one trip. Aiming for something too broad detracts from the specificity that a strong response to this kind of essay requires.

Rather than settling for a generic response, think about the main reason you personally want to go to this place, and narrow your response from there. Instead of “The United Kingdom,” you could write “The Scottish Highlands,” and instead of “China,” you could write “The Great Wall of China.”

The most interesting fact I ever learned from research was… (650 characters)

If you haven’t done research before, don’t worry. Most high school students haven’t done a serious research project, and nowhere does the prompt say that the research has to be yours.

Your response should show your reader that you are informed about the research that goes on at places like the University of Maryland. Of course, research is not the only thing universities do, but being surrounded by cutting-edge researchers in a wide range of fields is an opportunity that is difficult to find outside of a university campus.

We don’t mean to say you have to cite some dense, obscure study on molecular neuroscience. If that’s what you’re interested in, great! As long as your response is genuine, your chosen topic is fair game. Don’t make the mistake of writing about some deep scientific research if that isn’t what piques your interest, but be careful not to write about something too trivial either.

That being said, research is done in a vast array of subjects, so there’s no pressure to write about any one topic over another. Below are some examples of facts from a variety of fields that would work just as well as something from a hardcore STEM study.

  • Consistent physical exercise throughout life correlates with better mental health in old age.
  • Sea turtles use magnetoreception to find the same breeding grounds each year.
  • The Egyptian pyramids have passages leading up from the burial chamber, which ancient Egyptians believed the dead pharaoh could climb through to join the gods in heaven.

Given the 650 characters you’re allotted, you should also share a short explanation of why you find this particular fact so interesting. For example, for the aforementioned sea turtle fact, you could write:

“[The most interesting fact I ever learned from research was…] sea turtles find the same breeding grounds each year with magnetoreception. Magnetoreception is a sense that allows turtles (and other animals) to perceive Earth’s magnetic field. Learning this fact made me truly appreciate nature’s diversity—turtles have an entire sense that we lack! This newfound appreciation created by one fact I just stumbled upon inspired me to embark on an exploratory journey that culminated in an internship at a local environmental center.” (467 characters, excluding the prompt’s characters)

Try to avoid picking a fact that is so long that you don’t have space to elaborate. 650 characters isn’t the largest amount of space, but simply stating your fact probably shouldn’t take up most of it. That being said, you don’t necessarily have to elaborate at a level as deep as the above example to have an excellent response. You may have a strong and thorough response with just 300 characters or so.

In addition to my major, my academic interests include… (650 characters)

The key phrase here is “in addition to my major.” Remember that you should use these supplemental prompts to share information about yourself that your reader cannot find elsewhere in your application.

So if your intended major is neuroscience, your answer here shouldn’t be “biology.” That is technically a different academic interest, but it doesn’t really tell your reader anything new. If they know you want to major in neuroscience, they can already safely assume you have at least some interest in biology.

Remember that your reader also has your high school transcript and activities list. Maybe math isn’t your intended major, but if you’ve taken AP math classes and done math camps during your high school summers, writing about math won’t be sharing something new with your reader. Your personal experiences already strongly indicate that you’re interested in math.

Your response also shouldn’t just be a list of other interests you have. A laundry list of interests won’t give the admissions committee any sense of why you’re interested in these things. The “why” is where your personality shines through. Without it, your reader won’t really have anything to take away from your response.

Now that we’ve covered what you shouldn’t do, let’s talk about how you should approach this prompt. As noted above, you want to pick an interest that is genuinely different from the things already seen in the rest of your application. As long as you’re honest, there’s no right or wrong way to do this. UMD wants to see that you’re academically inclined and intellectually curious, not that you’re only interested in one particular thing.

The second part of your response is the why . Say you’re a prospective history major and the other area you’re interested in is sports psychology. Your response might read something like this:

“[In addition to my major, my academic interests include…] sports psychology, because I was raised a diehard Miami Heat fan, and I’ve always wondered what helps some players thrive under pressure while others fold. I think that the field is interesting as it explores not only how players play, but also how they act in their personal lives in the spotlight. Even to those not interested in sports, the field is very useful in that its findings can be extrapolated and applied to society at large. After all, everyone wants to be able to perform at an optimal level.” (507 characters, excluding the prompt’s characters)

Alternatively, say you’re a prospective engineering major and you also have an interest in music theory. A strong response would be:

“[In addition to my major, my academic interests include…] music theory, because I’ve always wanted to know how movie and television composers use sound to enhance the emotional content of a scene. I’ve always been fascinated by the ways music is used to complement cinema. There are videos online in which a song is changed or removed from a scene, and something that simple can have a profound impact on the scene. I have been teaching myself guitar for four years, and even though I’m competent on a technical level, my theoretical understanding is lacking.” (501 characters, excluding the prompt’s characters)

These responses share interests that are not only not distinct from their respective majors, but that are also probably not discussed anywhere else in the application. It’s an unfortunate reality that college applications often capture only a thin slice of who you are while leaving out things like sports fandom, which may be a huge part of your personality and identity. If you can share one of those things here, your response will be all the better for it.

My favorite thing about last Thursday was… (650 characters)

Only you know what you did last Thursday, so the best advice we can give here is to not overthink your answer. Most people don’t do anything revolutionary on an average Thursday. UMD doesn’t expect you to have cured cancer on a normal day of the week. What they do expect is that you can engage with—and bring energy to—seemingly mundane situations. This is a useful skill that will help you thrive in college and beyond.

