essay on environmental pollution

One of the biggest risks to life as we know it is environmental degradation. The water we drink, the air we breathe, and the ecosystems on which we depend are all impacted by pollution. People, animals, and plants will decline if pollution levels continue to rise since they won’t be able to adapt to a significantly altered environment. Are you struggling to write an essay on environmental pollution? If the answer is yes, then this blog will help you get some ideas to write an effective essay. Keep reading further to know more!

This Blog Includes:

Essay on environmental pollution – 100 words , essay on environmental pollution – 250 words , essay on environmental pollution – 500 words .

The presence of contaminants in the environment is referred to as pollution. Gases like Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and Carbon Monoxide (CO), among others; solid pollutants like plastic, sewage, etc.; and chemicals like fertilisers, as well as those produced as byproducts in manufacturing, transportation, etc., are a few examples of polluting substances.

The immediate result of pollution is that it makes the world’s natural resources useless or toxic to use, as well as leads to the extinction of species and ecological imbalance. To stop more harm from occurring to the earth and its inhabitants due to environmental pollution, it is imperative to take proactive precautions.

When undesired elements, or pollutants, are present in the environment, it is said to be polluted. The environment is severely harmed by pollution, which poses a direct threat to it. Although the world has begun to understand the importance of addressing pollution if the planet and its biodiversity are to be conserved there is still a long way to go.

Everything that makes up the environment, including the air, water bodies, flora, and wildlife, is impacted by pollution in one way or another. There are four main types of pollution – Air Pollution, Water Pollution, Noise Pollution and Soil or Land Pollution . Additionally, pollution contributes to global issues including acid rain, global warming, and greenhouse gas consequences. A rise in the planet’s average surface temperature is referred to as global warming, and it causes starvation, floods, and droughts.

Environmental pollution has a wide-ranging impact. In addition to the current effects of pollution, a lack of effective pollution prevention measures also imperils the future of various species. The pollution is causing harm at a far faster rate than it can be healed. Reversing the environmental harm we have caused could take generations, and even then, it won’t be simple. It will require tight discipline and commitment to stop pollution.

The best ways feasible are being used by various nations to respond to these catastrophes. More efforts are being launched to raise public awareness about the dangers of pollution and the importance of preserving our ecosystem. Greener lifestyles are gaining popularity; examples include using wind and solar energy, new climate-friendly cars, and energy-efficient lighting.

Pollution is the term used to describe the entry of pollutants into the environment. Noise, water, and air pollution are only a few of the several types of pollution. There is a direct relationship between the rise of pollution levels and illnesses among people. Therefore, it is important for everyone to be knowledgeable about pollution, its impacts, and effective ways to eliminate it. Our environment needs a balanced combination of all components, just like our body requires a balanced diet. The environment is polluted by any substance that is present above that limit for example rise in the levels of nitrogen oxides and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere causes harm to human health due to poor air quality.

All forms of pollution, whether in the air, water, soil, or noise, have a negative impact on living things. Deadly diseases that are brought on by the contamination of soil, water, air, or sound affect organisms.

Among the most common disorders brought on by air pollution are acute lower respiratory infections in children, ischemic heart disease, stroke, lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and lung cancer. Air pollution is a major contributor to a number of ailments in India, including strokes, bronchitis, heart attacks, lung diseases, cancer, and early mortality from heart disorders. The most pressing issue in the world now is global warming, which is caused by air pollution.

Around the world, poor drinking water quality is the reason behind 50% of child deaths and 80% of illnesses, including more than 50 different diseases. Water pollution causes diarrhoea, skin diseases, malnutrition, and even cancer, as well as other issues that are related to it.

Every day, noise pollution has an effect on millions of people. The most frequent result of this is noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). Loud noises have the potential to cause stress, high blood pressure, heart disease, and sleep difficulties. Children in particular are prone to these health issues across the board in terms of age groups. Noise pollution is extremely harmful, and it’s especially deadlier for people with heart issues.

Use of the 3Rs, or reduce, reuse, and recycle, is the first step in reducing pollution. People should use air conditioners less since they generate noxious gases, such as ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons, which will minimise air pollution.

Reducing the number of vehicles on the road will also help to clean up the planet’s air. The more often cars are used, the more dangerous chemicals like sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and hydrocarbons that contribute to major air pollution are released into the atmosphere.

Increasing public awareness is a further means of reducing pollution on Earth. Through programmes like the “Go Green” campaign, which urges people to plant more trees and use recyclable materials in their daily lives, awareness can be raised about the significance of eliminating pollution on Earth. The “Earth Hour” is another globally recognised event that calls for everyone to turn off all lights for one hour in order to raise awareness of the significance of reducing electricity usage in order to minimise pollution on Earth.

The government’s obligation to maintain national laws is one way to reduce pollution on Earth. Offenders should be subject to harsh penalties, such as increased fines and longer prison terms, which will force them to reconsider their influence on the environment and serve as a message to those who are not currently involved but who might be in the future.

Essay on Environmental Pollution

The environment is the surrounding of an organism. The environment in which an organism lives is made up of various components like air, water, land, etc. These components are found in fixed proportions to create a harmonious balance in the environment for the organism to live in. Any kind of undesirable and unwanted change in the proportions of these components can be termed as pollution. This issue is increasing with every passing year. It is an issue that creates economic, physical, and social troubles. The environmental problem that is worsening with each day needs to be addressed so that its harmful effects on humans as well as the planet can be discarded.

Causes of Environmental Pollution

With the rise of the industries and the migration of people from villages to cities in search of employment, there has been a regular increase in the problem of proper housing and unhygienic living conditions. These reasons have given rise to factors that cause pollution.

Environmental pollution is of five basic types namely, Air, Water, Soil, and Noise pollution.

Air Pollution: Air pollution is a major issue in today’s world. The smoke pouring out of factory chimneys and automobiles pollute the air that we breathe in. Gases like carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and sulphur dioxide are emitted with this smoke which mixes with air and causes great harm to the human body, flora, and fauna. The dry-farm waste, dry grass, leaves, and coal used as domestic fuels in our villages also produce harmful gases. Acid rain occurs due to an excess of sulphur dioxide in the air.

The Main Sources of Air Pollution are as Follows:

Automobile pollution

Industrial air pollution

Burning garbage

Brick kilns

Indoor air pollution

Decomposed animals and plants

Radioactive elements

Water Pollution: Water pollution is one of the most serious environmental issues. The waste products from the growing industries and sewage water are not treated properly before disposing of the wastewater into the rivers and other water bodies, thus leading to water pollution. Agricultural processes with excess fertilizers and pesticides also pollute the water bodies.

The Main Sources of Water Pollution as Follows:

Marine commerce.

Industrial effluents joining seas and oceans.

Dumping of radioactive substances into seawater.

Sewage is disposed of into the sea by rivers.

Offshore oil rigs.

Recreational activities.

Agricultural pollutants are disposed of into the water bodies.

Soil or Land Pollution: Soil pollution or land pollution results from the deposition of solid waste, accumulation of biodegradable material, deposition of chemicals with poisonous chemical compositions, etc on the open land. Waste materials such as plastics, polythene, and bottles, cause land pollution and render the soil infertile. Moreover, the dumping of dead bodies of animals adds to this issue. Soil pollution causes several diseases in man and animals like Cholera, Dysentery, Typhoid, etc.

The Main Causes of Soil Pollution are as Follows:

Industrial waste

Urban commercial and domestic waste

Chemical fertilizers

Biomedical waste

Noise Pollution: With an increasing population, urbanization, and industrialization, noise pollution is becoming a serious form of pollution affecting human life, health, and comfort in daily life. Horns of vehicles, loudspeakers, music systems, and industrial activities contribute to noise pollution.

The Main Sources of Noise Pollution as Follows:

The machines in the factories and industries produce whistling sounds, crushing noise, and thundering sounds.

Loudspeakers, horns of vehicles.

Blasting of rocks and earth, drilling tube wells, ventilation fans, and heavy earth-moving machinery at construction sites.

How Pollution Harms Health and Environment

The lives of people and other creatures are affected by environmental pollution, both directly and indirectly. For centuries, these living organisms have coexisted with humans on the planet.

1. Effect on the Environment

Smog is formed when carbon and dust particles bind together in the air, causing respiratory problems, haze, and smoke. These are created by the combustion of fossil fuels in industrial and manufacturing facilities and vehicle combustion of carbon fumes.

Furthermore, these factors impact the immune systems of birds, making them carriers of viruses and diseases. It also has an impact on the body's system and organs.

2.  Land, Soil, and Food Effects

The degradation of human organic and chemical waste harms the land and soil. It also releases chemicals into the land and water. Pesticides, fertilisers, soil erosion, and crop residues are the main causes of land and soil pollution.

3. Effects on water

Water is easily contaminated by any pollutant, whether it be human waste or factory chemical discharge. We also use this water for crop irrigation and drinking. They, too, get polluted as a result of infection. Furthermore, an animal dies as a result of drinking the same tainted water.

Furthermore, approximately 80% of land-based pollutants such as chemical, industrial, and agricultural waste wind up in water bodies.

Furthermore, because these water basins eventually link to the sea, they contaminate the sea's biodiversity indirectly.

4. Food Reaction

Crops and agricultural produce become poisonous as a result of contaminated soil and water. These crops are laced with chemical components from the start of their lives until harvest when they reach a mass level. Due to this, tainted food has an impact on our health and organs.

5. Climate Change Impact

Climate change is also a source of pollution in the environment. It also has an impact on the ecosystem's physical and biological components.

Ozone depletion, greenhouse gas emissions, and global warming are all examples of environmental pollution. Because these water basins eventually link to the sea, they contaminate the sea's biodiversity indirectly. Furthermore, their consequences may be fatal for future generations. The unpredictably cold and hot climate impacts the earth’s natural system.

Furthermore, earthquakes, starvation, smog, carbon particles, shallow rain or snow, thunderstorms, volcanic eruptions, and avalanches are all caused by climate change, caused entirely by environmental pollution.

How to Minimise Environmental Pollution?

To minimise this issue, some preventive measures need to be taken.

Principle of 3R’s: To save the environment, use the principle of 3 R’s; Reuse, Reduce and Recycle.

Reuse products again and again. Instead of throwing away things after one use, find a way to use them again.  Reduce the generation of waste products.

Recycle: Paper, plastics, glass, and electronic items can be processed into new products while using fewer natural resources and lesser energy.

To prevent and control air pollution, better-designed equipment, and smokeless fuels should be used in homes and industries. More and more trees should be planted to balance the ecosystem and control greenhouse effects.

Noise pollution can be minimised by better design and proper maintenance of vehicles. Industrial noise can be reduced by soundproofing equipment like generators, etc.

To control soil pollution, we must stop the usage of plastic. Sewage should be treated properly before using it as fertilizers and as landfills. Encourage organic farming as this process involves the use of biological materials and avoiding synthetic substances to maintain soil fertility and ecological balance.

Several measures can be adopted to control water pollution. Some of them are water consumption and usage that can be minimized by altering the techniques involved. Water should be reused with treatment.

The melting icebergs in Antarctica resulted in rising sea levels due to the world's environmental pollution, which had become a serious problem due to global warming, which had become a significant concern. Rising carbon pollution poses a risk for causing natural disasters such as earthquakes, cyclones, and other natural disasters.

The Hiroshima-Nagasaki and Chernobyl disasters in Russia have irreversibly harmed humanity. Different countries around the world are responding to these calamities in the most effective way possible.

