Pizzas taste the best when they are crispy from sides and soft in the middle. It is my comfort food and no matter how sad I am, it always brings smile on my face. Just thinking about my favorite pizza gives me an irresistible hunger that cannot be filled unless I get my favorite food.

There are my kinds of pizzas including veggie pizza, cheese pizza, meat pizza, pineapple pizza and pepperoni pizza. It is the most loved food of all time and everyone loves to eat pizza.

It is very easy to make pizza at home too. A layer of dough is covered with sauce and different kinds of ingredients. It is then placed in oven and after some time, pizza is ready. I even ask my mother to make pizza for me. She makes the best pizza in this world. Sometimes, she even bribes me with her delicious pizzas to get any work done from me.

A Feast for the Future

Close your eyes and imagine the not too distant future: The Statue of Liberty is up to her knees in water, the streets of lower Manhattan resemble the canals of Venice, and hurricanes arrive in the fall and stay until summer. Now, open your eyes and see the beautiful planet that we will destroy if we do not do something. Now is the time for change. Our future is in our control if we take actions, ranging from small steps, such as not using plastic straws, to large ones, such as reducing fossil fuel consumption and electing leaders who take the problem seriously.

 Hosting a dinner party is an extraordinary way to publicize what is at stake. At my potluck, I would serve linguini with clams. The clams would be sautéed in white wine sauce. The pasta tossed with a light coat of butter and topped with freshly shredded parmesan. I choose this meal because it cannot be made if global warming’s patterns persist. Soon enough, the ocean will be too warm to cultivate clams, vineyards will be too sweltering to grow grapes, and wheat fields will dry out, leaving us without pasta.

I think that giving my guests a delicious meal and then breaking the news to them that its ingredients would be unattainable if Earth continues to get hotter is a creative strategy to initiate action. Plus, on the off chance the conversation gets drastically tense, pasta is a relatively difficult food to throw.

In YES! Magazine’s article, “Cooking Stirs the Pot for Social Change,” Korsha Wilson says “…beyond the narrow definition of what cooking is, you can see that cooking is and has always been an act of resistance.” I hope that my dish inspires people to be aware of what’s at stake with increasing greenhouse gas emissions and work toward creating a clean energy future.

 My guest list for the potluck would include two groups of people: local farmers, who are directly and personally affected by rising temperatures, increased carbon dioxide, drought, and flooding, and people who either do not believe in human-caused climate change or don’t think it affects anyone. I would invite the farmers or farm owners because their jobs and crops are dependent on the weather. I hope that after hearing a farmer’s perspective, climate-deniers would be awakened by the truth and more receptive to the effort to reverse these catastrophic trends.

Earth is a beautiful planet that provides everything we’ll ever need, but because of our pattern of living—wasteful consumption, fossil fuel burning, and greenhouse gas emissions— our habitat is rapidly deteriorating. Whether you are a farmer, a long-shower-taking teenager, a worker in a pollution-producing factory, or a climate-denier, the future of humankind is in our hands. The choices we make and the actions we take will forever affect planet Earth.

 India Brown is an eighth grader who lives in New York City with her parents and older brother. She enjoys spending time with her friends, walking her dog, Morty, playing volleyball and lacrosse, and swimming.

Apple Pie Embrace

It’s 1:47 a.m. Thanksgiving smells fill the kitchen. The sweet aroma of sugar-covered apples and buttery dough swirls into my nostrils. Fragrant orange and rosemary permeate the room and every corner smells like a stroll past the open door of a French bakery. My eleven-year-old eyes water, red with drowsiness, and refocus on the oven timer counting down. Behind me, my mom and aunt chat to no end, fueled by the seemingly self-replenishable coffee pot stashed in the corner. Their hands work fast, mashing potatoes, crumbling cornbread, and covering finished dishes in a thin layer of plastic wrap. The most my tired body can do is sit slouched on the backless wooden footstool. I bask in the heat escaping under the oven door.

 As a child, I enjoyed Thanksgiving and the preparations that came with it, but it seemed like more of a bridge between my birthday and Christmas than an actual holiday. Now, it’s a time of year I look forward to, dedicated to family, memories, and, most importantly, food. What I realized as I grew older was that my homemade Thanksgiving apple pie was more than its flaky crust and soft-fruit center. This American food symbolized a rite of passage, my Iraqi family’s ticket to assimilation. 

 Some argue that by adopting American customs like the apple pie, we lose our culture. I would argue that while American culture influences what my family eats and celebrates, it doesn’t define our character. In my family, we eat Iraqi dishes like mesta and tahini, but we also eat Cinnamon Toast Crunch for breakfast. This doesn’t mean we favor one culture over the other; instead, we create a beautiful blend of the two, adapting traditions to make them our own.

 That said, my family has always been more than the “mashed potatoes and turkey” type.

My mom’s family immigrated to the United States in 1976. Upon their arrival, they encountered a deeply divided America. Racism thrived, even after the significant freedoms gained from the Civil Rights Movement a few years before. Here, my family was thrust into a completely unknown world: they didn’t speak the language, they didn’t dress normally, and dinners like riza maraka seemed strange in comparison to the Pop Tarts and Oreos lining grocery store shelves.

 If I were to host a dinner party, it would be like Thanksgiving with my Chaldean family. The guests, my extended family, are a diverse people, distinct ingredients in a sweet potato casserole, coming together to create a delicious dish.

In her article “Cooking Stirs the Pot for Social Change,” Korsha Wilson writes, “each ingredient that we use, every technique, every spice tells a story about our access, our privilege, our heritage, and our culture.” Voices around the room will echo off the walls into the late hours of the night while the hot apple pie steams at the table’s center.

We will play concan on the blanketed floor and I’ll try to understand my Toto, who, after forty years, still speaks broken English. I’ll listen to my elders as they tell stories about growing up in Unionville, Michigan, a predominately white town where they always felt like outsiders, stories of racism that I have the privilege not to experience. While snacking on sunflower seeds and salted pistachios, we’ll talk about the news- how thousands of people across the country are protesting for justice among immigrants. No one protested to give my family a voice.

Our Thanksgiving food is more than just sustenance, it is a physical representation of my family ’s blended and ever-changing culture, even after 40 years in the United States. No matter how the food on our plates changes, it will always symbolize our sense of family—immediate and extended—and our unbreakable bond.

Nourishing Change After Tragedy Strikes

In the Jewish community, food is paramount. We often spend our holidays gathered around a table, sharing a meal and reveling in our people’s story. On other sacred days, we fast, focusing instead on reflection, atonement, and forgiveness.

