Sample Answer 2

In this modern era of crass commercialisation, finding a quiet place is a daunting task. However, I am blessed to have a place where can I find peace and tranquillity.

I have farmland in the hinterland of my city. It is far away from the hustle and bustle of the city. That is why I get the much needed peace and tranquility over there.

During my childhood, my dad purchased this farmland to grow organic vegetables for our family.

How often do you go there?

Every weekend I visit this place to break the monotony of the urban lifestyle.

What do you do there?

Whenever I go there, I indulge in a myriad of activities. Firstly I spend some time doing farming. Although I am not an expert at it, I am well versed with the basics. During this activity, I get into a state of flow, and my time passes quickly.

Moreover, during summers, when there is scorching heat, I bathe in the water thrown by the tubewell. During this pursuit, I get much-needed relief from the relentless heat.

Apart from this, I love to study over there. The farmland I have is in a clean and pristine place, with no noise pollution. Because no vehicles ply near to this place. Furthermore, this place is far away from the bus stand or railway station. The only sound I hear is the chirping of the birds. Due to this reason, the study work done there is highly productive. Whenever I feel like I am lagging in my study, I visit this place to cover up.

Sample Answer 3

Being a person who loves solitude, I always feel blessed when I get time to relax in a quiet place.

The place is a studio near my residence.

How did you know it?

This studio belongs to Mr Masha Ali, a renowned Punjabi singer. He is my bosom friend and my neighbour too. He had opened it two years back and invited me as a guest at the time of its inauguration.

It’s a recording studio, so it’s remain occupied six days a week. However, every Sunday, there is a break. I have made it a part of my routine to visit this place every Sunday.

Being a voracious reader, I read interesting books and novels over there.

Whenever I visit this place, I get serenity. There is no denying this conviction that due to rampant urbanisation, the cities have become overcrowded. The number of vehicles plying on the roads has increased significantly.

In public places, most people talk on their mobile phones.

Due to these reasons, quietness is missing from our lives.

To experience calmness, I visit this place because it has pin-drop silence.

Being a recording studio it is designed in a way that neither the outside noise comes in nor the inside voice goes out.

When I read books at this place, I get into a state of flow. I finish one book in two sittings.

The silence offered by this place helps me to concentrate on my studies.

Due to these reasons, I am a regular visitor to this place.

Sample Answer 4

Introduction:

Being a voracious reader, I am always in search of a quiet place to read.

Recently, I found a place conducive to reading because of the serenity inside it.

The place is the library near my residence. It’s newly opened.

My mathematics teacher recommended this place to me.

Every day, I spend 5-6 hours at this place.

Initially, the primary purpose of going to this place was self-study. However, with time I have widened my friend circle. So after finishing my studies, I engage in a group discussion. Apart from this, I eat mouth-watering delicacies in the canteen.

The prominent reason for liking this place is the calmness offered by it.

Due to fierce competition these days, students need to carve out a niche for themself to gain success. And to achieve this aim, they need to work with determination, dedication and discipline.

For such a high-level preparation, a calm place is a must.

And I get the much-needed calmness and composure at this place. Because the management is strict and they allow only serious readers to occupy the space. All those people who engage in unnecessary gossips do not get permission to sit here.

This library is always full of ardent readers who always remain in a state of flow while studying. Upon watching them, I also get motivated.

In the last two months, there is a paradigm shift in my knowledge. Due to this reason, I have achieved higher grades in my recent tests.

Every human being requires a quiet place to spend some time occasionally, driven by an innate desire for savoring solitude and tranquility, minus the humdrum of daily life. My philosophies are more attuned to these lines of thought. My go-to place is the little patch of undisturbed green beside a small pond in our locality. Amidst the concrete jungle, this oasis still exists, for which I feel blessed. This is where I retreat whenever I wish to spend some time alone with my thoughts and far away from the hustle and bustle of the city. There is a little bench here where I sit and listen to music.

Sometimes, I channel my pent-up feelings into creating sketches of the scenery around me. Sometimes I sit here just to gather my thoughts, especially when I have to take a big decision. The place has grown on me, and I have spent hours contemplating here. My family members know about my preferred quiet place near home, and they gracefully give me the space I desire, minus interruptions.

I find myself more creative and collected when I am at this spot. It helps me get away from distractions and serves as a regular respite from the sundry affairs of life. As Patricia Highsmith rightly said, “My imagination functions much better when I don’t have to speak to people.” An occasional passer-by is all I get at times. I genuinely enjoy my little hideout in the heart of the city and feel grateful for how it rejuvenates me both inside and out.