Different countries around the world are responding to these calamities in the most effective way possible. More public awareness campaigns are being established to educate people about the hazards of pollution and the importance of protecting our environment. Greener lifestyles are becoming more popular; for example, energy-efficient lighting, new climate-friendly autos, and the usage of wind and solar power are just a few examples.

Governments emphasise the need to plant more trees, minimise the use of plastics, improve natural waste recovery, and reduce pesticide use. This ecological way of living has helped humanity save other creatures from extinction while making the Earth a greener and safer ecology.

 Conclusion

It is the responsibility of every individual to save our planet from these environmental contamination agents. If preventive measures are not taken then our future generation will have to face major repercussions. The government is also taking steps to create public awareness. Every individual should be involved in helping to reduce and control pollution.

Question:   Many people think that environmental problems are too big for individual citizens to fix. In contrast, others feel that the government cannot solve them unless individuals take constructive actions. Discuss both perspectives, and let us know what you think.

Answer:

There are pressing environmental problems that the world faces today. Some believe that they are outside the ambit of individuals to solve, while others believe that unless people step up, the governments will be unable to solve them either. This essay will discuss both these views before concluding.

The argument is heavily tilted towards individual citizens lacking the material resources and social networks to fix long-standing environmental problems. There are several facets towards solving environmental issues, notably those concerning the administrative, governmental, regulatory, authoritative, law and order, and legal domains. For instance, manufacturing units keep releasing poisonous gases into the atmosphere while polluting rivers with toxic materials. Individuals cannot possibly combat these instances. People may argue that every stakeholder can step up and pressure the authorities and companies to take proactive steps. However, this is not a feasible solution since these companies are largely under the ownership of businesses and funds that only seek profits and do not prioritize the environment.

It leads to the natural deduction that solving environmental problems is the joint responsibility of public stakeholders and the government. The authorities should offer legal and administrative support towards curbing pollution and other environmental issues. If any individual wishes to notify the authorities of something harmful in their region, then steps should be taken to streamline this provision as much as possible. Governments may consider setting up pollution control bodies, desks in every administrative office, random environmental inspections at manufacturing units, fines and legal provisions for a rule violation, and similar steps.

Hence, the above premise supports the argument that the government can't fix everything unless there is sustained pressure from a section of society and individuals. The responsibility seems to veer directly towards individual actions collectively harnessed to pressure legislative and administrative mechanisms to fix prevalent issues. The combined initiatives of citizens and authorities will be the most effective solution for solving environmental problems. However, this does not mean that individual responsibility takes a backseat until there is government support. Individuals can contribute in numerous smaller ways towards ecological preservation. Question:   Some citizens feel that the biggest environmental issue currently is the loss of animal and plant species. Some think that there are bigger ecological issues worth addressing. Discuss both perspectives, and let us know what you think.

Many people feel that there are bigger environmental issues and potential disasters that should be tackled first. In contrast, others believe that the loss of particular animal and plant species is the biggest threat at the moment. Despite the first argument having some merits, I agree that the loss of biodiversity through the vital plant and animal species is the biggest environmental issue we face today.

Natural disasters have increased worldwide, and scientists cite climate change as the major reason. Many experts argue that the temperature increase, especially across oceans, has led to a higher risk of blizzards, hurricanes, cyclones, and tsunamis. There are multiple natural disasters, including the devastating cyclones  Aila and  Amphan,  which struck India periodically over the last two decades. The biggest tragedy of the entire century was arguably the 2004 tsunami that destroyed Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia, causing innumerable deaths, serious injuries, loss of property and homes, livelihood risks, and unimaginable damages.

The key reason animal and plant species have to be safeguarded are the growing number of endangered species on the planet over the last few decades. Take the example of polar bears, who mostly reside in the Arctic, where they currently face threats due to the prolonged melting of the ice caps. Polar bears may completely become extinct by 2100, as per forecasts. It will have a chain effect on the Arctic ecosystem and other animals in the endangered category, such as narwhals and seals. It is only a single example of global warming and how it impacts the lives of plant and animal species.

In my opinion, biodiversity loss is the biggest threat faced by the environment today. Citizens, action groups and governments, should find ways to collaborate and take positive steps towards preserving endangered wildlife and plants along with their ecosystems. It is because biodiversity is the bedrock of natural growth, maintenance, and evolution. Governments should simultaneously look at ways to lower carbon emissions, the usage of fossil fuels, and other factors causing climate change and deadly natural consequences. (Words: 353)

In conclusion, addressing environmental problems requires a comprehensive understanding of the issues at hand and a commitment to implementing practical solutions. Essays on environmental problems and solutions for IELTS Writing Task 2 should not only highlight the urgency of these issues, such as climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss, but also emphasize the effectiveness of solutions like renewable energy adoption, conservation efforts, and sustainable practices. By critically analyzing these topics, candidates can demonstrate their awareness, analytical abilities, and language proficiency. Furthermore, such essays encourage a global discourse on environmental stewardship, underscoring the need for collective action and innovative approaches to safeguard our planet for future generations. As we move forward, it is imperative that we all contribute to these solutions, embodying the change needed to address the environmental challenges that face us today.

How to keep our environment clean essay?

As human beings, we are blessed with a beautiful and nurturing environment. However, it is fast being reduced to shreds owing to the negative impact of our destructive and careless actions. Out of our greed, selfishness and carelessness, we are steadily destroying the environment brick by brick. The rising incidence of natural calamities throughout the world and growing emissions are only two indicators of what is to come if we do not mend our ways. I strongly feel that communities, Governments and individuals should take more concrete steps towards keeping their immediate environments clean and in good shape.

We should enhance our environments by planting more trees and encouraging others to do the same, especially the future generations. We should also advocate legal regulations that ban usage of plastic in order to preserve our future ecosystems and oceans. We should reuse our plastic bags and not dispose them. We should gradually switch towards paper bags as well.

We should also use more public transportation and reduce electricity and water consumption. I believe that with responsible steps, we can ensure a cleaner and healthier environment for the upcoming generations.

How to protect the environment essay?

Our environment refers to our ecosystems, communities, surroundings and our living conditions. However, it is now on its way towards being endangered owing to the callous actions of Man for greed and profit. Milking natural resources to the point of exhaustion, we have already been chipping away at the natural environment bit by bit. I believe that all is not lost however and we can start taking pro-active steps towards safeguarding our environment.

We can start with more tree plantation since green cover is the only solution towards combating the impact of natural calamities, flooding and reducing the artificial  heat island effect that major global cities are suffering from. More oxygen will also ensure better quality of life in the bargain. We can also endeavor to protect natural habitats, urban forests and other natural ecosystems including water bodies. We should also conserve forests with dedicated initiatives and awareness programs. A lot has to be done at the Government level in this regard.

Other measures include waste management, zero-tolerance policies for littering, soil conservation and preventing pollution. In this way, we can all work together to protect what is left of our environment in order to combat future calamities and destructive occurrences, while ensuring the sustainability of life itself on the planet.

How to save our environment essay?

Saving the environment is imperative in the current scenario. The word  save assumes immense significance here, since we have already managed to destroy large parts of our environments and natural habitats owing to greed, conspicuous consumption and politics.

We can start by emphasizing more tree plantation and conservation of existing natural habitats and ecosystems. We should take steps towards reducing carbon emissions and footprints, while switching to electric mobility, cutting down on water waste and managing solid waste carefully. We should eliminate plastic usage in order to save our oceans.

Forest and soil conservation are also essential for saving the environment for the future. Solar and wind energy should be promoted as the new-age formula for environmental conservation. Recycling and reusing is also the way to go with regard to conserving natural resources. With these positive steps being implemented by environmental organizations and authorities worldwide, we can attempt to save our environment, leaving it intact and sustainable for future generations.

How I care for the environment everyday essay?

As human beings, we are all governed by a set of fundamental duties and responsibilities to ourselves, our families, society and the environment. We are all entrusted with responsibilities to leave behind a sustainable environment for upcoming generations instead of defiling it and leaving behind the planet in a hazardous state.

At my end, I try to take various pro-active steps towards caring for my environment. I try and plant trees as often as I can, not just in proximity to my residence, but also throughout my community, by organizing tree plantation drives. I gift saplings to my loved ones and acquaintances. I also reuse plastic bags at home while avoiding the usage of new ones. I use paper bags for my shopping as much as possible. I regularly volunteer for beach and park clean-up drives in my locality while also spreading awareness amongst children and younger generations. I try and use lesser water and encourage my family members to do the same. I also buy sustainable seafood and have cut down on my consumption of electricity.

These are some small ways through which I care for my environment. I firmly encourage others to do the same. We only have one planet and it is time that we stopped taking it for granted.

How do humans affect the environment essay?

Over centuries, human beings have adversely impacted the environment, especially with a rapid growth in population, housing and societal requirements, along with widespread urbanization and industrialization.

Human beings have contributed towards large-scale deforestation and elimination of precious forest cover throughout the world for housing, industries, profitable enterprises and other purposes. Industrialization and consumerism have become a lethal cocktail that has led to increasing usage of plastic that chokes up our oceans and causes pollution, more toxic emissions with an increase in vehicles and burning of fossil fuels and contamination of soil and water through harmful chemicals.

As human beings, we have also managed to destroy the tender ecological balance through misuse and exploitation of natural resources for profits. Littering and careless waste disposal have also hurt the environment along with wildlife extinction and biodiversity losses. Last but not the least; we have also contributed towards soil erosion, higher radiation and noise pollution. These are the catastrophic ways in which we have harmed the environment. Decades of restorative measures are required to reverse these damages to an extent.

Essay on Environmental Pollution: Causes, Effects and Solution

Profile image of Nagaraj Shervegar N

Environmental pollution refers to the introduction of harmful pollutants into the environment. The major types of environmental pollution are air pollution, water pollution, noise pollution, thermal pollution, soil pollution and light pollution. Deforestation and hazardous gaseous emissions also leads to environmental pollution. During the last 10 years, the world has witnessed severe rise in environmental pollution. We all live on planet earth, which is the only planet known to have an environment, where air and water are two basic things that sustain life. Without air and water the earth would be like the other planets – no man, no animals, no plants. The biosphere in which living beings have their sustenance has oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, argon and water vapor. All these are well balanced to ensure and help a healthy growth of life in the animal world. This balance does not only help the life-cycles of animals and plants, but it also creates the perennial sources of minerals and energies without which the human civilization of today could not be built. It is for this balance that the human life and other forms of existence have flourished on earth for so many thousands of years. But man, as the most intelligent animal, never stopped being inquisitive, nor was he content with the bounties of nature. His quest for knowledge and search for security succeeded in exploring newer and wider avenues of mysteries that remained baffling so long. Man's excursions into the darkest regions of mysteries laid foundations for the stupendous civilization, for the conquests of men had ensured their domination in their world and gave them a key to control all the forces in nature. With the dawn of the age of science and technology, there has been huge growth and development of human potentials. And, it is here that man first began losing control and became prisoner of his own creations. Sources and Causes The sources and causes of environmental pollution includes the following: • Industrial activities: The industries all over the world that brought prosperity and affluence, made inroads in the biosphere and disturbed the ecological

Pollution is the introduction of contaminants into the natural environment that cause adverse change. Pollution can take the form of any substance (solid, liquid, or gas) or energy (such as radioactivity, heat, sound, or light). Pollutants, the components of pollution, can be either foreign substances/energies or naturally occurring contaminants. Although environmental pollution can be caused by natural events, the word pollution generally implies that the contaminants have an anthropogenic source – that is, a source created by human activities. Pollution is often classed as point source or nonpoint source pollution. In 2015, pollution killed nine million people worldwide (one in six deaths). This remained unchanged in 2019, with little real progress against pollution being identifiable. Air pollution accounted for ¾ of these earlier deaths.Major forms of pollution include air pollution, light pollution, litter, noise pollution, plastic pollution, soil contamination, radioactive contamination, thermal pollution, visual pollution, and water pollution.

essay on environmental pollution and solution

Md. Hasib Uddin

Md. H A S I B Uddin

Introduction:-Now a days, environmental pollution is a major cause for concern, not only for us, but also for the whole mankind. In the last century, the rise of this menace assumed so gigantic that it has cast its melancholic shadow on nature itself. The diminishing ozone ionosphere leading to global warming and the unpredictable seasonal variations are some of the adverse effects of worldwide environmental pollution that are threatening to the existence of human beings on this planet.

