Ask Roundtable: New Year’s Resolutions
As another pandemic January comes to a close, it seems like a good time to check in on our New Year’s resolutions. Are we carrying our new habits into February and beyond with fresh resolve? Tumbling in sad slow motion off our intended wagons? Questioning the very nature and purpose of “resolutions”?
The Ask writers and editors got together via another virtual roundtable to talk about these well-intentioned attempts at behavior change. Here are some highlights from our Zoom chat.
So… Did We Even Make Any Resolutions This Year?
With time passing strangely in the pandemic and the future feeling all too uncertain, it stands to reason that lots of folks may be skipping the resolutions this year. Managing Editor Hannah Riley is in that camp. “Maybe my resolution is to make resolutions before it turns into June,” she says. “I’m kind of still interested in doing it. But the global vibe right now is not very conducive to resolutions for me.”
That global vibe is affecting quite a few of us here at Ask. I’ve personally been thinking that 2022 may be the year of the anti-resolution. I had a grand plan to start working out in the mornings. And then when January 1 rolled around, I promptly committed to sleeping in until 8:30 a.m. and moving as little as possible. And it felt great! The total acceptance of sloth felt like an appropriate mental health choice at this moment in time.
Senior Editor Hanna Shea chimed in with a radical thought. “I sometimes wonder if January is even the right time to make resolutions, given that it’s the darkest time of the year, when you just feel like hibernating and eating soup.”
From there, our talk turned to the ways in which New Year’s resolutions seem doomed to fail. We all make these promises every year with the tacit assumption that they’re gonna peter out in a couple of weeks. So is there a better way to do it? Would changing up the timing make a difference?
Forget New Year’s — Bring on the Autumnal/Birthday/Equinox Resolutions
Social Media Editor Bryn Rich thinks the January timing is warping our choice of behavior changes. “It makes so much sense that people focus on diet, exercise or not drinking right after the holidays,” he says, “when they probably didn’t go to the gym and drank and ate more than usual. So if people made resolutions at a different time of year, they’d probably be pretty different resolutions.”
So what would be a better time? “Personally,” says Hanna, “I always feel more inspired to do some sort of resolution when the fall rolls around. And I think that’s because of the childhood connection to the new school year.”
For Senior Writer Patricia Puentes, spring sounds like a better bet. “I think the best moment is daylight savings time,” she says. “I’m not a morning person and I can’t exercise in the morning. So it will be much easier once there’s more light in the afternoon. Right now I’m like, ‘Oh, it’s dark, let’s have dinner at 6 p.m.!’”
Writer Eric Mueller agrees. “I love the idea of daylight savings time. I’ve also seen people make resolutions on Lunar New Year, Rosh Hashanah or the summer solstice. Autumnal and vernal equinoxes would fall on good dates too.”
Not all the suggestions hinge on a certain time of year. Hannah thinks the best time for resolutions is more personal. “When I think about the only times I’ve successfully completed a resolution,” she says, “it’s always been on my birthday. I don’t know if it’s just more personal, but I quit drinking on my birthday one year, another year I quit smoking, and for some reason those things stuck.”
Editor Caleb Bailey had a similar experience. “Hannah’s on to something here. Some of my better habits started on my birthday,” he says. “When I turned 18, I said, ‘Okay, I’m gonna start working out now.’ And before I had dabbled, but I committed on my 18th birthday, and it stuck.”
Bryn agrees with the personal approach. “I like the birthday thing,” he says. “That makes it feel more personal and not just something you’re doing because everyone else is doing it.”
The Resolutions We Actually Made
Patricia’s Resolution: Read 22 Books and Get Back to a Pre-Pandemic Workout Routine
“I have a set number of books that I want to read , which is basically the same one as last year. Twenty-two books. So no big challenge there! And I do want to go back to working out five days a week, which is what I was doing before the pandemic. I had a routine and I would respect it every day, almost. I would do it no problem, go to a yoga class or run after work every day. The pandemic has made things very difficult , but I’m trying to get back to those five days a week.”
Eric’s Resolution: Get Really Good at Gift Wrapping
“When I was wrapping gifts this year, I realized that I’m really bad at wrapping presents,” Eric says. “So this is something small and tangible I can work on. Just wrap more gifts this year and give them. It’s like a practice in gratitude, but also I don’t want my gifts to look like a child wrapped them. I wanted to pick something that wasn’t a huge change. I’m aiming small and hoping for big results.”
Caleb’s Resolution: Skip the Negativity
“Last year was definitely just insanely stressful,” says Caleb. “And even back in 2020, I noticed that I was indulging in negative self-talk a lot more. I think a lot of us can relate to that — for some reason, the whole COVID situation makes you just be down on yourself more. And so my resolution this year is to be more accountable with that and to stop indulging in that so much. And even though it’s hard, that’s a resolution I want to stick to because it’s really important.”
Hanna’s Resolution: Do One Pull-Up
“My resolution is to get strong enough to do one pull-up,” says Hanna. “Whenever I’m watching an action movie and I see someone pull themselves up off a cliff face or something, I’m always like, ‘Oh my god, I couldn’t do that if I needed to.’ I physically couldn’t. So that’s what I’m shooting for. If after 2022 I end up in some sort of disaster scenario, I will be able to pull myself up off of a ledge.”
Bryn’s Resolution: Get Boring Appointments Out of the Way
“Planning in general is different these days,” says Bryn. “A lot of common resolutions are gym stuff — but what if the gym goes away again? So rather than trying to set something up for an extended period of time, I’m starting the year by doing my dental cleaning, my annual checkup — all of those little things you’re supposed to do, but that you can so easily let slide. It feels good and productive, and it doesn’t hinge too much on what’s going on in the rest of the world.”
Takeaways: Try Accountability, Moderation and a Little Public Shaming
The team is learning a lot from each other’s resolutions. “You’ve inspired me, Bryn,” says Patricia. “I’m gonna go call the dentist.” Hannah agrees. “That’s a great accountability hack,” she says. “Turn it into an appointment, and then it gets done!”
Moderation and small, achievable changes are also on our minds. Caleb stresses the importance of making resolutions that are realistic for you. “I think a lot of people will want to say, ‘Oh, I’m going to start dieting.’ And then they completely cut carbs or go keto and drive themselves crazy. And it’s like, a healthy diet change can mean choosing moderation. Have your junk food, just have it maybe once a week.”
Hanna agrees. “It’s so hard to make big sweeping, systemic life changes in one day. That feels like a losing proposition. So maybe just keep it small and manageable. And make sure it’s something that you actually want to do, instead of something that you feel like you should be doing.”
Starting small can be the way to achieve bigger things. “I like doing little incremental changes each day or each week,” says Hannah. “I used to go to bed at three or four in the morning. And then I would try to start going to bed at 10 o’clock, and it never worked. But when I tried going to bed just 10 minutes earlier each week, that stuck. And finally now I can go to bed at midnight and be okay.”
And what if you want to go for a big, cold turkey kind of endeavor? Well, I share with the group that I did Dry January last year and lasted for six months. And I think the reason it stuck is that I told everyone I knew that I was doing it. So when I started to slip, I would say “No, I’ve told everyone that I’m doing this,” and then that sense of guilt would keep me on track.
“So it sounds like the secret to a successful resolution is public shaming,” Caleb says.