Describe A Quiet Place You Like To Spend Time In: Sample 2

Being a man of science, I am more inclined toward quieter places, enabling me to focus and develop my theories. I firmly believe in the peerless words of Aldous Huxley, who stated that “the more powerful and original a mind, the more it will be inclined towards the religion of solitude.” I am devoted to my passion which has now become my profession. Hence, I have chosen an attic on the top floor as my study, research, and relaxation area.

The room contains shelves of neatly stacked books and periodicals, my laboratory and research equipment, my computer and other digital equipment, and my guitar and music system for de-stressing once in a while. The best part is that I can always take a break and take a quick stroll on the adjoining terrace of my home. This is a great stress-buster, especially when I am awake in the wee hours, working on experiments and research papers. This room reflects my personality and preferences.

I rarely allow others, including my family members, into my preferred quiet place at home. They are also supportive enough to give me the space I need for analytical thinking. I also retreat to my room whenever I wish to practice my guitar skills, sing a song, blast some music, or simply think about something. It is my happy place and a room that gives me comfort. I have made my biggest life decisions here while having worked on some of my most radical theories. If I ever have to leave my city, I will miss my quiet place the most.

Describe a Quiet Place You Like to Spend Your Time In

Describe a quiet place you like to spend your time in.

  • Where is it?
  • How did you know it?
  • How often do you go there?
  • What do you do there?
  • And explain why you like the place.

Sample 1:- Describe a quiet place you like to spend your time in.

Nestled amidst the serene embrace of nature, my favourite quiet place is a small, secluded spot near the bank of a gently meandering river located a short distance from my hometown. This haven of tranquillity is enveloped in a lush tapestry of greenery, which serves as the perfect backdrop for introspection and relaxation. I first discovered this idyllic spot several years ago during a leisurely walk, and since then, I have been captivated by its charm.

On average, I visit this peaceful haven at least once a week, often during the weekend. The calming atmosphere of this place allows me to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life, affording me the opportunity to recharge my batteries, both physically and mentally. In a world that seems to be perpetually moving at breakneck speed, the opportunity to slow down, even for a short while, is a luxury that I truly cherish.

While spending time in this tranquil haven, I engage in a variety of activities that help me unwind and reconnect with myself. Sometimes, I choose to read a book, the soft rustling of the leaves providing a gentle soundtrack to the words on the page. On other occasions, I may simply sit and meditate, allowing the soothing babble of the river to wash away my thoughts and centre my mind. I also find this spot to be an excellent source of inspiration for my writing and creative pursuits, as the stillness of the environment allows my imagination to run free.

What makes this place so special to me is the sense of peace and calm that it instils within me. The natural beauty of the surroundings serves as a reminder of the simpler joys in life, and the absence of any external distractions allows me to be fully present at the moment. Moreover, the unspoiled charm of this secluded spot provides a much-needed respite from the digital world, enabling me to disconnect from technology and reconnect with myself and nature.

In conclusion, my favourite quiet place is a hidden gem that offers me solace and rejuvenation amidst the chaos of everyday life. The natural splendour and serenity of this riverside haven make it an invaluable sanctuary where I can find refuge, inspiration, and personal growth. It serves as a constant reminder that, despite the whirlwind of our busy lives, there are still pockets of tranquillity waiting to be discovered and cherished.

Sample 2:- Describe a quiet place you like to spend your time in.

The quiet place I like to spend my time in is a small cabin in the woods. It’s about an hour from my house, and it’s located on a quiet lake. The cabin is owned by my parents, and they’ve been letting me use it ever since I was a kid.

I first found out about the cabin when I was about ten years old. My parents were going on a weekend trip, and they asked me if I wanted to stay with my grandparents. I said no, and I asked if I could stay at the cabin instead. They said yes, and I was so excited!

I’ve been going to the cabin every summer since then. It’s my favourite place in the world. The cabin is small and cosy, and it has everything I need. There’s a kitchen, a living room, a bedroom, and a bathroom. There’s also a deck that overlooks the lake.

I love spending time at the cabin because it’s so peaceful and quiet. There’s no TV or internet, and there’s no cell phone reception. I can just relax and enjoy the sounds of nature. I love to go for walks in the woods, swim in the lake, and read books on the deck.

The cabin is also a great place to connect with my family. We usually spend a few days at the cabin together every summer. We cook meals together, play games, and just enjoy each other’s company. A cabin is a special place for us, and we’re all grateful to have it.

If you’re looking for a quiet place to relax and escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, I highly recommend finding a cabin in the woods. It’s the perfect place to reconnect with nature and with the people you love.

Follow-Up Questions Describe a quiet place you like to spend your time in.