International Journal of Natural Disasters & Health Security (IJNHS) SciDoc Publishers

Pollution induces harmful effects on environment and health security. Main deep causes will be analyzed including natural disasters like volcanoes eruption, climate change as well as and men-caused disasters which are nuclear explosions and dioxin sprays.

Prof.Dr.Suaad AL-Taai

The importance of the environmental pollution lies in its great impact on human life and the surrounding environment. In addition to its disastrous results that extend for many years, it contributes to crystallize the life of man, animal, and plant. The research discusses the concept of environmental pollution, and all the undesirable changes that occur in the environment. It sheds light on the causes of pollution, especially radiation and chemical types result from cars, fumes, gases, smoke and industrial wastes, which included liquid, solid wastes and others. It emphasizes air pollution, its causes, sources, and effects on humans, animals, plants, and the weather. It has a major role in making a foremost change in temperatures degree. Conceivably, the waste is extremely dangerous, and the smoke, fumes, toxins and unpleasant odors of factories and cars cause a fuel combustion with all its preventive measures and procedures. There is no doubt that the expansion of transportation means will negatively affect the percentage of environmental pollution. The research debates the most important factors and causes of water pollution due to throwing liquid and solid wastes into rivers and lakes. The causes of soil and plant pollution can be linked to the use of large quantities of pesticides and chemical fertilizers, which affect the quality of agricultural crops and reduces their fertility. They contribute to the loss of their beneficial organic materials, which harmfully disturbs the life of both humans and animals.

IJERA Journal

Environment Pollution is one of the greatest problems today which is increasing with every passing year and causing crucial and severe damage to the earth. It has become a real problem since the beginning of the industrial revolution. It is the contamination of physical and biological components of the Earth / atmosphere system to such an extent that normal environmental processes are harmed. Pollution of the environment consists of five main types of pollution, namely air, water, soil, noise and light. Development activities such as construction, transport and manufacturing not only deplete natural resources, but also produce large quantities of waste which leads to air pollution, water, soil and the oceans; global warming and acid rain. This paper provides the insight view about the affects of environment pollution in the perspective of air pollution, water and land/ soil waste pollution on human and also provide the ways to save the environment with all these pollution.

Earth is the only known planet which supports life. The environment of earth has made the existence, growth and development of all living beings possible. The word "environment" means surroundings. The environment is polluted in various ways. The dictionary explains pollutions as "The presence dictionary explains pollutions as "The presence in or introduction into the environment of substance which has harmful or poisonous effect." Pollution is the effect of undesirable changes in our surroundings that have harmful effects on plants, animals and human beings. This occurs when only short-term economic gains are made at the cost of the long-term ecological benefits for humanity. No natural phenomenon has led to greater ecological changes than have been made by mankind. During the last few decades we have contaminated our air, water and land on which life itself depends with a variety of waste products. Pollutants: include solid, liquid or gaseous substances present in greater than natural abundance produced due to human activity, which have a detrimental effect on our environment. The nature and concentration of a pollutant determines the severity of detrimental effects on human health. An average human requires about 12 kg of air each day, which is nearly 12 to15 times greater than the amount of food we eat. Thus even a small concentration of pollutants in the air becomes more significant in comparison to the similar levels present in food. Pollutants that enter water have the ability to spread to distant places especially in the marine ecosystem.

Siniša Franjić

The environment is everything that surrounds us. The environment is subject to constant changes that can be caused by natural factors such as soil erosion, earthquakes, floods, fires, and anthropogenic factors such as urbanization, industry, traffic, population growth, the accumulation of waste, and others. Due to the ubiquitous interaction of man in the environment, most often without respecting the natural rhythm in nature, man changes the environment with a harmful effect on biological and landscape diversity and often with negative consequences for human health and quality of life. By neglecting the environment in favor of economic growth and development, man has changed the environment more than any other biological species in a relatively short time with such irresponsible behavior. The consequences of such actions are unsustainable and call into question the future of that same environment. Therefore, protecting and preserving the environment in all spheres of life and work on the basis of sustainability becomes the biggest challenge for modern man and society as a whole.

QUEST JOURNALS

Developmental activities such as construction, transportation and manufacturing not only deplete the natural resources but also produce large amount of wastes that leads to pollution of air, water, soil, and oceans, global warming and acid rains. Untreated or improperly treated waste is a major cause of pollution of rivers and environmental degradation causing ill health and loss of crop productivity. In this research paper a study is undertaken about the major causes of pollution, their effects on our environment and the various measures that can be taken to control such pollutions

Environmental Pollution Essay

When it comes to protecting the environment, awareness is the key. As more and more people become aware of the causes, types, and impacts of environmental pollution, they are more likely to take steps to prevent it. Air pollution is created as a result of burning fossil fuels, such as coal, oil, and natural gas. Water pollution results from industrial activities, such as the dumping of chemicals into rivers and lakes, as well as from agricultural runoff. Land pollution is caused by the misuse of land and improper disposal of waste. The causes of environmental pollution are numerous and varied. Some of the main culprits are industrial activities, burning of fossil fuels, use of pesticides, and deforestation.

Awareness and taking necessary resolving steps is essential when it comes to protecting the environment from the impacts of environmental pollution. By teaching people the importance of taking steps to prevent environmental pollution, we can ensure a brighter future for our planet. We must understand the causes of environmental pollution, the types of pollution, the impact it has on the environment, and how we can prevent it.

Causes | Environmental pollution is the contamination of the environment through the emissions of pollutants including harmful gases, chemicals, and particulate matter. It is caused by human activities such as burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, and industrial pollution. These activities have caused global warming, acid rain, and water and air pollution, leading to global environmental degradation.

Types | There are different types of environmental pollution. The most common type is air pollution, which is caused by burning of fuels and other industrial activities. Water pollution is another common type of pollution which is caused by sewage and industrial waste. Soil pollution is caused by overuse of pesticides and other chemicals. Noise pollution is caused by traffic, construction activities, and industrial noise. Light pollution is caused by the emission of artificial light.

Impact | The impact of environmental pollution is far-reaching and devastating. Air pollution can lead to respiratory diseases, while water pollution can contaminate drinking water and cause health issues. Land pollution causes reduction in soil fertility and even destruction of natural habitats for animals. In addition, it can lead to the destruction of ecosystems, which in turn leads to a decrease in biodiversity.

Environmental pollution has serious impacts on both humans and the environment. It affects air quality, water quality, soil fertility, and public health. Poor air quality affects the respiratory system, leading to respiratory illnesses like asthma and bronchitis. Water pollution can lead to the spread of diseases like cholera, typhoid, and dysentery. Soil pollution can reduce crop yields, leading to food insecurity.

Types of Environmental Pollution

Air | Air pollution is the introduction of dangerous compounds into the atmosphere, which has a negative influence on the environment and humanity. Air pollution simply makes the air impure or contaminated. It happens when noxious gases, scents, dust, or fumes are discharged into the air in concentrations that endanger human and animal comfort or health or even kill plant life.

Water | The act of contaminating water bodies, such as rivers, oceans, lakes, streams, aquifers, and groundwater, is known as water pollution. It happens when foreign, dangerous substances—such as chemicals, garbage, or polluted materials are released into bodies of water, either directly or indirectly.

Land | When the quality of the earth's land surfaces in terms of use, landscape, and capacity to support life forms is compromised or destroyed, this is referred to as land pollution. It is frequently brought on by human activity and the misuse of land resources, both directly and indirectly.

Soil | Chemical pollutants can pollute soil or cause it to degrade through activities like mining, clearing vegetation, or topsoil erosion. Typically, it occurs when human activities bring harmful chemicals, substances, or items into the soil.

Noise | Noise pollution is an unpleasant sound or a sound that causes excruciating ear pain. Noise pollution is described as unpleasant and unwanted sound levels that cause significant distress to all living beings. It is measured in decibels (dB).

Factors Responsible For Environmental Pollution

Environmental pollution has a variety of causes. One of the most prominent is the burning of fossil fuels, such as coal, oil and gas by power plants, factories and automobiles. This produces large amounts of carbon dioxide, which is a major contributor to global climate change. Other sources of environmental pollution include agricultural practices, such as over-fertilization and the use of pesticides, and industrial processes, such as mining, manufacturing and waste disposal.

What Can We Do

To prevent environmental pollution, we must reduce the emissions of various pollutants. We can do this by switching to renewable sources of energy like solar, wind, and hydroelectric power. We should reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and use more efficient transportation methods. We should also reduce the emissions of harmful industrial chemicals and practise sustainable agriculture. Additionally, we should increase public awareness of environmental pollution and its impacts, and promote eco-friendly lifestyles.

By understanding the causes and effects of environmental pollution, we can work towards preventing it and ensuring a cleaner, healthier environment for all. Awarness and knowledge is essential in this regard, as it helps us to become more conscious and informed citizens. It helps us understand the importance of protecting and preserving the environment and make us more responsible citizens.

The world is facing an ever-growing threat from pollution, which if left unchecked will have catastrophic consequences. Education and taking conscious action plan can play a key role in helping to reduce environmental pollution.

Essay on Environmental Pollution (1000 Words)

Mixing of contaminants into the natural environment, which causes an adverse change in the environment, is known as environmental pollution.

Environmental pollution can take the shape of chemical substances or energy, like noise, heat, or light. Pollutants, the components of Pollution, are often either foreign substances/energies or present contaminants. Pollution is usually classed as the beginning or non-point source pollution.

In 2015, Pollution killed 9 million people within the world. Significant sorts of environmental Pollution include Pollution, light pollution, littering, sound Pollution, plastic Pollution, soil contamination, radioactive contamination, Pollution, visual Pollution, Pollution.

History of Pollution

Air pollution has always accompanied civilizations and has been a significant lead in environmental Pollution.

Pollution started from prehistoric times when man created the primary fires, “soot” was found on ceilings of ancient caves provides ample evidence of the high levels of air pollution was created because of inadequate ventilation of open fires.”

The creation of metal forging has played a crucial turning point in creating severe air pollution levels outside the houses. Core samples of glaciers in Greenland show increases in Pollution related to Greek, Roman, and Chinese metal production.

What Are Sources of Pollution?

The burning of coal and wood, the presence of many horses in concentrated areas, made the cities the first sources of Pollution. The economic Revolution brought an infusion of untreated chemicals and wastes into local streams that served because of the water system.

The burning of sea-coal was banned in London by King Edward I of England after its smoke became a problem; the fuel was so prevalent in England that this earliest of names for it had been gained because it might be carted far away from some shores by the wheelbarrow.