Academic success starts with taking care of my body and mind within the framework of God. My high school focused on a well-balanced life including mind, body, and spirit. And I believe all of these are necessary in order to have a successful life. My New Year’s resolutions are to refresh my relationship with God and make decisions to keep myself healthy. If I can do these things, I will be successful at my third New Year’s resolution of success in the classroom.
First, I want to improve my relationship with God, I want to continue and enhance my daily prayers. I accepted Christ as my savior in 2019. After suffering from a prolonged illness of mononucleosis during my junior year of high school; I recovered and achieved success during my last year of high school and was accepted into an awesome university. My resolution is to live in a manner that demonstrates my love of the Lord, family, and friends.
Secondly, I want to take care of my body and stay healthy. I don’t want to get Covid-19 again or pass it to others, I plan to continue to always wear my mask and properly keep my distance from others. During my freshman fall semester I put on extra weight. I am no longer competing in my swimming and my body is not as fit. I stayed in the dorms most of the time for virtual classes and exercised inconsistently. My resolution is to exercise more consistently eat healthier foods, so I may have the needed energy for late-night studies, focused reading, memorization and learning of facts for my college courses.
Third, I resolve to be successful in the classroom. I plan to know from day 1 of spring semester when assignments are due, when tests will be given, the process of taking tests for particular classes and whether the test is online and if so, when it opens and when it closes. I learned a valuable lesson during fall semester that the window of beginning test taking is limited. I plan to manage my time in a way that I’m on top of the assignments and not catching up. By knowing when assignments are due, I plan to never be late or miss any assignment.