In order to address this prompt successfully, all you really have to do is describe the situation and give your reader some sense of what made it your favorite part of the day. Bear in mind that you don’t have to write about last Thursday literally. Think of something eventful that you took part in recently, but don’t feel restricted to the day mentioned in the prompt. UMD’s use of “last Thursday” is figurative. You can write about any average day that didn’t happen too long ago. No one is going to check that your event happened on a Thursday.

Here are some examples of weak and strong responses to this prompt.

Weak: “getting dinner with my friend.”

Strong: “having a picnic at dinnertime with my friend and watching the sunset. There’s nothing like munching on a DIY vegan charcuterie board and drinking sparkling cider at the golden hour. My friend and I grew up together and are as close as sisters. For years we did everything together, from shopping to cooking and from learning to swim to learning to drive. She and I used to hang out a lot before she moved, so I feel lucky whenever I get to spend quality time with her on an otherwise average day.” (495 characters)

For this particular prompt, even a few extra details—like those that are included in the strong example—can go a long way. Most people enjoy getting dinner with friends, but the strong response shows the reader why , for you personally, this particular dinner was so meaningful.

As we mentioned at the beginning of this post, 650 characters is more than you might assume. Take advantage of the space you have to make your response as personal as possible, but also don’t write more than you need to just to reach the limit. Based on the rest of your application, the admissions committee has some understanding of what you’re like in the classroom or on the basketball court. Now show them what you’re like on a regular old Thursday.

Something you might not know about me is… (650 characters)

A prompt this open-ended can be overwhelming at first. But as we advised with the previous prompt, don’t overthink your answer! This fun fact doesn’t have to be anything crazy or an attempt to impress the admissions committee—that’s what the rest of your application is for. Just share something unique to you that isn’t already discussed elsewhere in your application.

This last part about being unique is key—if your answer to Prompt 3 (the one about academic interests) was something about liking astronomy, your answer here shouldn’t be something about stargazing every night. Remember that you only have so many opportunities to share information about yourself with the admissions committee, so take advantage of each one.

That being said, you have free rein to write about pretty much anything! Below are some examples of potential topics you could respond to this prompt with. Your response also may look nothing like these, which is completely fine. We just want to get your mental gears turning by giving you a sense of what a good response might begin with.

Something you might not know about me is…

  • I can do a double backflip off a diving board.
  • I have every word to Taylor Swift’s album Reputation memorized.
  • For my eighteenth birthday, I went skydiving and passed out in the air.
  • I’ve won my fantasy football league three years in a row.
  • Every New Year’s Day, my dad cracks the ice on the pond near our house and my family does a polar plunge together.

Since you have a longer character count, you should elaborate on your fun fact, whatever it may be. For example, a hypothetical student might extend the above skydiving example and write something like this:

“[Something you might not know about me is…] for my eighteenth birthday, I went skydiving and passed out in the air. As a child, I saw a show about skydiving and became so infatuated with the idea that it became the one thing I had to try. My parents were not thrilled but agreed that I could try when I was 18. The time finally came, and the plane ascended with me finally on it. I was signed up for a tandem jump where I was tethered to an instructor. We jumped, and some combination of excitement, dread, and altitude made me pass out, so I missed most of the experience! By the time I came to, we were near the ground already, so I definitely need to try this experience again someday.” (644 characters, excluding the prompt’s characters)

You might not use all 650 characters to respond to this prompt, and that’s okay. Don’t try to reach the character limit and end up rambling or writing something confusing. For example, imagine if the backflip example above read like this:

“[Something you might not know about me is…] I can do a double backflip off a diving board. One time I was at the pool and kept making the lifeguard nervous every time I did it. It ended up being fine though, because it’s a skill I had gotten really good at by then.” (221 characters, excluding the prompt’s characters)

By the end of this response, a reader might not even remember what the original fun fact was, even though it’s only 221 characters.

Finally, the examples above hopefully show that your fun fact can be just that—fun. You don’t have to be super serious with every single supplemental essay prompt you come across. A more lighthearted response can actually be a good thing—college applications are generally quite dry, so it can be a good idea to remind your reader that you’re more than a GPA and a Common App essay you’ve revised 43 times.

Because we know that diversity benefits the educational experience of all students, the University of Maryland values diversity in all of its many forms. This includes (but is not limited to) racial, socio-economic, gender, geographical, and sexual orientation. We are interested in hearing about your own individual life experiences. In a few sentences, will you please describe how you have learned, grown, been inspired or developed skills through one or more components of diversity. (650 characters)

This is one instance of the very common diversity prompt . When colleges have a diversity prompt, they want to know about your own personal background and how it has influenced your worldview and perspectives.

Earlier this year, the United States Supreme Court struck down the use of affirmative action in college admissions. The ruling, however, still allows colleges to consider race on an individual basis, which is one reason many schools are now including diversity prompts as one of their supplemental essay prompts. If you feel that your racial background has impacted you significantly, this is the place to discuss that.

In general, such a common prompt can be approached with a traditional answer. You might consider answering this prompt with what you think is the most important part of your identity, then a small discussion about how that aspect of diversity is relevant to you and your general life experiences.