As a child, I delighted in the comfort of matzo ball soup, the sweetness of hamantaschen, and the beauty of braided challah. But as I grew older and more knowledgeable about my faith, I learned that the origins of these foods are not rooted in joy, but in sacrifice.

The matzo of matzo balls was a necessity as the Jewish people did not have time for their bread to rise as they fled slavery in Egypt. The hamantaschen was an homage to the hat of Haman, the villain of the Purim story who plotted the Jewish people’s destruction. The unbaked portion of braided challah was tithed by commandment to the kohen  or priests. Our food is an expression of our history, commemorating both our struggles and our triumphs.

As I write this, only days have passed since eleven Jews were killed at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh. These people, intending only to pray and celebrate the Sabbath with their community, were murdered simply for being Jewish. This brutal event, in a temple and city much like my own, is a reminder that anti-Semitism still exists in this country. A reminder that hatred of Jews, of me, my family, and my community, is alive and flourishing in America today. The thought that a difference in religion would make some believe that others do not have the right to exist is frightening and sickening.  

 This is why, if given the chance, I would sit down the entire Jewish American community at one giant Shabbat table. I’d serve matzo ball soup, pass around loaves of challah, and do my best to offer comfort. We would take time to remember the beautiful souls lost to anti-Semitism this October and the countless others who have been victims of such hatred in the past. I would then ask that we channel all we are feeling—all the fear, confusion, and anger —into the fight.

As suggested in Korsha Wilson’s “Cooking Stirs the Pot for Social Change,” I would urge my guests to direct our passion for justice and the comfort and care provided by the food we are eating into resisting anti-Semitism and hatred of all kinds.

We must use the courage this sustenance provides to create change and honor our people’s suffering and strength. We must remind our neighbors, both Jewish and non-Jewish, that anti-Semitism is alive and well today. We must shout and scream and vote until our elected leaders take this threat to our community seriously. And, we must stand with, support, and listen to other communities that are subjected to vengeful hate today in the same way that many of these groups have supported us in the wake of this tragedy.

This terrible shooting is not the first of its kind, and if conflict and loathing are permitted to grow, I fear it will not be the last. While political change may help, the best way to target this hate is through smaller-scale actions in our own communities.

It is critical that we as a Jewish people take time to congregate and heal together, but it is equally necessary to include those outside the Jewish community to build a powerful crusade against hatred and bigotry. While convening with these individuals, we will work to end the dangerous “otherizing” that plagues our society and seek to understand that we share far more in common than we thought. As disagreements arise during our discussions, we will learn to respect and treat each other with the fairness we each desire. Together, we shall share the comfort, strength, and courage that traditional Jewish foods provide and use them to fuel our revolution. 

We are not alone in the fight despite what extremists and anti-semites might like us to believe.  So, like any Jew would do, I invite you to join me at the Shabbat table. First, we will eat. Then, we will get to work.

As a kid, I remember asking my friends jokingly, ”If you were stuck on a deserted island, what single item of food would you bring?” Some of my friends answered practically and said they’d bring water. Others answered comically and said they’d bring snacks like Flamin’ Hot Cheetos or a banana. However, most of my friends answered sentimentally and listed the foods that made them happy. This seems like fun and games, but what happens if the hypothetical changes? Imagine being asked, on the eve of your death, to choose the final meal you will ever eat. What food would you pick? Something practical? Comical? Sentimental?  

This situation is the reality for the 2,747 American prisoners who are currently awaiting execution on death row. The grim ritual of “last meals,” when prisoners choose their final meal before execution, can reveal a lot about these individuals and what they valued throughout their lives.

It is difficult for us to imagine someone eating steak, lobster tail, apple pie, and vanilla ice cream one moment and being killed by state-approved lethal injection the next. The prisoner can only hope that the apple pie he requested tastes as good as his mom’s. Surprisingly, many people in prison decline the option to request a special last meal. We often think of food as something that keeps us alive, so is there really any point to eating if someone knows they are going to die?

“Controlling food is a means of controlling power,” said chef Sean Sherman in the YES! Magazine article “Cooking Stirs the Pot for Social Change,” by Korsha Wilson. There are deeper stories that lie behind the final meals of individuals on death row.

I want to bring awareness to the complex and often controversial conditions of this country’s criminal justice system and change the common perception of prisoners as inhuman. To accomplish this, I would host a potluck where I would recreate the last meals of prisoners sentenced to death.

In front of each plate, there would be a place card with the prisoner’s full name, the date of execution, and the method of execution. These meals could range from a plate of fried chicken, peas with butter, apple pie, and a Dr. Pepper, reminiscent of a Sunday dinner at Grandma’s, to a single olive.

Seeing these meals up close, meals that many may eat at their own table or feed to their own kids, would force attendees to face the reality of the death penalty. It will urge my guests to look at these individuals not just as prisoners, assigned a number and a death date, but as people, capable of love and rehabilitation.  

This potluck is not only about realizing a prisoner’s humanity, but it is also about recognizing a flawed criminal justice system. Over the years, I have become skeptical of the American judicial system, especially when only seven states have judges who ethnically represent the people they serve. I was shocked when I found out that the officers who killed Michael Brown and Anthony Lamar Smith were exonerated for their actions. How could that be possible when so many teens and adults of color have spent years in prison, some even executed, for crimes they never committed?  

Lawmakers, police officers, city officials, and young constituents, along with former prisoners and their families, would be invited to my potluck to start an honest conversation about the role and application of inequality, dehumanization, and racism in the death penalty. Food served at the potluck would represent the humanity of prisoners and push people to acknowledge that many inmates are victims of a racist and corrupt judicial system.

Recognizing these injustices is only the first step towards a more equitable society. The second step would be acting on these injustices to ensure that every voice is heard, even ones separated from us by prison walls. Let’s leave that for the next potluck, where I plan to serve humble pie.

The Empty Seat

“If you aren’t sober, then I don’t want to see you on Christmas.”

Harsh words for my father to hear from his daughter but words he needed to hear. Words I needed him to understand and words he seemed to consider as he fiddled with his wine glass at the head of the table. Our guests, my grandma, and her neighbors remained resolutely silent. They were not about to defend my drunken father–or Charles as I call him–from my anger or my ultimatum.

This was the first dinner we had had together in a year. The last meal we shared ended with Charles slopping his drink all over my birthday presents and my mother explaining heroin addiction to me. So, I wasn’t surprised when Charles threw down some liquid valor before dinner in anticipation of my anger. If he wanted to be welcomed on Christmas, he needed to be sober—or he needed to be gone.