In order to attain my above mentioned resolutions and goals I will bring many changes in my day to day. One of the biggest cause of procrastination is excessive use of social media specially Facebook, Whats App, Twitter etc. Apart from it I will limit the time I spend in front of the television.
Instead of watching television excessively I will try to find a sport that I like and play that game in order to keep myself fit and smart. A good student is known by his behavior and character. I will be respectful to my parents, teachers and elders because respecting and obeying elders is counted in good manners.
Good manners makes our personality. These changes will enhance my personality. My New Year resolutions will not only help me to eliminate my bad habits and adopt good habits but it will also make my future bright and make me successful at every junction of life.

I am also a student and being a student I have also made resolutions before, but just like anybody else, I too break it up. But this time I am going to stick to my resolutions and make sure that I change myself.
I have noted down a few resolutions that I would like to take this year and stick onto them. The most important of all is to be organized. I never have the habit of organizing my work and therefore end up in incomplete homework and projects.

I have heard that reading is a good habit, but I hardly take the time to read, even if I have time. So this time I have decided that I would spend some time in reading books that would improve my knowledge and interest in reading. Hours together I sit in front of the system, though I know it is just wasting my time unnecessarily. I have decided to cut down the time I use for surfing and make it more productive, rather than just visiting social networking sites and chatting.
Along with the internet, the other electronic item that has addicted me is the cell phone. I spent hours talking over the phone, not realizing the harmful effects it causes and waste my time and money. I have decided to cut it down and make good use of time.
This time, I am determined to stick to my resolutions and get myself corrected to be a more better student , both for myself, and my family and to the society.

My dear students as you know that every new year reminds us that time is not static, time passes silently, it never stops. As it is said that time and tide waits for none . Dear students wake up from sound slumber of procrastination and carelessness. You are the architect of the nation and you are the future of the world. On the occasion of New Year I will insist each and everyone of you to set new year resolutions.
Setting new year resolutions will revive and renew you into a better student. I have remained student and have came across through your phase of life. Time is the greatest weapon in your hands, if you will make good use of your time it will transmute you into gold.
It’s the very time that matters more than anything else in life, realization of the importance of time won’t strike your minds now because you are surrounded and indulged in many activities that sounds beneficial to you, actually these wanton activities of yours will not avail you in future.
Time is a healer and teacher, now or then it will teach you a lesson which neither any teacher nor any book would had taught you so far. So my dear students do not murder your time mercilessly, stop running behind all unnecessary things and get rid of all useless activities and equip yourself with the productive use of time.
Persistence and regularity at work is key to success. If you desire to be successful, value your time and be complete your tasks within stipulated time.
It’s very necessary for a student to set new year resolution because new year resolution is nothing but a way to improve and enhance oneself. Without a solid and sound resolution you won’t be able to accomplish your goals, shun all negative moves of your past and start a new journey with firm faith and determination, whatever you desire and aspire to attain will fall into your lapse.
In the end I will suggest you that this year instead of setting yourself for disappointment with vague goals, try setting structured and traceable smart goals. Your goals must be realistic, attainable, specific and achievable.