Such a response might be written about one of the following scenarios:

  • Using your fluency in another language to help members of a specific community.
  • Interpreting a text in class differently from your classmates because of your ethnic culture.
  • Having a friend of a different background who has changed your perspective on something important (this speaks to the “been inspired” part of the prompt).
  • Having an illness or disability that helps you view accessibility through a different lens than your peers.
  • Being part of a niche interest group/fandom and trying to represent the group faithfully when talking to people who aren’t members of it.

Simply listing things that generate diversity should be avoided. Sure, diversity includes different ethnicities/races, gender identities, sexual orientations, countries of origin, and languages, but writing that laundry list out doesn’t contribute much to your application.

Also, bear in mind that the traditional markers of diversity aren’t the only ones you can discuss. There are other aspects of identity that contribute to a diverse campus, including socioeconomic classes, hometowns, illnesses/disabilities, and even interests or hobbies.

Diversity encompasses all the aforementioned attributes, but you should strive for individuality and specificity in your response. This prompt, like all the others, is an opportunity to showcase your unique life perspective. You don’t want to waste this opportunity by writing down some bland dictionary definitions. Think of what diversity means to you and what you consider to be a particularly significant aspect of diversity. From there, think of personal anecdotes or stories about how that aspect of diversity has contributed to your growth or development as a person.

Though it isn't a golden ticket, a strong transfer essay may boost an applicant's odds of admission. (Getty Images)

There are as many reasons to transfer colleges as there are transfer students. But regardless of why someone wants to move to a new institution, the process for doing so usually requires an admissions essay.

Though it isn't a golden ticket, a strong transfer essay may boost an applicant's odds of admission.

In a 2018 National Association for College Admission Counseling survey , 41.5% of colleges polled said a transfer applicant's essay or writing sample is of either considerable or moderate importance in the admission decision.

A compelling, well-written transfer essay doesn't guarantee acceptance – many other factors are at play, such as an applicant's GPA. However, a strong essay can be a factor that helps move the odds in the applicant's favor, says Kathy Phillips, associate dean of undergraduate admissions at Duke University in North Carolina.

Know What Colleges Are Looking For In a Transfer Essay

Some schools have prospective transfer students use the Common App or the Coalition Application to apply. In addition to the main essay, students may be required to submit a second writing sample or respond to short-answer questions, though this isn't always the case. Prospective students can check a college's website for specific guidance regarding how to apply.

Whatever application method they use, prospective students should be aware that writing a transfer essay is not the same as writing a first-year college application essay, experts advise. First-year essays are more open-ended, says Niki Barron, associate dean of admission at Hamilton College in New York. When applying as first-years, prospective students can generally write about any experience, relationship or goal that has shaped who they are as people, she says.

This contrasts with transfer essays, where the focus is typically narrower. Barron says she thinks of transfer essays as more of a statement of purpose. "We're really looking to see students' reasons for wanting to transfer," she says.

Katie Fretwell, the recently retired dean of admission and financial aid at Amherst College in Massachusetts, says prospective transfer students are in a position to be a bit more reflective about their educational goals because of their additional year or years of experience post-high school. The essay helps admissions officers get a sense of whether an applicant has done "an appropriate level of soul-searching about the match," she says.

Transfer Essay Examples

Below are two transfer essays that helped students get into Duke and Amherst, respectively. Both institutions are very selective in transfer admissions. For fall 2018, Duke had a transfer acceptance rate of 8% and Amherst accepted 4% of its transfer applicants, according to U.S. News data.

2022-23 University of Maryland (UMD) Supplemental Essays – Prompts and Tips

August 8, 2022

With more than 50,000 applicants per year, you might think that the University of Maryland—College Park admissions committee would want to create a fast-paced assembly line for application reviews that is 99% based on the hard numbers like GPA and SAT scores. Yet, in addition to those important data points and the 650-word Common App essay, prospective Terrapins are also asked to complete six short “Complete this Sentence” essays as part of a genuinely holistic admissions process. We’ll explore the UMD supplemental essays.

(Want to learn more about How to Get Into the University of Maryland—College Park? Visit our blog entitled:  How to Get Into the University of Maryland: Admissions Data and Strategies  for all of the most recent admissions data as well as tips for gaining acceptance.)

As the University of Maryland becomes more selective—the acceptance rate was just 41% last year—applicants need to find ways to stand out from the competition. Fortunately, these six short answer essays provide just such an opportunity. Below are the UMD supplemental essays for the 2022-23 admissions cycle along with tips about how to address each one.

UMD Supplemental Essays – 2022-23 Prompts

Applicants must complete each of the following fill-in-the-blank responses in 200 characters (max) each:

1) If I could travel anywhere, I would go to… (300 characters)

There’s nothing wrong with simply naming a popular and/or exotic city if you wish, but don’t feel like that is your sole option with this essay. For example, you could travel to see a particular painting in an art gallery in Finland. You could travel through time to have a conversation with 19th century women’s right’s hero Elizabeth Cady Stanton. You could travel to Montana’s Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument to dig for dinosaur fossils alongside paleontologists. There is no shortage of ways to create an answer that contains more depth and meaning than simply saying “Paris, because it has beautiful architecture.”