Countless dinners, holidays, and birthdays taught me that my demands for sobriety would fall on deaf ears. But not this time. Charles gave me a gift—a one of a kind, limited edition, absolutely awkward treat. One that I didn’t know how to deal with at all. Charles went home that night, smacked a bright red bow on my father, and hand-delivered him to me on Christmas morning.

He arrived for breakfast freshly showered and looking flustered. He would remember this day for once only because his daughter had scolded him into sobriety. Dad teetered between happiness and shame. Grandma distracted us from Dad’s presence by bringing the piping hot bacon and biscuits from the kitchen to the table, theatrically announcing their arrival. Although these foods were the alleged focus of the meal, the real spotlight shined on the unopened liquor cabinet in my grandma’s kitchen—the cabinet I know Charles was begging Dad to open.

I’ve isolated myself from Charles. My family has too. It means we don’t see Dad, but it’s the best way to avoid confrontation and heartache. Sometimes I find myself wondering what it would be like if we talked with him more or if he still lived nearby. Would he be less inclined to use? If all families with an addict tried to hang on to a relationship with the user, would there be fewer addicts in the world? Christmas breakfast with Dad was followed by Charles whisking him away to Colorado where pot had just been legalized. I haven’t talked to Dad since that Christmas.

As Korsha Wilson stated in her YES! Magazine article, “Cooking Stirs the Pot for Social Change,” “Sometimes what we don’t cook says more than what we do cook.” When it comes to addiction, what isn’t served is more important than what is. In quiet moments, I like to imagine a meal with my family–including Dad. He’d have a spot at the table in my little fantasy. No alcohol would push him out of his chair, the cigarettes would remain seated in his back pocket, and the stench of weed wouldn’t invade the dining room. Fruit salad and gumbo would fill the table—foods that Dad likes. We’d talk about trivial matters in life, like how school is going and what we watched last night on TV.

Dad would feel loved. We would connect. He would feel less alone. At the end of the night, he’d walk me to the door and promise to see me again soon. And I would believe him.

Bittersweet Reunion

I close my eyes and envision a dinner of my wildest dreams. I would invite all of my relatives. Not just my sister who doesn’t ask how I am anymore. Not just my nephews who I’m told are too young to understand me. No, I would gather all of my aunts, uncles, and cousins to introduce them to the me they haven’t met.

For almost two years, I’ve gone by a different name that most of my family refuses to acknowledge. My aunt, a nun of 40 years, told me at a recent birthday dinner that she’d heard of my “nickname.” I didn’t want to start a fight, so I decided not to correct her. Even the ones who’ve adjusted to my name have yet to recognize the bigger issue.

Last year on Facebook, I announced to my friends and family that I am transgender. No one in my family has talked to me about it, but they have plenty to say to my parents. I feel as if this is about my parents more than me—that they’ve made some big parenting mistake. Maybe if I invited everyone to dinner and opened up a discussion, they would voice their concerns to me instead of my parents.

I would serve two different meals of comfort food to remind my family of our good times. For my dad’s family, I would cook heavily salted breakfast food, the kind my grandpa used to enjoy. He took all of his kids to IHOP every Sunday and ordered the least healthy option he could find, usually some combination of an overcooked omelet and a loaded Classic Burger. For my mom’s family, I would buy shakes and burgers from Hardee’s. In my grandma’s final weeks, she let aluminum tins of sympathy meals pile up on her dining table while she made my uncle take her to Hardee’s every day.

In her article on cooking and activism, food writer Korsha Wilson writes, “Everyone puts down their guard over a good meal, and in that space, change is possible.” Hopefully the same will apply to my guests.

When I first thought of this idea, my mind rushed to the endless negative possibilities. My nun-aunt and my two non-nun aunts who live like nuns would whip out their Bibles before I even finished my first sentence. My very liberal, state representative cousin would say how proud she is of the guy I’m becoming, but this would trigger my aunts to accuse her of corrupting my mind. My sister, who has never spoken to me about my genderidentity, would cover her children’s ears and rush them out of the house. My Great-Depression-raised grandparents would roll over in their graves, mumbling about how kids have it easy nowadays.

After mentally mapping out every imaginable terrible outcome this dinner could have, I realized a conversation is unavoidable if I want my family to accept who I am. I long to restore the deep connection I used to have with them. Though I often think these former relationships are out of reach, I won’t know until I try to repair them. For a year and a half, I’ve relied on Facebook and my parents to relay messages about my identity, but I need to tell my own story.

At first, I thought Korsha Wilson’s idea of a cooked meal leading the way to social change was too optimistic, but now I understand that I need to think more like her. Maybe, just maybe, my family could all gather around a table, enjoy some overpriced shakes, and be as close as we were when I was a little girl.

Furthermore, restaurants like Dominos and Pizza hut are available all over the country. People of every age love the taste of these Italian dishes. Also, Italian dishes are famous for their’ cheese filling. Every dish is load with cheese. Which enhances the taste of these Italian dishes.

Indian cuisine – Indian cuisine is always filled with a lot of herbs and spices. Furthermore, the specialty of Indian dishes is, it is always filled with curries. Whether veg or non-veg the dishes are in curry form. Moreover, Indian cuisine has so many varieties of food that has further branches. The Branch consists of Mughal cuisine which is mostly of non-vegetarian dishes. Also, almost every Indian love Muglia dishes.

Chinese Cuisine – Chinese cuisine in India is also very popular. There are many Chinese theme-based restaurants here. Moreover, in these restaurants Chinese are preferable chefs because they can only give the perfect Chinese blend. Chinese cuisines have a wide variety of dishes. Some of them are Chinese noodles, fried rice, Dumplings, etc. Dumplings have a different name here. They go by the name of momos in India and people love the taste of it.

These were some of the favorites of Indian people. Moreover, these are in almost every part of the city. You can find it anywhere, whether be it in 5-star restaurants or at the side of the street as street foods.

Importance of Food in Our Life

We cannot deny the importance of food in our lives. As it is the basic need to survive. Yet some people waste not thinking that there are still some people that do not get any of it. We should always be careful while taking a meal on our plates.

In other words, we should take only that much that our stomach can allow. Or else there will be wasting of food . In India there are many people living in slums, they do not have proper shelter. Moreover, they are not able to have even a one-time meal. They starve for days and are always in a state of sickness.