The new year begins and resolutions are made. Hoping and planning for a better year, many people decide to work on a specific aspect of their personal life they believe needs improvement for the upcoming year. Such resolutions include: losing weight, eating healthier, and spending more time with family. Although their original intentions are good, they are quickly hindered by old routines and busy schedules. On the other hand, you could slip, lose your footing and plummet into the foaming waters, an animated portrait of defeat.
At least that’s the way I picture my New Year’s resolutions from past years: noble beginnings, groaning disasters.
It’s all because I inevitably make the same resolution every year: Organize my photos.
And I am not alone in writing down this simple goal on the last day of December.
I’ve clipped out enough articles titled “What to Do With Family Photos” and “Finally Organize Those Photos” to know that there are others who tremble at the thought of tackling their photo hoards.
As one of those articles reminds me: “The idea of sorting through them feels daunting, so instead you do nothing. The shots pile up; the cycle continues.”
What if one’s hesitancy to embark on sorting through old family photos is part of a cycle? Aren’t family photos evidence of the cycles of our lives: birth, growth, age, death? Do we avoid sorting through the boxes of photos in order to avoid cycling through the stages of our lives?
Throughout the first dozen years of my life, my mother, a Brooklyn girl who came out west with the love of her life, my father, another New Yorker who went to France in 1917 as a U.S. Marine, held a Kodak Brownie box camera at waist level and took “snapshots” of her only child. A teacher, housewife and then a working mother, she didn’t let the printed photos pile up in a Thom McAn shoe box.
Instead, she dislodged small rolls of exposed film from the camera, left them at the corner drug store and returned five days later to pick up the glossy black-and-white images of her 11-year-old daughter, squinting in the unyielding California sun.
Those images, at least 200 of them, went into a black album embossed on the cover with “Photographs.” Inside, on soft black pages, my mother lovingly penned with white ink the location of the snapshot and a date. She was so enamored of the wonder of those images that she even kept a double exposure of a 5-year-old’s first elephant ride, noting: “I was so excited!”
Maybe the focus of preserving these small black-and-white images was tinged with the rapture of a new technology. The Brownie camera had been invented by Kodak only 30 years earlier, and its magic was tangible and attractive.
So if there’s a New Year’s resolution on my list, it’s to sort, toss and organize my photos while remembering that life is a cycle of moments when we reached for a camera saying, “I’m so excited!”

It’s time to clean out some bad 2021 habits
The year 2021 was one for personal growth, rapid change and ridding myself of acquaintances or connections that were no longer healthy for me. With boundaries placed on relationships and focusing on my career, 2021 was the year dedicated to my own growth. While I felt I’ve made changes where necessary for the above this past year, I’ve let myself go in other areas of my life by continuing to act on bad habits with food and money.
Even though I graduated from university in 2020 and walked in-person in 2021, it appears my college habits have remained this past year, specifically by overspending on takeout meals and overconsuming alcohol.
This uneasy habit of wanting to go out to eat almost five days a week because I don’t want to cook took a toll on both my weight and my wallet. Transitioning myself out of this habit is very difficult and only made me angry with myself for listening to my cravings instead of budgeting on meals. Do I really need to go to Poki One N Half, Raising Canes, AYCE Korean BBQ and Starbucks in the same week? No, I definitely don’t. In 2022, I’m hoping to forgo my desire to eat out daily by pushing myself to learn more cooking recipes instead of relying on delivery services or cravings as my reasoning to eat out.
Aside from meals, I’ve also let my drinking habits get out of hand. Whenever I go out with friends or co-workers, I always have this urge to buy a drink or two on any occasion: birthdays, holiday parties, simple moments of celebration, or just because it’s Friday. While no one has ever pressured me into drinking as an adult or encouraged excessive drinking, I tend to overdo it myself. It’s caused deterioration in my health and has caused me to gain 20 pounds. While it won’t be easy to cut out alcohol consumption all at once, I’m ready to cut out drinking from my life in 2022 as it has not benefited me in any way and has only impacted my mental health negatively.
I’m looking forward to holding myself accountable for two habits that are no longer healthy for my life. But of course there’s one question for choosing to focus on these habits for my New Year’s resolution: Why? I’m at a point in my life where I’ve realized these habits are detrimental to my mental and physical health, and I no longer wish to continue to dig myself deep into this hole. It’s definitely not a habit one should have at this age. Allowing my college past to overtake my mid-20s adulthood will not serve me well.
Just as we physically clean out our homes for spring cleaning, I’m ready to clean out these habits from my lifestyle, leaving them behind in 2021 to make way for 2022.