2) The most interesting fact I ever learned from research was… (300 characters)

“But wait, I’m a 17/18-year-old who has done some experiments in Chemistry class, but I didn’t exactly win a Nobel Prize for learning how to safely use a Bunsen burner.” Applicants sometimes panic when they first read this question. However, the only expectation is that you cite a finding from someone else’s research that you found meaningful and enlightening. If you aren’t interested in the hard sciences, that’s perfectly fine! There is plenty of research that takes place outside of the STEM realm. Some ideas include:

  • The Environment

3) In addition to my major, my academic interests include… (300 characters)

Note the operative phrase here—“In addition to my major.” This is a chance to talk about one or more of your academic passions that are a) an extension of your major b) separate from your major or c) part of an interdisciplinary connection between your major and another discipline.

Of course, the second key word here is “academic” so you’ll want to make sure that the subject or subjects you wish to discuss are at least somewhat related to an area that could be studied in college. Use this prompt to showcase your diverse interests and intellectual passions and remember that “academic” in a college setting means more than just straight subjects like high school biology, geometry, or world history. In a collegiate setting, there are academic offerings in psychology, art, criminal justice, philosophy, artificial intelligence, and hundreds of other expansive and intriguing options so don’t feel overly-constrained!

4) My favorite thing about last Tuesday was… (300 characters)

You could look back at your Google Calendar or old texts in a quest to uncover whether last Tuesday was the day you reheated beef stroganoff for dinner or whether that was the night you ordered Uber Eats from Chipotle while studying for a Calculus final. However, there is another way to reimagine the question which removes “last Tuesday’s” random and limiting presence altogether. Instead, change the question to, “What is something that has happened to me recently that may have seemed small/everyday-ish, but truly mattered to me and communicates something about my character/personality?”

Think of this prompt as a chance to show off your skills of observation and reflection. Even in 160 characters, try to paint a picture of your appreciation for one of life’s small moments.

5) When I think of diversity, I think of.. (300 characters)

Try to avoid going the stale “the dictionary definition of diversity is…” route. Get personal and share what being a part of a diverse community means to you. Remember, diversity can apply to race, ethnicity, religion, socioeconomic status, and gender. Even diversity of thought and political ideology are on the table here. The goal is to sincerely communicate your feelings toward being a member of a diverse Terrapin campus. In fact, 47% of current undergraduates identify as students of color.

6) Something you might not know about me is… (300 characters)

During an admissions interview, the conversation between an applicant and an admissions officer has the chance to veer into more personal territory. During this exchange, commonalities are revealed and a human connection is forged. Unfortunately, the University of Maryland is not able to offer evaluative interviews. Therefore you should think of this question as a substitute chance to become more than just a name on an application. Whether you decide to pick something light and humorous or sincere and vulnerable (either is perfectly fine), aim for something that cannot be gleaned elsewhere in your application materials.

One example of what not to do would be to say, “I work as a camp counselor in the summer” if that was already listed in the Activities section.

How important are the UMD supplemental essays?

The essays at the University of Maryland are an “important” factor in their evaluation process, alongside class rank, recommendations, talent/ability, first-generation status, and state residency. This ranks higher than factors such as extracurricular activities, legacy status, race/ethnicity, or work experience.

Got rejected by UMD; TRANSFER to U Maryland College Park-Civil Eng

itspattycakes29 1 / 3   Jan 29, 2011   #1 An essay describing your past academic experiences and your reasons for wishing to transfer to Maryland at this point in your academic career is required. Students who have been out of school for several years, or who have a personal circumstance that affected their academic performance, may wish to address that situation in their essay. Your essay should be no more than 300 words. Twelve years ago on a rainy day, I began to wonder about my future career. I began to gaze at the ceiling. I only wanted to become one thing a engineer, to make the world a better place. Since kindergarden my mother emphasized higher education. I am the older of two siblings, and my mother told me to set an example for my other two siblings. University of Maryland has been my dream school for me since I was a child. Attending UMD will mean the world to me because I can pave my future, by getting into one of the best universities in the nation. I attended high school at Springbrook High School, and a very active student. I was never the most athletic nor talented student, but I did not use that as an excuse to not engage in extracurricular activities. Throughout my high school years I was a part of the spanish club, french club, forensics club, participated in fundraisers, and I also tutored students taking spanish. In my senior year of high school I only applied to two schools my dream school UMD and Montgomery College a secure back-up. When I got rejected from UMD I did not feel discouraged, I felt as if I had something to prove; being a successful academic student. I began attending Montgomery College in the fall of 2009 preparing myself for the opportunity to once again apply to UMD. I feel my future is very promising, and my academic journey is getting brighter. I can now be a successful academic student, and at the same time engage in extracurricular activities. I have accumulated a GPA of 3.09 and is improving significantly with 32 total credits. I have many reasons for transferring to Maryland. FIrst being it is close to home, and so I can take care of my mother and sister. Second, UMD is ranked being it has one of the most competitive programs in the nation. According to The 2010 U.S. News & World Report survey of undergraduate engineering programs ranks the Clark School 23rd in the nation. Once admitted to UMD, I plan to the apply to James A. Clark School Of Engineering and get a bachelors degree in Civil Engineering. My final reason for attending UMD is to give back to the university, and leave it a better place before I arrived their and leave my imprint.

faith91 1 / 1   Jan 29, 2011   #2 " I began to wonder about my future career. I began to gaze at the ceiling. I only wanted to become one thing a engineer," When I read the first sentence, I thought you didn't know what you want to be, then all the sudden you are so decided that you want to be an engineer! I would work on this sentence. I like your essay format, but Two things you need to work on First: Your vocabulary, some words are repeated Second: your reasoning for transferring are too short. Expand them a little explain them more. I think I have the same problem with mine. but i don't know how to fix it Please read mine and let me know what you think!!! Best of luck,

OP itspattycakes29 1 / 3   Jan 29, 2011   #3 Thanks for the feedback. I am over the limit in word count by about 90 words, but have no idea how to shorten it. What do you think I should reduce? What else should I talk about in reasons for transferring? I would be glad to look at your essay.