When I think of food, the first thing I think of is happiness: memories of my family and friends eating, chatting, and laughing together flash through my head. In particular, I am drawn back to a birthday dinner for my dad. I can almost taste all of the mouthwatering cuisine we ordered: juicy steak, creamy pasta, crispy crab bites, and refreshing raspberry lemonade. But the thing I truly remember most is how my family – my mom, dad, and sister – formed an even closer bond that evening. My sister was laughing so hard her hands were shaking, causing her to spill her lemonade. Instead of yelling, my parents just laughed. It made me realize that even though we may make mistakes, those with whom we eat will forgive us for them.

I am not a picky eater. In fact, there is little I cannot eat. I do not have allergies for any foods, and I am not on a specific diet. I try to eat balanced meals, with a variety of vegetables and meats. However, there is one type of food I cannot stand: liver. There are a few reasons why I do not enjoy eating liver: its texture, its taste, and the way it makes me feel while eating it and after eating it.

One of the worst things about eating liver, in terms of my experience, is its texture. I feel like I am eating sand or something grainy. However, I have heard that liver, if cooked in a special way, can taste like mousse (Eat Me Daily). Despite this, each time I have tried liver when it was offered to me, it has been grainy. It is difficult for me to understand people who enjoy this kind of texture in their food.

According to Eat Me Daily , “The most striking aspect of liver is its strongly musky, meaty, slightly metallic flavor, which is so unique that it’s used as a palate reference point for the taste of other foods” ( Eat Me Daily ). I agree that liver has a unique taste, but that does not mean that it is delicious, or even decent in taste. I think it is rare for people to enjoy musky and metallic tastes in food, and I am one of those people. Just the thought of eating something as detestable as liver adds to the foul taste of it. Though I concur that this has to do with psychology and/or mentality, this does not take away from the inherent taste of liver.

I judge food on one standard: if it is digestible for me. If I can stomach it, I will eat it. Liver is one of the foods that makes me feel like throwing up during and after I eat it. In fact, liver has been identified as a toxic food. According to LiveStrong , “Eating liver can also expose you to some potentially dangerous effects, such as vitamin A toxicity and contact with heavy metals. According to Professor Peter Aggett of the U.K.’s Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition, eating too much liver can interfere with your bone density and contribute to fractures because of its high vitamin A content. Other effects of vitamin A toxicity include blurred vision, trouble with muscular coordination and birth defects” (Blanc, Joel Le). I have always felt liver is toxic while I was eating it, and as you can see, there is scientific proof behind this feeling.

As I mentioned before, liver is one of the only foods I cannot force myself to eat. Its texture, taste, and feeling I get from it when I am eating it causes me to abstain from it. There is even scientific proof that consuming liver can be toxic for you. I believe I am in the majority when I say that liver is not a delectable treat.

1 Minute Speech on My Favourite Food In English

A very good morning to one and all present here. Today, I will be giving a short speech on the topic of my favourite food.

Being a foodie myself, I have tried out a variety of foods from various cuisines. Indian, Chinese, Mexican, Thai… oh yes, I have had a lot of foods alright!

Out of these, picking a favourite is difficult, of course. However, after much deliberation, I have come to the conclusion that Butter Naan and Gobi Manchurian are my favourite food!

Maybe I am biased because I am from India myself but to me, the flavour and taste of Naan and Gobi Manchurian are unrivalled by any other food. The rich flavour of Gobi Manchurian tastes nothing short of heaven! 

Again, Butter Naan is significantly better than normal Naan, or Roti, or Chappati, which in comparison are ordinary. But, a Butter Naan, especially with the added combination of the flavourful Gobi Manchurian is that much more delicious!

Today, I will talk about my favorite restaurant that I visited one day and left an impression of calm and quietness as well as the quality of the food and it’s tasty taste.

Italian cuisine is one of the most famous kitchens around the world and is one of the most luxurious and characteristic cuisines in the world. It is the origin of pasta and pizza that is unparalleled anywhere else.

The Italian restaurant is undoubtedly one of the most outstanding and magnificent food establishments in my city. Characterized by the quiet atmosphere, its light-colored interior and its elegant, glamorous decor, it was once a cafe before turning into a restaurant with many qualities of the former.

The restaurant offers delicious dining options, with Italian authentic flavor. Waiters in the restaurant are friendly and respectful.

This place is no less than a typical example of how to build a restaurant.

The restaurant serves many famous Italian meals.

The chicken soup with cream is a great start to any meal, and I have not found a restaurant serving it as here. I prefer the Chicken Caesar Salad after it.

My favorite dishes are the fettuccine Alfredo pasta with chicken, grilled chicken with cream and mushroom sauce. I love pizza of all kinds. They are all delicious and different options. Parmesan cheese is a good choice to accompany any Italian dish.

Canoloni Agnolotti with garlic and rosemary is one of the best Italian dishes. Agnolotti is a stuffed pasta and is very similar to ravioli, served with some rosemary and garlic. This dish is one of the distinctive foods in Italian cuisine.

Rap Arancini broccoli with marinara sauce is one of the best Italian dishes. It is rice balls with well fried broccoli and characterized by its golden color and served with marinara sauce.

The restaurant also offers different types of juices with meals. Such as lemon juice with mint mixed with crushed ice is an effective recipe for extinguishing the heat of the atmosphere.

The restaurant at the weekend is busy … my advice is to arrive early or book or call for booking to ensure a place.

The restaurant is rated 4 stars and its prices are high.

My favorite restaurant for sure is one that specializes in chicken meals. The name of my favorite restaurant is “…?…”. It contains in the menu many recipes of chicken. I would prefer to order the Portuguese style chicken. So it contains a lot of hot spices. I prefer to choose the shape of the chicken and how to present it, whether it is with bones or boneless. Like a chicken burger or grilled chicken. Or other delicious recipes that I find very nice. I love to serve salads and appetizers first. Then serve the main meal in addition to some of the side dishes that I can add to the meal. All this is very nice to me.

My favorite restaurant is an Italian restaurant called “…?…”. The best meal it serves is delicious and wonderful pizza. I like the way they prepare this pizza more than many other restaurants. I find it a nice way they cut the ingredients, I always find it thin and it is always fresh and of excellent quality.

The degree of cooking is great, always moderate and not too much. So I love it so much and I love eating it in this place so much. I can’t get rid of the wonderful smell that I can smell while it’s still on its way to me.

I certainly have that childish expression on my face because I long to take a piece of it and leave it a little in my mouth. I can never hide this expression no matter who I take with me to my favorite restaurant.

Of course, what makes me more determined for this restaurant is the experiences of others around me, friends and family, all of whom praise the wonderful taste of this restaurant.