Question 1:- is it hard to find quiet places in cities.

Answer – Finding quiet places in cities can be a challenging task. Cities are often crowded, noisy, and bustling with activity, making it difficult to find a peaceful and calm environment. Moreover, the prevalence of traffic, construction, and other noise pollution sources can further exacerbate the issue. Nevertheless, many cities have parks, gardens, and other green spaces that provide a respite from the noise and chaos of urban life. Additionally, public libraries, museums, and art galleries can also offer a serene and quiet atmosphere for those seeking solitude and tranquillity.

Question 2:- Why is it quieter in the countryside?

Answer – The countryside is typically quieter than urban areas because of the lower population density and a lack of industrial activity. Unlike the hustle and bustle of urban life, rural areas are more tranquil, with fewer people and less traffic. This reduced activity creates less noise pollution, which makes it easier to hear the sounds of nature. The countryside environment, such as forests, fields, and rivers, adds to the quietness and creates a natural ambience. Additionally, there is less electronic noise from devices, such as cell phones, computers, and TVs, which can further reduce noise pollution. Overall, the countryside’s peaceful atmosphere is a result of the low population and human activity levels.

Question 3:- Why do people go to quiet places?

Answer – People go to quiet places for various reasons, such as seeking a break from the hustle and bustle of urban life, finding solitude, and improving their physical health. Quiet places can offer a respite from the noise and chaos of urban areas, providing a serene and peaceful environment. They can also help individuals find solitude and privacy to engage in activities such as reading, writing, or reflecting. Additionally, quiet places in nature can provide opportunities for physical exercise and relaxation, such as hiking or yoga. The quiet and tranquil environment can also help reduce stress levels and improve mental clarity. Overall, people seek out quiet places to find peace and solitude and improve their overall health and well-being.

Question 4:- Compared with young people, do old people prefer to live in quiet places?

Answer – Older people may have a greater preference for living in quiet places compared to younger people. As individuals age, their hearing can decline, making loud noises more uncomfortable and difficult to tolerate. Additionally, older people may value tranquillity more highly due to retirement and reduced social obligations. Older adults may also have more time to spend in quiet places, such as parks, gardens, and libraries. Nevertheless, individual preferences can vary widely, and some older adults may prefer more lively and bustling environments. Overall, age can be a factor in an individual’s preference for quiet places, but it is not the only determining factor.

Question 5:- Why do some people not like quiet places?

Answer – Some people may not like quiet places because they associate silence with loneliness or isolation. They may feel uncomfortable when alone with their thoughts or have a fear of missing out on social interactions. Additionally, people who are used to constant stimulation and activity may find quiet places boring or unstimulating. Some individuals may also have a condition called hyperacusis, where they are extremely sensitive to noise, making silence uncomfortable or even painful for them. Ultimately, individual preferences, experiences, and underlying health conditions can all contribute to an individual’s discomfort in quiet places.

Question 6:- Do you know other quiet places?

Answer – Yes, some examples of other quiet places include libraries, art galleries, museums, gardens, parks, and forests. Libraries are traditionally quiet places designed for reading, studying, and contemplation. Art galleries and museums offer a tranquil environment to appreciate art and cultural exhibits. Gardens and parks provide a natural and peaceful atmosphere to relax and connect with nature. Forests can offer a serene escape from urban life and a chance to hike, meditate, or enjoy quiet contemplation. Additionally, some hotels and retreat centres specialize in offering a peaceful and quiet environment to help guests relax and rejuvenate.

Question 7:- Do you need a quiet place when you are working?

Answer – I personally prefer to work in a quiet place when studying or doing tasks that require concentration. I find that working in a peaceful environment helps me to minimize distractions and stay focused on my work. However, I understand that some individuals may prefer a more dynamic or interactive environment when working, such as a coworking space or a bustling coffee shop, as they find it more stimulating and energizing. Ultimately, the need for a quiet place when working depends on the individual’s preferences and work style, as well as the nature of the task at hand.

Question 8:- Why do people like to spend time in quiet places?

Answer – People like to spend time in quiet places for various reasons. Quiet places provide an escape from the noise and chaos of daily life and offer a chance to relax and recharge. Such environments can be calming and soothing, promoting mental well-being and reducing stress levels. They also offer an opportunity for introspection and reflection, providing a space for individuals to contemplate and process their thoughts and emotions. Quiet places can be beneficial for enhancing creativity, productivity, and problem-solving skills, allowing individuals to focus and concentrate better on their tasks. Ultimately, quiet places can help individuals feel more centred and connected to themselves, improving their overall quality of life.