Help with transfer essay!

<p>I'm currently working on my transfer application for the University of Maryland, College Park. The question is simple "Why do you want to transfer here?" but I'm having trouble getting this essay off the ground. Does anyone have any suggestions on this kind of essay or know of any links where there is sample transfer essays so I can get an idea on how to structure an essay like this?</p>

<p>i had a similar question.. are you supposed to mention your current school and why u wanna get out and what the new college has that the old college simply doesnt?</p>

<p>For the question that says 'why do you want to transfer here' i would heavily emphasize maryland, not your old school. if you do anything for the common app, though, the general question is 'why do you want to transfer' and each school asks why do you want to transfer here, in which case you have to talk bout your old school. but, if says HERE specifically, try to minimize talking about your old school bc it will come across as negative.</p>

<p>If this essay is specifically for University of Maryland make sure you discuss why its the 'perfect' school for you. In my transfer essay I talked about the unique qualities the school I was applying to had and how my former school(the one I transferred from) didn't offer those advantages/opportunities.</p>

<p>Like walkinman07 said, try to structure most of the essay around University of Maryland and not trashing your current school. He's right, they don't want to hear someone being negative. But, pointing out that your current school doesn't have the things University of Maryland has doesn't have to come off as negative.</p>

The following sample essay was written by a student named David. He wrote the transfer essay below for the Common Transfer Application in response to the prompt, "Please provide a statement that addresses your reasons for transferring and the objectives you hope to achieve" (250 to 650 words). David is attempting to transfer from Amherst College to the University of Pennsylvania . As far as admissions standards go, this is a lateral move—both schools are extremely selective. His letter will need to be extremely strong for his transfer application to be successful.

Key Takeaways: A Winning Transfer Essay

  • Have a clear academic reason for your transfer. Personal reasons are fine, but academics need to come first.
  • Stay positive. Don't speak badly of your current school. Emphasize what you like about your target school, not what you dislike about your current school.
  • Be meticulous. Grammar, punctuation, and style matter. Show that you put time and care into your writing.

David's Transfer Application Essay

During the summer after my first year of college, I spent six weeks volunteering at an archaeological excavation in Hazor, site of the largest tel (mound) in Israel. My time in Hazor was not easy—wake-up came at 4:00 a.m., and by noontime temperatures were often in the 90s. The dig was sweaty, dusty, back-breaking work. I wore out two pairs of gloves and the knees in several pairs of khakis. Nevertheless, I loved every minute of my time in Israel. I met interesting people from around the world, worked with amazing students and faculty from Hebrew University, and became fascinated with the current efforts to create a portrait of life in the Canaanite period.
Upon my return to Amherst College for my sophomore year, I soon came to realize that the school does not offer the exact major I now hope to pursue. I'm majoring in anthropology, but the program at Amherst is almost entirely contemporary and sociological in its focus. More and more my interests are becoming archaeological and historical. When I visited Penn this fall, I was impressed by the breadth of offerings in anthropology and archaeology, and I absolutely loved your Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. Your broad approach to the field with emphases on understanding both the past and present has great appeal to me. By attending Penn, I hope to broaden and deepen my knowledge in anthropology, participate in more summer field work, volunteer at the museum, and eventually, go on to graduate school in archaeology.
My reasons for transferring are almost entirely academic. I have made many good friends at Amherst, and I have studied with some wonderful professors. However, I do have one non-academic reason for being interested in Penn. I originally applied to Amherst because it was comfortable—I come from a small town in Wisconsin, and Amherst felt like home. I'm now looking forward to pushing myself to experience places that aren't quite so familiar. The kibbutz at Kfar HaNassi was one such environment, and the urban environment of Philadelphia would be another.
As my transcript shows, I have done well at Amherst and I am convinced I can meet the academic challenges of Penn. I know I would grow at Penn, and your program in anthropology perfectly matches my academic interests and professional goals.

Before we even get to the critique of David's essay, it's important to put his transfer into context. David is attempting to transfer into an  Ivy League  school. Penn is not the most selective of the country's top universities, but the transfer acceptance rate is still around 6% (at Harvard and Stanford, that number is closer to 1%). David needs to approach this effort at transfer realistically — even with excellent grades and a stellar essay, his chances of success are far from guaranteed.

That said, he has many things going for him — he is coming from an equally demanding college where he has earned good grades, and he seems like the type of student who will certainly succeed at Penn. He will need strong  letters of recommendation  to round out his application.

Analysis of David's Transfer Essay

Now on to the essay... Let's break down the discussion of David's transfer essay into several categories.