I feel like I’m going there very soon, because this talk made me want to eat some pizza. I might go today, I don’t know if I could, but if I did, it would be very nice.

I also hope that everyone will be fortunate to find a favorite restaurant that he would like to return to with great anticipation.

It is great that my family took me to this place where I was able to create very wonderful memories. And build a good family bond with them. Such outings make you always want to accompany them, eat with them, and visit different places.

Of course, I now have several different experiences from visiting restaurants, but my first restaurant remains the best, and returning to it makes me feel happiness that I often need it.

The portion sizes were much bigger than I expected, but the prices of some menu items were also higher than I ever dreamed of when booking a table at a chain restaurant.

However, from Red Lobster's signature unlimited biscuits to the glitter-filled cocktails, the meal felt more special than those at other  chain restaurants  I've been to.

Here are seven things that surprised me about dining at Red Lobster.

I was most surprised by the high menu prices, especially for a chain restaurant.

While I expected the prices on Red Lobster's menu to be a little higher than other chain restaurants I've been to, given the emphasis on seafood and steak, I was surprised by just how high they were.

Most of the entrées ran for between $25 and $50, which I would expect to pay at a high-end restaurant in New York City.

The signature feasts appeared to include a lot of food, yet were still almost astronomically expensive, at least according to what I feel comfortable paying at a restaurant.

For example, the Lobster Lover's Dream, which includes two types of lobster tails, lobster-and-shrimp linguini, and a choice of two sides, cost $63.99. This was definitely out of my price range.

I opted for one of the least expensive entrées: the shrimp linguini Alfredo, which cost $21 for two portions.

Our meal came to $125, excluding the tip, for two appetizers, two large entreés with sides, and two large cocktails.

The decor and tables inside were surprisingly fancy. It looked like a classy restaurant.

The booths and tables were a rich mahogany wood, and the paneling on the walls of the Board Room, where I was sitting, made it feel like we were inside a ship.

The restaurant was clean and well-maintained, and had a more upscale vibe compared to other chain restaurants like Chili's and Applebee's , I thought.

I had no idea before visiting that the chain's signature cheddar bay biscuits are unlimited.

I've never tried the chain's signature biscuits before and thought they were pleasantly cheesy, with a slight kick. We received a basket of four biscuits for free, which I assumed was the end of the free bread.

However, when we finished them, our sever offered to get us another basket, free of charge. Perhaps naively, I had no idea the biscuits at Red Lobster are unlimited when you dine inside the restaurant.

I was surprised by the size of the Deep Sea Lobsterita. The drink, which had flecks of gold glitter in it, seemed larger than my head.

I went to Red Lobster with a friend and we both ordered the new Deep Sea Lobsterita, which comes with Cazadores tequila blanco, Malibu coconut rum, and Finest Call blue curaçao.

When we received our drinks, we were both shocked at how large they were. We also were pleasantly surprised to find flecks of edible glitter in the drinks, making them feel even more special than a classic margarita.

Red Lobster's famous lobster dip also had large pieces of lobster in it, which pleasantly surprised me.

The lobster dip at Red Lobster is made with Maine and Langostino lobster, spinach, and artichoke in a three-cheese blend sauce, and it comes served with tortilla chips and pico de gallo.

We were pleasantly surprised by the large pieces of lobster meat in the dish, which amped up its flavor and richness.

There was also a surprisingly large variety of sides to choose from when picking our entrées.

Most entrées come with the choice of two sides, and we were surprised by the number of options.

The standard side options included broccoli, orzo rice, mashed potatoes, fries, coleslaw, or baked potato.

There were also a few premium sides to choose from, such as bacon mac and cheese, lobster-topped mashed potatoes, and crispy Brussels sprouts.

We both ordered the mashed potatoes, which we thought were creamy and tasted strongly of butter and herbs.

The portion sizes were also bigger than I expected.

Since it was my first time at Red Lobster, I had no idea what to expect regarding portion size. I was pleasantly surprised — especially given the high prices — that the portion sizes of practically every menu item we ordered were bigger than we anticipated.

We left the restaurant feeling extremely stuffed — and like we got a fair amount of food for the price.

More than a billion people worldwide will celebrate the Lunar New Year on Saturday as they usher in the Year of the Dragon. It's called Tet in Vietnam , Tsagaan Sar in Mongolia and Seollal in Korea . Whether it's celebrated in Asia or abroad, the annual holiday is a time for many to honor elders, spend time with family, reflect on the past year and wish for a lucky year ahead.

Like most holidays, a bountiful spread of food is essential to Lunar New Year festivities . In my Vietnamese household, rice cakes called banh chung and candied fruits called mut are as essential to the New Year as turkey and mashed potatoes are to Thanksgiving. Traditional foods vary across Asian cultures. Some have even evolved as Asian diaspora communities invite others to share in their traditions.

I wanted to know what dishes NPR readers couldn't go without on the Lunar New Year. These were some of the dishes that stood out as favorites, plus one special recipe a reader created for her grandchildren.

Vietnam's quintessential Lunar New Year dish is a labor of love. Banana leaves are meticulously washed, then wrapped around sticky rice filled with pork belly and mung beans. The cakes are boiled for hours before they're ready to eat. It often takes a whole family to make the dish.

For Yolanda Vo, the dish reminds her of her refugee parents, who brought their tradition to the U.S. nearly 50 years ago. Sahra Nguyen watches her mom make the "shockingly laborious" cakes every year. She wrote that she sees her mom's love for her family in her dedication to making the dish. "I feel deeply grateful for the opportunity to enjoy each bite because I know it's one of her biggest displays of love," wrote Nguyen.

There are endless varieties of Hot pot across Asia. It's also known as Chinese fondue or huoguo in China. In Vietnam, it's called lau. In Japan: shabu-shabu . All the dishes involve cooking meats, noodles and vegetables communally in a pot of broth.

"It gathers the family around a single pot to linger and commune with each other," Alvina Chu wrote. "Everyone gets to pick what they like — and the prep is no-stress for mom!"

Amy Fedun wrote that she loves a steamy pot on cold days. She tops her special hotpot with a whole grilled or baked fish, then stacks grilled lamb chops cut to look like bear paws on top of the fish. "There's a [Mandarin] saying that literally goes, 'you can't have both fish and bear paw,' meaning you have to make a choice between two desirable things," wrote Fedun "Well, here at my new year's table, you get to enjoy both."