Sixty-five years ago I had self-discipline. I could concentrate, focus and stay on task. I finished everything I started.
I wasn’t very wise, and my writing skills were inadequate. I got a master’s degree and teaching credentials with only three units of English.
Now, at 85, I am a lot wiser. My writing skills have improved. Thanks to The San Diego Union-Tribune editorial staff, I have learned to be brief. Say what you want to say and get out of there.
Unfortunately I have lost my self-discipline and ability to concentrate. I zap from one thing to another and never finish anything. I just don’t have the toughness to knuckle down and do what ought to be done.
I should exercise more, stop smoking and consume less caffeine and alcohol. I should make New Year’s resolutions, but I know it would be useless.
The thought of having that last smoke terrifies me. I’ve lost my self-discipline.

I have always resolved not to resolve anything based on a date. Most of my resolutions have to do with either something that I should have done or had screwed up. But here it is, another new year and the realization that I didn’t resolve to do anything in 2021. I came through with flying colors.
My two-year COVID-19 anniversary is not long from now. My garage is still a mess, a few business nuisances still awaiting closure, that not-quite-started history paper I’ve been dawdling on (and on), and my dicey sock drawer that resembles an archaeological dig before the digging.
I’m a meeting planner with no meetings to plan. Until we can all convene again, my colleagues and I scrape by with dashes of optimism, the virus retreating, and dread, the virus winning. At my company alone, we have 65 coordinators idle, save the kindle of hope we had with work right after Thanksgiving with a smaller Comic-Con and a smaller Amazon Web Services meeting. Then the flame died out with Omicron.
I don’t like being helpless, and I’m sad to admit that feeling sometimes gets to me. I have to do something, so here’s what I resolve for 2022: I will do those things that I can control, so that I’m ready when the virus abates enough for groups to gather. I will not allow discouragement to affect me in a way that will leave me ill-prepared to be at my best when the meetings business returns.

Resolving to be more resolute this year
When I was a child my parents helped my brother and me to make New Year’s resolutions. They asked us what we wanted to do better in the coming year, but suggested what, in their opinion, we should do better. Of course, as youngsters we didn’t realize that we were being “prompted.” Then at school our teacher would ask the class what our resolutions were. They also tried to influence us, with a nudge toward studying harder, reading more, etc. I remember one teacher in particular, Mrs. Shaw, my fourth grade English teacher, who would occasionally help us to remember our New Year’s resolution by having us write it down using proper grammar.
By February, the resolution was forgotten.
History repeats itself.
Last Jan. 1, I resolved to eat more (I’m too thin), exercise more (hmm), and play one of my musical instruments daily if even for a few minutes. That one went flat! I’m not sure if the resolutions lasted until February, but “things” seemed to get in the way. I did buy an under-desk peddle machine, which is sitting in my home office, but ....
Here it is — another New Year’s Day and another chance to make resolutions. I’ll try to keep them this year. Like last year I’ll try to eat more (Rubio’s and Starbucks here I come!); exercise more (put that under-desk peddler under your desk now, Iris!); and play a musical instrument. I’ve already taken out my soprano recorder and dusted off my piano keys.
So now it’s New Year’s Day and I’ve already made a start for the New Year. So what is really my New Year’s resolution for 2022? To keep my New Year’s resolution!