The Reasons for Transfer

The strongest feature of David's essay is the focus. David is pleasingly specific in presenting his reasons for transferring. He knows exactly what he wants to study, and he has a clear understanding of what both Penn and Amherst have to offer him. David's description of his experience in Israel defines the focus of his essay, and he then connects that experience to his reasons for wanting to transfer. There are lots of bad reasons to transfer, but David's clear interest in studying anthropology and archaeology makes his motives seem both well thought-out and reasonable.

Many transfer applicants are trying to move to a new college because they are running away from some kind of bad experience, sometimes something academic, sometimes something more personal. David, however, clearly likes Amherst and is running towards something—an opportunity at Penn that better matches his newly discovered professional goals. This is a big positive factor for his application.

The Common Transfer Application instructions state that the essay needs to be at least 250 words. The maximum length is 650 words. David's essay comes in at around 380 words. It is tight and concise. He doesn't waste time talking about his disappointments with Amherst, nor does he put much effort into explaining the things that other parts of his application will cover such as grades and extracurricular involvement. He does have a lot more space left to elaborate, but in this case the letter gets the job done well with few words.

David gets the tone perfect, something that is difficult to do in a transfer essay. Let's face it—if you are transferring it is because there is something about your current school that you don't like. It's easy to be negative and critical of your classes, your professors, your college environment, and so on. It's also easy to come across as a whiner or an ungenerous and angry person who doesn't have the inner resources to make the most of one's circumstances. David avoids these pitfalls. His representation of Amherst is extremely positive. He praises the school while noting that the curricular offerings do not match his professional goals.

The Personality

Partly because of the tone discussed above, David comes across as a pleasant person, someone who the admissions folks are likely to want to have as part of their campus community. Moreover, David presents himself as someone who likes to push himself to grow. He is honest in his reasons for going to Amherst—the school seemed like a good "fit" given his small-town upbringing. It is, therefore, impressive to see him so actively working to expand his experiences beyond his provincial roots. David has clearly grown at Amherst, and he is looking forward to growing more at Penn.

The Writing

When applying to a place like Penn, the technical aspects of the writing need to be flawless. David's prose is clear, engaging and free of errors. If you struggle on this front, be sure to check out these  tips for improving your essay's style . And if grammar isn't your greatest strength, be sure to work through your essay with someone who does have strong grammar skills.

A Final Word on David's Transfer Essay

David's college transfer essay does exactly what an essay needs to do, and he includes the features of a strong transfer essay . He clearly articulates his reasons for transferring, and he does so in a positive and specific way. David presents himself as a serious student with clear academic and professional goals. We have little doubt that he has the skills and intellectual curiosity to succeed at Penn, and he has made a strong argument about why this particular transfer makes a lot of sense.

Odds are still against David's success given the competitive nature of Ivy League transfers, but he has strengthened his application with his essay.

University of Maryland 2023-24 Supplemental Essay Prompt Guide

Early Action:

University of Maryland 2023-24 Application Essay Question Explanations

The Requirements: 6 short answers of 650 characters

Supplemental Essay Type(s): Short Answer , Additional Information

“At the University of Maryland, we encourage our students to go beyond the classroom to engage in opportunities that further both their academic and personal growth.”

The University of Maryland application is all about budgeting your words and energy. With a list of rapidfire short answer questions at the heart of this supplement, prepare to make every character count!

To tell us more about yourself, please complete the following sentences using only the space provided. (650 characters)

* if i could travel anywhere, i would go to…, * the most interesting fact i ever learned from research was…, * in addition to my major, my academic interests include…, * my favorite thing about last thursday was…, * something you might not know about me is…, * because we know that diversity benefits the educational experience of all students, the university of maryland values diversity in all of its many forms.  this includes (but is not limited to) racial, socio-economic, gender, geographical, and sexual orientation.  we are interested in hearing about your own individual life experiences.  in a few sentences, will you please describe how you have learned, grown, been inspired or developed skills through one or more components of diversity..

The key to nailing this section is brainstorming. When you see fill-in-the-blanks like these, it’s easy to assume that admissions is looking for a specific response, but (surprise!) they’re not. To avoid falling into this trap, free your mind and spend a few minutes jotting down as many answers as you can think of for each prompt. Literally set a timer and force yourself to keep your pencil moving (or fingers typing) for the entire time. No idea is too silly! The more you go with your gut, the more likely you are to come up with a unique and truly personal answer, and in the end, that’s really what admissions is looking for. Short answers like these present a great opportunity for you to show off your creativity, ingenuity, and sense of humor. When curating your brainstormed ideas, aim for breadth and variety. If you’ve always wanted to travel to Easter Island to measure the moai (🗿) and perform engineering experiments, then your interesting fact had better not be located anywhere near the Pacific Ocean. As with any other essay type, each micro answer should tell admissions something new about you.

As a college student pursuing a bachelor’s degree at the University of Maryland, the Maryland Transfer Advantage Program is an outstanding opportunity for me. Why Should I Pay Anyone to Write My Essay?

If you’re suddenly wondering, “Can someone do my paper for me?”, there’s likely a very good reason for that. After all, college is an eye-opening experience for most students. Not only is it your first attempt at independent life free from parents’ oversight, but it’s also a completely new level of academic requirements and independent study many aren’t ready for.