It was the economic Revolution that gave birth to environmental Pollution as we all know it today. London also recorded one among the sooner extreme cases of water quality problems with the excellent Stink on the Thames of 1858, which led to the construction of the London sewerage system soon afterward.

Pollution issues escalated as an increase far exceeded the viability of neighborhoods to handle their waste problem. The reformers claimed the demand for sewer systems and clean water.

The large quantities of coal were consumed by the emerging factories giving rise to unprecedented Pollution. This led to an enormous volume of chemical discharge, which added to the growing load of untreated wastes — the first two American cities Chicago and Cincinnati to enact laws ensuring cleaner air in 1881.

In the early twentieth century, environmental Pollution became a severe issue as progressive reformers took effect with Pollution caused by coal burning. Pollution caused by inadequate sanitation and street pollution caused by the three million horses who worked in American cities in the 1900s generated vast quantities of urine and manure.

Nuclear weapons continued to be tested within the conflict, especially within the earlier stages of their development. Though extreme care has been taken but still disastrous, incidents like those at Three Mile Island, Chernobyl, and Fukushima pose a lingering specter of public mistrust.

Worldwide publicity has been intense in those disasters. Widespread support for ban treaties has ended most nuclear testing within the atmosphere.

Pollution introduced by light in the dark is becoming a global problem, more severe in urban centers, but also contaminating vast territories, distant from towns. Increasing evidence of global and local Pollution and public information available over time has given rise to public awareness, which has to lead to the environmental movement to limit the human impact on the environment.

What Are the Major Types of Environmental Pollution?

1. air pollution.

Read more about – Air pollution

Air pollution may be a mixture of solid particles and gases within the air. Car emissions, chemicals from factories, dust, pollen, and mold spores could also be suspended as particles.

Ozone, a gas, maybe a significant part of Pollution in cities. When ozone forms Pollution, it is also called smog. Some air pollutants are poisonous.

2. Plastic Pollution

Read more about – Plastic Pollution

Plastic Pollution is the accumulation of plastic objects and particles (e.g., plastic bottles, bags, and microbeads) within the Earth’s environment that adversely affects wildlife, wildlife habitat, and humans. Plastics that act as pollutants are categorized into micro – or macro debris supported size.

3. Soil Pollution

Read more about – Soil Pollution

Soil is the thin layer of inorganic and organic materials that covers the rocky surface of the Earth, which gets polluted because of the persistent toxic compounds, salts, radioactive material, etc. which has an adverse effect on the health of the soil.

4. Water Pollution

Read more about – Water Pollution

The contamination of water bodies because of human activities is known as water pollution. Water bodies include, for instance, lakes, rivers, oceans, aquifers, and groundwater; the release of waste and contaminants into surface runoff flowing to surface waters groundwater pollution from waste disposal and leaching into the bottom, including from pit latrines and septic tanks; eutrophication and littering.

It includes urban runoff and agricultural runoff, which can contain chemical fertilizers and pesticides; also including human feces from open defecation–still a severe problem in many developing countries.

5. Radioactive Pollution

Read more about – Radioactive Pollution

The dangerous Pollution is defined as the release of poisonous substance because of the results of freedom of radioactive materials into the environment during nuclear explosions and testing of atomic weapons, the weapon of mass destruction production and decommissioning mining of radioactive ores, handling and disposal of radioactive material, and accidents at nuclear power plants.

Effects of Environmental Pollution

There are adverse effects of Pollution on all living organisms on Earth. Ozone pollution can cause respiratory illness, disorder, throat inflammation, pain, and congestion. Pollution causes approximately 14,000 deaths per day, mostly thanks to contamination of beverage by untreated sewage in developing countries.

About 500 million Indians haven’t any access to a correct toilet, over ten million people in India fell ill with waterborne illnesses in 2013, and 1,535 people died, most of them children.

Nearly 500 million Chinese lack access to a safe beverage. A 2010 analysis estimated that 1.2 million people died prematurely annually in China because of Pollution. The top smog levels China has been facing for an extended time can damage to civilians’ bodies and generate uncommon diseases.

The WHO estimated in 2007 that Pollution causes half 1,000,000 deaths per annum in India. Studies have determined uncommon diseases that the number of individuals killed annually within us might be over 50,000.

How to Control Environmental Pollution?

Environmental pollution management (Solutions) termed pollution control, to control emissions and effluents into the water, air, or soil.

The waste products generated from various types of human activities like agriculture, mining, manufacturing, transportation, overconsumption, heating, etc. with pollution control, whether they accumulate or disperse, will degrade the environment.

Within the hierarchy of controls, pollution prevention and waste minimization are more desirable than pollution control. Within the field of exploitation, low-affected development may be a similar technique to prevent urban runoff.

Environmental Pollution Essay

The essay on environmental pollution explains how the earth and its natural resources are under the ever-increasing threat of pollution. All life on earth is threatened by this vicious process initiated by human intervention. The pollutants released from all kinds of human activity, including industrial processes, have had devastating effects on the delicate balance of nature. The most common forms of environmental pollution are air pollution, water pollution, and soil pollution. Environmental pollution has to be addressed as the most pressing problem facing humanity now, and solutions have to be implemented before it is too late. Pollution has been causing damage to natural resources in every corner of the world for decades, but it seems that we have been running away from taking any positive measures to mitigate its impact on the environment. This environmental pollution essay in English will help children realise these factors and instruct them to conserve the environment and handle natural resources with the care they deserve.

Reasons for Environmental Pollution

Environmental pollution is a significant problem in the world today. Some industries release chemicals into the air, which cause harm to the ozone layer that shields us from UV radiation. Some industries release harmful chemicals into water resources. These emissions will be carried by wind and rain and deposited on land or ocean surfaces.

Overpopulation is one of the primary reasons for massive environmental pollution. Besides, it has resulted due to improper waste disposal, hazardous chemical emissions, an increase in the number of factories, and overuse of natural resources.

Measures to Avoid Environmental Pollution

With the use of renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, it is possible to limit global warming and reduce pollution at the same time. One of the leading causes of environmental pollution is the production, transportation and disposal of electronic waste. Companies should install recycling systems for computers and cell phones to reduce their need for landfills.

One of the measures to avoid pollution is to reduce the use of plastics. This includes using fewer disposable containers, choosing reusable bags, and reducing the use of plastics. Another way to avoid pollution is by recycling and disposing of waste responsibly.

Essay on environmental pollution (reason and solution).

Our environment is affected by our daily actions. the earth is plagued with land, air and water pollution. some of the problems we face on earth are: deforestation, nuclear waste, acid rain, global warming, overpopulation and some animals are endangered. air pollution has many different sources. power-generated plants, oil refineries, chemical plants, and steel mills contribute to about 140 million tons of pollutants into the air every year. automobiles account for at least 80 percent, of air pollution; the heaviest polluter. another type of air pollution is acid rain. acid rain is formed when sulfur and nitrogen are distributed from factories, automobiles and power plants. the sulfur and…show more content… solid waste such as tires, diapers and plastics are buried in landfills each year. it takes generations for them to decompose. today, there are laws that penalize manufacturing plants that dispose hazardous wastes. these plants dump these hazardous materials in nearby woods or dump them into streams (this practice was common fifty years ago). we need rain forests for survival. rain forests pump fresh oxygen into the atmosphere, protect soil from erosion and absorb carbon dioxide. rain forests cover 4.5 billion acres and accounts for 7 percent of the earth's land. the amazon in brazil is the largest rain forest (2 million acres). the fate of today's rain forest is in trouble. a process called deforestation is the leading problem. deforestation is the process of cutting down forests to use the land for farming and grazing cattle. farmers "slash and burn" forest turning them into desert lanbrazil promised to implement laws that were tougher to protect the amazon. these laws cut deforestation in half. by 1994, the burning started again and in 1996 the burning was at it's worst. the ozone layer blocks harmful ultraviolet rays, that comes from the sun. chemicals released from the earth are depleting the ozone layer. skin cancer is on the rise as a result of the depletion of the ozone layer. scientist states that every 1 percent of depletion of the ozone layer, the rate of skin cancer will rise by 5 times..

Environmental Pollution and Its Effect on Health

Environmental pollution is one of the fundamental factors directly affecting climate change. Due to the active production and human use of fossil fuel products, industrial enterprises’ activities exert intense pressure on the environment. Air pollution has a direct negative impact not only on the climatic situation but also on people’s health throughout the country. The most vulnerable category of the population to climate change is adults over 65 since external factors most strongly influence their health.

Industrial enterprises for the extraction and processing of fossil fuels are located throughout the United States of America. Moreover, agricultural activities and natural disasters, such as seasonal forest fires, substantially impact the ecological situation. Moreover, given the air masses’ movement and the cyclical nature of many biological processes, it is fair to conclude that air pollution problems are national. First of all, the increased content of heavy particles such as CO2, N2O, and NH3 has a severe impact on the human respiratory system. The lungs receive additional stress due to respiratory diseases such as asthma and chronic objective pulmonary illness.

Furthermore, the lack of pure oxygen in the body harms other human organs: the brain, heart, and digestive system. According to new data from the World Health Organization (WHO) (2018), 9 out of 10 people breathe air with an increased concentration of pollutants. The WHO estimates that 7 million people die each year from the effects of inhaling air-containing particulate matter causing diseases such as stroke, heart disease, lung cancer, and pneumonia (World Health Organization, 2018). Older people are most vulnerable to environmental pollution, as their level of immunity weakens with age.

The negative impact of human-made pollution sources is actively affecting climate change. First of all, the above factors affect the increase in temperature in the atmosphere. According to the Lancet Countdown, temperature-related deaths in people over 65 have increased by 50% in the past twenty years (Watts et al., 2020). In the southern regions, there is an increased risk associated with an increase in atmospheric temperature, which in the long term will lead to droughts, floods, and, as a result, food crises. In addition, high temperatures increase the rate at which infectious diseases such as malaria spread, which also poses additional risks in some countries (Fairweather, 2020). Thus, the problem of climate change is not only national but also goes to the global level.

To solve this problem, a systematic and comprehensive approach is required, the application of which will take a relatively long period. In climate change, due to air pollution, the main force to prevent environmental disasters need to change the approach to the production of substances from fossil fuels. First of all, increased taxation and legislative acts limiting the number of harmful products will reduce the burden on the environment. Recent technological solutions allow the use of renewable energy sources with increasing efficiency. Large companies gradually lose the need to use coal or petroleum products. Conglomerates continue to use them due to low prices. Therefore, government intervention is needed, aimed not to adjusting the market as a harmful environmental consequence.

Due to the rapid development and massive use of modern technologies by the population, people’s way of life has changed. In the twenty-first century, the world community is ready to actively assist the government by applying the principles of conscious consumption and reducing the emissions of solid and gaseous waste into nature. People are beginning to use public transport, bicycles, and other transportation, emitting several times fewer emissions than cars.

Moreover, the environmental agenda is growing: citizens choose special packaging of products, strive to sort waste into categories, and the state needs to support private initiatives at the federal and local levels (Akhtar & Palagiano, 2018). First of all, it is necessary to create all the conditions to make it easier for people to choose environmentally friendly products, create additional waste sorting centers, and raise citizens’ education in environmental matters. This can be done both by legislative acts, there and by local decisions.