Question 9:- Do you know anyone who likes noise?

Answer – Yes, I know a few people who like noise. For example, my uncle works in a factory where there are loud machines and equipment. He enjoys the noise of the machines as it helps him focus on his work and drown out distractions. Similarly, my friend enjoys going to live music concerts where the noise level is high, as it makes the experience more exciting and enjoyable for her. While some people prefer quiet environments to work or relax, others enjoy the stimulation and energy that noise can bring. Follow us on Facebook

Describe a Quiet Place: IELTS Cue Card Sample Topic Questions and Answers

In IELTS, the Speaking Module is a module that the student does not confide in. The primary reason behind it is that many students are afraid of what kind of question they can be asked by the examiner. This is why they find it difficult to do this because for a while they need to think about the answer and they do not have time to think in the middle of the answer.

Write the keywords simply, which can be well imprinted on your head. But don’t write them too slowly and aim to cover all of the questions in the cue card with simple points. Write keywords rather than random terms in bullet points. In order to get better ideas, start imagining the situation or building a scene in your head.

Let discuss a topic of IELTS Cue Card task “Describe  a Quiet Place” to give you a clear view of the format and questions

IELTS Exam Cue Card Topics Questions

You must say these:

  • Where is that place?
  • How often do you go to that place?
  • What do you do in that place?
  • Why do you like that place

IELTS Exam Cue Card Topic Sample One- Describe a Quiet Place

Ielts exam cue card topic sample part one.

I’ve visited a lot of places, but I want to speak about a quiet spot I’ve visited. Rather than anything else, quiet environments inspire me. In my view, Gurudwara Sahib is a very calm and peaceful place, rather than any place, since in Gurudwara Sahib, all people, as well as the Sikhs, feel very good and at ease.

IELTS Exam Cue Card Topic Sample Part Two

I mostly like the Gurudwara Sahib, located near my hometown in “Nanaksar” village, and I have great confidence in it. I want to go there at all times, but every Sunday in particular. We visit there and pray for the goodness of all persons and my family to “Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji” because they are the only ones who embrace my every request and fill my lap with love and happiness.

IELTS Exam Cue Card Topic Sample Part Three

Since this Gurudwara Sahib spread the concepts of “Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji,” who was the first Sikh guru, I like going there. It’s like a visit to heaven when I visit that place. I feel very content and also have a quiet moment. Poor people still support the head of this Gurudwara Sahib. Until the end of my days, I’ll be moving there.

IELTS Exam Cue Card Topic Sample Two- Describe a Quiet Place

If you find a safe way to alleviate tension and boredom, waking up to a daily nine to five work and coping with all sorts of irksome challenges every day would certainly make you crazy someday. Luckily, I’ve got a solution of my own, an escape to Alberta, a mountainous place where I can’t see any visitors that I take every once in a while, anytime life makes me have a rough time.

Alberta is about 200 km northeast of my town and about 1,500 m above sea level, which is known for its cold weather during the year. It’s a favourite spot for some people searching for a relaxing place to get away from their tight schedules, since it is not a popular tourist attraction. Since it’s not quite far from the centre of the city, just half an hour by plane, I go there very frequently, maybe four times a year. And depending on what events I partake in, every trip holds its own fascination.

Normally, to burn up my energy and enjoy the sensation of sweat soaking my clothes and being physically exhausted, I would go trekking in the wild. This makes me feel alive again and rejuvenated. Sometimes, extreme sports like water sliding or cliff jumping are my favourites when I feel like pushing myself to the limit. Such kinds of entertainment require a good spirit of health and adventure, so they’re not for everyone.Every time I visit it, I usually spend 3 days in Alberta, and although it’s only a short time, I feel some of the burdens I have on my shoulder are swept away and I’m ready to face whatever comes next.

Describe a quiet place you like.

You should say :

  • where it is
  • how often you go there
  • what you do there
  • why you like this place

Sample Answer 1

Here is the sample for “Describe a quiet place you like” topic:

Who doesn’t love a quiet, tranquil place? I am attracted to such areas as they help me relax and refresh my mind and concentrate on my work in a better way. However, these days, it has become tougher to discover such places because of urbanization. Ofcourse, there are libraries. But they only allow people to work and not rest. Fortunately, I found such a place that is calm, lets you study/work and rest as well.

I live in a locality that is nearby the bus stand. So, it would be absurd to say that my house is quiet all the time. There is a consistent hustle and bustle of passengers and buses. Every day, my brother spends hours altogether in a nearby library to study. However, I don’t prefer going there as I would have to be sitting in one position the entire time. My father likes investing his money in property. So, a few years back, he bought a farmhouse that is located on the outskirts of the city – almost 20 kms away from my house. I absolutely love this place for its charm and quietness.