And if you’re an overachiever or a perfectionist, keeping up with all the classes, assignments, extracurriculars, and side gigs will keep you up most nights. You will soon forget about your plans to discover the party scene, visit your parents every other weekend, or find your soulmate on campus. If you try to stay on top of all your responsibilities, you’ll likely burn out or suffer an anxiety attack sooner rather than later.

So don’t feel bad if your thoughts go from “Can someone write my paper?” to “Write me a paper asap!” within the first few weeks of the college term. You’re not alone, and it’s perfectly normal to struggle in a new environment and buckle under the weight of elevated expectations.

Luckily, you don’t have to suffer in silence or give up on your dream of a college degree. Instead, you can seek help. And nowadays, it’s as easy as typing “Make an essay for me” in live chat.

Why Should I Choose Write Paper For Me As My School Assistant?

A quick Google search will unearth dozens of do-my-paper services, adding to your stress, instead of alleviating it. But unfortunately, you cannot trust the first company you find, tell the writers “Write a paper for me”, and hope for the best. Although you may be lucky enough to stumble upon a reliable company by accident, choosing a trustworthy service requires some research.

We suggest you look for these staples of a solid writing service WritePaperForMe has in spades:

  • Academic writers with proven experience in your major. For instance, our write my paper service employs hundreds of experts across the most popular majors, so we can handle anything from Anatomy to Zoology.
  • Thorough anti-plagiarism protocols. In our experience, a combination of writer training, strict citation procedures, and a mandatory plagiarism check ensure the best results for our clients.
  • Round-the-clock access to human support agents. With our 24/7 support, you don’t have to wait for office hours to ask “Can you do my paper for me?”. You can get answers to all your questions, paper progress updates, and other help whenever you need it.
  • Free and frictionless revision process. Although our writers do their best to meet your expectations on the first try, we guarantee free revisions and make the revision process easy and painless for everyone involved.
  • Detailed confidentiality terms that protect your personal and financial data. We adhere to local and international data protection regulations and keep the specifics of your order private, so your school can never learn about your paper from us.
  • Affordable rates that ensure the best value for money. We realize how tight money can be for students, so we keep our prices as low as possible while still keeping the writers happy and motivated.

If you want to make the most of these and other benefits, start by typing “Help me write my essay” in live chat, and we’ll see what we can do for you.

We Handle Any Paper Writing Task for High School, College, and Grad School

One of the most common complaints when it comes to paper writing is a poor writing style, unsuitable for a specific academic level. Fortunately, that never happens to our customers, as we carefully match your requirements with our writers’ expertise levels while keeping the rates affordable.

For example, when you come to us asking for a college essay, we’ll round up our experts with Bachelor’s degrees and above. Similarly, if you want us to handle MBA coursework, we’ll match you with a writer who already has their Master’s degree. And even doctorate papers, like thesis proposals or research papers, are not beyond our expertise, as our talent pool includes a fair share of PhDs.

So if you think our order form is too complex and your order doesn’t need to go beyond “Write essay for me,” we ask for your patience. After all, the more details you provide, starting with your academic level, the better we’ll be able to help you.

“Type an Essay for Me” Is Not the Only Service We Offer

You’ve probably found our site when you were looking to pay someone to write your essay. And we will happily take over argumentative, persuasive, narrative, and creative pieces for you. However, the do-my-paper service is not your only option. We have plenty of offers for students who are unwilling to let others take over their work completely. Here are a few viable suggestions that can make your college writing much easier:

  • Editing works wonders for students unwilling to admit, “I need someone to write papers for me,” and looking to improve their writing style. Choose this service if you want actionable suggestions that will instantly improve your chances of getting a higher grade.
  • Proofreading goes beyond the standard spellcheck and weeds out the smallest grammar, spelling, and style errors. Your professors will appreciate a flawless piece of writing without a single typo.
  • Formatting doesn’t have to be dull and time-consuming, especially when your reference list exceeds a few dozen sources. If you let our experts take over, you’ll save yourself hours and submit a picture-perfect paper.
  • Paraphrasing is the best choice for fast results when you already have a flawless piece but need it to pass a plagiarism check the second time. Just say, “Help me write my paper based on this sample,” and our writers will deliver a perfect replica, capable of fooling Turnitin.

We Employ Expert Academics to Make Your “Write My Paper” Order Perfect

Whether you’re an English or a STEM major, you’re probably wondering, “Who can write essay for me?” or “Why should I pay someone to write my paper for me when I know nothing about them?” And you’re absolutely right about asking these questions. After all, thousands of freelancers offer to write essay online, but you can’t know who to trust with your grades and record. To make your life easier, we take over the screening tasks to ensure only the best are hired and have the privilege to write an essay for you.

To get on our team, each writer must:

  • Write a paper on a topic of our choosing within 24 hours to demonstrate research and writing skills.
  • Pass a timed English proficiency test with and score 80+ points.

And once hired, writers must keep their customer feedback rating high. Those who get negative comments don’t stay on our team for long.

Although our hiring approach may seem harsh, it’s proven its efficiency for writers and students. And we urge you to give our experts a chance to prove they’re as good at writing papers as we claim they are.

We Deliver Every “Write My Paper” Order on Time

Timing is critical in the college papers market. An hour’s delay can make your submission late and cause you to fail the class. And a drawn-out revision may fry your last nerve and end in a breakdown.