The problem of climate change and air pollution is global. Accordingly, a considerable number of people are subject to changes that affect their daily life. Consequently, there is an additional burden on the health care system. If the current trend continues, the situation runs the risk of spiraling out of control due to medical institutions’ limited capacity. The pandemic of the COVID-19 virus, which has spread worldwide, has demonstrated the existence of vulnerabilities in the healthcare system (Richardson, 2020). In cases where many people need the qualified help, medical institutions may not cope with the load. In the event of critical climate changes, implying global cataclysms, the healthcare system will not be able to cope with the task.

To sum up, climate change is primarily due to the high level of harmful substances emissions into the atmosphere. According to statistics, every year, more and more people over 65 years old directly feel the consequences of the changes. First of all, to reduce environmental change, it is necessary to introduce stringent measures for large industrial enterprises and agricultural centers. Increasing ecological awareness of the population also favorably contributes to curbing global warming and, as a result, reduces people’s vulnerability to disease.

Essay on Environmental Pollution: Meaning, Causes and Solution of Environmental Pollution

Essay on Environmental Pollution : All types of pollution are growing day by day and so environmental pollution also. An essay on environmental pollution is one of the most important essays for all students. Here, we have written an essay on environmental pollution for all the students. This essay on environmental pollution is about 500 to 1000 words .

Essay on Environmental Pollution

The surroundings where all living and non-living components are residing is called environment. The growing demand for urbanization, industrialization, mining, exploration, etc. has disrupted the harmonious balance of the natural environment. Many unwanted man-made components are polluting the environment and so environmental pollution has now become a serious cause of concern.

Environmental Pollution Meaning

Naturally, for a healthy environment, everything in the environment should be in proper ratio as per the natural occurrence. When something is pairs or impairs in the environment this changes the natural ratio of components in the environment and thus environment becomes contaminated. This contamination in the natural environment is called environmental pollution.

Causes of environmental pollution

The main cause of environmental pollution is contamination in the natural environment which is mostly caused by human activities without caring for the environment. The situation has now reached at such a dangerous level that air and water without which we can't live, has been become polluted in a great extent. The most prevalent causes of environmental pollution are as under:

  • Transportation
  • Urbanization
  • Agricultural Activities
  • Growing population
  • Natural Causes

Industries and environmental pollution

Industries have been polluting our environment since the beginning of the industrial revolution. The increasing use of fossil fuels in industries is one of the major causes of environmental pollution. Industries mainly cause air pollution, however, soil and water contamination also occur which results in soil and water pollution . Smoke from industries pollutes the environment and affects air quality badly. Waste material and garbage from industries and leakage of oils during transportation are major causes of water pollution .

Transportation and environmental pollution

With the advancement of technology, human abandoned animal power to travel. Pollution of the environment is growing day by day due to the prevalent transport system which is basically based on fossil fuels. As a medium of transport, we are using, scooters, cars, buses, trains, airplanes. These all modes of transport use fossil fuels as fuel and the smoke that comes from these modes of transports pollutes the environment.

Urbanization and environmental pollution

Urbanization is a process of development of a place in such a way that converts a place into a city. In urban areas more and more people come for employment and residence. During the process of urbanization to convert a place into a city many industries are established that emits pollutants. Due to high population in the urban areas garbage has also become one of the major causes of pollution . Proper garbage and waste management system can be helpful in preventing environmental pollution in large extent.

Agricultural and environmental pollution

Agricultural activities are mainly responsible for the contamination of water and soil. This is caused by the increased use of pesticides, chemical fertilizers for intensive production of crops. Initially, the chemicals used in pesticides and fertilizers go into the soil and make it polluted. During the irrigation, these chemicals are mixed up with water and make it contaminated.

To feed the growing population agricultural activities are extending day by day. More environments and ecosystems are destroyed to make space for the production of the crops to feed the entire world. Thus, water and soil which are components of environment become polluted by agricultural activities.

Introduction to Environmental Pollution

The occurrence of all living and non-living things that are not created artificially is often termed the Environment. It is related to planet Earth or its various parts.

Similarly, when an environment is affected by pollutants and manufactured harmful materials, such an effect is called environmental pollution.

Numerous substances are constantly adding to the Environment by natural means or human activities. Such substances can be toxic or non-toxic.

The most common causes of environmental pollution are the advancement of the industry, increasing number of vehicles, rising population, and burning of fossil fuels.

Furthermore, such harmful substances pollute the Environment by seeping into the soil, going up in the air, or flowing in water. Let’s have a look below at this amazing essay on environmental pollution.

What is Environmental Pollution?

In the most straightforward words, environmental pollution contaminates soil, water, and air elements. It poses a threat to humans, plants, and animal lives.

Pollution causes substances to be called pollutants. They can be in gaseous, solid, or liquid form. Some of those pollutants are degradable and decay through natural processes in very little time.

Also, numerous substances are non-degradable and have stayed in the Environment for decades.

The most common non-degradable materials are aluminum pieces, iron scrap, plastic materials, multiple chemicals, and nuclear waste.

Furthermore, environmental pollution is divided into three types of pollution depending upon their nature.

  • Water Pollution
  • Air Pollution
  • Land (soil) Pollution

Causes of Environmental Pollution

The world is so vast, and so is humanity’s pace of progress. This progress came at a more significant cost called environmental pollution.

If we start examining all causes of environmental pollution, you will keep reading them for days.

However, to keep this essay on Environmental pollution interesting, we will focus on the major causes of environmental pollution.

1. Industries

In a superficial glimpse, you can easily assume that humanity is dependent on the industry.

Before the second industrial revolution, when the population increased rapidly, the products were scarce, and a new production method was needed.

Since necessity is the mother of all inventions, mass production was introduced. After a few decades, people started to see the dark side of progress called environmental pollution, which continues today.

Industrial wastes in the form of emissions, chemicals, and material waste pollute the environment.

It is important to note here that industries mainly cause air pollution through their water can also become a factor in soil and water pollution.

Similarly, significant power-generating industries like coal and nuclear power plants are primary benefactors towards falling air quality.

2. Transportation

The major contributor to worsening air quality is the massive size of transportation worldwide. The leakages and manufacturing processes of vehicles are also essential to note.

The Environment was in great shape when people used to travel on animals. The age of gasoline brought along numerous perks at the cost of declining environmental conditions.

This cause of environmental pollution is also due to the burning of fossil fuels which pollute the Environment and threaten life on the planet.

Similarly, the demand for transportation is constantly increasing, and meeting this massive demand, the wheel of the industry has to spin faster.

In this case, more and more vehicles are manufactured and the power sources consumed are converted into valuable energy, smoke, and liquid pollutants.

3. Agriculture

Agriculture is one of the basic needs of humans. However, science introduced pesticides and fertilizers to meet increasing demands for more food.

Yes, they got more products with less effort but at the cost of land and water pollution.

Similarly, when fertilizers and pesticides are mixed into the soil, they seep into it and cause groundwater pollution.

Furthermore, in the case of rainfall and floods, the same water travels to rivers, streams, and oceans, affecting marine life and humans alike.

Most of the trading activities in most countries involve packing materials made from plastic. Such packing material, if tread carelessly, can cause an enormous amount of land pollution.

It may seem like a minor factor, but when you calculate millions of trades per day, you can guess the number of pollutants reaching land and water.

This cause of pollution is one of the worst factors in environmental pollution.

Similarly, trading of oil internationally is done regularly. There are so many oil containers traveling the seas that the chances of an accident become higher.

Also, whenever such an incident occurs, it affects marine life, killing millions of water dwellers in a short interval of time. Such accidents are worst because the oil does not dissolve in the water and becomes a long-lasting poison.

5. Home and Residential Areas

The residential areas provide their share of contaminants to the Environment, one way or another.

Mainly, people use plastic products, chemicals, and other gaseous essentials that contain elements that are harmful to the environment.

Similarly, when there are millions of houses in a country and billions in the world, guess the total number of contaminated substances pushed out of the walls.

6. Construction

The construction field is one of the largest businesses in the world. It is because buildings are always in demand, and so is the raw material used.

Poor disposal activities of construction wastes are causing a massive surge in land pollution. It is making the beautiful landscapes look bad and contaminating fertile lands and pastures.

Effects of Environmental Pollution

There are numerous effects of environmental pollution on living and non-living things.

Among living things often discussed, humans, and most neglected are animals and plants. But as it so happens, human lives depend on plants and animals. They are their food and oxygen source.

Here we are going to shed light on some of the significant effects of environmental pollution.

1. Human Health

The primary and visible effects of environmental pollution on humans are mainly physical but, in the long run, can turn mental and emotional as well.

Asthma, allergies, respiratory diseases, eye irritations, and heart diseases are the most common effects. The most notable and heard results come forwards when air pollution rises in urban areas.

For instance, smog, a combination of harmful gases, particulates, and fog in the air, can cause people to suffocate.

Millions of lives have been lost in human history due to smog since it causes people to choke, difficulty in breathing, cancer, and other major respiratory diseases.

2. Animal Lives

Environmental pollution is known to pollute the natural habitats of animals. It makes their Environment and food toxic to live and eat.

Similar to humans, respiratory and skin diseases exist in animals due to environmental pollution .

It is important to note here that the toxic chemicals and water can cause the death of a few animals that survive on grass and water when mixed in the soil.

Also, acid rain can cause the water quality to change in rivers and streams, thus killing fishes and animals who survive on that water.

3. Effects on Plants

Millions of plants and trees are destroyed by acid rain and contaminated water. It disturbs the natural balance of animals and plants, causing disruptions in ecological cycles.

And as per the records, till now, plants are among the top resources on earth that are maintaining life cycle.

If it wouldn’t available in abundant amounts, then we will surely be going to lose the living things on earth.

4. Effects of Environmental Pollution on Ecosystem

Environmental pollution is a system of contaminants and nature-killing elements created exclusively by humans. It has the worst effects on the ecosystem while destroying its various layers.

Environmental pollution is consistently making the ecosystem worse, majorly affecting the animals and trees.

Solutions of Environmental Pollution

The solutions to environmental pollution are numerous and, if appropriately adopted, can change the lives on planet earth. Also, adopting these solutions is not enough to bring worldwide change.

You must spread the word and make your friends and family circles aware of the threats posed by pollution.

Similarly, when people start caring about the environment, these solutions will come in handy.

1. Energy Conservation

Humans depend on various energy sources. Due to the increase in the population, they have strived hard to create and explore new energy resources.

Energy sources like fossils, fuels, and electricity have become a lifeline for humans.

If you start conserving electricity and gasoline in your daily life, you can improve your Environment.

The same mentality of saving energy can reduce the world’s energy demands and slow the pace of environmental pollution.

2. Usage of Eco-friendly Transportation

The primary cause of air pollution n is transportation, vehicles, and gasoline burning. If you start using eco-friendly transport, you can change it for the better.

In the last decade, a fantastic invention called electric vehicles was introduced. Most of the largest corporations and vehicle manufacturers have already started commercializing these vehicles.

No fuel is burnt in these vehicles, and they use electric charge stored in the car batteries. This is clean energy which can lead to a clean environment.

Finally, it can stop gasoline-run engines, the leading cause of air pollution.

3. Better Power Sources

One of the best inventions of the past centuries is electricity. However, to meet the enormous demands, people started using gas, diesel, and coal-powered plants.

Such sources of electricity may keep your factories running but are causing numerous diseases and environmental issues.

The solution to such problems is to adopt solar, wind, and hydroelectricity.

All these three sources do not emit any harmful radiation or gases into the Environment, and there is no oil spillage or chemicals involved.