So, in pursuit of finding peace, I visit this farmhouse at least twice a month. I engage myself in varying activities there, such as studying, playing games, painting, and more. The place is adjacent to farms and a small jungle. So, every morning, I am greeted with birds chirping. I also get engrossed in planting and gardening there.

Sample Answer 2

Waking up to a daily nine to five job and dealing with all kinds of irksome issues everyday will surely drive you insane someday unless you have a healthy way to relieve stress and boredom. Fortunately, I have my own cure – a retreat to ABC, a mountainous area where I can’t see any tourists – which I have taken every once in a while, whenever life is giving me a hard time.

ABC is located roughly 200 km to the northeast of my city and about 1,500 m above sea level, which is well-known for its year-round cool weather. Because it is not a popular tourist attraction, it’s a favorite place for some locals looking for a tranquil place to get away from their tight schedules . Since it’s not very far from the city center, only half an hour if traveling by plane, I go there quite often, around 4 times per year. And every trip holds its own fascination depending on what activities I participate in. Normally, I would go trekking into the wild to burn up my energy and enjoy the feeling of sweat soaking my clothes and being physically exhausted. It makes me feel alive and rejuvenated again. Sometimes when I feel like pushing myself to the limit , extreme sports such as water sliding or cliff jumping are my favorites. Those kinds of entertainment require good health condition and adventurous spirit, hence, they’re not for everyone. I usually spend 3 days in ABC everytime I visit it and although it’s only a short time, I do feel some of the burdens I shoulder are swept away and am prepared to face whatever comes next.

Questions for Part 3

Are there many quiet places in your city.

I reckon there aren’t many tranquil places in our city unless you wander around the border to the countryside. I suppose any cosmopolitan city is as crowed and active as mine so it’s quite tricky to find a peaceful spot to escape just for a while. Nevertheless, if you don’t mind an hour riding to the edge of the city, you will be hypnotized by many endless paddy fields and colorful flying kites.

Why do people sometimes prefer to be alone?

I don’t think there is a simple explanation for why people sometimes seek solitude to enjoy life by themselves. It has happened to me a few times as well when I feel suffocated by a bustle and hustle of city life. You have to spend two-third of your day being surrounded by all kinds of people and work that you barely have time for yourself and things you love, which is physically and emotionally detrimental . Therefore, in order to balance their personal lives, people often try to minimize contacts with outside world to find their inner peace when possible.

Is there much noise around your home?

My house is far from the city center, so the neighborhood is quite peaceful and livable . I can hardly imagine myself living elsewhere, especially the urban center due to its noise pollution and terrible congestions during rush hours. Admittedly, there are certain advantages when living there: short-distance commute , fabulous restaurants, various entertainment facilities and so on, which is pretty tempting . However, I am a social butterfly and prefer a good book to any meeting, hence, I love my tranquil place now.

Does this noise affect you in any way?

Since my neighborhood is relatively restful , I am not often disturbed by noises. Yet, every once in a while when some neighbor throws a party or has their house refurbished , I tend to get distracted . I don’t work well under stress or any kind of distractions since it makes me unfocused. Even if it’s a bit loud, I don’t want to complain since most of the time they are incredible well-behaved . Hence, I choose to do my choirs or hang out with some friends instead to make my time useful.

How do you think noise in cities could be reduced?

It will take great effort to be able to reduce noise pollution in cities and everybody will need to join hand. Firstly, turn off your electronics when you’re out of home or office. It may sound unnecessary and trivial but imagine the whole neighborhood let the music play all night long, it would be a nightmare. Secondly, put on your earphones in public places. Nobody wants to know your music taste or to be disturbed when trying to focus on their reading. Besides, encourage your friends and family do the same. The more participants, the less noise population.

describe a quiet place essay

Sample Answer

It is quite transcedental how we try to find the quiet in the fast paced chaotic world. Today, everyone is so busy with their work and in their own life, that it is quite requisite to spend some good time in seclusion. Today, I would like to talk about a quiet place where I enjoy some alone time, away from the worldly pandemonium. The place is the Dashashwamedh ghat, situated in one of the oldest cities of the world across the banks of the holy river Ganga.

I first came across the place , when my father was posted to the city as part of his job, and it was a usual Saturday evening when I stepped out of my house with my father to witness the mesmerizing Ganga prayers that were being offered by the people who came from across the country. It was at that time when I realised I found my peace of mind.