Pledge to do more and less in 2022
May our 2022 be the year of more and less.
More walks. More books. More nature, more art. Less doom-scrolling social media.
More cooking. Less takeout.
More water, less coffee. (Maybe.)
More time with family. Less time worrying about the choices of people beyond my four walls.
More effort to take on fulfilling projects. Less inclination to take on tasks that drain me.
More fun! Remember fun? It’s harder to find during a pandemic, when social distancing is preferred, when plans must be canceled again and again. But fun is out there somewhere, and we can find it again if we acknowledge that this is just the way things are for a while.

I wrote my New Year’s Resolutions down last year in my journal: exercise more, play tennis as much as possible, help more around the house, take Stella for more walks, enjoy nature more, read as much as possible, be a better coach, drink less alcohol and more water, write more and love more (be a kinder person). I exercised more or at least the same in ‘21 with the help of my workout buddies Mark and Paul. I also played a lot of tennis throughout the year. I need to keep working on helping more around the house, although I improved on that one from previous years, thanks to a long story I will not go into detail here. I failed to take Stella for as many walks as I had hoped. I always try to appreciate nature; only wish I could write like the UT’s “Outdoors” writer. I love to read, but it hurt to lose my bifocals, like I did about a month or so ago (I knew I had lost them when a fellow teacher said he had seen students playing with a lens outside his classroom), wah, wah. I lost my coaching job after one weird COVID year, though it was just a freshman football coaching job helping young quarterbacks (turned out to be a blessing in disguise trust me). I am working on drinking less; it is tough because I do not have the will power it takes to cut it out completely and living in the craft beer capitol of the world does not help. Water was an easy one to reach because I exercise and have partners reminding me to hydrate. I am writing more; it is one of those activities the more I write the more I want to write. And believe it or not, I am a kinder person, at least, depending on who you talk to about this subject.
In 2022 I am going to stick to the same resolutions: exercising, playing tennis, helping in various ways, enjoying nature, reading, drinking less of the bad liquid and more of the good one, writing more and continuing to improve on loving and caring. Taking the place of coaching will be working on my relationships, all of them. The relationship I have with my wife, remember, happy wife, happy life. The relationship I have with my son, daughter and my grandchildren. The one I have with my brother and two sisters, now in their 70’s and 80’s respectively. The relationships I grow each year with my students. The relationships I continue to cultivate with my teaching colleagues and tennis buddies. Relationships with all different types of people, the main ones with family, are the most important items human beings take the responsibility to nurture, because if a person has not done a decent job with these, in the end, what has he or she to show for? Nothing, they have wasted the most precious of all gifts, life. I would love to say I arrived at this most important of all resolutions on my own, but I had help. My son gave me the book Season of Life many years ago and the crux of the book is on how important relationships are in a person’s life. The plot has to do with a father and son, but dwells on multiple relationships before hitting the big one. I’ll let you know how successful I am with my resolutions in ‘22; in the meantime, Happy New Year, and good luck with yours!

As I look back at 2021, I am dismayed that a year that began with such hope and promise — a new President, vaccines that were going to put Covid in the rear view mirror, sweeping improvements in infrastructure, social programs, and general health and well being of the planet and its inhabitants. Well the glass got half full.
But I have no control over that. What I tried to do was finish projects that I began 8 years ago when I retired. I have finished two books, one dealing with spiritual growth during the pandemic - Spiritual Growth During Lockdown, and an historical personal memoir about rock and roll and the Vietnam War - The 60s and Beyond. They will be available on Amazon.
What I did not do is maintain my weight. I got the COVID 10. As in pounds. Stress makes cake and cookies and ice cream and chocolates look that much more appealing. But I have turned the corner and dropped seven.
So all in all, 2021 was not the cat’s pajamas, but it wasn’t a lump of coal either.