These clean energy sources may be the key to a green and healthy environment.

4. Say No to Plastic Products.

Plastic is a cancer of the Environment. Wherever you see a land pollution dump, you will mostly observe plastic products.

A few countries of the world have already banned such products. However, numerous other countries are neglecting this vital duty.

Pollution due to plastic waste is terrible for humans, animals, and plants. Moreover, there are islands of plastic garbage in the oceans, killing millions of fish each day.

5. Plant Trees

Planting trees means more oxygen production. Trees are nature’s oxygen generators. Not only that, but they also contribute towards air cleaning by consuming most of the harmful gases.

Planting a tree does not take much time, effort, and money. It is also a healthy activity that keeps your blood flowing. Most importantly, it will be a gift for the coming generations.

Today pollution has become one of the most talked about topics the world over, but for all the bad reasons. As we know that it refers to the contamination of environment by unwanted compounds, those are mostly produced by human activities. As the pollution is caused by the human activities so but naturally its solution also lies in the hands of humans only.

Initiatives like use of more eco friendly sources of energy – solar panels, wind mills etc; stricter vehicle emission norms; regulation of industrial pollution; efficient mechanism for the collection and disposal of waste; better and efficient sewage management system; recycling of runoff water, could be taken to reduce the environmental pollution.

Even the simple initiatives like avoiding the use of plastic and plastic materials, switching off lights and machines when not in use; and taking public transport instead of personal vehicle will considerably help reduce the environmental pollution by ensuring that lesser hazardous gases are emitted into the atmosphere.

We need to take these steps immediately in our own capacity, if we ever want our planet to stay green and healthy the way it is now.

Solution of Pollution Essay 2 (300 Words)

Introduction

Pollution is one of the main threats to the environment today. It actually compromises the quality of air, water and other constituents of the environment, necessary for life. The increasing effect of pollution has emphasized on the need to find out new solutions to contain it.

Ways to Control Pollution

There are many ways by which we can contain the environmental pollution. Some of them are as simple as using a paper bag to as complicated as revising emission norms. Below we will go through some of the simple ways that we can adopt in our ever day life to reduce the effect of pollution on the environment.

1) Say no to Plastic

Plastic is the most widely used material and is a menace. It is the most commonly found contaminants in the environment. It comes in different shapes, sizes, and is found in our offices, schools and houses. When this plastic has served its shelf life, it gets strewn into the environment and being non biodegradable it stays there for decades. If we just stop using plastic right away, we would be contributing huge to save the environment.

2) Switch off the Lights

Power generation units are one of the main contributors of air pollution. These power plants use coal and other fossil fuels, which upon burning release toxic smoke and gases. Also the more is the demand for electricity the more fuel will be burned in the power plant and hence the more hazardous gases will be emitted. What we can do is to reduce the consumption of electricity, thereby reducing the demand and ultimately doing less harm to the environment.

Some of the solutions of pollution are simple and easy to follow. All we need to have is a determination to prevent damage to the environment and a foresight to understand the devastating consequences of pollution in the next fifty to hundred years or so.

Solution of Pollution Essay 3 (400 Words)

Environmental Pollution is the most talked about topics in the world, because of the threat that it poses to the environment as well as to the life and health of the flora and fauna that exists on the planet. Solutions to the problem of pollution must be introduced in order to keep the environment safe and pure.

Methods to Reduce Pollution

Below given are some of the methods that could be employed to reduce pollution and to keep the environment clean.

1) Use of Electric and Hybrid Vehicles

Pollution caused due to vehicles is the main cause for environmental pollution. Every day vehicles release tons of hazardous gases in to the environment as exhaust emission. These gases contain mainly of Carbon Monoxide which is a poisonous gas and harmful to human health. There is an immediate need to switch to more eco friendly transport options like electric vehicles or hybrid vehicles.

2) Eco Friendly Power Production

The power production industry today is the main cause of environment pollution. This industry uses coal and other conventional fuels which emit toxic gases as byproducts, ultimately causing environmental pollution. Greener and more environments friendly options of power generation like wind mills and solar panels must be employed to reduce the environmental pollution.

3) Better Emission Monitoring System

There is a need to strictly monitor the vehicular and industrial emission. A proper emission criterion must be defined for this purpose and it must be supervised with strict rules and regulation.

4) Proper collection and Disposal of Waste

Proper collection of waste from urban areas and its proper disposal is also very much important for reducing the environment pollution. In the absence of proper collection and disposal mechanism, the waste from urban settlements reaches the environment and pollutes it. There is a need to properly collect the waste, segregate it as per its quality and then recycle it or incinerate it.

There are many solutions to the problem of environmental pollution, but all of them require tremendous will to contain the environmental pollution as the prerequisite.

Solution of Pollution Essay 4 (500 Words)

Almost all of the environmental pollution is caused by the human activities like industrialization, burning of fossil fuel, improper waste disposal etc. The solution to the problem of pollution also lies in the hands of humans. Below we have discussed some of the main solutions of pollution.

A brief description of some of the major solutions to air and water pollution is provided below.

Solutions to Air Pollution

Some of the most significant solutions to Air Pollution are described below-

1) Reduce Industrial Emission

Industries contribute to a good amount of pollution by emitting harmful and toxic gases as byproducts. The pollution caused by industrial emission can be contained by reducing it by adopting new post combustion control methods. Efforts must be made to reduce the quantities of emitted harmful gases like Sulphur Dioxide (SO 2 ) and Nitrogen Oxides etc.

2) Improve Road Vehicle Emission standard

The emission standards of road vehicles must be improved in order to ensure that they do not contribute to the pollution by emitting large quantities of Carbon Monoxide (CO) and other pollutants. The emission standard of road vehicles must be revised from time to time and their implementation also must be properly ensured.

3) Ensure Proper Maintenance of Vehicles and Machinery

Proper maintenance of vehicles and machinery is also very important to ensure that they do not contribute into the environment pollution. Vehicles those are not well maintained emit large quantity of smoke containing toxic gases, into the atmosphere. This results in air pollution, making the air harmful to breathe. On the other hand vehicles those are well maintained, emit less smoke and harmful gases, not doing much damage to the environment.

4) Controlling the Construction Dust

Dust due to ever going construction work is the main cause of environmental pollution in urban areas. Very small particles of dust float in the air, sometimes making the air so thick, so as to reduce its visibility up to only few meters. Some conventional methods water sprinkling and time management could be employed to reduce the dust due to construction.

Solutions to Water Pollution

1) Waste Water Treatment

One of the main causes of water pollution is the waste water from industries and urban areas. Urban sewage as well as waste from the industries is left into the water bodies, polluting them and making the water unusable. There is a need to employ new techniques for the treatment of this waste water so that it could be recycled and used again rather than being dumped in the water bodies.

2) Green Farming

Use of chemicals in agriculture fertilizers is also one of the main causes of soil as well as water pollution. Hazardous chemicals get mixed with the soil and get washed away into the water bodies with rain. When these chemicals enter into the water bodies they make the water toxic to use and also pose a hazard to the aquatic species.

3) Plastic Waste Reduction

Plastic bags are also one of the main causes of water pollution. They are widely in use and are easily carried away by wind and water to our water bodies. Reducing the use of plastic bags and using paper bags instead will greatly reduce the pollution of water bodies.

Pollution is widely effecting the environment, damaging it every day. Damage to the environment constitutes damage to every part of environment that is the air, water and other necessary resources. Necessary Steps as described above must be taken to reduce the air and water pollution and thereby keeping the environment safe and pollution free.

LA Skyglow -- Bryce David

How to dim the consequences of global light pollution

cities & towns, environmental justice, nature & conservation

Our ancestors could look up and see the Milky Way — our galaxy — as a large band of white light stretching across the sky. Because of light pollution, that’s no longer the case. One study estimated that 60% of Europeans and 80% of Americans have never seen it at all.

Light pollution comes from artificial lights that shine upward and create skyglow, a brightening of the night sky that obscures stars and other celestial objects. This excess light is increasing by approximately 10% per year.

The threats of artificial light — and recommendations to minimize it — are the subject of “ The World at Night ,” a 160-page report published by the Dark Sky Group of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, produced by UCLA ecologist Travis Longcore and nine other researchers.

The report is a one-stop reference for anyone concerned about light pollution, said Longcore, an adjunct professor at the  Institute of the Environment and Sustainability.  It details the harms of light pollution, highlights the importance of dark sky reserves, presents case studies and provides guidelines to minimize the use of artificial light.

Technological innovations and the rise of cities led to a rapid surge in artificial light. In the 25 years from 1992 to 2017,  satellite-based research  led by the University of Exeter found that global light pollution increased by at least 49%, but the number could be much higher — up to 270%.

Rise of the Milky Way

Artificial light is changing from dim, warm tones to full-spectrum LEDs, amplifying its negative effects, Longcore said. LEDs produce more blue and green light compared to older high-pressure sodium lights. Astronauts aboard the International Space Station can see the difference from space.

All of this artificial light has serious consequences for human health.

It disrupts internal biological clocks that evolved to a 24-hour night/day cycle, impairing sleep and the body’s ability to produce hormones that are governed by daylight. The sleep hormone melatonin, for example, is produced during daylight and released when it’s dark. This release triggers other hormones that help the body rejuvenate and cope with diseases.

Light pollution also disturbs wildlife and ecosystems. It can even be considered a form of habitat loss, as animals often avoid brightly lit areas.

“It’s an additional stressor and can be the direct cause of mortality,” Longcore said.

Animal behaviors, life stages and predator/prey interactions are adapted to the 24-hour day/night cycle and the 12-month seasonal cycle, according to the report. Too much light at the wrong time confuses them and interferes with mating, reproduction and migration, among other ecological impacts.

Sea turtles, for example, use light as their guide, laying and burying their eggs on beaches at night. When too much artificial light is present, hatchlings, who are meant to find their way to the sea, become disoriented and move in the wrong direction. Lights also confuse insects, which gather around streetlamps and become easy prey. And birds that migrate at night frequently crash into communications towers or brightly lit windows.

Light pollution affects plants, too, disrupting key life cycle stages governed by the presence of light. That can have cascading effects on animals that depend on them, Longcore said.

Dark skies are also significant for cultural reasons.

Storytelling, religious traditions and calendars have depended on the night sky throughout human history. The Maori, Indigenous people of New Zealand, rely on constellations for navigation and predict the success of the coming harvest based on Matariki, a star cluster also known as the Pleiades, that rises in mid-winter. Other cultures honor Matariki, too. In northern Java, Indonesia, it marks the start of the rice planting season. In Southern Africa, the Basotho people associate it with abundance, calling it “the female planter.”

The Declaration in Defense of the Night Sky and the Right to Starlight, adopted at the Starlight Conference held in La Palma, Spain, in 2007, considers it a human right to see an unpolluted night sky. The conference included astronomers, conservation biologists and experts in tourism and cultural preservation.

Prior to the 17th century, human civilizations burned oil or fat for light and had no streetlights, so light pollution was nonexistent. With the rise of electrification in the 1870s, outdoor light spread at an accelerating pace.

Astronomers recognized the light pollution problem in the 1970s. Skyglow was impairing research, obstructing constellations and worsening the quality of telescope observations.

A truly dark sky is still visible in remote research stations and some outdoor locations, but even those places are threatened. In the average American suburb, only a few hundred stars out of about 2,500 expected stars can be seen.