When I was residing in the city, I used to go there every once in a while, especially on the evenings, when I felt I was emotionally drained and exhausted of maintaining the hasslesome work life balance. Honestly, the place is more like my safe haven and so, every time I go there, I sit on the stairs, made across the bank of Ganga with my legs dipped in the cold water watching the sun go down, and the blue sky adding a hue of red and orange to it. I would spend their hours just so as to receive the tranquility it provides to the mind and soul. Furthermore, I sometimes also enjoy doing some recreational activities like boating and yoga which rejuvenates my mind and soul.

The reason why this place captivates me is the absolutely breath taking calm blue water, and the blue sky along with the sun adding on its inexplicable beauty. The serenity of the place calms me down, and brings about the inner joy and bliss The place is a sight for sore eyes. It teaches me finding and appreciating the beauty in simple things that life has to offer.

Speaking -Part 3 (Follow up questions) Here are some examples of follow up questions that examiner may ask during your speaking (part 3) related to cue card ‘Describe a quiet place you like to spend your time in’.

Q1.Is it hard to find quiet places in cities? Definitely yes, because with every passing day, cities are growing to become noisier. It is becoming a compact space to survive ,and somehow, people have become habitual to it. The tall buildings, high rise apartments and industrial developments have dominated the place, leaving absolutely no space which individuals can find peaceful. Therefore, it is quite hard to find the quiet places in the city.

Q2. Why is it quieter in the countryside? Countryside is the place where people often go to spend some good time in isolation amidst the verdant views of the nature surrounded by the simplicity of the village life. This is because, it is far away from the clutches of the rapid Urbanisation that is currently on run. Thus, leaving the area more peaceful and pristine, with less pollution and fresh air.

Q3. Why do people go to quiet places? There are abundant reasons for this. First and foremost, the lush green farms and the pollution free environment. In the rat race of earning more money, people are so tired that whenever they get some leisure time which is generally on weekends, they like to spend it in reticence by themselves, rather than going to some noisy places and attending parties.

Sample Answer of Describe a Quiet Place You Like to Spend Your Time in

Well, tranquil places give a piece of mind to every person, and there are many places where people usually go to stay away from the hustle bustle of city life. Here I would like to speak about a place, which is a quiet place and I usually go there. It is a park, which is at a stone’s throw from my home.

Although the public places are full of crowds, this Park is very quiet in the wee hours, and I go there because it attracts me to spend maximum time there, and I do meditation and yoga there. People in my city are generally indolent. They don’t get up early morning. So it is free from noise in the morning, and I utilise this time because whenever I go in the morning, I feel fresh, and I remain energetic the whole day. Besides, I like this place because the place is full of natural vegetation and exotic flowers fascinate me to spend some time in the lap of nature. I am delighted that I have a gorgeous park in my locality, and I also contribute to plant more trees there to maintain the beauty of this park.

I can say one can’t get peace of mind except for nature because nature is great in itself by providing a soothing effect to the mind and body of the person. So this is a place, which is serene in the morning time and I love to visit that place.

describe a quiet place essay

“In my city there are a lot of green spaces and parks, so fortunately there are a lot of quiet places I can go to unwind and escape the hustle and bustle of the city centre. One place in particular is called ‘Crystal Gardens” here in Sofia in Bulgaria.

“In the park,  there is a pretty little duck pond .  You can see ducks and ducklings swimming about in the water, I like  sitting there and reading a book or just listening to music.  You can  enjoy the peace and quiet, especially in the city.  There are  also some really nice walking trails in the park.  You can go  hiking or just  wander around and  get lost in the park.  I like going there to do some exercise when the weather is nice. Lastly,  there are lots of outdoor cafes in the park. After I go walking,  I like   sitting down there and  having a coffee or a beer and  doing some people-watching. Overall, it’s just a really nice place.

I’m probably going to go there at some point this week because the weather is supposed to be wonderful. So I’m looking forward to blowing off some steam in Crystal Gardens so I can forget about my IELTS test for a while!”

Describe a quiet place –Speaking

Describe a quiet place ● Where it is ● When you like to go there ● What you do there ● Why you like to visit there

I am an introvert person and I do not like to visit the places which are loud and gathering. I love to live in a quiet place where I can talk to myself for a long time to improve myself in terms of internally. I often visit my grandparents home in a village. It is far away from hustle and bustle of city life. I visit this place two to three times a year to rejuvenate. It is a big house with four rooms and a big lawn. My grandparents are no longer here. My uncle and aunt live in big cities and they come here to experience the peace in villages. I remember that I spend some time of my childhood at this place and have some old memories. Whenever I am tired then I come to this place to get away from the tight work schedules. on coming here I feel alive and rejuvenated again. On staying a few days here I got relaxed both physically and mentally. During vacation, I love to recall the old memories. To conclude, I would say that I am in love with this place and I think there is no place like this in the world.

