Need of Computer Literacy in today’s age
Literacy has always been important for success in school, work, and life in general, and unless our society undergoes a drastic change it will always be important. However, literacy in the 21st century isn’t just about being able to read and write fluently. Many have argued that computer literacy is just as important in our modern world.
A few decades ago, computer use was mostly relegated to a handful of professions. Not many people owned their own computers, and most computers were used as a tool on the job. These days, there is at least one computer in every household, and most people have active accounts on Facebook or Twitter or at least an email address.
There are many clear advantages to being computer literate in the 21st century. Here are just five of them:
- More job opportunities
Entering the workforce and getting a job for many people once involved finding work in fields like construction and manufacturing. While these industries haven’t disappeared entirely, it isn’t nearly as easy to find work in them. For many people, it’s easier to find an office job that involves the use of a computer. Naturally, being able to use a computer will put you at a distinct advantage when you apply for these kinds of positions.
- Better communication
A significant part of communication in the 21st century is done remotely over computer networks. Email is more convenient than traditional mail in many ways, and people who might otherwise never be able to speak to each other regularly exchange messages even though they may be on opposite sides of the world. Whether you are keeping in touch with old friends or emailing your resume to employers, communication via the Internet is vital in the modern age.
For many young people, computers are replacing television as the go-to source of entertainment. Teenagers are arguably more likely to watch videos on YouTube than flip through TV channels, and services such as Netflix allow people to watch TV shows and movies any time they want as long as they have a reliable Internet connection. In many ways, computers and the Internet represents the future of entertainment and those who don’t take the time to become computer literate may be left behind.
- Having an up-to-date news source
Although there are still plenty of people who read those, newspapers are quickly becoming relics of the past. People are now choosing to read the news online, and these sites can be updated instantly as stories develop. Being computer literate enough to access these sites means being able to better keep up with current events.
- Being prepared for future
Computer technology is advancing faster than ever before, and it’s very easy to be left behind if you don’t take the time to become at least semi-literate when it comes to computers. The communication technology you use now will most likely be very different from what you will be using in five years, but it will still provide you with a solid foundation of computer literacy that will serve you for years to come.
So, that’s why it’s really important that our students don’t feel dominated because of lack of IT education.

Essay Sample on Necessity of Computer Literacy in College
Should computer literacy be required for all college students.
Having access to computer software and the Internet became very important in the modern world. Whatever position you hold, you need a computer support . A manager uses his laptop to look through financial statements, send emails or hold videoconferences . A maid needs a special card to get access to rooms and the whole hotel system is controlled by the computer . Furthermore, one can use Internet access for entertainment . For instance, it is much easier to check when and where the first run of a film will take place than to call.
In the age of the global computerization computer illiteracy could be a great problem for younger generations. University and college authorities implement platforms for e-learning and self-training, yet a lot of students are not able to use them. They are not aware of how the system works and what they need to do to become more successful in the studying process. Moreover, professors require their students to make presentations using Power Point or even short film projects on selected subjects. Computer-illiterate students cannot cope with such tasks as they don’t have any skills for that.
Still, there is no problem without solution. One of the best ways to avoid such difficulties would be to implement compulsory computer courses in schools. Such course should teach students how to work with the most widespread software, use different Internet browsers and define the most common computer malfunctions .

Recently, computers are being used in most of the current jobs students will be taking on in the future. Computers are known to make many tasks easier and faster to perform while still being accurate. For instance, computers are being used in finance, business, education, and medical fields. With this, students should be taught at least the basic skills that they will need in the future. There are several reasons why computer literacy should be considered as a requirement: First, computers make the student learning process easier. Second, these machines are used in almost all working fields. Finally, technological developments depend mostly on computers.
A computer is an important tool for learning. Students can write their school paper using computers. They can conveniently look-up information using the Internet. If students, for example, were asked to write a paper about pollution, but they do not know the meaning of the word, they could use a search engine to search for its meaning. They will find different information from the definition of the word, to the types of solutions to prevent pollution from happening. They can also find recently published studies on pollution as well as new techniques for its prevention. All these information can be found easily if the student was taught how to use the computer and on how to use search engines. This will be useful for them in their future.
Finally, the massive improvements in computer technology invite us to utilize it in the field of education in an innovative way. It is a must that students possess the basic knowledge of using computers in order to cope up with this development. An example for this massive improvement is the newly developed way for communication such as using the web camera to communicate via computers as well as through smart phones.
It is not exaggerated to say that those who do not know how to use computers are ill equipped for the future. We definitely have to make computer literacy a requirement for high school graduation.