The highlight of Anh Therese McCauley's Lunar New Year meals is when her mother brings out the durian fruit. It's an acquired taste. Its smell has been described as similar to a gas leak . But many covet its custardy taste and texture, calling it " crème brûlée on a tree ." "It's such a weird fruit, but we can claim it as ours in the Asian diaspora, and I can't help but love that," McCauley wrote.

Jessica Hoang's Vietnamese fruit of choice is the mang cau, or custard apple. Her grandma always had it in her home during the new year. Her mother would tell her stories of growing up eating the fruit in Vietnam and using the seeds to play a marbles game. "My grandma was an intimidating woman — tough, cold and not afraid to be direct," Hoang wrote. "But her way of showing she cared was giving us food and telling us to eat. In those moments, for a few minutes, a young me was able to be close to my grandma."

Elsy MektrakarnNguyen's family has its roots in Hainan, China, just as this chicken and rice dish does. Hainanese migrants took the recipe with them when they migrated across Southeast Asia. The meal of poached chicken and garlic rice cooked in the chicken's broth is now an iconic fixture in Singaporean street food.

MektrakarnNguyen's family moved to Thailand before her mother was born. Though the new year, or Songkran, is celebrated there in April, her family continued to celebrate the Lunar New Year. Hainanese chicken, or khao man gai in Thai, was often part of the table of offerings to their ancestors.

"The garlic rice was precooked with LOTS of garlic and chicken fat," she wrote. "My house would smell of garlic for days after cooking it. The smells of my childhood."

Like many of the dishes mentioned above, a version of braised pork belly appears on many Lunar New Year tables across Asia. In Vietnam, hard-boiled eggs are added to the dish called thịt kho trứng. " Thịt kho paired with white rice is so comforting," Kimberly Huynh wrote. "It braises for hours and it just falls apart when it's ready to be eaten."

Carrie Huang, from Taipei, Taiwan, enjoys a similar dish from Hangzhou, China called Dongpo pork . She wrote that the layers in the pork belly "represent seasons of the year and the good times and challenging times, similar to the rings inside the trunk of a tree showing the tough years and the good years."

Sarah Low wrote that she used to hate jai, also known as Buddha's delight or lo han jai. Still, she makes this vegetarian dish every year to remember her late grandparents and the culture she grew up in. "It's a dish that is so different than what I cook all year long," she wrote. "It's a great way to remember the past and be mindful of the present."

As for whether she still hates it? "I find I appreciate the flavors, but it's never going to be my favorite," Low wrote.

Mikayla Sanford's dumpling of choice are momos. They hail from Tibet, where the Lunar New Year is known as Losar. "Tibetan's never had much flour or meat, so momos were always prepared for special occasions," she wrote. "My family has been making them since I was a child. We even get together with huge steaming vats to make hundreds of momos during the new year."

Alice Young came up with her dumpling recipe using ingredients that are easy to find in North Carolina and steps that her grandchildren can follow along with.

Ingredients:

  • rotisserie or any cooked chicken or meat or sausage, or firm tofu, diced
  • chopped green onions or chives or cabbage, or a mix
  • mayonnaise or vegenaise
  • hoisin sauce
  • oyster sauce
  • sesame seed oil
  • wonton wrappers

Directions:

  • In a medium-size bowl mix equal portions of chicken/meat/tofu and chopped greens. 
  • Add mayonnaise, hoisin sauce, and a splash of oyster sauce and sesame oil until the mixture has the consistency of a sticky filling and tastes good to the sampling grandchild.
  • Put a teaspoon of filling in a wonton wrap, lightly wet the edges of the wrap with water on your fingertips, and seal each dumpling in either a triangle or with a crimped edge, depending on the skill and interest of the grandchild.
  • Optional- if the grandchild is forewarned and is not likely to swallow a small toy gold coin, sneak one into one of the dumplings as a lucky dumpling.
  • Boil a pot of water and drop the finished dumplings in and cook for 6 minutes, until the dumpling wraps are cooked
  • For fried dumplings. heat a pan with peanut or almond oil on medium heat, and fry the dumplings for 5 minutes until crispy on the bottom, add a splash of water and cover for 1-2 minutes until the water has evaporated and the dumpling wraps are cooked.
  • Serve with soy sauce mixed with rice vinegar and sugar.

  • Over recent years food prices have been inflated by the pandemic and war in Ukraine, while extreme summer temperatures have exacerbated the problem.
  • Soybeans, olive oil, rice, potatoes and cocoa are just some of the crops that have been affected.
  • A World Economic Forum report, Green Returns: Unleashing the Power of Finance for Sustainable Food Systems , calls on the financial sector to direct more resources into helping the food and agriculture sector to become more sustainable.

Shortages and supply issues caused by events including the pandemic and war in Ukraine have been felt through food price inflation for some while now.

But for some foods, the impact of climate change is also making itself felt, through record high temperatures and extreme weather.

It’s entirely usual for food prices to fluctuate alongside the seasons, but the exceptionally hot and dry summer 2023 in Europe, the US, Asia and beyond caused poor harvests and many crops to fail.

The climate crisis is making extreme weather – from heatwaves and droughts to storms and floods – more common, and some crops are more susceptible to these changes than others.

Here are five examples of foods where we are already seeing an impact.

In February 2024, cocoa prices globally hit a record high , as crops in West Africa were impacted by dry weather, according to the BBC.

It meant the cost of the chocolate ingredient had doubled since the beginning of 2023.

The two biggest cocoa bean-growing countries - Ghana and Ivory Coast - have been affected by the El Niño weather phenomenon , which causes drier weather.

"Traders are worried about another short production year and these feelings have been enhanced by El Niño that is threatening West Africa crops with hot and dry weather," Jack Scoville, an analyst at Price Futures Group, told the BBC.

2. Olive oil

A long, hot, dry summer in much of the Mediterranean damaged olive trees and caused a poor crop because reduced soil moisture has stunted plants and crops during their crucial growing season.

As a result, prices of olive oil soared to an all-time high. Stock piles are already significantly down on previous years and are likely to run very low before we reach the next harvest.

Between April 2022 and May 2023 average temperatures were up to 2.5°C – and sometimes 4°C – higher than average in countries including Spain, which is one of the world’s most significant producers of olive oil.

This has combined with persistently low rainfall for more than a year to create severe drought. In Andalusia in southern Spain, water reservoirs are down to about 25% of their capacity.

From Italy to India, rice farmers have been feeling the effects of climate change on their crops for some years. And the problem is multi-faceted – sometimes it’s drought, sometimes it’s flooding. And rising salinity from water intrusion is also affecting crops.