Weary but Determined, Ukrainians Vow Never to Bow to Russia

Despite death, destruction and deprivation, nearly 90 percent still believe in Ukraine’s ultimate victory — as long as Western aid continues.

Reporting from Kharkiv, Ukraine

  • Feb. 25, 2024 Updated 10:24 a.m. ET

When Russian missiles struck the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv a couple of weeks ago, schoolchildren and their teachers installed in newly built underground classrooms did not hear a thing.

Down in the bowels of Kharkiv’s cavernous, Soviet-era subway stations, the city administration has built a line of brightly decorated classrooms, where 6- and 7-year-olds are attending primary school for the first time in their lives in this war-stricken city.

“The children were fine,” said Lyudmyla Demchenko, 47, one of the teachers. “You cannot hear the sirens down here.”

Ten years after the conflict with Russian-backed separatists broke out and two years into Moscow’s full-scale invasion, Ukrainians are weary but ever determined to repel the invaders. The war has touched every family — with thousands of civilians dead, close to 200,000 soldiers killed and wounded, and nearly 10 million refugees and displaced in a country of nearly 45 million people. Yet, despite the death, destruction and deprivations, a majority of Ukrainians remain optimistic about the future, and even describe themselves as happy, according to independent polls.

Kharkiv is a good example. It lies only 25 miles from the border with Russia and has suffered a heavy share of Russian artillery, drone and missile attacks. Most families fled at the beginning of the war or lived for months underground in the subway, as Russian troops came close to seizing the city. But the Ukrainian defenses held, families returned and the city came back to life.

Several children walk down a hallway. A classroom with children is seen through glass.

In December, when Russian missile attacks escalated again, most people stayed put. Kyryl Rohachov, 22, even opened a cocktail bar on one of Kharkiv’s main avenues with a childhood friend who now manages the business.

Days before the opening in January, missile strikes shattered buildings and windows along the street. “It’s not the best time,” Mr. Rohachov admitted in a video call from Switzerland, where he works in a restaurant and cares for his orphaned brother and his own family. “But I want to bring something new to my lovely Kharkiv.”

In a recent opinion poll conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, the overwhelming majority of respondents, nearly 90 percent, said they still believed in Ukraine’s victory, as long as Western aid continued.

More than 60 percent of respondents considered themselves happy, even while the majority said they had lost income and suffered from physical and mental health problems. A similar number said they had lost at least one relative or friend, said Anton Hrushetsky, the director of the institute.

People seriously pared back their lives and expectations, he said, adding, “That is keeping these happiness levels higher.”

Nevertheless, there are signs of a small but growing pessimism, he said. In December, 19 percent of respondents said they were ready to make concessions to Russia to bring an end to the war, an increase from 10 percent in May.

That pessimism was directly tied to waning Western support for Ukraine, Mr. Hrushetsky said.

“When they see this insufficient support and these political problems in the United States, in the Western European states, they are becoming more depressed and more pessimistic,” he said.

It is already being felt in the army ranks, where commanders complain of a shortage of ammunition and a lack of manpower as fewer men are enlisting. Soldiers say they have noticed that when they enter a cafe or restaurant in uniform, people turn away or clear the room, scared that the soldiers might be recruitment officers serving draft papers.

The pain and loss felt by everyone are evident at the constant funerals around the country and in the expanding military graveyards. A crowd of 300 turned out on a recent day in the town of Kamianske to say farewell to a fallen soldier. Everyone, old and young, knelt on the frozen ground as his coffin passed on its way to the cemetery.

The suffering caused by Russia’s invasion has hardened attitudes in Kharkiv. Part of the province lived under a brutal seven-month occupation in 2022, and the bombardment continues. This month, two families, three children among them, were burned alive in their homes when missiles struck a fuel depot, setting an adjoining line of houses ablaze.

“Each missile they shoot at us just fuels our fury,” said the chief police investigator for Kharkiv Province., Serhii Bolvinov, who has opened thousands of criminal cases against Russia for rape, torture and arbitrary killings, as well as deaths and loss of property from bombardment.

“Each of us has hate for Russians at a maximum level,” he said. “And it’s hard to understand when it will start declining. Because for now, it’s only growing.”

Anatolii Kozyr, 72, played a video on his cellphone of his farm and home, 80 miles east of Kharkiv, which were destroyed by Russian strikes a month ago.