While some light is necessary to maintain the safety and productivity of modern cities, increases in efficiency and reductions in cost have led to its misuse, Longcore said.

Perhaps surprisingly, there is also no conclusive evidence that brightly lit streets increase nighttime safety for drivers and pedestrians. Excessive glare blocks hazards on the road, distracts drivers and reduces night vision, which lowers overall awareness.

Light pollution may seem like a secondary issue compared to other climate change impacts, but it’s easy to reduce. Simply dimming outdoor lighting or directing it only where necessary would make a big difference, said David Welch, lead author of the report and chair of the Dark Skies Advisory Group.

Other solutions include changing the color temperature of outdoor lightning. Light in the blue part of the spectrum — the kind often emitted by LEDs — is especially harmful. It scatters the most and causes the greatest disruptions to people and animals. Warm tones such as amber-colored light are the least harmful and would aid night vision for animals, including people. Timers and motion sensors that turn off lights when they’re not needed would also help.

Over the past few years, Longcore has sent teams of UCLA students to the Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve — the first sky dark reserve in the United States and the third largest in the world. (The nonprofit DarkSky certifies eligible dark sky areas to help safeguard them from artificial light.)

“Dark sky places are established to recognize that there is value to the natural condition that has now become rare,” Longcore said. Students were blown away by experiencing the Milky Way in a place that is truly dark, he added.

In addition to Longcore and Welch, the report’s authors include Robert Dick of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada; Karen Treviño of the National Park Service; UCLA alumna Catherine Rich, co-founder and executive officer of the Urban Wildlands Group; John Hearnshaw, professor emeritus at the University of Canterbury; Clive Ruggles, professor emeritus at the University of Leicester; Adam Dalton, formerly of the International Dark-Sky Association, or IDA; IDA Director of Public Policy John Barentine; and István Gyarmath of the Magnitúdó Astronomical Society.

  • The use of artificial intelligence (AI) can contribute to the fight against climate change.
  • Existing AI systems include tools that predict weather, track icebergs and identify pollution.
  • AI can also be used to improve agriculture and reduce its environmental impact, the World Economic Forum says.

The power of artificial intelligence (AI) to process huge amounts of data and help humans make decisions is transforming industries.

As one of the world’s toughest challenges, combating climate change is another area where AI has transformational potential.

Almost 4 billion people already live in areas highly vulnerable to climate change , according to the World Health Organization.

And this is expected to lead to around 250,000 extra deaths a year between 2030 and 2050, from undernutrition, malaria, diarrhoea and heat stress alone.

Here are nine ways AI is already helping to tackle climate change.

1. Icebergs are melting – AI knows where and how fast

AI has been trained to measure changes in icebergs 10,000 times faster than a human could do it.

This will help scientists understand how much meltwater icebergs release into the ocean – a process accelerating as climate change warms the atmosphere .

Scientists at the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom say their AI can map large Antarctic icebergs in satellite images in just one-hundredth of a second, reports the European Space Agency.

For humans, this task is lengthy and time-consuming, and it’s hard to identify icebergs amid the white of clouds and sea ice.

2. Mapping deforestation with AI

AI, satellite images and ecology expertise are also being used to map the impact of deforestation on the climate crisis.

Space Intelligence , a company based in Edinburgh, Scotland, says it is working in more than 30 countries and has mapped more than 1 million hectares of land from space using satellite data.

The company’s technology remotely measures metrics, such as deforestation rates and how much carbon is stored in a forest.

3. AI is helping communities facing climate risks in Africa

In Africa, AI is being used in a United Nations project to help communities vulnerable to climate change in Burundi, Chad and Sudan.

The IKI Project uses AI technology to help predict weather patterns, so communities and authorities can better plan how to adapt to climate change and mitigate its impact.

This includes improving access to clean energy, implementing proper waste management systems and encouraging reforestation.

4. Using AI to recycle more waste

Another AI system is helping to tackle climate change by making waste management more efficient.

Waste is a big producer of methane and is responsible for 16% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency.

Greyparrot , a software startup based in London, United Kingdom, has developed an AI system that analyzes waste processing and recycling facilities to help them recover and recycle more waste material.

The company tracked 32 billion waste items across 67 waste categories in 2022, and says it identifies 86 tonnes of material on average that could be recovered but is being sent to landfill.

AI is helping to fight climate change in systems, including those that identify plastic pollution in the ocean.

5. AI is cleaning up the ocean

In the Netherlands, an environmental organization called The Ocean Cleanup is using AI and other technologies to help clear plastic pollution from the ocean.

AI that detects objects is helping the organization create detailed maps of ocean litter in remote locations. The ocean waste can then be gathered and removed , which is more efficient than previous cleanup methods using trawlers and aeroplanes.

Plastic pollution contributes to climate change by emitting GHGs and harming nature.

6. AI helps predict climate disasters

In São Paulo, Brazil, a company called Sipremo is using AI to predict where and when climate disasters will occur, and what type of climate disasters they will be.

The aim is to help businesses and governments better prepare for climate change and the growing challenges for communities that come with it.

The company works in industries including insurance, energy, logistics and sport, where its analysis of disaster conditions and factors such as air quality can inform decisions on whether to delay or suspend events.

7. A wish list of AI climate tools

Google DeepMind, Google’s AI research laboratory, says it is applying AI to help fight climate change in a number of areas.

This includes building a complete wish list of datasets that would advance global AI solutions for climate change. Google DeepMind is working on this with Climate Change AI , a non-profit organization set up by volunteers from academia and industry who see a key role for machine learning in combating climate change.

Other Google AI tools are focused on improving weather forecasting and increasing the value of wind energy by better predicting the output from a wind farm.

8. How AI can help industry decarbonize

AI is being used to help companies in the metal and mining, oil, and gas industries to decarbonize their operations.

Eugenie.ai , based in California, United States, has developed an emissions-tracking platform that combines satellite imagery with data from machines and processes.

AI then analyzes this data to help companies track, trace and reduce their emissions by 20-30%.

Industrial sectors generate around 30% of greenhouse gas emissions globally.

In response to the uncertainties surrounding generative AI and the need for robust AI governance frameworks to ensure responsible and beneficial outcomes for all, the Forum’s Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (C4IR) has launched the AI Governance Alliance .

The Alliance will unite industry leaders, governments, academic institutions, and civil society organizations to champion responsible global design and release of transparent and inclusive AI systems.

9. Reforesting hills in Brazil using drones

AI-powered computers are pairing up with drones in Brazil to reforest the hills around the coastal city of Rio de Janeiro, Reuters reports. The computers define the targets and number of seeds to be dropped.

The initiative, which launched in January 2024, is a partnership between Rio's city hall and start-up Morfo, and aims to grow seeds in hard-to-reach areas.

A single drone can disperse 180 seed capsules per minute, which is 100 times faster than using human hands for traditional reforestation, according to the local government.

The potential of AI in the future

AI is one of the key emerging technologies explored in the World Economic Forum’s Top 10 Emerging Technologies of 2023 report.

The report specifically looks at generative AI – a type of AI that creates content including text, images and computer programming.

In the future, generative AI could be used in contexts such as drug design, architecture and engineering, the Forum says.

AI can also be used to improve agriculture and reduce its environmental impact by processing data from sensors placed on crops.

The technologies listed in the report, including sustainable aviation fuel, can be used to help tackle global challenges like the climate crisis – but more innovation is needed, the authors point out.

How ‘reactivating’ floodplains along rivers can be a water solution for California

Welcome to today’s edition of Boiling Point. I’m Ian James, a reporter covering water issues for The Times, writing the newsletter this week to fill in for my colleague Sammy Roth.

California has lost most of its natural wetlands as rivers have been cut off from their natural floodplains. And it’s pretty remarkable what can be achieved when rivers are given space to reconnect with floodplains.

I learned more about opening up spaces for rivers to roam while working on an article about floodplain restoration efforts in the Central Valley.

These types of projects have received broad-based support in recent years as an effective nature-based solution that can bring various interrelated benefits. They include: reducing the risks of flooding in vulnerable communities downstream; capturing and storing more water underground in aquifers; improving water quality; and helping to repair ecosystems.

That last point, the potential for healthier ecosystems, has many facets. And I’d like to share more of what I learned from biologists about how putting water back into floodplains can help fish and other species.

I took a trip last month to the Dos Rios Ranch Preserve , where a decade of efforts by the groups River Partners and Tuolumne River Trust have transformed farmlands into riparian forests and wetlands. By taking down berms and planting native trees and shrubs, they have restored the floodplain to a more natural state.

A woman points toward a body of water.

As a result of this work, which has been supported by federal, state and local agencies, the preserve will soon become a new state park .

Julie Rentner, the president of River Partners, led a tour of the preserve, including a grassy meadow that she called a salmon “nursery.” When the San Joaquin and Tuolumne rivers swelled with last year’s historic runoff, this area was filled with water up to 8 feet deep. And that brings the right conditions for insects and other tiny creatures that juvenile salmon feed on.

As water returns to this area in the coming years, Rentner said, the hope is that more juvenile Chinoook salmon will bulk up and help the struggling population grow.

“We’re learning more and more that the ecosystem on floodplains is critically important for salmon recovery,” Rentner said. “Those dynamics are what our wildlife and our ecology depends upon. You don’t have salmon if you don’t have meandering Central Valley rivers.”

While Dos Rios and other floodplain projects focus on restoring natural habitats, other different types of efforts involve conservationists working with rice farmers to flood agricultural land for part of the year to create habitats for fish and birds.

Biologist Jacob Katz, lead scientist for the group California Trout, explained how this is being done northeast of Davis in the Yolo Bypass, where he has been working on an effort called the Nigiri Project. He said flooding rice fields seasonally has created rich feeding areas for salmon and other fish, which he describes as “reactivation” of floodplains.

A man holds a net.

Katz, who describes himself as a “fish squeezer,” has been working on getting fish out onto flooded farmland since 2011, when he was a graduate student at UC Davis. He and other researchers quickly saw that “when you take a Sacramento River salmon and put it out into a mud puddle, a place that no one thought was salmon habitat, not only did they survive, but they thrived.”

A growing body of research shows that juvenile salmon grow rapidly when they have these kinds of opportunities to feed on flooded farmlands or other wetlands.

“We’re starting to understand what a river actually is,” Katz said.

For much of California’s history as a state, “we’ve thought that fish belong in the river and the river belongs in its banks,” Katz said. “And what the science has shown is that that’s just patently untrue, that the Central Valley was a vast mosaic of river channels and their connected floodplain wetlands, and that the fish really depend on the food that is produced in the productive, fertile wetland food webs.”

“A river is really the summation of the patterns created when the water flows through the landscape,” he said.

Now that Californians have a better understanding of how our river ecosystems work, Katz said, we have an obligation to integrate this understanding into how water is managed.

Chinook salmon populations in the Central Valley have been declining for a variety of reasons that go beyond the lack of floodplain habitats. Dams have prevented fish from reaching upstream spawning grounds , and salmon have also been affected by water diversions for farms and cities .

An aerial view of a river.

Katz said his work has shown that reginiting the “engines of natural productivity” on floodplains can go a long way, and that investments in these types of projects on a large scale hold promise for helping fish populations begin to recover. He said that means doing many more projects such as Dos Rios and the Nigiri Project.

“There really is an urgency,” he said, because without greater efforts, fish species from salmon to smelt could be lost in the coming years.

And one powerful way of helping fish, Katz said, is reestablishing the equivalent of big “puddles” on the flood plains.