Italy grows about 50% of the EU’s rice , and is the world’s only grower of many varieties suitable for risotto. But in March 2023, the country warned rice output would fall as it faced a second year of drought.

In July 2023, rice prices in Asia soared to their highest levels in more than two years on concerns the dry weather would damage crops . In India, late and particularly heavy monsoon rains damaged the country’s rice crop causing it to halt exports of some categories of rice .

Export bans were expected to continue into 2024, according to Bloomberg.

The Californian rice belt in the US was severely hit by drought in 2022, with rice growers only planting half as much rice as usual . The long-running drought was estimated to have cost the region $703 million in lost economic activity in 2022, as well as 5,300 lost rice-related jobs.

The start to the 2023 season was more typical , which brought growers some respite, although the effects of the drought continued to be felt further down the supply chain including by millers, dryers, storage facilities and trucking operations.

4. Soybeans

It’s not just America’s west coast that has seen a shortage of rain. In 2023, the Midwest experienced its worst drought since 2012, which affected soybean production.

An estimated 4.16 billion bushels of soybeans were produced in the US last year, a drop of almost 106 million bushels compared to the previous year.

Soybean production is also significantly down in other places. In Argentina, for example, the drought saw the volume of crushed soybeans fall 27% year-on-year in the period between January and August 2023 - to its lowest level since 2015.

It had to import a record amount of the crop from neighbouring countries Paraguay, Bolivia and Brazil, in order to keep its crushing factories open.

As of January 2023, damage to various crops, including wheat, soybean and corn in Argentina, have led to estimated losses of $10.4 billion .

Although soy oil is used as an ingredient in a variety of products, the vast majority of the world’s soybean crop is used for livestock feed.

A shortage or poorer quality livestock feed can cause prices to spike, leading farmers to difficult decisions about reducing herd sizes or finding alternative food sources, for example. This in turn feeds into the price, availability and quality of meats or dairy products down the line.

5. Potatoes

Europe, however, has experienced the opposite problem. Heavy rains in Belgium, France, and the UK in autumn 2023 drenched potato fields , hindering collection and increasing the risk of crop spoilage, Bloomberg reports.

The Netherlands – Europe's fourth-largest grower in 2022 – and Belgium have been the worst affected. Harvesting on the continent is normally over by late autumn, but on 24 November, around 15% and 11% of potato crops in these countries, respectively, remained uncollected in waterlogged fields , exacerbating supply constraints.

Not surprisingly, European potato prices soared as a result, hitting a 14-year high ahead of the holiday season. December Mintec data showed Maris Piper potatoes – a Christmas dinner staple – were up 158% on last year, at £465 per tonne.

The wet weather also threatened Europe's sugar beet crop and slowed winter grain sowing in France, which accounts for 17% of all agricultural production in the European Union .

A sign of things to come?

As the impacts of the climate crisis intensify, bringing with them more extreme weather, the concern is that the devastating impacts seen on crops this summer are only the start. A study by NASA suggests maize crop yields could be down 24% by 2030 as a result of climate change.

Much research time and money is being devoted to mitigating the effects of a changing climate on crops. This includes more resilient and better adapted crops, better and more efficient water use, and more effective and targeted fertilizers, for example.

It also is important to note that the agricultural sector itself is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions – food systems account for around a third of global emissions. However, comparatively little finance is being directed towards solving this. Just under 4% of climate finance is allocated to agriculture and food , according to The World Economic Forum’s paper Green Returns: Unleashing the Power of Finance for Sustainable Food Systems.

The paper calls on the finance community to reshape its strategies and highlights five pivotal financial vehicles that could be used to bring about equitable and sustainable change.

In April, a New York start-up called Runway AI unveiled technology that let people generate videos, like a cow at a birthday party or a dog chatting on a smartphone, simply by typing a sentence into a box on a computer screen.

The four-second videos were blurry, choppy, distorted and disturbing. But they were a clear sign that artificial intelligence technologies would generate increasingly convincing videos in the months and years to come.

Just 10 months later, the San Francisco start-up OpenAI has unveiled a similar system that creates videos that look as if they were lifted from a Hollywood movie. A demonstration included short videos — created in minutes — of woolly mammoths trotting through a snowy meadow, a monster gazing at a melting candle and a Tokyo street scene seemingly shot by a camera swooping across the city.

OpenAI, the company behind the ChatGPT chatbot and the still-image generator DALL-E , is among the many companies racing to improve this kind of instant video generator, including start-ups like Runway and tech giants like Google and Meta, the owner of Facebook and Instagram. The technology could speed the work of seasoned moviemakers, while replacing less experienced digital artists entirely.

It could also become a quick and inexpensive way of creating online disinformation, making it even harder to tell what’s real on the internet.

“I am absolutely terrified that this kind of thing will sway a narrowly contested election,” said Oren Etzioni, a professor at the University of Washington who specializes in artificial intelligence. He is also the founder of True Media, a nonprofit working to identify disinformation online in political campaigns.

OpenAI calls its new system Sora, after the Japanese word for sky. The team behind the technology, including the researchers Tim Brooks and Bill Peebles, chose the name because it “evokes the idea of limitless creative potential.”

In an interview, they also said the company was not yet releasing Sora to the public because it was still working to understand the system’s dangers. Instead, OpenAI is sharing the technology with a small group of academics and other outside researchers who will “red team” it, a term for looking for ways it can be misused.

“The intention here is to give a preview of what is on the horizon, so that people can see the capabilities of this technology — and we can get feedback,” Dr. Brooks said.

OpenAI is already tagging videos produced by the system with watermarks that identify them as being generated by A.I . But the company acknowledges that these can be removed. They can also be difficult to spot. (The New York Times added “Generated by A.I.” watermarks to the videos with this story.)

The system is an example of generative A.I., which can instantly create text, images and sounds. Like other generative A.I. technologies, OpenAI’s system learns by analyzing digital data — in this case, videos and captions describing what those videos contain.

OpenAI declined to say how many videos the system learned from or where they came from, except to say the training included both publicly available videos and videos that were licensed from copyright holders. The company says little about the data used to train its technologies, most likely because it wants to maintain an advantage over competitors — and has been sued multiple times for using copyrighted material.

(The New York Times sued OpenAI and its partner, Microsoft, in December, claiming copyright infringement of news content related to A.I. systems.)

Sora generates videos in response to short descriptions, like “a gorgeously rendered papercraft world of a coral reef, rife with colorful fish and sea creatures.” Though the videos can be impressive, they are not always perfect and may include strange and illogical images. The system, for example, recently generated a video of someone eating a cookie — but the cookie never got any smaller.