To guarantee your every “write papers for me” order arrives in your inbox on time, we use an efficient communication and time-management approach and train our writers, editors, and proofreaders in beating procrastination and writer’s block.

Still, we urge you to be realistic in your expectations. Research alone would usually take several hours, and writing and finishing touches need time, too. So please give our experts enough time to work on your paper and give yourself enough leeway for a quick review and revision.

How can I pay someone to write a paper for me? What are your payment methods??

So you don’t have to worry and ruminate, “Is it safe to pay someone for writing my papers online?” After all, it’s as safe as getting your next coffee batch on Amazon or paying for your Netflix subscription.

How fast can you write my essay for me?

“Write my essay ASAP!” and “Write my essay, and I need it yesterday!” are two of the most common requests we get from college students. And although we can’t trick time and only have 24 hours in our days, we can deliver short pieces in 6 hours and longer assignments—within a day. As long as you don’t come asking “Write my research paper in six hours,” and are realistic about your expectations, our experts should be able to handle the tightest deadlines. But please account for a preview and revisions not to miss your submission deadline.

Can I talk to the person who’ll do my essay for me?

Of course, you can. We realize you’re probably thinking, “When I pay someone to write my paper, I want to have a direct line to this person.” So all you need to do is log into your account and find the chat tab to ask your questions or provide comments. But please remember that writers may not be available 24/7, as they have research and writing to take care of. If you’re thinking “I want round-the-clock access with the person I hired to write an essay for me,” you’re unlikely to find a writing service that will satisfy your needs.

Can you write my essay for me cheap?

Sure, our rates start as low as $6.99. Despite inflation and global crises, we keep our prices student-friendly. So anyone who comes asking, “write my paper for cheap” or “write my term paper without breaking the bank” will feel welcome and safe in the knowledge they’ll get the best value for money. At the same time, we urge you to beware of online frauds promising free results, as every “Write my research paper for me for free” may end in a scam.

Is it legal to use your service and pay someone to write my paper?

Yes, it is legal. Whether you’re carefully considering “Can someone do my paper for me?” in the privacy of your own mind or clamoring for assistance with the bold demands of “Write my paper for me now!”, you’re in the clear until you submit the paper you purchase for grading under your name. Even that isn’t illegal in most countries, though it is frowned upon in most schools. It’s up to you to decide what to do with the paper you get after we fulfill your order.

Can I pay someone to do my essay after it’s done?

Sadly, no. In an ideal world of perfectly honest people, you’d say, “I need help write my research paper”, and we’d have it ready for you for free and rely on your generosity. In the real world, our writers, editors, and support managers are real people who like to have a roof over their heads and meals on their tables. Our refund policy keeps you safe, but only your upfront payment protects our writers from scams. So whenever you ask, “Can you write my essay cheap?”, we say, “Sure”, but we ask you to cover the cost first.

Who will write my paper for me? How do I know they’re qualified to handle it?

Every writer on our team holds a degree in one or more majors, possesses years of academic writing experience, and has a solid reputation among our clients. You can be sure that whenever you run asking, “Write essay for me”, we’ll match you with an expert best suited to handling your academic level, class, and topic. Be safe in the knowledge that we only hire seasoned academics to write papers for you.

How do I choose the best writer to write my paper for me?

You can select a specific expert to deal with your “write my essay” issue or pick a top or pro-level writer. Although either of these options will add to the bottom line, you won’t have to wonder, “Who will write my essay?”. We recommend selecting one of our premium experts for critical assignments that need a special touch to score top grades and improve your class ranking or GPA. Contact our support team to ask, “Can someone write my paper for me with top results?” to learn more about writer options.

How do I know if you’ll make my essay original?

Your every “write my essay” order goes through a plagiarism checker to guarantee originality. After all, our writers know “write my paper” means crafting an original piece from scratch, not rewriting a stale sample found online. But if you want further proof, you’re welcome to order an official plagiarism report with a similarity percentage. All it takes is checking the box in the order form or asking a support agent to add it to the bottom line when you come asking, “I need you to write an essay for me.”

How can I lower the price when ordering an assignment?

Although we keep our online paper help rates as low as possible, you can play around with the order parameters to lower the price. For example, instead of crying, “I need you to write my essay in 12 hours”, set the deadline for two weeks, and your bottom line will be much more affordable. You can also wait for a seasonal promotion with discounts of up to 15% if you’re thinking, “I’m in no hurry to pay someone to write my essay.”

What do I do if you write my paper for me, and I don’t like it?

You can get a revision or a refund, depending on how much your “write my essay for me” order went off track. We know when you pay someone to write your paper you expect the best results, and we strive to follow every instruction to a T when we write a paper for you, but miscommunication can occur. In this case, don’t be shy about requesting a free revision or a new writer to rework your assignment. And if you feel the paper is unsalvageable, you may be liable for a partial or full refund.

How do I know you’ve finished writing my paper?

We’ll notify you via email the moment the writer uploads the first draft for your revision. You can then preview it and approve the piece to download an editable file or get it sent for a revision round with your comments about necessary corrections. Besides, you can always request a progress update from your writer or a support manager. Just ask them, “Any progress since I hired you to write my essay for me?”. As you see, you don’t need to fret, thinking, “How will I know when you write my essay, and it’s ready?”

What are you waiting for?