“Let’s manage the water so that we keep puddles out there on the landscape long enough to approximate those engines of natural productivity, that are the means by which fish actually get the benefits,” Katz said. “What we’re giving those fish is a landscape they recognize, and when we do that, they respond so dramatically.”

On that note, here’s what else is happening around the West:

Heavy rain and flooding have hit many parts of California over the last year. And in the Owens Valley, the costs of storm damage continue to rise for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. My colleague Louis Sahagún reports that the toll has included a breach of the Los Angeles Aqueduct that occurred last year, as well as damage to systems designed to control dust on the dry bed of Owens Lake. A preliminary assessment estimated the costs at more than $100 million.

A man walks along cracked pavement.

Two consecutive winters of heavy rains have also brought an escalation of the slow-moving landslides that are leaving growing cracks in homes and roads in Rancho Palos Verdes. As Grace Toohey reports for The Times, the area with landslide movement now covers about a square mile, and the rate of movement has accelerated in recent months. City officials are now seeking an emergency declaration from the state. And L.A. County Supervisor Janice Hahn has urged Gov. Gavin Newsom to visit the area and see the damage. For more on the heavy rains affecting Southern California this week, check out the latest coverage from Times reporters Harriet Ryan and Rosanna Xia.

The downpours earlier this month flooded tiny homes in a gated village for unhoused people in Sun Valley. Times columnist Erika D. Smith spoke with resident James Valdez, who ended up knee deep in floodwater when he tried to reach his door. Most of the village’s 140 or so residents had to be evacuated to shelters. Smith wrote that “with a future certain to be filled with extreme weather, the experiences of Valdez raise questions about how climate change could put new pressures on the efforts to solve homelessness in Los Angeles.”

POLITICAL CLIMATE

In an election-year concession to carmakers and labor unions, President Biden is planning to weaken the timeline for transitioning the U.S. to electric cars, Coral Davenport reports for the New York Times . This change involves relaxing limits on tailpipe emissions that are designed to get Americans to switch from gas-powered cars to electric vehicles.

How might races in the primary election affect local responses to the climate crisis? Safi Nazzal of the Los Angeles Times dug into some of the climate questions , including housing and transportation, surrounding L.A.’s races for City Council and the county Board of Supervisors. Don’t forget to check out the accompanying video where Safi’s puppet creation, sheep reporter Judeh, explains it all in entertaining fashion.

AROUND THE WEST

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has denied permits for multiple pumped storage hydropower projects on the Navajo Nation, saying it will no longer approve energy projects on tribal land without tribal approval. The commission’s adoption of this new policy is something that tribes have been calling for, as Noel Lyn Smith and Wyatt Myskow report for Inside Climate News .

The Biden administration announced last week that it brokered an agreement between tribes and farmers in the Klamath River Basin in California and Oregon. The deal is a memorandum of understanding between three tribes, the Klamath Water Users Assn. and the Interior Department, and it includes $72 million for river restoration work and upgrades to agricultural infrastructure. Kurtis Alexander covered the announcement for the San Francisco Chronicle. Jennifer Yachnin wrote about the deal for E&E News, saying Interior Department officials described it as an armistice in the battle between farmers who rely on the river’s water and tribal nations seeking to restore its fisheries.

The work of removing dams on the Klamath River is continuing, and the draining of reservoirs is exposing lands that have been underwater for many years. Debra Utacia Krol of the Arizona Republic wrote about the latest changes as silt-filled water has flowed downriver. She wrote that tribes, environmentalists and their allies are celebrating the shrinking waters “as an essential next step in what they say will be a decades-long process” of restoring the Klamath watershed, and one of the West’s largest salmon fisheries, to health.

THE ENERGY TRANSITION

A man charges his electric vehicle.

Sales of electric vehicles dropped significantly in the second half of 2023, the first such decline in more than a decade, although sales for the full year rose from 2022. My colleague Russ Mitchell unpacked the reasons behind the slump in EV sales , and looked into the question of what this trend might mean for California’s efforts to meet its climate goals, including a pledge to ban the sale of new gasoline- and diesel-powered cars and light trucks by 2035.

Assemblymember Laura Friedman (D-Glendale) has introduced a bill that would require the California Public Utilities Commission to revisit its decision on slashing incentives for rooftop solar. Ryan Kennedy reports for pv magazine on the legislation, which would require the commission to consider the total benefits of rooftop solar, including improvements to local air quality, when determining how much solar users would be paid for electricity sold to the power grid. This comes as more than 60 organizations submitted letters to Newsom, state legislators and the commission urging them to “take immediate action to restore California’s rooftop solar growth.”

ONE MORE THING

If you’re curious to learn more about Dos Rios Ranch Preserve near Modesto, you’ll soon be able to visit. The date of the opening for the new state park hasn’t been announced yet, but the word from California State Parks is that it will be sometime this spring.

Once the park opens, I’m looking forward to going back and walking the trails along the restored floodplain.

Castaic, CA - February 22: An aerial view of equipment where contaminated or polluted water is being extracted to fill roughly 100 metal storage containers, holding up to 20,000 gallons each as the result of an underground landfill fire at Chiquita Canyon Landfill in Castaic Thursday, Feb. 22, 2024. Around 200,000 gallons of the contaminated water is coming out of the landfill each day. Environmental regulators have found elevated levels of cancer causing Benzine in the polluted water spilling onto the surface of the landfill. Landfill operators are also constructing a drainage system to capture the contaminated water that is spilling onto the surface and proactively pumping the water. Residents of Val Verde and Castaic are protesting to call for Chiquita Canyon Landfill to be closed in Hasley Canyon Park in Castaic. Garbage has been burning deep inside the landfill due to a chemical reaction for much of the past year, and recently scalding-hot contaminated water has surged to the surface. The protest follows calls from the County Supervisor Kathryn Barger's office, which said the landfill should provide funds to relocate residents who want to temporarily move until the issue is resolved. Water–rock interaction mechanism and water purification capacity of broken coal and rock masses are very important for the efficient operation of the underground reservoir. In this paper, a water purification simulation device for an underground mine reservoir was designed. The experimental study on the dynamic interaction between broken coal and rock masses and mine water was carried out. The water purification mechanism is analyzed from the changes in rock mineral composition and mine water quality before and after the test. The results show that after the broken coal and rock mass purification, the water turbidity and the concentration of chlorides and suspended solids decreased obviously. The water purification capacities of mudstone and sandstone are stronger than that of coal samples. After 60 days of reaction between the working face sewage and the broken samples (mudstone, sandstone, and coal), the turbidity, chromaticity, and residual chlorine decreased by > 90%, 90%, and 60%, respectively; and COD decreased by 35.29%, 30.59%, and 28.99%, respectively. While the TDS and the total hardness increased by about 40%, 30%, and 10% for the mudstone, sandstone, and coal, respectively. It shows that coal also has the worst degradation performance. The water purification effect of broken coal and rock masses has a significant time effect. The early stage of water–rock interaction is dominated by mineral dissolution, and the middle stage is dominated by precipitation and adsorption. The pH value of the solution has a certain influence on the ion change. In the later stage, the water–rock interaction is weak in a dynamic equilibrium state, and the change in the mine water quality index is not obvious. Considering the influence of rock lithology on water quality and the law of water–rock interaction time, the construction site selection and water storage time optimization of underground reservoirs in Jinjie Coal Mine were carried out, respectively.

Supreme Court seems skeptical of EPA's 'good neighbor' rule on power plant pollution

Matthew Daly

Associated Press

WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court's conservative majority seemed skeptical Wednesday as the Environmental Protection Agency sought to continue enforcing an anti-air-pollution rule in 11 states while separate legal challenges proceed around the country.

The EPA's “good neighbor” rule is intended to restrict smokestack emissions from power plants and other industrial sources that burden downwind areas with smog-causing pollution.

Recommended Videos

Three energy-producing states — Ohio, Indiana and West Virginia — challenged the rule, along with the steel industry and other groups, calling it costly and ineffective. The rule is on hold in a dozen states because of the court challenges.

The Supreme Court, with a 6-3 conservative majority, has increasingly reined in the powers of federal agencies, including the EPA, in recent years. The justices have restricted EPA’s authority to fight air and water pollution — including a landmark 2022 ruling that limited EPA's authority to regulate carbon dioxide emissions from power plants that contribute to global warming. The court also shot down a vaccine mandate and blocked President Joe Biden’s student loan forgiveness program.

The court is currently weighing whether to overturn its 40-year-old Chevron decision , which has been the basis for upholding a wide range of regulations on public health, workplace safety and consumer protections.

A lawyer for the EPA said the “good neighbor” rule was important to protect downwind states that receive unwanted air pollution from other states. Besides the potential health impacts, the states face their own federal deadlines to ensure clean air, said Deputy U.S. Solicitor General Malcolm Stewart, representing the EPA.

States such as Wisconsin, New York and Connecticut can struggle to meet federal standards and reduce harmful levels of ozone because of pollution from power plants, cement kilns and natural gas pipelines that drift across their borders.

Judith Vale, New York’s deputy solicitor general, said as much as 65% of some states' smog pollution comes from out of state.

The EPA plan was intended to provide a national solution to the problem of ozone pollution, but challengers said it relied on the assumption that all 23 states targeted by the rule would participate.

Justice Brett Kavanaugh seemed sympathetic to that argument, saying the EPA plan could impose unreasonable costs on states that remain under its authority, because it was initially designed for 23 states.

“EPA came back and said, 'Even if we have fewer states, we're going to plow ahead anyway,''' Kavanaugh said. "Let's just kind of pretend nothing happened and just go ahead with the 11 states.''

The EPA proceeded “without a whole lot of explanation, and nobody got a chance to comment on that” as part of the rule-making process, added Justice Neil Gorsuch.

“What (states) are asking for is simply an opportunity to make the argument before the agency,″ said Chief Justice John Roberts.

Stewart responded that requirements for states to control air pollution don't change based on the number of states subject to the rule. “The requirements are exactly the same,'' he said.

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson questioned why the Supreme Court was hearing the case before the other legal challenges were completed. A lawyer for industry groups challenging the rule said it imposes significant and immediate costs that could affect the reliability of the electric grid.

“There are hundreds of millions, if not billions of dollars, in costs over the next 12 to 18 months,'' with only a small reduction in air pollution and no guarantee the final rule will be upheld, said industry lawyer Catherine Stetson. "There are over-control issues here,'' she said.

The EPA has said power-plant emissions dropped by 18% in 2023 in the 10 states where it has been allowed to enforce its rule, which was finalized last March . Those states are Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin. In California, limits on emissions from industrial sources other than power plants are supposed to take effect in 2026.

The rule is on hold in another dozen states because of separate legal challenges. The states are Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah and West Virginia.

States that contribute to ground-level ozone, or smog, are required to submit plans ensuring that coal-fired power plants and other industrial sites don’t add significantly to air pollution in other states. In cases where a state has not submitted a “good neighbor” plan — or where EPA disapproves a state plan — the federal plan was supposed to ensure that downwind states are protected.

Ground-level ozone, which forms when industrial pollutants chemically react in the presence of sunlight, can cause respiratory problems, including asthma and chronic bronchitis. People with compromised immune systems, the elderly and children playing outdoors are particularly vulnerable.

Environmental and public health advocates have praised the EPA plan as a life-saving measure for people who live hundreds of miles away from power plants, cement factories, steel mills and other industrial polluters.

Industry groups criticize it as having an anti-coal bias that would drive up the cost of electricity.