“All my life I was gathering and organizing, and in one moment everything was gone,” he said. He lost 3,000 tons of grain, 1,000 pigs, a workshop and farm machinery, he said. “Nothing was left.”

The Russians now stand less than two miles from his village, and he sees little hope of being able to return. “They are advancing,” he said.

Dr. Maryna Prokopenko, 28, a surgeon at Kharkiv Regional Hospital, calms her nerves by working and, in her spare time, boxing to vent her anger.

She fled to Poland at the beginning of the war but, missing home, returned to Kharkiv after a month. An ear, nose and throat specialist, she spends most of her time patching up wounded civilians.

“We try to work a lot because it really is a distraction,” she said. “I have work, and I am calm and strong.”

Like many Ukrainians, she yearns for the war to stop. “When I see all these wounds and destroyed bodies, and so many physical disabilities, it is awful,” she said. “I want this war to end.”

But when asked about giving up territory in a peace treaty, or ceding Kharkiv to Russian control, she rejected the prospect outright.

Two neighbors in their 80s, Raisa and Svitlana, strolling through the snow in Kharkiv, were among the pessimists.

They criticized the leaders who brought war upon them. “I hope they lose their ambition and negotiate,” Svitlana said, adding that President Volodymyr Zelensky would have to cede ground. “He cannot win.” The women gave only their first names to avoid recriminations.

Pro-democracy changes introduced several years ago that brought more accountability to local government have helped to bolster Ukraine’s resilience, some analysts have said. Ukraine also has plenty of natural leaders in addition to its military commanders and politicians.

One of Kharkiv’s most beloved characters is Serhii Zhadan, a 50-year-old punk rocker, poet, novelist and lyricist who tours the country entertaining fans and supporting soldiers on the front lines. He played a raucous set in Kharkiv last Sunday, paying tribute at one point to a group of leather-clad bikers who have been fixing and delivering motorbikes for the troops.

Mr. Zhadan has written searing verse over the 10 years of war, including a poignant poem on the loss of a childhood friend from his home province of Luhansk, in eastern Ukraine. And he has immortalized in song Kharkiv’s children, who lived for weeks in the subway at the beginning of the war.

Angry and cheerful kids of Kharkiv basements Kids living in the depths of the subway.

Our Coverage of the War in Ukraine

News and Analysis

Some 31,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed  since Russia’s invasion began two years ago, President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine said, acknowledging for the first time in the war a concrete figure for the country’s toll.

As the war in Ukraine enters its third year , leaders in Kyiv are trying to find a new path forward  amid ferocious Russian assaults, while facing a series of daunting unknowns and hard choices .

The United States, responding to the death of the Russian opposition leader Aleksei Navalny, unleashed its most extensive package of sanctions  on Russia since the invasion of Ukraine two years ago.

A Long Fight: On the second anniversary  of Russia’s invasion, many weary but determined Ukrainians  are taking a longer view of the war , pinpointing the Maidan uprising of 2014 as the start of a 10-year conflict with their adversary.

Sending a Message: Two years since the start of the war in Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin of Russia has fully embraced the image of an unpredictable strongman  ready to escalate his conflict with the West.

Wounded Soldiers: The number of Russian troops with amputated limbs or serious injuries is believed to be staggering . When these veterans return home, they face a patchwork system of treatment and, often, efforts to keep them out of the public eye .

IELTS Speaking Part 1: Topic Quiet place

Here are the Part 1 questions on the topic “ Quiet place ” that will appear in the IELTS Speaking test.

describe a quiet place essay

I. Questions

1. Are there many quiet places in your city?

2. Why do people sometimes prefer to be alone?

3. Is there much noise around your home?

4. Does this noise affect you in any way?

II. Samples

My city does have some quiet places. We have serene parks and gardens where you can escape the city’s hustle and bustle. Also, there are libraries and cozy cafes that offer peaceful environments for reading or relaxation.

People enjoy solitude for various reasons. It’s a chance to recharge, reflect, and have personal space. Sometimes, it’s about indulging in hobbies, reading, or just having ‘me time.’ Being alone can help clear the mind and reduce stress, allowing people to return to social interactions refreshed and balanced.

Yeah, it can get pretty lively around my place. I’ve got neighbors with kids, and they’re always playing and having a blast. Also, there’s the occasional traffic noise. But honestly, I don’t mind it. It makes the neighborhood feel vibrant, and I’ve gotten used to it.

The noise doesn’t bother me much. I’ve grown used to it over time, and it doesn’t really disrupt my concentration. I’ve learned to tune it out and focus on my tasks. However, certain noises can be distracting or irritating, like loud construction work or honking horns.