DALL-E, Midjourney and other still-image generators have improved so quickly over the past few years that they are now producing images nearly indistinguishable from photographs. This has made it harder to identify disinformation online, and many digital artists are complaining that it has made it harder for them to find work.

“We all laughed in 2022 when Midjourney first came out and said, ‘Oh, that’s cute,’” said Reid Southen, a movie concept artist in Michigan. “Now people are losing their jobs to Midjourney.”

Blueberries are one of the foods I eat everyday to promote longevity. They are tasty, low in calories, and filled with vitamins and antioxidants that protect your body from infection like a suit of armor.

Here's why I consider it the holy grail of longevity-boosting foods:

1. They strengthen your cells 

Antioxidants help defend healthy cells , prevent further damage, and are involved in processes that repair DNA — and blueberries have a lot of them . They are very high in antioxidants called anthocyanins , which is what makes them blue.

In addition to creating that vivid color, anthocyanins are thought to improve cognitive performance and vascular function . 

2. They are great for your eyesight

One cup of blueberries contains 16% of the daily value of vitamin C, which is known to boost eye health.

Vitamin C can help prevent age-related macular degeneration and reduce cellular oxidative stress in the retina, essentially making your eyes less susceptible to decline. 

3. They help with muscle recovery

Research is ongoing, but blueberries have been found to reduce muscle damage and soreness.

The vitamin C in the berries also promotes iron absorption and increases the production of collagen, the tissue that connects your bones and muscles.

One cup of blueberries contains 24% of the daily value of vitamin K , which helps with building bones and blood clotting. 

4. They boost your brain health 

Along with physical benefits, studies have found that the antioxidants in blueberries could affect areas of your brain that are crucial for intelligence.

One study of over 16,000 people found that blueberries and strawberries were linked to delaying mental aging by up to two and a half years.

5. They reduce inflammation

Research has shown that the fiber, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants in blueberries can help reduce inflammation and additional risk factors for Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Blueberries also have a prebiotic effect that regulates bacteria, relieves gut inflammation , and can help to prevent colon cancer.

6. They lower cholesterol 

Since blueberries are high in soluble fiber, they help to remove the bile in our gut, as well as things like fatty acids, salts, metals and bilrubin — a substance created from the breaking down of red blood cells.

This process can reduce bad cholesterol and also lower your risk of heart disease .

My favorite ways to eat blueberries 

There are a number of ways to incorporate blueberries into your diet. I like adding them to salads and smoothies, snacking on them between meals, or mixing them into oatmeal. 

While you'll likely get the most from blueberries by eating them raw, and some studies so show that baking and heat will lower the number of anthocyanins , consuming them in any form (like dried or frozen) will still provide benefits. 

Ultimately, blueberries are one small piece of the longevity puzzle. Including them in a rich and varied diet, getting enough sleep, exercising regularly, and managing stress can all help you lead a happier, healthier and longer life .

Presidents Day occurs at a crucial moment this year, with the presidency on the cusp of crisis as we inexorably shuffle toward a rematch between the incumbent and his predecessor. It’s the sort of contest we haven’t seen since the 19th century, and judging by public opinion of President Biden and former President Trump, most Americans would have preferred to keep it that way.

But the third installment of our Presidential Greatness Project , a poll of presidential experts released this weekend, shows that scholars don’t share American voters’ roughly equal distaste for both candidates.

Biden, in fact, makes his debut in our rankings at No. 14, putting him in the top third of American presidents. Trump, meanwhile, maintains the position he held six years ago: dead last, trailing such historically calamitous chief executives as James Buchanan and Andrew Johnson. In that and other respects, Trump’s radical departure from political, institutional and legal norms has affected knowledgeable assessments not just of him but also of Biden and several other presidents.

The overall survey results reveal stability as well as change in the way scholars assess our nation’s most important and controversial political office. Great presidents have traditionally been viewed as those who presided over moments of national transformation, led the country through major crises and expanded the institution of the presidency. Military victories, economic growth, assassinations and scandals also affect expert assessments of presidential performance.

The presidents at the top of our rankings, and others like ours, reflect this. Hallowed leaders such as Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and George Washington consistently lead the list.

Our latest rankings also show that the experts’ assessments are driven not only by traditional notions of greatness but also by the evolving values of our time.

One example is the continuing decline in esteem for two important presidents, Andrew Jackson and Woodrow Wilson. Their reputations have consistently suffered in recent years as modern politics lead scholars to assess their early 19th and 20th century presidencies ever more harshly, especially their unacceptable treatment of marginalized people.

More acutely, this survey has seen a pronounced partisan dynamic emerge, arguably in response to the Trump presidency and the Trumpification of presidential politics.

Proponents of the Biden presidency have strong arguments in their arsenal, but his high placement within the top 15 suggests a powerful anti-Trump factor at work. So far, Biden’s record does not include the military victories or institutional expansion that have typically driven higher rankings, and a family scandal such as the one involving his son Hunter normally diminishes a president’s ranking.

Biden’s most important achievements may be that he rescued the presidency from Trump, resumed a more traditional style of presidential leadership and is gearing up to keep the office out of his predecessor’s hands this fall.

Trump’s position at the bottom of our rankings, meanwhile, puts him behind not only Buchanan and Johnson but also such lowlights as Franklin Pierce, Warren Harding and William Henry Harrison, who died a mere 31 days after taking office.

Trump’s impact goes well beyond his own ranking and Biden’s. Every contemporary Democratic president has moved up in the ranks — Barack Obama (No. 7), Bill Clinton (No. 12) and even Jimmy Carter (No. 22).

Yes, these presidents had great accomplishments such as expanding healthcare access and working to end conflict in the Middle East, and they have two Nobel Prizes among them. But given their shortcomings and failures, their rise seems to be less about reassessments of their administrations than it is a bonus for being neither Trump nor a member of his party.

Indeed, every modern Republican president has dropped in the survey, including the transformational Ronald Reagan (No. 16) and George H.W. Bush (No. 19), who led the nation’s last decisive military victory.

Academics do lean left, but that hasn’t changed since our previous surveys. What these results suggest is not just an added emphasis on a president’s political affiliation, but also the emergence of a president’s fealty to political and institutional norms as a criterion for what makes a president “great” to the scholars who study them.

As for the Americans casting a ballot for the next president, they are in the historically rare position of knowing how both candidates have performed in the job. Whether they will consider each president’s commitment to the norms of presidential leadership, and come to rate them as differently as our experts, remains to be seen.
